Xia Xingcheng, with average acting skills and appearance, had been a small star in the entertainment industry for six years. But one day, a famous director invited him to act in a gay movie titled “Gradual Distance” with numerous award-winning movie emperor Yang Youming. In the movie, they had a sweet love; out of it, there was polite coldness. In the movie, they had a sad ending; out of it, there were ambiguous feelings. The contrast between what was in the movie and what was outside of it often made Xia Xingcheng unable to find himself. Because of Yang Youming’s guidance, he had stepped into the ranks of actors, but also because of Yang Youming, he couldn’t distinguish between what was reality and what wasn’t.

Xia Xingcheng didn’t expect that the movie would finally push him into the abyss of pain and happiness.

The start of this novel is genuinely one of the most beautifully painful discovery of love that I have read in a modern Danmei. I normally don't love entertainment scene novels, but this one is good. I like how they describe the process of getting into character and how that affects them.

I think the rest of the novel is a very different tune to that first part, but it is still enjoyable.

I would give the first part 10/5 and the rest probably 3/5. I don't think it is bad, but... more>> the change of tune and all the movie details, some I appreciated as it gave us insight to MC's growth, but a lot of it felt a bit like dragging it on.

I don't think I can ever let go of how they filmed that first movie, and they explored their incapacity to separate from their characters at that point 😭😭😭😭

It is extremely intense and hot, the tension between them is 1000/10, before they are "officially" together. Which still has a lot of spice but it's different, still nice tho.

Amazing translation, too! I can see how hard the translator worked, they did such a good job. <<less

MC Xia Xingcheng x ML Yang Youming - An appealing entertainment plot about two mature men falling in love. Their emotional awakening, feelings and struggles are portrayed realistically. I enjoyed the plot device of blurred lines between the movie they are shooting and their real life.

The one that i'll always come back if I ever craved for an entertainment novel with superb plot and writing. Seriously, there're no one other than my golden assistant and this one in entertainment novels cycle. May be I'm not thoroughly enough for searching one but I really hope there would be novel like this more.

The tension!! Is palpable for most of the first half of the novel. Each chapter is gripping and engaging, not just romantically but also in terms of the movie’s story and their acting abilities. It was deliberately kept vague in terms of the parallels between the movie and real life and that kept things exciting.

The post sweetness was partially fraught with the potential for it to collapse, but the eventual fluff was very sweet. Laughed out loud at some parts.

Tingly feelings, laughter, but no tears or outright angst.

I wished the... more>> pre-movie part was longer so that I could get a stronger sense of MC’s character before he started acting and ‘changing’ so that it’s clearer the influence the acting had on him. But besides that, it’s very well-written and beautifully translated.

The final smut at the extras was the cherry on top of the cake, hehe.

Almost favourite because I would personally like a high tension novel like this just embrace the angst, and I had a hard time figuring out MC’s true character and whether their feelings were real (which was kind of the main point though haha). Would definitely re-read! <<less

Highly recommended to read!!!

This simply exceeded my expectations! It was just great! The plot, especially the writing was top notch. Compared to the shallow showbiz novels, this had a depth, that was truly commendable.

The ML and the MC met to shoot a film and their love story grew along with the plot of the film itself. The author clearly described how the MC drifted between the film and his real feelings, how confused he was, how he tried to find himself back again. When the MC confirmed his feelings, when... more>> he got the chance to chase after the ML, he did not think twice and took action. No matter how other people persuaded him telling not to, he stayed true to his feelings and was able to find his happiness with the person he loves.

The ML's true feelings were a mystery, in the first half of the novel, it was challenging to deduce what he thought about the MC. But later, through his actions, he proved that he loved just as much the MC loved him. The ML was always calm and mature due to his age. He always stayed silently behind the MC loving him, protecting him, taking care of him.

The emotional struggles the characters went through were so vivid, which brought this novel to a higher level. There were several films, each of them had a different plot which added an extra color.

Compared to other novels, where although they have a MC, they still explain what is going on with the ML, but here the author sticked to the MC's POV which left the ML in a complete blank position. We could only assume what the ML thought, just by his actions and expressions. To be honest, I can not help but mention it as a short-coming. A POV of the ML was given in the extras, which left me excited when I found it. It was a pity that the author did not mix it, in between the main chapters.

