The Second Coming of Gluttony

“The son of god Gula has returned.”

I was lost in the world of gambling.

I turned my back on my family and even betrayed my lover.

I wasted every day of my life.

It was a life of tr*sh.

The reality told me thus:

That I would amount to nothing no matter what I did.

In order to change my pathetic life, I chose fantasy, instead.

Even then, it was the same story.

I wondered if salvation would come at the end of the long road.

But, I was forced to kneel down in defeat in front of a powerful entity.

The tower I built up with my own hands crumbled into nothingness.

Just for once, I dearly wished to know the truth about myself.

“Come closer, my child…”

I will not hold back this time.

The best web novel, KR/JP/Otherwise, that I have read by far. Contains realistic human behavior, genuine character growth/redemption, and tons of action. Main character is strong but not ass pull sudden unexplained power up strong, and it feels like every character has their own distinct motivations and personalities. There aren't that many chapters out, but each chapter is basically 2 or 3 times as big as usual web novel chapters. Definitely read this one!

This is beyond overrated and in no universe does it deserve a rating as high as overlord or dungeon defense. The writing and story telling is good but everything else is mediocre at best. The world is never really explained, all we know is that it has a fallen empire, a federation and 7 city-states that call themselves kingdoms. No map or geographical description of any of them.

The gods might just be the worst in any novel I've read. There is no meaning for them to exist, it would have... more>> been much better to have a emotionless system than these worthless existences who don't have any power and only perform the role of an exchange system with unnecessary dialogue. They summon earthlings to save their planet yet have no control over them. The earthlings go around raping and mu*dering the local humans while completely ravaging their surroundings and even defecting to the world's enemy, yet the gods are unable to do sh*t about it. The fact that the old pantheon which was led by the strongest deity who ruled over the strongest Empire on that planet actually got crushed and devoured by a weakened invading god who had been destroyed and forced run with her tail between her legs by the protagonist from the author's other novel is just hilarious.

The protagonist himself seems to be an awful amalgamation of JP and CN beta male. His OP ability is scarcely used and he is conveniently unable to view the status screens of important people because of something cryptic like divine power jamming it. His personality is absolutely awful and it's incredibly painful to read his interaction with any female character. The ending of his harem is perhaps the worst and laziest piece of writing I have ever read.
Spoiler

He apparently ends up with the woman who was with him the entire time and supported him when he needed someone the most. He even goes on to have daughter with and it's all a happy ending. Wrong! This op god among men apparently has a convenient alcohol weakness, so all the women interested in him proced tho get him drunk and r*pe him, at which point he is forced to "take responsibility" and accepting them as his wives.

My current Favorite novel, contains very realistic behaviors to the point where sometimes you feel like the author went through the same situations... The characters development are very fluid and makes sense, and whenever I start questioning things by finding loopholes I find the answers in the next chapter immediately like the author is listening to my thoughts. Ultimately I am very awe-struck by how amazing this author is, he makes your brain wander to places but the author decides the destination of those thoughts. The quality of this novel... more>> is insanely hard to maintain I hope he doesn't deviate from his current path. Oh and finally the translator of this novel deserves a kiss on the mouth, truly outstanding work from my perspective. <<less

This is a brilliant novel. It's a true emotional rollercoaster. You feel the main character's struggles, his doubts, and you really sympathize with him, as well as the ones who don't forgive him. The action is fantastic as well, and the adventure is only getting started. 10/10 would recommend.

This is soooo gooood!!!!!

I hope this gets picked up again soon by a good translator course this instantly became one of my personal favorite novels in the genre. Its especially a cool take on the "second chance" troupe.

From me and many others, this is a 5/5 novel. I will guarantee that you will absolutely love this web novel if what you are looking for is a good story with characters that feel real. Over time without yourself even realizing it you find yourself invested, I promise. The sad thing is... more>> that the novel is currently dropped at chapter 56 due to it now getting enough readers and the translator not having enough time as well. I would never have picked this novel if not for its high rating, and when I read the synopsis I was still skeptical, that changed by chapter 15-20 though. The author os this novel is honestly quite good at making characters who feel real and aren't completely s*upid as well. This novel specifically though? It's really really really really really good. I recommend reading the other reviews for a better understanding as a whole. <<less

I don’t know how I even randomly stumble upon this novel but 10/10 no regret will do it again.

