It has been six years since the country stopped admitting college students, and no one knows when the college entrance examination will resume. Su Xiaoxiao, who was an outstanding student, was now humiliated after not being able to attend university.

She was too high for the people in the village and too poor for the people in the city. Due to this, she became a “leftover girl.”

An educated youth said he was willing to try. When Father Su then asked the educated youth when he planned to marry his daughter, the educated youth said it was Su Xiaoxiao who took the initiative to pester him before agreeing to give it a try, and he wanted to go back to the city in the future and did not plan to marry a country girl.

Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t take this humiliation anymore and decided to jump into the river to commit su*cide. This made her reputation become even worse. The matchmakers had to go around when they passed by the Su family’s house. Mother Su and Father Su were so angry that they almost rode a crane to death. They decided to marry their daughter in the city regardless of the dowry.

Han Cheng, who had lost his wife for a year, went back to the city to visit his sons on his vacation. His two sons, who were once white and chubby cubs, became skinny and gloomy after living with his teacher’s wife. He was so angry and immediately asked the matchmaker to go to the countryside and find him a match. The only requirement he asked for was, that she must be literate.

The matchmaker went to the Su family’s house, and there, Su Xiaoxiao, who came from the 21st century, didn’t raise any objections and accepted it.

However, the unreliable matchmaker actually invited another girl besides Su Xiaoxiao and arranged their dates at the same time.

Han Cheng asked Su Xiaoxiao, who looked like a good match for him: “Are you literate? Do you mind taking care of my two sons?”

I agree with shine bright and Erumwhat reviews. It lacks of plot and at some point I just skipped more than I read.. Repetitive story. I stopped at 180 because I can't go on anymore. I love slices of life genre but this is just slow mo life. And more of plot are missing. Like who's the one that complaint about Su weimen and su xiaoxiao during the typhoon arc. They are geniuses I get it but, too op for slice of life genre.

The cubs are cute I admit it.... more>> But its a headache to read the translation. I thank the effort but its so full of error. Like just some edited MTL.

I gave 3 stars because I did skipped till the extras. But I ignore the couples arcs. Anyway so many characters was forgotten. Like liu the divorcee, the one in old military places. Some unimportant friends. Maybe can't be covered in main story but a sentences or two may be nice in the extra.

I think the main story should stopped at 100+ chapters if they cut the unnecessary or not exciting plot. Anyway thank you translator for you effort <<less

I enjoyed it a lot. If you enjoy the slice of life, slow paced, heart-warming, caring for cute cubs, lovey-dovey main couple, with no special drama with very insignificant antagonists type of stories, then I'll wholeheartedly recommend this for you.

All the characters were sweet, cute, endearing and heart-warming. There is no main conflict, not even a climax to the story, is all about their slice of life through the years. I liked that the FL had this kind of halo for motherhood, but otherwise, she was wise enough to not meddle in things she wasn't certain about. I loved the children, all of them were so funny, adorable and healing to the soul.
Spoiler

I specially loved Zhuzi, his background story was kind of all over the place for the sake of making him kind of pitiful. But the scene when he finally calls Su Xiaoxiao "Mom" had me in tears ngl

[collapse]

A good thing that stuck with me from the ML was; he truly is a good father. He is not a perfect father, but he is grows in his role and learns from the FL, eventually he becomes a great role model and paternal figure to not only his biological children but also to all the kids him and the FL had the opportunity to care for. I loved it. 10/10

First of all, I love Shanghai Fantasy. I love how their website is built. I feel very satisfied reading their stories with a black theme. But they translate very few straight stories, which I'm unhappy about. Most of their stories are bl. So, when I saw it was translated by them, I immediately read it. And I adored it.
Spoiler

It's a very nice enjoying story. The translations are very good and interesting to read. The story is about a modern girl transmigrating in the seventies. I love MC's view of the world. She takes everything positively. Our MC is someone who works smartly not hardly. It's interesting to read how the MC teaches the cubs with modern parental education. She's a liberal person. She broke the stereotype that one has to give his family all the best things while treating himself poorly.

