The Selfish Gene

Description

I forcibly occupied everything belonging to Ji Chenfeng, his status, family origins, and relatives…… Despite being completely aware that I am just a counterfeit, I nevertheless seized the magpie’s nest as a turtledove myself without any remorse.

I was born with selfish genes flowing through my bones: greedy and shameless to the extreme; desiring to obtain everything for myself. Furthermore……I don’t intend to change.

A notion of goodwill is accompanied by ulterior motives; a notion of greed is accompanied by repentance.

When a scumbag is capable of loving someone, it’s perhaps the greatest retribution that god has bestowed upon them.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE HNQ NOVELS!!! Honestly I think it's because scum shou is my favorite trope lmao.

The story starts of with us finding out that the MC isn't actually his father's biological father and was switched out during birth, to which he confronts his biological mother and well, a lot of drama ensues. He starts approaching the ML who is his biological's mother current son.

The MC does not have a pretty personality, in fact many people might dislike him, but again I love imperfect characters. Like the summary, he... more>> is selfish, greedy, and he doesn't really care about other people. My memory is hazy since I've read this quite a while ago, but MC does a lot of actions that are disappointing.

The ML is a quiet and cold vet who has hearing disabilities,
Spoiler

MC pays for the ML's ear surgery which he uses to blackmail (?) his biological mother.

[collapse]

I disagree with a lot of the MC's actions, and I do think that he doesn't deserve the ML, but honestly they are perfect for each other. The ML is honestly quite sweet and cute, he is very quiet and kind towards animals. I would label this story as husband crematorium lmao. The MC had to grovel a lot to win back the ML.

This story isn't fluffy, it's has a lot of dog blood, angst, and drama. I think it may have some tw's but sorry I forgot!

The extras are quite long, it's about the MC's best friend and his childhood rival and tbh their love story is wayy more dog bloody than the main CP loll. It's extremely hard finding the extras and I'm still in the middle of reading it but it's really good too, I love the dynamic! Also TW noncon, dysfunctional relationship!

Honestly, every Hui nanque novel is top tier if you enjoy dog blood! I'm sorry if I didn't put any TW's but I've read this ages ago and my memory is bad lol.

(I'm still waiting for my favorite one to get translated orz 😭) <<less

Scum shou MC and husband chasing crematorium dogblood. Angst and pain, past trauma.

Take the 'unreliable narrator' tag seriously - the MC lies not just to the ML, but also to himself. I felt so bad for the MC, he's had a terrible childhood (one of the author's favorite tropes - bad parenting) and the story raises the question, what is the worst outcome if you had to choose between either:

  1. Rich parents and no financial worries, but a cold and distant father, dead mother, child abuse indirectly caused by parental neglect, and then loveless family (in the MC's case only his aunt took care of him, and seems like she was too young to be a proper influence/mother figure), and no choice when it comes to career or romantic relationships.
  2. Poor parents, lots of financial hardship, bad health/disability due to the poor environment, but loving parents who care for you and the freedom as an adult to choose the career and love life you want, despite lack of money and shabby living conditions.
I know I'd pick option 2, and while the MC keeps claiming that he feels repulsed by the ML's poor living environment, he's subconsciously filled with rage and jealousy because the ML had the love and care he never experienced as a child. Despite everything the ML goes through, he... more>> has it better than the MC, and the MC knows it.

The MC is a prickly character - he suffers from childhood trauma, and this has caused a substance addiction and anxiety that he tries to overcome without really coming to terms with it at first. He finds out that his mother, a working class woman who was hired by a rich family as a nanny and wet nurse for their child (the mother died giving birth) switched the babies so her own son could grow up rich, while she took the rich family's child as her own. The ML grew up as her son in a poor neighborhood, but is the real heir to the wealth that the MC has taken for granted. The MC comes up with a scheme to seduce the ML - who's gay, while the MC considers himself straight - to prevent him from ever taking the MC's place with rich his family in case the mother ever tells her adopted son the truth.

The MC has a somewhat violent temper and represses his feelings - and his actions towards the ML are horrible, with lies and deceit, but the story is from his perspective, so while his actions are inexcusable, you get to understand what drives him.

The MC's rich father is horrible - one of the author's many parental figures that are utterly terrible human beings who should never have had kids, and despite the fact that the MC expresses some understanding for him later on, I personally refuse to forgive him - when he

Spoiler

just cut off his relationship with the MC, who was raised in his family like their son, and suffered horrible child abuse from a nanny because his father completely neglected him, and was only rescued because his 15-year old (!) aunt found out about the abuse - and the MC finally confronts the dad's neglect, and the dad responds with violence (!!) and afterwards completely abandons his non-biological son by printing an official statement, after the MC was hospitalized due to an overdose right after the confrontation and almost died (!!!), and he never even visited him in the hospital (!!!!!).

How big a piece of sh*t can a person be?! And then the dad immediately just tries to switch the MC for his biological son the ML, just so someone can inherit the family firm, despite the ML having zero wish to acknowledge the relationship (having already grown up with actual good and loving parents) and having zero business knowledge or suitable education for the job, unlike the MC.

And on top of that, the dad tries to split up the MC and ML. I get that he's homophobic, but that's just cherry on the top. He's a tr*sh person and the fact that he tragically lost his wife is no excuse.

[collapse]

The ML is such a nice guy. The typical cold gong type that HNQ likes to write, but so sweet and caring. No wonder the MC falls like a ton of bricks, who wouldn't? He did not deserve all the deceit from the MC, and I do think he forgave a little too easily, but he's so utterly devoted to the MC that I can't blame him.