The arcs in this novel are really well written and they vary from one another, so much that it keeps you hooked. The author is really good at creating tension in the arc, in the latest translated arc, there were not that much physical fight or whatsoever but man... I got to say it’s one of the best one I had ever read from a web novel. Just from describing things and... more>> atmosphere he managed to make me gulped nervously many times.

The world building is also fun and I like how the author gives tidbits about the world in a sporadic manner, every information making you even more curious about the social and political situation in their world. Every new information made me go, wait a minute and scroll back to re read earlier chapter and once you did that things seems to click more but that’s only a small tiny piece of the puzzle on a gigantic puzzle board.

Hnggggghhhhhh I need more chapters!!! <<less

I tried to like this novel, I really did but I just can't. The story has a very nice concept about going to another world via invitation or contract much like labour (and service) export in real life. The main character is also a breath of fresh air for he's a VERY flawed individual.... that is until you read past the first 10 chapter. The story starts by telling the circumstance of the MC: He's an alcoholic, Gamble-addict piece of sh*t that lost his esper ability therefore he's now buried... more>> in debt and selling out his own family and loved ones... until the next chapter where he turns a complete 180° and become one of the most bland, uninspiring cliché character that can stand toes to toes with the Japan Isekai MCs. He's now super righteous, Naive, Morally perfect and just being the second coming of Jesus. At this point I should tell you that this is a grown-ass 26 years old man and yet every time he open his mouth he talks like an 14 years old japan isekai MC. The side casts is forgettable and can be remembered by their tropes most of the time. With every time there is a conversation between them and the MC it just feels so awkward and unnatural. And there isn't much point for them to existing cause the MC is perfect anyway.

The story just feels like it's going nowhere and any characters developments is being delayed or thrown out of the window because the author just forgets about them or doesn't know how to advance the relationship further
Spoiler

The people that MC survived with in the "Trial" and "the safe zone" is vividly mentioned in the future chapter or become a faint existence in his "Harem"

[collapse]
For some reason the author really likes to keep the MC "pure" even though he's making the world he's in very "dark and gritty". For example:
Spoiler

When he got out of "the Safe Zone the first scene we read is the MC sharing a wagon with 3 people and the girl he's with is becoming a prostitute and sucks another guys off as it's the norm with the remaining guy saying "welcome to Paradise" and yet in the further chapter he has to survive in the middle of a wasteland with a Princess. Now they have to drink each other piss and hugging each other naked when the night came. But when they found an oasis he's blushed after seeing her taking a bath, like.. bro you drank each other piss and you still feels ashamed around her?"and the previous scene is he saving people that has been turned into a breed machine by the monsters so he has to killed them off even though one of his mentor was captured.

[collapse]

The contrast between the slice of life moments and the "serious" moments is so large that it's better off becoming 2 different novels <<less

Absolutely fantastic read, but I just wish the release date was faster because I'm addicted. They do a good job though since the chapters are usually about 3 times the length of other novels. It seems to be coming out much more frequently and I will have to look into supporting the translator. =)

This novel exceeded all my expectations. During fighting and dangerous scenes, I felt like I was watching a horror movie. Emotional scenes brought tears to my eyes. The interactions between characters felt so realistic and enjoyable to read. MC felt like a real human being who makes mistakes, reflect on his mistakes, feels every emotion, the mental struggle to make correct decisions. The Character growth is done incredibly well. Other characters are also fleshed out, feels realistic and has distinct personalities.

The world building is divided into 3 parts so far... more>> tutorial, real world, fantasy world. Every single of that world was enjoyable to read which is rare as normally I always prefer one thing to another. Even the adventure parts where MC learns new things was something I was able to savor with relish. It was quite unique. It almost felt like I could never get bored from this novel no matter what happens. The start prologue - 2 chapters might be hard to get into but after that, you will find yourself getting immersed into the novel world, well starting any new novel is always hard for me so maybe it's just me.

The chapter length is 2x-3x big compared to other Korean novels. So don't look at 64 chapters and think it is a low number. It actually has enough story progress that will be a very enjoyable experience. <<less

Story seems planned out to be an OP MC fighting and winning against the dark forces with his co-star harem and one dimensional side characters.

I will acknowledge that the beginning 14 or so chapters introduced a well-used premise in an interesting new way, but the story's development is clearly straying from that original path.