Like always gives the children chicken leg piece, and the best clothes when he eats leftover meals and wears poor clothes. Our MC made a system where all family member's wishes will be listened to. For today if one member eats chicken leg or his meal of choice, then tomorrow everyone has to eat another's member's choice of meal. Her modern beliefs and views are amazing.

Another thing that is notable about her, is that she didn't let go of the Og owner's dream. In most of the novels, MC who transmigrates never cares about Og's body's dream. {I remember in one novel (Bringing Good Luck to Your Husband in the '70s) MC drops out of university (Studying was that novel's og owner's dream) and even criticizes other married women who study, only cause she wants to cook for ML and children.} But our MC isn't like that. She believes as she's living in Og's owner's body, she should at least repay her by fulfilling her dream. Though she's lazy, she still studied hard to get into the university with ML only to achieve Og body's dream to complete study.

I also liked how she helped helpless people by making them self-reliant with small jobs. She made all realize that giving them some money is not helping, only making self-independent can help them. She also made studies fun by teaching the cubs game tasks, stories, and small plays. If the cubs have to buy study materials or anything that would be of their choice. MC or ML can't choose it. She treated the babies like friends. I wish my parents were also like that. But sadly, they aren't. Also, this is the first time I read a story, where MC used our real life's knowledge to teach and solve all problems.

My Thoughts:

My only dissatisfaction with this is that this book is paid for. After 40 chapters you've to pay if you wanna read more. Why can't it be like sleeping translations, where after a certain period the paid chapter will become free? I felt so sad that I couldn't read more. I tried Mtl and it was so painful to read, so I had to drop it. Sobbing cause I can't read such an affable story.

[Also. What's @7starkiller99's problem, huh? I found him in most NU novels where he gives 1 rating with a bad review. Like is he full of negative blood? Stop misleading people and get a life, man! ]

Correcting @AmuSusher's wrong information:

The above commenter gave you all wrong information. ML compared his ex-wife and MC with who treated him best not who was more docile to him.
    1. Firstly, Ml's ex-wife is not strong and independent.
    1. She gets away in her family's words. And even hit her children.
    1. His ex-wife didn't care for the family, gave his hard-earned money to outsiders, even let her cousin harass ML and children.
    1. Because of that cousin, ML even refused to go home. He talked to her about this, but she ignored him. Who'll like such a person who bring such mol*sters at home?
And in comparison, MC made sure he and children are fed well, treated them with care, made them study to improve their career. For MC, whoever tried to treat her family wrong, she would make sure to stop them with her polite way of argument. Who wouldn't love her? Not even Ml, even I would also fall in love with her. Why will you like someone who neglect and mistreat you and your children? The above commenter's logic is total hyp*crisy.

Well, she again posted an argument about wrong info. Read the whole book first, honey!
Spoiler

It was clearly mentioned in later chapters how much ML tried to fix his relationship with his ex-wife. He told her clearly that her cousin has no good intentions, but she didn't care. And she also said that we're here trying to prove ourselves better by demeaning her. No, we're not. If you didn't low-rate the novel and provide false info, we won't care about what you write. You did rant blaming Fl, and ML for no reason, making them horrible which is not true. We don't want people who love this genre to not read the novel based on your misinforms. That's why people are fixing your wrong info.

[collapse]

If you're giving an opinion based on your own imagination of the story, then you're sure to receive backlash from the people who loved it! SO, STOP PLAYING THE VICTIM CARD!

Good things I didn't care 7starkiller review, and after I open her/his profile I found that she/he leave all bad comment, never good comment, and always leave one star rating. Otherwise I will not find this good novel. Ahh I'm really angry!!!! I even thought whether the likes in 7starkiller review is he/she that makes many account to vote.

First of all, there are already slice of life tag, so I think we can agree that the novel won't be such a rollercoaster.

Second, in this month I... more>> always almost drop all the novels that I read. It such a surprising things for me, to like this novel very much and didnt drop. So, I can't agree 7starkiller comment that say this novel is slow.