This novel was a piece of art to me. Totally worth it! Read this and you will find out how amazing this book is!!! <<less

This one belongs to my all-time favorite entertainment novel.😍⭐ I have reread this novel lots of time, especially the ABO. I fell in love in that extra part. This novel is realistic and well-paced. MC has been admiring the ML (movie emperor) then they get paired up in a BL movie. This was the reason that MC falls harder to the ML despite knowing that ML is already married. Well, when MC discovered that ML has been divorced he started pursuing the ML. The frustration, the hesitation is so realistic.... more>> I can feel the struggles of the characters to get through everything. When they become official, ML protected the MC against the harsh entertainment circle. The ML lie-low with his career but he is the strong backer and biggest supporter of the MC. i really enjoyed this I cried of happiness of course

unfortunately/fortunately I keep back and forth from seeing this novel over and over again, I don’t dare to because there’s mybottom line that I can’t cross myself the reason being ML is in married relationship and then I think about “here it goes this title again in my library, well then let’s just read it”

and omg, it’s actually not the way it is!! I almost hate myself from keeping this good novel rotting in the library

this carefully written novel often... more>> maybe really based on reality. Its so real yo, the feeling and the meaning I sometimes feel abit bitter

the characters growth portrayed very beautifully it has flaws yes but its good enough, plot arrangements and gradual progress keeps me entertained.

whats so good about it is that is pure love, leave a sweet taste in my mouth oh how I wish I came like this story again

Interesting but has some flaws. Good translation.

Like summary says, MC and ML relationship starts with the movie characters and MC can't distinguish whatever feelings are his's or the character's. Its because he has to immersed in the role in order to perform well.

He is huge fan of ML and the admiration became affection.

Overall, a fun and enjoyable read set in the entertainment industry with some angst in the first part.

The story is about two actors whose first movie together leads to their romance. The author does a fantastic job blending the movie scenes and real life, really showing how the emotions of the actors’ roles were affecting the actors personally. A big plus is that the movie plots were really compelling stories within the story. It’s a realistic depiction of falling in love, the blurring of acting and reality, and maintaining a... more>> secret relationship in a society where your s*xual orientation affects your ability to get work.

The only part I did not like was the method the MC employed on the ML to get together. However, there is one very fulfilling extra that makes up for this negative part. <<less

This must be the best mature romance danmei I've ever read so far. I love how their love developed from start to end. I greatly admired how the author showed how their budding feelings were intermingled with the characters they're portraying for the movie how they eventually accepted both feelings as part of them.

I don't usually write reviews but I make an exception. This novel is very well written and translator did a well good job. Character and relationship growth was wholesome. The journey of MC and ML's discovery of their sexuality and love for each other was beautifully written, the sense of vulnerability was really well written. This can make a beautiful drama.

On a side note I decided to skim the manhua and I will give a little warning for those who are curious

the art is well done, it follows the story nicely but the official translation Americanized the names. I mean a big part of the story are the MC and MLs name but they changed the name to Asher and Remington. No Ming ge! He calls him Remmy.... they also get rid of 1 of the twins, only Dong Dong in the manhua 🥺

I did like how the manhua integrated the ML's thought processes during the initial filming so we see the ML falling for the MC, it basically took the first extra chapter and showed it in real time. I wish they would have shown more of the ML's thoughts. This is one story that I wanted both sides thoughts

I dont uds the bad reviews. I really enjoyed this book so much. It was sweet and real and I liked seeing how the MC grew and how the ML healed. I also love how they're so different with everyone else but can be their true selves with each other.

It was fun peeking into the world of acting as well.

Not much angst, but sufficient obstacles to keep it interesting.

This story was very well-written with realistic plot and well developed characters.

At some point, the story will make the readers think that the two MC's are just in love because they were affected by their movie characters, however the author drew a clear line of when the MC actually started to like "ML" and not just his character.

There was a clear line between admiration and romantic like, however it became blurred as one started to have an ambiguous relationship to the subject of their admiration. This is what I saw... more>> from MC's character development. He admired ML and started to like him as Fang Jianyuan, however there was one chapter that gave emphasis to the fact that while Fang Jianyuan started to fall for Yu Haiyang, the MC also started to develop feelings from admiration to romantic like because of Yang Youming's actions himself, and not as his movie character. And I think this chapter drew a clear line with MC's feelings between reality and movie in the story.