This could be the fault of the translator, but all the characters ignore the character traits they were introduced with and revert to a happy-go-lucky personality around the MC. It's very difficult for me to engage with... more>> the struggles of those around the MC when their very real struggles disappear like smoke thanks to the help of the omnipotent MC who also has his own flaws completely fixed by chapter 38 and thus becomes a very generic MC.

If you've never read a story regarding an OP MC with a harem before, then you may find this story interesting and I encourage you to experience this genre while it is still a new experience. If you've tired of this genre already then I would advise you to stop reading this comment and look for another novel. <<less

In the bottom of this review I recommend 4 web novels all of which are examples of how overrated this story truly is. All 4 recommendations are better than this in almost every way. If this review is too much writing, and you don't want to waste time reading all of it, I think you should at least check the bottom for the 4 novels I mention. I'm almost certain you wont regret it.

TL:DR - The negative: The MC is a typical example of a Gary Stu, with an OP... more>> ability that is kept a secret for no reason other than to force the plot, and gets saved by convenient use of plot amour every time something happens. 90% of the side characters are boring, lacks personality, and are just dolls for the MC to surprise by how perfect and awesome he is.

There's no humour in the story, there's no feels, and everybody except the MC doesn't know how to use their brain for simple deductive reasoning, logical conclusions, planning, and having a skeptical viewpoint.

None of the side characters gets explored in any way, which is very sad and awful use of characterization. We learn absolutely nothing about anybody except the MC's backstory, feelings, morales, goals, dreams or anything at all. Even something like alternate POV's of some of the recurring characters would've gone a long way. But no...

The positive: I like the world and the world building, the leveling system, and a few of the side characters are interesting.

The actual review is below:

HIGHLY overrated story like most crappy xian xia/wuxia/asian fantasy stories tend to be. And here's why:

  1. Full of wish fulfillment, a ridiculously OP gary stu MC that is much stronger than his level, and who keeps surprising everyone he meets. Which gets old VERY quickly. He also has an "innate" ability that makes EVERYTHING a cake walk; because he can just look at something, and then he knows his chance of survival. Just like difficulty ratings in a video game. And he keeps said ability a secret without any plausible reason, which so far has done nothing but create problems, and make scenarios that could've easily been avoided, prevented or at least reduced them to a minor fall out/inconvenience.
  2. A bunch of boring and 1-2 dimensional side characters, with only a few that has any engaging personalities at all. I do admit that some of said side characters are interesting, but we learn absolutely nothing about their feelings, thoughts, agenda's, or history. And I do mean nothing. Which is a very sad loss of potential tbh.
  3. The author keeps giving the MC plot armour every time he's in trouble. Every single time up till now his future ability pulls his ass out of the fire or something else does, and he basically never uses his 'own' abilities/effort for anything critical. I HATE the prevalence of plot amour abuse that every damn korean/chinese fantasy author keeps abusing. It's plainly bad writing.
  4. Everybody except the MC seems to lack even basic deductive reasoning skills, ability to plan, being critical and asking questions that matter.
  5. Feelings of the MC and others are incredibly poorly written. I haven't even once felt anything for anyone in the story. Also; a lot of banter between characters feels unnatural and doesn't flow in a natural way.
I have a hard time seeing how this story has gotten such ridiculously high ratings. It is IMO entirely undeserved, and I can recommend at least 4 novels, all of which are many times better in almost every single way compared this.

And I actually think I will:

  • A Practical Guide to Evil (this story is a must read for any fantasy fan, it is simply amazingly well written and I could go on and on about the why and the how, but I won't since it would take too long. I WILL say that this is my absolute favorite web novel, and I HIGHLY recommend it)
  • The New world (possibly the best LitRPG I've read, and is a perfect example of how to write an OP character in a natural and believable way, also the world building is quite decent too) on Royalroad written by Monsoon117
  • The Act's of Androkles on Royalroad, written by Ryan English (now THIS, this is how you write a story with feels, and no it's not a tragedy or anything like it)
  • Not All Heroes (Superhero/antihero story in a grim dark setting, very well written, and a perfect example of how to write about a MC with a clairvoyant ability, that is actually interesting. Without being a gary stu/mary sue, OP-deus-ex-plot-amour-ridden-snooze-fest-machina of a character. Which is the opposite of The second coming of gluttony's MC)