Third, for godsake what 7starkiller describe for ML and FL are really misleading. I really though maybe he/she have grudges with romance novel. And maybe she/he is a hyperbolic person bcause what he/she review is really too much.

The story tell about Han Cheng (ML) and Su Xiaoxiao (FL). ML is a military doctor who often go to frontline. ML past wife is also a doctor, but she died and leave a 4 year old and 1year old son. After ML past wife died, he had to go to frontline again, so to care for his children, he thought of his adopted mother to take care of them. Unfortunately, his adopted mother ab*sed and only using his wage for her biological sons and grandchildren. When he found out, he is angry and choose to find new wife to take care of his child. In my opinion what he did is right, at that time there is national chaos, if he choose to drop his job to take care his sons, then I think he will have to go to countryside. And we all know that life is harsher in countryside. It will be bad for his children in long run. We as a reader know that it will end in 4-5 years, but ML did not know that, he only know that it will end in near future and optimistic about it. But when? Well he didnt know.

I don't really like when someone says that FL is a gold digger. According to oxford language website, gold digger means a person who forms a relationship with another purely to extract money from them. Sure she want to get married because ML is an okay partner, but in exchange she will do her best to teach his children, care for them, and become her mother and not become a parasite. Well she is not saint, and I think neither we want to be saint, so I think when she said she want to have a good life to him, it is a logical things.

In conclusion, if you want to read rollercoaster and action, I think you should go far away rather than write bad review. But if you like transmigration with slice of life military theme in 70's I think you will love to read this.

Btw you have to read other novel of this author. All of the author novels are really good <<less

Novel only recommended for the extremely bored.

MC is your typical lazy gold digger female Chinese protagonist in the typical tropey Chinese time period with educated youths and tons of scum villagers. The difference is that MC immediately falls in love with ML and vice versa, thus saving a lot of story. However this romance is more minimal and instead the story is more a slice of life of MC raising her two stepsons and then adopting more children. She also eventually has her own child too.

The story is about as... more>> slow as molasses, and the most exciting parts of the novel are some scum fodder bothering MC or her children. What makes this novel low quality is the sheer lack of any punishment to villains and the pointlessness of a lot of events. For example, the scum Chinese military lets a military orphan living with his frail grandmother be continually bullied and nobody deals with this until MC comes along. The scum ML also literally would rather let his sons be ab*sed than pick them up himself and is also scummily planning on finding a random woman to watch them for his marriage. MC is lazy and agrees to marry ML since ML is handsome and rich and not for personality or anything like that. There’s an endless amount of dumb females trying to provoke the MC that she easily crushes and ML is sometimes jealous of men liking how beautiful and amazing at cooking the MC is.

The biggest issue of the novel is really that nothing happens. There’s like 10 chapters just about picking persimmons from a tree and then making food. +1/10 An ultimately bland but somewhat positive read.

P.S. These Chinese early time period stories always have insane vicious women who get away with their insanity and can only be punished by even more insane methods or lying to them about stuff. It’s always weird how nobody thinks to deal with the matter up front, like directly confronting the weird gossip lady instead of whispering for tons of chapters about how terrible the dumb cannon fodder woman is. <<less

This has got to be my favorite novel here on NU that has to do with 70's/80's/90's. Many of them either have systems, space magic or are born into dirt poor families and struggle from the very bottom. Not to say I don't enjoy these either but from my experience they get boring wayyyy too quickly especially closer to the latter half when their conditions start reaching the peak. Especially child-rearing novels where things start to feel repetitive or boring!

BUT NOT IN THIS ONE! How the MC raises the children... more>> and how she cares for her new as well as old family is so lovely and entertaining. The author has really done a great job with the characters of not just the protags but also the children. I think my fav part has to be whenever all the children gather together- MC babies, nephews, the friends etc. Overall it just has such a warm atmosphere throughout the story with the MC and ML taking the lead in guiding children and just being overall great humans and parents as well as a loving couple. I truly admire the MC for being able to give her family so much warmth all the while also meeting her iown deals and goals but doing it at the right time and just living in the moment.

i see a lot of comments speaking negatively of the novel-the most bizarre thing is that it's false accusations. Ill speak about somethings to clarify-possible spoilers ahead.

