The Second Coming of Gluttony

“The son of god Gula has returned.”

I was lost in the world of gambling.

I turned my back on my family and even betrayed my lover.

I wasted every day of my life.

It was a life of tr*sh.

The reality told me thus:

That I would amount to nothing no matter what I did.

In order to change my pathetic life, I chose fantasy, instead.

Even then, it was the same story.

I wondered if salvation would come at the end of the long road.

But, I was forced to kneel down in defeat in front of a powerful entity.

The tower I built up with my own hands crumbled into nothingness.

Just for once, I dearly wished to know the truth about myself.

“Come closer, my child…”

I will not hold back this time.

Novel is well written and I like MC hardworking nature.

... more>>[MC is a gambling addict and a scumbag who rob money from his own family, due to his behavior his ex leaves him.

We have to know why MC became a gambler in the first place. He got his special power when he is a kid.

He used his power to test its limitations and slowly he became a glamber so he can earn money fast for his girlfriend and her sister who are poor at that time and lost their family.

He gambled a lot, got addicted and lost his power by overusing it.

As we known in starting chapters MC is got at studies and cooking but due to his glambing habits he lost his family and girlfriend.

If his girlfriend has stopped him before he became an addict, MC will be a good brother to his siblings and a good boyfriend for his ex.]

MC thinks that he don't have talent but in his previous life he may no be the strongest human in the paradise (except gods) but he is one of the strongest people who survived the war and got his wish (Sending his will or whatever to his previous self) granted by the god gluttony.

I like some side characters- one is his representative who send him to the paradise, she struggle in her life to get to the position and supports MC a lot after seeing his potential if not for her MC wouldn't have been free and be a s*ave like his previous self. <<less

A good serie indeed, author really likes to show the growth of characters, MC and side characters, sadly once sidekicks had the growth they are forgotten by author.

It has very emotional parts, good ones indeed not cringy like.

My only problem is tat MC is as*xual af :S

LitRPG written in Korean. By that I don't mean just the premise or setting but the style as well. Might look new here, but there are dozens in the western world.

May update after I reread.

The author needs to stop using the phrase "smacked his/her lips" every f****** chapter, it pissing me off.

Every single chapter a character does something then another one smacks his lips like WTF is this bullsh*t.

I really like this story don't get me wrong but this novel needs to fix this sh*t.

Smacking my lips I hate this sh*t

It's just a comment from me about the author. I bet the guy likes necrophilia with how much women are killed in the nude in the story. Yikes. But still, the plots are better than average and I quite like it. But why the heck is the author keeps on emphasising on

I truly love this story. MC doesnt feel like some allmighty god completing all stuff only on his own, yes he has some cheaty abilities and some plot armor, but he doesnt work all alone and is not the strongest of his friends (yet) yes usually he is the one to complete the task in the end but it truly feels he would not acomplish it without others which is nice.
It nice to read novel where its not only MC moving on his path and all others are just passerby.

Easily top 5 novels I've read. Marathon-ed it from c1 to the latest chapter in about 2 weeks.

MC character development is amazing and very realistic.

The author paid attention to tiny details which plays out 100+ chapters later.

Translator by Fudge of Wuxiaworld is topnotch -- made me very tempted to pay for advance chapters.

Definitely do pick it up if you like Solo Leveling.

Some critic: harem as usual, with MC avoiding such encounters despite girls throwing themselves at him. Occasionally forgets to use his skills.

I really enjoy reading this but I just had to deduct one star due to a major fallicy in behind the story. I still suggest it's worth a read because it's got action, well thought out characters and great translation.

So getting back to the major error, it basically has to do with how majority of Earthlings are ruining Paradise. I felt this was really weak because the Gods should have enforce a better selection criteria and methods. The entry rules just left a lot of scumbags into Paradise. Anyway that's just the most glaring complaint I have to otherwise a very solid LN.

A surprisingly good series that broadly deconstructs a lot of isekai tropes while at the same time seems to revel in the usual, cookie-cutter korean novel tropes, all of it held together by strong character writing and a solid narrative of self-betterment and small acts leading to large consequences over time.