I admit I cried a lot when all the heartbreak happened. Not something I normally do, but in this novel it was just so heart-wrenching. I think this is one of the best novels I've read by the author so far (have read everything by HNQ that's on NU). I'm not sure what I think about the side CP, it was a bit weird how there's all this drama going on with them but you don't really find out about it until the extras. It was okay I guess, but for me the MC and ML was the main draw. <<less

This book is a bit different from her other works as the smut were all metaphoric. Quite well written and it gives you the space for imagination and you don't have to search all over the place for the "uncensored" copy. The earlier part of the novel reminded me of Deluge. I love scum shous.

In order to prevent the secret of them being switched at birth from being spilled, Sang Nian (MC) wanted to keep Ji Chenfeng (ML) under his eye thus he planned to seduce ML so that he... more>> would fall for him and be dependent on him. ML wasn't as gullible and MC ended up falling hard for him instead. The MC did have some painful childhood and I constantly hurt for him but he did scummy things to the ML and deserves the crematorium. I like how MC faced up to his

own alcoholic and medication reliance problem by checking himself into rehab.

[collapse]
It is not an easy step for him and you really see him change for the better.

ML is a softy at heart despite seemingly cold and a little vinegar jar. He's another example of the perfect husband. The extras showing ML's POV is really sweet. I wanted to share some of his cute actions so putting them under spoiler:
Spoiler

How he kept MC's clothes after the breakup and stash them like a nest and sleeps with his smell, how he picked up smoking mint cigarettes from MC, him framing up MC's greeting cards, being the perfect housekeeper etc.

[collapse]
There is also 22 extras chapters for the side couple. I didn't support the side couple so much at first because I didn't like Shi Hao. The extras gradually won my heart even though the main couple is still the best. <<less

I really love scum MC/chasing the crematorium (husband version) novels, and this was a really good one at that. I don't have much to offer that the reviewer FrostyDragon hasn't already said (their review is honestly a perfect overview of the novel) but here are my thoughts anyway:

There's a quote that's stuck with me for a while, and I always feel the need to mention it whenever I read a well executed crematorium novel, it goes a little something like: "Sometimes, forgiveness is not about the extent of cruelty, but... more>> how badly the forgiveness is needed. We forgive because we need to, or the other person needs to."

And I think it's particularly applicable here. We see things in the MC's POV, and as the other reviewers have pointed out, he is not at all a reliable narrator (a common trope by this author! But I eat it up every time). He goes on and on about how he's living the better, more perfect life, and how the ML's life is beneath him, but who really had it better? Is it better to be rich but emotionally neglected, physically abused, and alone; or poor but surrounded by family and genuine love? Neither of them had perfect, or absolutely disastrous lives, but only one ever got to receive any form of parental love and guidance.

The ML didn't deserve what the MC did to him. Far from it. But the MC repents, fully and genuinely, and maybe our ML knew that the MC needed his forgiveness and love more than anything else.

Food for thought.

One of my amazing reads. 🥲 Though I didn't cry, but it was overall very well written and definitely satisfying to read.

Love how the cliché switched at birth can turn out into something wonderful.

I love how the unrestrained, despicable and bad tempered the MC was (maybe cause we're the same in personality only lol). I love how sheepish but cold ML is on the outside, but really a beast for his babiii (really love how HNQ writes her love scenes metaphorically).

It also played out the meaning of familial love transcends... more>> blood or family relations. Just like how his aunt showed him love and support until the end. The only thing that left an impression on me is the fact that he really didn't have deep feelings for his biological mother. I'm guessing we really can't force emotional attachments simply because of blood relations. <<less

This was so good. The ML is super green flag, not the usual MLs out there. The MC has a lot of flaws but I like that he's changed so much for the ML. I pitied the ML due to the MCs strategy of winning him over, I was seriously mad at the MC for doing that to the ML. But at the end, I'm just happy they ended up together. 😭 Where to read the extras btw?

Ahhh, this is... an accident.

I haven't read this yet...I just read inferior by nature and went to checked out the author's other works, when I scrolled down too hard that I reached the end so quickly, and when I was about to scroll up, I cl**ked the ratings by accident TT. Furtunately, I didn't cl**ked on 2 stars or one or something.

But still, it can't be changed anymore, so I'll just read it now, and comment my reviews. But I think it's great too.

I just read Inferior by Nature, and... more>> my eyes were all swollen from crying. I dunno if I can take on this another drama, but well...I still want to read more of the author's books...

This, I'll take this accident as destiny and go to read it directly.

Sigh~

[edited]

Done! Read the main story! I stopped reading and haven't read the extras yet. Anyway, I read it straight, and I felt tired of crying.

I'll rate it 5/5. The 3 star was a mistake!!

That's it. I have nothing to write on the review.

I recommend it very much. Its also short, I read two of the author's novel in a day... and the mtl is easy to read too. <<less

This story ML gong has to be the most useless ML in the history of BL stories. All he contributed to the story was making MC's life worse. I don't see what's the point of making ML this useless?

The story is good tho. This is the third story I've read of the author and the author did great job, as always. Not my favorite of the author (my favorite is the first one I've read of this author, a couple in contract falling in love and one lost memories bc... more>> of car accident), but still a good read. <<less

It’s really good. ML is despicable but very relatable. It’s only human that people are selfish. MC is patient sweet.