0 First of all regarding MC's ''salted fish'' remark. You need to understand that the OG body was spoiled by her family in that they allowed their daughter to concentrate on her studies since she was a child, and she has never done any sort of rural work apart from some basic cleaning and cooking. And the same applies to MC. When she transmigrated happened to be after OG committed su*cide – do you expect a modern person to live in a small village where her whole reputation has been sullied??? What will she do, farm??? Allow insults to her and her family??? Especially since the reality would be that nobody decent would accept a woman for their son who not only committed su*cide for another man but is unable to farm or related stuff. Not to mention, she is past the ideal marriageable age in their eyes. The MC as a modern person would have zero value in such conditions (even the MC mother mentions how the developing era is basically home court for MC compared to when she was unable to put her talents to use in the village-OG included.)

Not to mention, taking care of two children and managing the home are not easy AT ALL. You'd have to read to understand salted fish does not apply to the MC.

0 '' Gold digger'' I WANT TO DIE LAUGHING... LOL when?where??? Are we reading the same book???

I understand that some people may be uncomfortable with the idea of finding a husband/man to rely on or to ''get away'' but that was not the MC's main idea, She wanted to marry for her own desire as well as to reassure her family. Not to mention that she found the ML suitable for her and didn't mind his children either and would raise them well. If you ask me I would do the same. The men in this era are not known to be like modern men but they are more serious and hardworking but also loyal-especially what a good thing marrying a millitary man is... but these weren't even what she considered, she appreaciated his handsomeness as well as asked if he was able to guarantee her meat everyday (keep her well fed) in return she would raise his children well and naturally live as a married couple... and she went above and beyond. The ML also saw MC's efforts, not to mention he had a very good initial impression of her... she also treated him warmly from day 1 unlike other MC who take 30+ chapters to progress. She had no idea of his abundant wealth (its only known muchhh later) at all even when she decided to marry him only knew he had enough to support the family to eat well. The only time gold digger applies is ironically when they actually dig gold (yes they do) XD

0 SCUMMY ML?????

so someone mentions the ML comparing the MC and ex-wife and not liking how in their words 'appreciates MC just cuz shes more docile and house-wifey compared to his independent ex'. I just want to say that despite how lukewarm their relationship was he has never disrespected her or belittled herin front of anybody or even said a word of comparison to them. He mentioned her always as a great hero and has respect for her. Its true though, that he has his inner monologue appreciating the warmth that the MC has brought into the family as he was reminiscing the life with the ex. they both were military doctors and one can imagine how busy they are. Their marriage was not out of love but arranged by elders and probably felt like a task to complete for them... im assuming that they never tried to get along in an overly affectionate way and got used to their busy lives and then the ex brought in her cousin to live in their home who also clearly made ML uncomfortable as she had ideas about him and the ex took cousins side so ML would busy himself with work and try to avoid the cousin also the cousin was stealing money and food that was supposed to be used for the kids and would bully the children too but the ex would take her cousins side... the ML and ex had disagreements on this matter... Overall they probably didn't have a loving marriage and when the MC came he felt the warmness of home that he lost after becoming a young orphan... she immediately took on the role of mother after getting the children. She read them bedtime stories, made delicious meals 3 times a day, greeted him when he'd return from work always with a smile, urge him to take a nap and take care of the family in all aspects. He wasn't undermining his ex but from the beginning when he found out his children were being ab*sed he needed to take them under his care and the young children lack a mother. He needed someone to be able to willingly nurture them, and she went above and beyond anything he could have imagined. She took her role as wife seriously after they married. There was zero reluctance or any shying away from her.