Premise:

The protagonist, Seol, is a gambling addict and a generally terrible person. However, he receives the vague memories and, more importantly, regrets of his future self, who used an opportunity to move to a fantasy world as part of an... more>> effort by said world's gods (each representing one of the seven deadly sins, hence the title) to stop inter-dimensional invaders from taking over. Upon receiving his future self's feelings, he vows to turn his life around, yet with the only two things at his disposal being some vague memories, and his ability to see danger or opportunity through a skill called Nine Eyes, and no outstanding talent to speak of, he has to fight a constant uphill battle to reach his goal.

Setting:

The world is unusually interesting and well-detailed for an isekai. Originally, when the first wave of Earthlings moved in, with their blessings and god-given powers, it used to be a classic heroic fantasy. However, power corrupts, and over time infighting over resources led to the current state of affairs, where recruitment have been taken over by international companies and crime-syndicates, the heroes of the first generation are replaced by thugs and people ens*aved by contracts, the wealthy and powerful exploit the downtrodden as they are bickering over scraps of resources, with the elites getting richer, et cetera.

That said, the basic premise is intriguing, and it is explained and explored well, so as much as I am tired of the same unsubtle allegories about the predatory Korean corporate-capitalist system, it is still some of the strongest world-building I have read in a good while.

As for the metaphysics, it is a soft lit-RPG system. Magic, qi, monsters, and other related fantasy elements exist independently of the system. There are stats, but instead of numerical values, they are given indicators, such as Intermediate (High), (aka, being at the upper end of what would be considered an intermediate level of that attribute), and there are also skills that are related to classes. Both of these can be improved/learned by practice, or by spending points gained from leveling. Levels are not gained by getting XP, but by the gods looking at the achievements of the character and deciding whether they are ready or not, with different gods giving access to different classes.

Characters:

We have our MC, who starts out as a true good-for-nothing, neck-deep in gambling dept, excommunicated by his family... and then he receives the equivalent of several years worth of character development, and starts acting on it. At his core, he is a nice, if somewhat naive and often very emotional character, and so far the story seems to focus on not just making him OP (which he technically is, for his level, except he is constantly surrounded by people who can easily kick his ass due to a difference in levels and experience), but an actual leader who may turn the tide on the invasion. Overall, he is a very well done character, with plenty of flaws he steadily overcomes, lots of internal monologues to deepen him, and he is generally likable.

The side-cast is also strong, with a number of returning character with strong personalities. Unfortunately this is the part where the story falters a little, as it once again falls into the classic writing-trap, where there are so many characters introduced, re-introduced, juggled, discarded, and played with that it becomes hard to keep track of them (especially if you leave the story for a couple of months and come back once there is enough TLd chapters piled up).

Plot:

The main plot is mainly about the MC's growth as a person and fighter, with the occasional slice-of-life downtime between larger arcs. Be warned that there is a large hitch between the introductory arc in the Neutral Zone and exploring the actual world outside, with a lot of the early characters put on a bus some of the early rules discarded, but once you pass the speed-bump, the quality picks up again rather quickly.

There is also the larger, over-arching plot about the war between the original inhabitants of the world, the Federation of a bunch of fantasy creatures (who are the initial invaders) and the Parasites (a race of hive-minded bugs who are the main invaders), but since its scale is too big, the MC only tangentially interacts with it for a good while.

It's also worth noting that, while fights are short and visceral, they also present the novel's only objective flaw in the form of the MC's plot armor, where he would receive sudden power ups or new skills when the author writes him into a corner.

Final verdict:

This is a really well-written, entertaining story with generally good pacing, an interesting world, main character, and premise. A few small gripes notwithstanding, it is easily one of the best translated webnovels out there, period. It is, at its core, a deconstruction and then reconstruction of the heroic fantasy genre in an isekai, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone who are even remotely intrigued by that. Be warned though; this novel doesn't pull its punches, and important characters die over the course of it. If you are sensitive to that kind of thing, you might want to read it with a bit of caution. <<less

Very well written and very well translated, for the most part characters are believable and well fleshed out.

Only problems are the MC and his asspull plot armor bullsh*t and his denseness. It's to the level that I sometimes wonder whether I'm reading a japanese novel.

Spoiler

As some others have noted there's at times a huge disconnect between what we've been told about the MC's past and how he acts in the present. He goes from supposedly being a scumbag who borrowed a sh*t ton of money from his family and lost it all gambling and then continuing to beg them for money to an innocent child (As in he literally acts like he's 3 years old). I'm hoping this is temporary and the story will pick up but I guess I'll see.