like most novels of this genre, it started off great, with interesting plot/twist to the isekai genre and somewhat interesting MC.
But soon like aways it turned to sh*t. I'm angered by the lack of effort put into this by the author. This could have been such a nice novel but ruined by the lazy writing and reliance on the over-the-top and overused japanese isekai stereotypes.
Basically the MC who is 26 btw and had a few relationships starts acting like a fking clueless 14 years old, dense (for the... more>> PLOT), s*upid, righteous MC who has the luck of 10 jap mc's combined.
"Oh this task is impossible for even lvl 4. See how I do it with my WILLPOWER alone at lvl 2". Such bullsh*t can be seen throughout the series.
The perfect way to describe this novel and MC is using a meme I remembered. Basically, there's a video out there of Drake (the pop star) cutting a cake. Now, he has some 20ish people around him and they start licking his a$$ and starting behaving like he built the fking time-machine and didn't just simply cut a cake. Thats basically the whole cast and MC interaction.
I started reading this cuz of the high rating but I can't take it anymore. This 'novel' is not that 'bad', considering it's a webnovel. But it should somewhere around 3.5-3.8 and not freaking 4.7 <<less

Tl;dr Well-thought out, very deep MC, I've had to rapidly blink in public to keep from crying at times.

There is an interesting dynamic where the MC is considered tr*sh on Earth and as a rising star in Paradise, the alternate world. The MC isn't tr*sh because he's unlucky or something gimmicky, but because of his own choices. He used to be a kind, great dude, and ruined everything by developing a gambling addiction. At the beginning of the series we see him at his lowest, acting like an absolute bastard.... more>> He's the kind of person you might think the world might be better off without, someone who has fallen too far for redemption.

That's the thing: the author takes this character and has CRAZY CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. If anything else, I think this novel teaches us the valuable lesson that even the most depraved people are people, can feel remorse, and can be redeemed. <<less

The story is decent with a few major flaws. The biggest flaws I noticed are the protagonist's terrible dialogue, the weird sounds he likes to make (If you read any novel that feature goblins and orcs in the main cast, the protag has the same intelligence and is as emotive as the side characters) and his personality change. I don't know if its the author or translator, but one of them is trying to make the MC sound autistic as possible.

The world-building and RPG elements are done wonderfully but the... more>> situational failer on characterization really kills the flow of this novel. One second you will think that he's a genius then next ask yourself if he's just transformed into an idiot. This wouldn't be so bad if it was just one person, but this slowly rubs off on to the core side characters.

The above reasons are a turnoff but something I can still cope with. What really killed this novel is the personality change of the protagonist was too abrupt and unrealistic. Yes, he was a POS at first but he was a real POS. Turning from a flawed character into some kind of overly polite cartoon character is what threw me off. It was disappointing that the author decided to change him the way he did instead of being more gradual about it. <<less

More like the second coming of absolute tr*sh. This novel's rating is artificially inflated and the one's who give this 5 stars either have no taste or follow the herd mentality.

The MC? Generic wimp. His persona doesn't fit someone who's supposed to be a long time gambling addict.

The world building? Illogical. The gods, the dumb points system, literally everything about this world is s*upid and doesn't make any sense. Why kill off people before preparing them? Why limit mission availability if the goal is to prepare them for the real... more>> thing? A complete waste of resources. What's up with the ridiculous points system and shops that have literally any item imaginable but at limited quantities so MC can conveniently abuse the system and him alone. Sh*t writing right there.

Side characters? All of them one dimensional, incompetent and generally useless. They act like carton cutouts. Author has no understanding of basic human interaction.

The story? Absolute tr*sh. Author employs too much telling instead of showing what happens. All the interesting content is skipped over with retellings of what happened. Or if something finally happens, the descriptions do a bad job of visualising it.

All in all this is another generic isekai tr*sh with no redeeming qualities. Literally none. <<less

Whoa!!! What an overated novel

The story itself prety much good, but have many flaw that trully drop the quality, and first and foremost the MC.

Most humane MC??? Unique Personality?? Are u sure? Cause I don't think so. At First!! MC have coward, bastard, manipulative, will do anything to achieve his goal, when suddenly, just only One Night, all of his bad personality GONE... just gone, not even a tiny bit left...... that happen After he receive a dream/memory (that become fuzzy after he woke up) from his past-future self.... that... more>> actually have a freakin' demon-like MC quality!!!