I CANT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH- THE MC AND ML ARE AMAZING PARENTS. it's typical for chinese novels to have the ML spoil his daughter and act like an enemy towards his sons but it never happens here. He is a warm and loving father/uncle to the children throughout. He gives them love and attention as well as respect and guidance.

THIS IS THE BEST CHILD REARING NOVEL SET IN 70'S. The lot and pacing is so well done as well as the relationship among different families and their children... Honestly, I love the MC's mom so much! She treats MC and her new children and ML so well... ugh love her.

I definitely recommend this. <<less

This novel is a very relaxing, slice-of-life story where everything goes smoothly for our MC and all her children- except her daughter of course- are very smart.

My only issue with this novel is how despite the MC being from the modern times treats her daughter differently from her sons. The sons learn vigorous and brilliant looking calligraphy from their dad whereas the daughter learns soft and gentle looking calligraphy from MC.

The boys- even the six month old infant is told to always strive toward their goals while the daughter is... more>> told to be gentle or something. It's really ridiculous and the foreshadowing of the daughter's relationship with Zhuzi makes it even worse.

Upon first glance this story seems nice very inoffensive even with the MC's goals of continuing her education and all but when you think about it a little you realise that Yang Mei, the MLs dead wife, gave birth to two children, and during the MC's pregnancy, he still didn't know what to do when it was time to give birth. It really makes you wonder how tr*sh the ML was to the first wife. Sigh. <<less

This is an edit, since few tagged me in bold letters I thought of explaining a little.

Not sure if my phrasing was bit rude or overly critical few didn't like it. First of all I didn't review this for others to like it, I just gave my opinion you don't have to go correcting it.

Moving on, I still stick to my previous review but let me explain a bit more. I have no complaints on MC or the story, this is a slice of life and a C-novel where... more>> MC is portrayed as perfect. I only felt uncomfortable when there was a comparison monologue of ML. It's human nature to consciously or unconsciously compare things so that's not the main problem here. ML and his ex were both career oriented and probably never tried to improve their relationship. As someone mentioned yes this was an arranged marriage with no love involved and both lived like comrade-in-arms. He has respect for his ex and all that. If that was the case, then they probably would have only one kid as the two were busy and doesn't have affection and time to have a second child but since they did let me assume that their relationship was not overly affectionate but they did have feelings (I'm completely assuming this point, first time would be responsibility or more like have a kid complete the task of marriage and having a family. If there's second time (if no sketchy plot is involved) then obviously some feelings would be involved). Then ex bought cousin to live in to take care of the kids, but then cousin had ideas about ML and they quarrelled. Here I'm asking did ML really tried to have a conversation with ex? Coz no wife/women is dumb enough to not to know other women having ideas about her man. And with ML's clear explanation this could have been easily resolved but no he tried to stay away from home creating even more bigger rift between them. Let me assume one more point here, probably ex was having postpartum depression and with her family having an accident the only relative she had to lean was her cousin family, for her to lean on and trust a distant cousin family rather than her husband, you should understand how unapproachable ML should have been and she soon passed away (I don't know her cause of death). Yes, he loves his kids so decided to do a flash marriage get a wife who can take care of the kids for him and be a house wife. I also got the point and agree with FL care and concern made him have the taste of warm home. This warm home was not achieved single-handedly by FL, if ML was not cooperative probably FL would not have gotten close to him. But he showed his capability since the day they met. So my point is for one to have a happy and warm family efforts should be from both husband and wife, so was ML cooperative with ex? No idea. Did he try to mend their relationship? Don't know. But based on the things explained in his monologue he probably didn't. That's the reason I felt uncomfortable. If he could at least have the same attention and thoughtfulness to his ex then probably they would have had a different outcome and his monologue proved my point. One more thing, let me clarify if there's an explanation about ex and what happened exactly maybe I might change my opinion but this is what I currently feel now. You know the stories where jerk ML treated FL like sh*t but as soon as she behaved differently/someone transmigrated/was reborn he became interested in her and fell in love with her and then try to get back with her. That annoying and uncomfortable feeling that's the feeling I had here. If you don't like my review move on to next one or write your own one no need to impose your idea/opinion on me. Let's respect each other's opinion. You found this story great, good for you, give all the best compliments you can, I don't care. But no need to drag someone else to prove your point.