Some are also confused and giving bad reviews because of their sexuality etc. The ML was and is "gay" from the very start. He might be married in the past, however through out the whole story it was clear that his ex-wife Yuan Qian was the one who pursued him but he was never actually attracted. ML kept acting with different female co-stars, however unlike with MC he was also never attracted or develop any physical attraction with any woman. In the extras, it was then cleared up more how the ML entered the relationship with his ex-wife because of the idea of "trying it out" suggested by his ex-wife, however their relationship never worked and ended up being a mess where the ML became exhausted both physically and psychologically. He never felt devoted and was the passive one in their relationship compared to his later relationship to MC. He was gay, but found it out later after he developed s*xual attraction and romantic feelings for a man (MC). MC on the other hand might be pan or bi. It was said in one of the chapters that he himself know that he wasn't gay because he was also attracted to female in the past. But it wasn't cleared up what his actual sexuality is.

The conflicts of the story was realistic, especially the idea that not everyone around them was accepting of their relationship (since I read a lot of stories where even tho the couple quite turned out taboo, every side character just accepts it like it's nothing out of the ordinary). ML was more than 10 yrs older than MC, had an ex-wife, and a top tier actor, while MC's career can be easily crushed with some unacceptable gossip. There were people bound to reject this arrangement in fear for MC's future. The characters, especially the two main one was perfectly fleshed out. The side characters have big roles in the story, have their own personality, and not just there to be a decoration. The author wrote each drama as if you were entering a different world inside a novel. You'll be curious and sympathize with the movie's characters also, not just to ML and MC. I'm still curious what happened to Fang Jianyuan and Yu Haiyang in real life tho.

This is getting too long, but I still have a lot to say. I'll sum it up to please read this story, it's worth it. <<less

I love the author’s style of narrating her story, depict the characters, polish them into flesh gradually.

MC is a man who had girlfriend in the beginning, yet they don’t love each other. He change girlfriend every few months, nothing special about his prev relationship. S*um or not, we can’t judge him, since he didn’t cheat on them either. ML already married when they filming the movies that will change their life forever.

At first this background didn’t make me comfortable, since I firmly believe in 1v1 love story. But the more... more>> I read, the more I understand why MC getting too immersed in his role. First, he’s a big fan of ML. Second, ML’s charisma is too great for him to deny. Some reviewer said they don’t understand what makes MC fall too deep. But I get it. Sometimes you attracted first, super duper attracted, and gradually fall deeper once you taste the relationship in much better than you imagine. That’s what happen with me and my partner. And the marriage will explained later on.

Even ML’s pov explained only later on the extra, yet author’s style makes it clear for me why he fall for MC. As an excellent actor who taste the failure of marriage, he knows how to differentiate which one is fake admiration, which one is pure infatuation. Who won’t be moved with those adoration spilled all over from our MC? And MC’s personality genuinely will lighten up his boring daily life later on. I love how clingy and how naughty our MC once he got his man. They’re so cute, so sweet, some of the subtle comedic tone enough to make me grin all over. No big angst either, at least I didn’t cry like when I read author’s perfection.

I honestly suggest all of you reading all author’s work, since she’s that great! And the translation is superb! <<less

I immediately bought the book after reading (great translation btw). Raw and addicting novel. I wanted something deeper to sink my teeth into, and this was exactly that. The author didn't try to pander to the readers with gimmicks or tropes- it felt genuine.

Your gender was apparent when you're born, however your own s*xual preference was determined by yourself.

I'm happy being fed with 🐕 food 😁 throughout the novel.

A very mature and refreshing take on life and love in show-biz. The Star Around The Sun isn't anything out of the box, but it has the right amount of, what I can only call, angst, in the beginning, emotions, and dog food in the end.

What enamored me in the novel was the wholesome love that the leads shared (which tbh is the main focus of the story). The only part I was disappointed with was how rushed the ending was. I don't know how the author could have spanned... more>> out the end, but it could have had a good 3-4 chapters for itself, considering the pace of the entire novel. I hope the extras will make it better, but I genuinely enjoyed reading the book as a whole!

The main novel is so good and I really love reading this kind of realistic stories I think their love start so suddenly I didn't catch when they start have true feeling to each other I think I have to read it again to catch some of the event but with that I really love this novel

YYM personality was so amazing and XXC so lovable the age gap is so much between them I prefer if it was less than ten years but that's ok still they are so adorable together <<less
