The Remaining Life Has Its Limits

She was an utterly ordinary woman.

From a family that favored sons over daughters, to a job with meager pay, and a husband who was taciturn.

She thought she would forever remain ordinary until one evening when her husband didn’t come to pick her up.

Misfortune struck suddenly, and she began to live in darkness, fearing that someone might say she attended a party that night or that someone might mention she wore a dress that night.

She feared her husband accusing her of infidelity and her family condemning her as immoral.

Until everything became unbearable, her typically silent husband sat on the couch, finished his last cigarette, and looked at her crying in the corner, utterly broken.

“What have you done wrong?” he asked.

Then he took her hand, called the police, hunted down the culprit, and appealed.

Using his remaining life and risking his life, he sought justice for her, sought fairness, and gave love.

The road is long, life has cliffs, but there is always an end to this despair.

[The story of a heroine who, after being hurt, stands up again with her husband’s support, facing her original family, facing herself, learning love and life.]

PS:

1. The heroine is not a perfect victim; she starts off weak but gradually grows stronger.

2. Dark beginning, healing ending, complete HE (Happy Ending), overall tone of “though thousands may oppose, I’ll go forward,” so it won’t be overly sweet or cheerful, but the ending won’t be stifling.

3. Several hundred thousand words, not your typical romance.

An excellent story, but I don't know if I recommend it. It's definitely not an easy read. I keep skipping bits. The actual r*pe description ('misfortune' in the description is a euphemism for full r*pe) is blunt but not too detailed. The description of the psychological and social aftermath is the brutal bit.

I like the way her family is portrayed. Not angels and not monsters, just people. A bit selfish, not very good at seeing the main characters perspective, but they do love her and want the best for her.

There... more>> are a few unrealistic coincidences, but not too bad. <<less

This story is very close to realism though there are certain novel elements to it. The portrayal of her parents and their thoughts echoes to the realities of our society.

I really liked the leads' relationship, , their transition and growth. I wish I could read more about their day to day simple life.

The story is an account of a girl who lost herself and succumbed to life' hurdles. She eventually learns to stand up for herself and lead the life she wanted. The story was inspirational without trying hard.

I loved... more>> the story and hoping to read more of author's other works. I hope they get fully translated soon. <<less

What a ride! Read it in one day! An engrossing read - that pushes all the buttons to make you mad at the injustices and feel every emotion of the characters. You get invested in it right from the plunge you take in the first chapter.

It hits you raw - and at the same time- you want to take notes at some life reflections. So wise. It will resonate well especially with Asians - whose family bonds (or binds I should say) are generally this complicated. That combined with the... more>> victim blaming you see in everyday news articles - hits you so hard. You seethe, you burn, you explode and you feel depressed while being unable to put it down. The author's writing is exactly that good - and the translator has done splendid justice to the original as evinced by the grip this story had on me.

I should have perhaps said at the beginning that I generally don't go for this genre of stories - I tend to avoid them as it is too realistic and I read novels to give me an escapism into fluff and romance territory. I saw the high rating and wanted to give this a chance and it held me on from the first chapter till the end in an enthralled emotional grip.

The story is so well crafted by the author that I want to hunt for her other stories - though not immediately (I can't take such a roller coaster emotional investment immediately)

That said - in between I was a bit skeptical for these (2) reasons - when I thought

Spoiler

1. Her husband was so amazing - well how unrealistic in real world - in this story of such realism.. Then comes the complexity and revealing of the layers of the husband's character and his reasoning. I was convinced. They are just lucky to have met each other. No fairy tale romance here. However this is so much more realistic but not any less beautiful.

2. The build up to the first trial was very convincing and if they had won it - it would not be too jarring based on the circumstances set out. However - at the back of my mind - I had these thoughts that real world victims don't get justice this way in the real world. And wow - that set back - (even though it made me mad) made the story so much more stronger.

This is how powerful this author's writing is.

Go on and read it. You won't regret it. <<less

This story is too real. Obviously a HUGE TW/CW for those who have experienced similar ab*se, but I took the chance myself anyway in spite of my own personal struggles and found this story to be incredibly cathartic (pain aside, of course).

A truly amazing piece of writing, and top-tier translation to boot. 5-star work on all fronts, no question about it. Thank you, author and translator!

I started reading because I was waiting too long for the drama. It's a well written suspense and all about character development, not just of Qin Nan and Ye Sibei but the whole Ye family. You know the criminal, you know that justice will be served but you don't know it will be proven.

What I liked is the journey of Qin Nan and Sibei, from being distant to knowing each other well and becoming a family.

My favourite character is obviously green forest man - Qin Nan.

I fell for his character... more>> when he told his friends "Yes, she did go to a drinking party and she did drink. So what? Is that wrong? Today we are here drinking together. If one of us gets hit and killed on the way home, whose fault is that? Should we blame him for drinking carelessly?"

At a certain point, I wanted him to stop but I knew he wouldn't and that it was a crucial part for development. Thankfully, he didn't face charges. I'm glad that we got one whole chapter just about his life journey, right from childhood to the present. <<less

I've read Mo Shu Bai's other works, but this one feels like her masterpiece—an all-time favorite that reaches right into the heart and holds tight. The emotions it stirs are raw and unfiltered, capturing an intimate journey through the bruised complexities of family and society's judgment of s*xual assault survivors with unflinching honesty. Each scene resonates with a universal truth that feels deeply personal, especially as an Asian woman, where family bonds are both our greatest solace and heaviest chains, and saving "face" often takes priority. This story feels painfully... more>> real, a reflection of life and societal pressures where victim-blaming lurks as a troubling norm.

This is a novel that pulls you under, forcing you to feel the heroine's anger, sorrow, despair, and quiet resilience as she faces both family and fate set against her. Her pain is visceral, her hope fragile, and yet she endures. You cry, you ache, you rage, yet you can't look away. The writing is simply beautiful, and the translator has captured it with such care that every line resonates deeply.

You know, love isn't merely a fairy tale filled with sparkles and sunshine. It's when the shadows creep in and storms gather that you see how your partner handles the tough times. That's when the true depth of their character shines through. Qin Nan, is a perfect example of this, proving to be one of the best ML I've encountered. He's not a perfect hero from the beginning, and their relationship isn't a storybook romance—it's real. But when life is difficult, he was her unshakeable rock and her anchor amid churning waves, always standing by her when no one else would. He didn't just save her—he empowered her, gave her the courage to break free from the restraints others had placed on her, and helped her reclaim the self she thought she'd lost.

This story doesn't just linger; it imprints itself, leaving you haunted and moved by its portrayal of resilience and love. It's a testament to the power of hope, even in the darkest places, and to the strength it takes to rise above, hand in hand with someone who truly believes in you.

May this type of love find me. <<less

I binged this in one night. Another one of Mo Shu Bai’ s masterpieces, very well written and fast paced leading to a dramatic climax. This was a commentary on our society and even though at many times I felt the FL was too weak, she was very relatable. The ML also was portrayed very well, with complex layers. Definitely a must read.

This is fast paced, very slice of life story. No extra fillers or drama. It's about a assault victim's journey from being submissive to seeking justice. From a very ordinary person she becomes a unique character because she had always had it inside her bones. She just needed some lift from her husband through encouragement, mental and economical support.

Very realistic and genuine human emotions and behavior displayed, which everyone can relate to.

Very subtle romance, almost non existent. But their love overall is very humble and sweet.