I don't do reviews for every story I read, I only do if I feel the need to do and this I did cause if someone has similar mentality as mine can get a heads up before diving into this. This is not a forum to argue on certain things just a review page read it if it matches your taste read it if not move on, as simple as that. If you want to share a different point of view on the story, do it, but don't drag someone else to prove your point and mock their opinion.

**

It's an average read as expected of slice of life tagged novel. I don't mind reading this kind of novels but one thing that pretty frustrates me is food, you don't have to explain everything you eat, it's ingredients, how it's made and all that stuffs once or twice is okay, reading it every chapter is very boring. I'm here to read a laid-back novel not a food manual.

Coming back to the story, I understand MC is a salted fish and there's still time before reform she can't do business so choose to get married. But this idea didn't sit right with me yet I continued to read as this is a novel from a completely different individuals, I shouldn't impose my principles. I have to say MC is winner in both life, in previous life she was salted fish with inheritance and some side business her life seems pretty good. In this life she got a caring family who treats her very well. ML liked her instantly, both the kids all loved her dearly (even more than biological mother) so everything is perfect for her.

But somehow I felt uncomfortable, if the ex-wife was a bad person and was alive I probably wouldn't have felt this way. ML actually compared both of his wife's quite a few times like ex-wife was strong and independent but MC is gentle and soft and always likes to smile, (it was also mentioned every man's dream is to have gentle virtuous wife and he feels fulfilled now. More like you don't have guts and feels less valued because your wife is strong and independent and can live on her own unlike someone who chose to follow you to eat meat everyday, I understood his standards very quickly) He felt refreshed and eager to comes home unlike the past where he stayed in hospital to work more efficiently. After they did the 'deed' he was like first time I don't want to wake up and go to work and kissed MC. Bro you had two kids with your late wife have you never felt that way?! All this made me really uncomfortable cause it was never mentioned ex-wife was a bad person or something. Fine ML and late-wife more like comrades than husband and wife but bro you had two kids with her and youngest is less two years old, I can also feel he never tried to lead a good life as husband and wife or tried to like her in 4 years of marriage but then he fell in love (pretty much) at first sight with MC. I don't even know how to feel or describe this feeling, I feel really bad for the ex-wife. I wouldn't have felt like this if she was a negative character but from all the information so far she seems rather a strong and maybe headstrong person <<less

I am so sad I can't read the chapters because I can't even buy coins on the main website. It's unfair to those who can't use PayPal in other countries.

It is honestly kinda annoying that these sites don't try create other options since readers are from different countries.

If I have to wait for the book to be completely free.... I always end up loosing interest.

... more>> I love 60's 70's theme and they are hardly translated.

Anyways thanks for the translation I am going to suffer for sometime and forget about it and maybe next two years it will be completed and free.

Everything is great about the story except for the fact FL is basically feeding her brothers using the ml’s money. To a certain limit helping your relatives is okay. I don’t mind if she was just taking care of her parents.
Spoiler

but in this novel she has four kids of her own. Sometimes I think she doesn’t understand the value of money because she has been rich in her past life. I can still understand spending thousands of yuan on her maternal family using ML’s money but after reaching capital she is planning to buy a house each for her parents and her two brothers. I prefer the stories where FL will guide the family on how to make money instead of just taking the responsibility of making sure her relatives live a rich life. Plus the thing with her restaurant business, she just met a totally random stranger that seems pretty nice. So she offers her 50% share in her whole business, not just one restaurant but any restaurant she will open in the future, are you playing house house instead of doing business. I know it’s a novel and everything will turn out great for our FL even if she makes the ML destitute but throwing money everywhere and has zero awareness about it, she will turn out to be a millionaire. But it just gives me the ick, like do it properly use your brain don’t make everything seem so effortless

I don’t know about the 1-2 star ratings. I loved this novel. It’s a slice of life story set in the 1970’s and it’s endearing to read how the cute buns grew up to be big buns. The family dynamics are heartwarming. I’d recommend this to readers who like slice of life stories with cute children and doting family members.