Woaa``~ And To be Reborn as a crybaby, Beta-Japanese-MC!!! (Indecisive, Innocent, Naive, Dense, High Luck, Natural Debuff to Enemy Brain, Have Harem that Hellbent to rape Love Him, s*upid when Utilizing His Own Ability).

A twisted Romance, like how he brainwashed by his ex-GF
Spoiler

become one of his hife, he will have 8 wifey and some child too later ofc

[collapse]

Ally?? Strong Ally?? Even the so-called LV.8 nerved when she close to the MC, while the enemy Buffed (in power) but Debuff (in intelligence), yup ally become almost useless and enemy become muscle brain.
The Seven Gods themself have no meaning to exist except for level-up, consoling patient, and throwing some idiotic puzzle. They not have power to aide humanity, only some-lowly-blessing and some kind of item (that too need to be bought with cash). And I not found weird when many defecting to enemy side.

Villain have too much talk, especially the mob. Damm!! They very smart when talk but become dumbass when do something. And we have A Very OP Main Villain... The Parasite Queen
Spoiler

she a fallen gods that because of plot armor can devour a leader deity of a world, she can read Fate, produce unlimited Enemy, powerful blessing, Strong Ally, Human Brain, Wide teritority

[collapse]
... but, All of that become useless in front of our Beta-MC, she hit a very hard FireWall that she become brain-dead. That Because she is to powerful for Our MC, so Plot Armor become her enemy instead. Such a bad luck.

Battle scenes are good, but become useless if again, PA in use, bc MC always fight enemy that literary he hopeless to win.
Like---
Spoiler

when he first fight in a major war, the situation already hopeless at that time, and?? Just like I guess, he gain a sudden power up and become chuck norris, and after that?? Ofc he will fall to COMA (bc chuck norris power are too great)...... And the situation repeat when he go to save the world tree, he fights another hopeless fights then... He DIED, And ofc he revived by PA

[collapse]
MC struggle?? Ofc but not that important cause, when needen he will upped without limit. It just kind annoying for that above happen more than once, if author wants strong MC just make it, not using some kind lowly-sudden-strenght-gain plot.

Want BADASS MC?? GO AWAY!!!

Want Beta-MC?? This is for U then. <<less

The Second Coming of Gluttony is about a gambling addict that through a fated encounter, obtained a chance to redeem himself and fulfill the hopes of his past life.

The first arc of the story (the tutorial) was interesting and enjoyable to read. However, it quickly spiraled into the usual mess of things. The plot became very stale and generic overtime, and the characters are either very 1-dimensional or portrayed in a rather unrealistic manner.

The main character appears to have a mental age of a 14 year old child even though... more>> he is supposed to be 26. I guess the characters of a novel can only be as intelligent as the author himself. Overall, this novel seems to possess all of the ideal characteristics of a typical tr*shy isekai novel. <<less

I was never actually going to read this since the synopsis didn't appeal to me at all, and it seemed as if it would be very boring with that synopsis, you know?

But I saw the reviews and thought, what's with this insanely high ratio of 5 stars? So I decided to read it at 11 PM. Now, it's 4:58 AM and my eyes hurt from the crying and the light mode. (But don't mind that)

First. The world is interesting. I gotta say that, because I really care about the... more>> premise when it comes to WNs, and no one seemed to be mentioning that in reviews, which was a reason why I was hesitant to read it. It's kind of hard to explain, but seriously. It's a little like the Tutorial is too Hard, or something. Anyways, seriously, read it and you'll understand.

Second. The characters. Well, the character development of the MC. He was an absolute scumbag before, and, well. Forgiveness won't come easily at all. I mean, he went back, and the contrast at the treatment of him from his family members to the insanely strong people, whew.

Fuuu, I seriously cried. I mean, the actions of them, just felt so realistic. One moment, I was, well, immersed in his character, enjoying the respect he had in the other world, and then, when he came back home, while I was still immersed, got this----

Seriously. It's friggin sad, but it felt like it could really happen to any of us, really. Like, he managed to make it very, deep (?) but not using very super extreme things, you know, all the cliche melodrama things. Not gonna spoil for you if you see this review.

Anyways. Just read it, this novel. If you're craving for something new, this is it. Also, I spent 16 minutes composing this, it is now 5:14. I hope someone read this review. <<less