Best novel I’ve read. Ever. Usually the MC will only gradually improve his strength and ability, but SCOG also polish his mentality and characteristic throughout the story. Makes it one of the most lovable character. The amount of time used for each arc is not too short or too long, just perfect. The story telling is excellent, also many emotions you could get throughout the series.

Highly recommend reading this, it is the best novel I've found in this site and I was proud that I stumbled upon this with zero recommendation.

I am happy with how this novel utilized just the right amount of gaming tropes & features. It also has a bit of wuxia trope which I am not that fond of — eating rare food that helps in growth — but it was properly planned and executed, and did not give 'over the top' power-ups.

Seol's slow character development from tr*sh to dependable to a... more>> leading figure is inspiring but done in a realistic approach, albeit the rough start. The action is well-written and very addictive. Overall, the story is pretty grounded and sensible. The setting is mostly in the other world Lost Paradise so I think Earth scenes will be limited to when focusing on healing Seol's relationship with his family. And I think that's enough.

The supporting/minor characters are also well-developed, serves their purpose (big and small) for the story, are interesting and have their own charm.

My issue is MC being a bit PG but only in terms of sensual stuff, which seems a little off with respect to the atmosphere of the story. In line with that, the romance aspect is not that much explored yet. Anyway, otherwise, Seol is R18 alright, as this story and most characters generally is, and I like that very much. There is however also the fact that he's still too secretive about his innate ability at half-way point of this novel, and not very keen on using it at every opportunity. There is a history of him losing that ability by overusing it, but I hope this weird habit will get explored better in future chapters.

My Synopsis: Seol dies in Paradise with overwhelming regrets of how he spent his time there. Before dying, he can only wish to Goddess Gula to have his emotions sent back, via a dream, to a time in the past before he entered Paradise, when he was still a gambling addict in Earth. Using this dream as a rough guide and his innate ability to see 'safe things' that emit a greenish glow — the ability he overused and lost as a gambler — Seol attempts a second run to try to save Paradise from the Parasites. This is the second coming of the son of Gula. <<less

Definitely my favorite novel I've read on this site, so much that I binged all the chapters within 5 days. It has a unique class system that balances out the importance of each class. It has quite the emotional scenes from the main character in regards to him trying to mend the bonds he had broken when he was a huge douche, also the MC is step by step developing himself to be good leader and a king with the help of his comrades and it is honestly satisfying. The... more>> characters are so memorable that I even remember most of the names of the important ones even the characters that mostly show up on the first 1-40 chapters. Has a decent power system in which the MC wouldn't immediately wipe the floor with any enemy he comes across (just like other sent back in time series that basically sucks out all the tension from the battles), in here he is acknowledged to be more powerful than the average earthling but not enough to overpower experienced high rankers. Has quite a decent main villain which is the parasite queen
Spoiler

she basically knows when an enemy with the potential to become strong is becoming more renowned so she employs several methods to deal with them earlier unlike other villains which are way too confident

[collapse]
. Though I could say this is my favorite novel, it has it's flaws which basically boils down to his use of his innate abilities and his interaction with women

Spoiler

Seol the main character has this side in which he is really childish, him pulling pranks on others is acceptable even though it feels like goes too far at times but he later develops this weird complex in which he hugs some women when he sleeps and honestly we can do without this. There is also this recurring gag in which someone basically talks to him implying to set him up with one of the female characters of the story but he always chose to ignore it or seem like he didn't hear it. What's more he should have really noticed the feelings of some of the females in the story considering one is basically waiting for a chance to reverse r*pe him, I could think that he is rejecting the advances because he still has feelings for his ex-girlfriend but the way it looks, that isn't the reason and more because he is afraid of relationships

Another thing to point out is that the activation of his "future vision" is vague and we don't exactly know what triggers it, granted that I like every scene every time it triggers since his character changes and we don't see the MC as I've just describe above.

I could also point out about him sometimes forgetting to use his "Nine eyes" at times just as pointed by other readers but then I realized that every time he used it, he gets distracted for a bit and ends up thinking about what he sees using it and forget other stuff so it seems he only ever uses it constantly if he would mostly depend on it when making decisions just like when he got left behind in the parasite's territory. Not to mention he is trying to keep "Nine eyes" a secret so if he ends up always reading other people's status every time he meets someone he would need a few seconds to actually read all of them which feels a bit suspicious

PedoBear Version 2.0
Regarding the top review with 1 star

Here are some important stuff that you should remember:

  • Earthlings view Paradise as a game
  • Earthlings won't die on earth when they die in paradise
  • The situation in Paradise was actually the worse, they were fighting a losing war.
  • There are three main faction, The beastmen Alliance with the World Tree as their greatest backer and spirits, The Humans and Earthlings with the Seven Gods, and the Parasite with the Parasite Queen.