I loved the pace of the story. It's relaxing. Slight drama and they ended well without angst. They do carry the reality of the 70's during the reformation period. It's mostly slice of life and happenings during that era. Life is not easy. Justice is never perfect in any situation unless in novel. Gossip is harming yet not everyone is built fully confident to fight back. Some need supporting friends or family to build backbone characters.

FL show how knowledge is important for future no matter which era you live in.... more>> She shown caring for all of her cubs, even not her own. Children in a way is the future. She is open minded enough not to blame children yet hopeful they will have a better path with correct up bringing. Of course the golden finger 'Food is the best thing to bring love and connections' it wasn't easy during the era of scarcity of material.

But yah.... cooking tend to be a filler in the stories.. but darn they made me appreciate more the easy way we can get food in the modern era. Imagine only eat meat once a month or most frequent once a week. I might die myself.

ML got lucky as he did pick FL as wife. As shown not all male can get a good wife nor all female can get a good husband. It's life by luck and fate. He not bad as he do care about his kids and strive to correct the mistake of trusting the old witch. He care for FL and the kids is showñ in his actioñ to provide and guide them. Not sure why he is call scum.

Anyway it's a good story to past time, doesn't eat brain cells yet enjoying too. Made me be more appreciating the peaceful era we are in now... although it's not perfect.. life must go on. <<less

The first seventy chapters or so are good but then the story begins to feel repetitive, slacking, there is this distinctive feeling of serious lack of tension or plot. So, I get it why some readers love this relaxing, almost stagnant story while others drop it.

This is a story of a woman with a unique gift, she is a social genius with an extremely high EQ and a marketing genius (which was her specialization as a university grad in our times) who, strangely enough, is completely uninterested in social involvement... more>> (professionally speaking). She only desires to be a wife and a mom, an occupation which, with many kids, each one being unusually demanding due to their unique giftedness, and a not so simple husband, is already a 24/7 job.

So, the story focuses mostly on the domestic bliss, on her superb cooking skills (she was a wealthy food blogger before transmigrating) and her superb social skills as she loves her husband and their kids and protects them to let them grow safely enough.

The unusual feature of this 1970's novel is

Spoiler

that the FL's (the original girl's) farming family is not dirt poor nor evil. What a surprise! She is the daughter of a captain of the production team in their village and her amazing mom is a genius seamstress and tailor. Their daughter was very smart and a good learner, most likely number one in their province, and her parents let her learn, freeing her from the obligation to work in the commune's fields to earn work points. She still had to cook for the family and babysit her two little nephews though.

So, no, she was not spoiled. Learning, studying, especially in China, where there is a lot of rote memorization involved (Chinese characters, idioms, and Chinese poetry have to be memorized, over a hundred thousand of them) is very time-consuming, demanding.

The FL herself is not a gold digger meaning she did not choose the ML to become wealthy or to strip him of his wealth. She only asked him if he would feed her, if there would be meat on their table. In her first life, she happened to date a man who was very stingy with money spent on food, and she was a wealthy foodie and a talented cook, so that was a sore spot for her, such incompatibility of values.

About the ML

Spoiler

Well, he is a sexy guy. A smart and busy surgeon, the head of the surgery department (or of the entire military hospital, I am not sure), and a medical researcher.

What he did to his kids after his wife died was practically unforgivable but to him it seemed like the best choice of all available choices at the time. He left two tiny boys (a newborn and a four years old) with his own evil stepmother, a woman so bad that he himself as a kid in his past escaped her home. And left to war, to work as a battlefield medic where he was so badly injured himself that it took him a year to get back to his kids.

When he returned a year later and saw his emaciated and all over injured kids, with broken bones, he was absolutely floored. How the kids survived this year, it was a miracle.