  • Altought both the earthling and the beastmen alliances have one true enemy which is the Parasites, they arent actually in the same team for certain reasons...
Regarding the usefulness of the Gods, first, the remaining Gods that was fighting back are just some minor gods, they arent really incharge of paradise, heck they were even named... more>> on the Seven Deadly Sins (Gluttony, Wrath, Lust, etc) so they barely have any followers, they would perish without that other faction against the parasites...

Inhuman treatment to earthings? First, they wont really die on earth when they die on paradise and even their memories would be erased regarding what happens in that place so screw the human rights, Second, they dont actually treat everyone as junk and disposable, if you have a talent and good/rare job, you wont become a s*ave, you can have a good income and countless great offer.

But if you were deemed as useless with no future, they wouldn't hesitate to use you as a meatshield and disposable troop. It's simple, Paradise is a warzone and if you dont have any use, you are no different from a baggage, its even better for you to simply die and just forget about paradise than be a burden.

The lack of entertainment?

Here's the thing, imagine being invited to test a virtual reality game where you could pretty much do anythung you want as long as you try to beat the main quest? Do you think earthling would properly do the main quest to finish the game?

Some maybe, but most people would simply not, especially when they didnt have the capabilities to do so in the first place, if you can't finish the main quest?

You would have fun, forget your morals or dignity, its just a game afterall,

it wouldn't affect your life in earth, if you want to drown yourself to lust? Its just a game so go, you want to do drugs?fighting life or death battle one after another?

Its just a game,

its not real so feel free to do so. Thats the point, <<less

Pretty good, it kinda starts out like a slow burn almost gave up reading it until the part where he deals with an antagonist in the tutorial. I saw glimpses of righteous hate-filled brutality and I kept reading and so far do not regret reading it (one chapter is incredibly satisfying I still read it to get giddy) . It improves alot as I read on there were alot of times I laughed, cringed, hated a character/s and wished them death and dripped tiny tears.

I usually hate harems. But so... more>> far I dont really see it happening. But at 206 with so many future fleshlights you will truly notice characters being inconveniently forgotten like alot of situations where they are "around" but somehow doesnt interact with a situation they CLEARLY could have done with their characteristics/skills/power like they were a mirage, shame though they were built up really interesting but thats typical of harem books (more like the standard really bleah) . If there are some other critiques though is that there are many times I feel like the author actually forgot some details like his eye power not being used in situations he should have, could have normally. Hmmm I see a pattern no? Well anyways despite those negatives its pretty good so far. <<less

I wouldnt give this novel 5 star as the high rating suggest, simply this novel plot armor got so high that MC solves almost every arc with it. For now, i'll stop as im extremely feed up with it.

Story about tr*sh man who addicted to gamble get lost everything and decide to join another world to start a new life. Character development happen with MC truly good, as MC shifted personality bit a bit every he comes back to earth. The reality setting that author set realistic enough arround MC... more>> and his family, and I can related that.

Character, welp we got ton of them there, and most of it play good part of MC growth as human being. There's real character got killed moment, and actually happen on some that I thought gonna survive to the end.

Plot, its quite bizarre with realistic thinking (god actually helping their world resident by isekai'ed people from earth? Lol). If you are not think about that though, you might be enjoy this novel. Earth people got contracted to another world to fight back against alien creature, and actually okay to die in that world except you will forget everything. Its just like isekai mixed with VR genre but one life challenge.

Now, when I did said in my beginnning about plot armor solves everything, yes it did. MC actually survives numerous occasionally 100% gonna be goner moment, and guess what.. He's still kick living even after destroying his body in war against seven virtue. He's also somehow survive more than weeks chased by parasite in their camp without supplies, and etc. It was fine for beginning, but I got tired of this cliche after repeated happened until chapter 200. I just hope somehow MC actually solves thing with his power once, not almost always relies with plot armor.

Overall, it was fine novel. The world building is okay, and I did enjoy this. Its my only preference I just cant 5/5 but might be majority people doesnt think much about it so the rating does make sense. <<less