Thank God, he found himself a matchmaker, the matchmaker found him a couple of candidates and he chose the FL. The FL comes to rescue all of them, the dad and the kids. She teaches and inspires him to be a great dad and a good husband.

It's not bad, but there's a lack of plot. Which you expect in this kind of novel, but it's filled with constant compliments of the MC by others. Every time MC does one small good thing, prepare for paragraghs of the locals praising her. Unfortunately it's a common pitfall of chinese novels to constantly try to make the MC shine, often to the point of it being cringey. It's a shame because I like the MCs personality. Even the ML is okay. He has his flaws, but is learning from... more>> his past mistakes. Maybe I'll get back to reading it in the future, but it's a bit dull of a read where I left off. <<less

Binge reading this in 2 days and completely didn't regret it.

The story is typical 1970s china setting but with a refreshing twist.

MC family is a rare family who respects scholars and ML is also a rare 'widower' with 2 children. Not many story has this setting. So this story becomes a combination of slice of life and daily raising cubs diary. It's full of warmth from beginning to end.

High end of 3 stars. A simple slice of life story of a salted fish MC who transmigrated into the body of a much loved daughter of farmers in the 70's. Following the ways at that time, she agreed to marry the ML and take care of his two kids. With simple gentleness and kindness, she wins the love of the ML and the buns then in her easy going ways, proceeded to live through the time to when progress in China is picked up again and became a business... more>> magnate. This novel is is slightly boring (totally my fault because I tend to find slice of life stories dull) and no matter what the MC thinks herself, she is completely a Mary sue because everything went her way. Her kids, biological and not, were all smart, beautiful, and well behaved. Her business ventures were successful, and her walking hormone of a husband loved and cherished her unconditionally. There were some stuff that was unbelievable to me but then again I am quite cynical. This novel was an okay read though I'm sure it didn't need so many chapters. The extras were nice and as usual, I liked the side couple pairing more than the protagonists. <<less

I found a gem!

I thought the story would be boring looking at the stars rating. But the dynamic between MC and the cubs really heals me... 🥰

And eventho few lines/convos between the cubs and other characters a bit boring because it's too mom-centered, it's forgivable!

5 stars - good slice of life / calm story

If you are looking for a good slice of life or like a calming story then this one is a good read. Especially if you just want something light and not overly complicated

The FL just wants to fulfill the dream of the previous body’s owner and at the same time have a good life which is nice. After reading this I became curious with the food that was described and at some times made me try looking and cooking them (which... more>> I kinda failed/succeeded)

The story and over all flow is pleasant and a good read. <<less

It's a calm and peaceful story. The MC is a bit OP, but it's her own acquired skills, no magic. And the characters around the MC are all good, villains appear only for a short time. The interactions between family members are touching.

Very sweet.

A very nice reading~

Author wrote the story in a laid-back kind of tone. Not much drama, and full of hope..

Spoiler

ML actually fell in 'love' at first sight (he was given 2 'choices' which he found unexpected and a bit 'rude').

The leads got married without getting the certificate first, which was rare (I don't think I've read any like this so far).

Spoiler

ML was full of praises for the FL (he fell deeper in love with her every day). He felt that he has picked a treasure (which was kind of endearing).

FL was very calm and clever. She's a 'southener' who is sweet and soft.. but also firm and careful. FL aims to improve her quality of life, and those she considers family.

Original FL (since FL was a transmigrator) seems to be no different from her (that it feels like they're the same person, except that the original FL was kind of silly since she committed su*cide for having her heart broken by a 'scummy' educated youth. Anyway, other than that, they're basically giving off the exact same vibe)..

[collapse]

The element of 'expert in cooking to conquer the world' is there... but the most important theme of the story is actually 'education', which is gratifying. I really like how intelligent, smart and educated their family is~

I also like the side characters and their stories! 👍🏻

The story doesn't really have an 'ending' to all the main characters.. it feels like they're still living their lives, and their adventures are still ongoing.. a very HE indeed (to keep on living) 🌈🌥️
