Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

Lacking a pocket dimension, power, a thigh to hug onto, and the three life advantages (money, power, and looks), he had been cautiously living in the apocalypse for ten years, getting closer to falling inside the zombie’s mouths.

Unexpectedly, he had the terrible luck, to be caught in a fight between two gangs and die, it really left people feeling disappointed. When he opened his eyes, he had returned to a decade ago, three months before the apocalypse!

Like before he still lacked an ability, an ordinary person without a pocket dimension, but he did have ten full years of experience living in the apocalypse! Even if he didn’t fight zombies, didn’t hunt monsters, he could still live a carefree farming life in the safe zone.

Find a safe house, utilise all kinds of skills from his previous life to farm in exchange for meat, and if possible, find a person to peacefully spend the rest of his life with; ordinary people had their own ordinary little pieces of happiness.

Originally believing he had picked up a beauty he returned home to prepare a golden house, but on the contrary he was the one being pushed down……someone once said, whether it is people or matters, by no means can you only look at the surface!

It was fun in the beginning but after chapter 150 the plot disappeared. In the beginning it looked like there will be a goal to reach, plans for the futore, whatever. But the more I read the more it starts to remind me of that terribly long Us TV shows with tons of episodes but without one general plot. Things are happening, there's some action but nothing happens.

Characters were quite fun in the beginning. It's a fun thing to read but once you start feeling that it doesn't go anywhere... more>> stop reading because it won't. <<less

Started off great. I love it when they really prepare well for the apocalypse with their knowledge. But after the first 70 or so chapters it became boring and monotonous. The romance was meh.

It just amazes me that I only have a 3.5 score. The story has seemed excellent to me. The MC could be considered prodigy, but it is because of his experience. It isn't OP, simply because yes, it only uses its experience in its favor, and I like that. The relationship he has with the ML is one of the healthiest I've seen. The ML, which is quite OP, isn't too possessive (although it is, but respects MC), and relies on MC. I like the interaction that the group has... more>> in general. <<less

I read the raws, and it's a good story. It's no walking dead, but I'm not really into gratuitous horror where all the main characters die. There are a lot of cute moments and

a happy ending somewhat that I'm fine with since zombies and humans mathematically can't co-exist.

[collapse]

There are gory bits though of course and lots of op MC farming. Everything solves itself.

It's a very fluffy story and I love it!

Just that as much as how I appreciate the translator's effort; the translation just has a lot of mistakes in grammar & etc. Like for instance the word "some" is turned into "come", "not" into "no" and many more. Sometimes the sentences gets so confusing that I have to stop enjoying the story to dissect what it meant. An editor will easily fix this so I hope the translator finds a reliable editor soon, I would volunteer to be one but I'm... more>> not 100% sure of my grammar. <<less

Sure, there's romance and all. But mostly, this is about MC and friends living a heartwarming post-apocalyptic life. In a sense, it feels like those slow-paced Japanese transmigration novels where the MC is busy improving the standard of living instead of getting stronger. Apart from scavenging and zombie-hunting, they're always busy with some construction, farming, or food processing project.

Unfortunately, that did get old after a while especially since the plot forces them to rebuild twice. And perhaps the author felt that too, so the novel ended with a disappointing timeskip.

This is one of my favorite Apocalypse novels.

The author did an amazing job writing this Slice of Life novel.

... more>> I normally can't read a novel more than once, but I just may read this for the third time.

I love the students, the MC, and the ML. The characters were well-written.

Things in the novel I didn't like:

The constant emphasis on how unattractive the MC was and how self-conscious he was.

How little self-confidence the MC had throughout the story. Really sad.

The fact that in C-novels, they always assume the government or military will step in save them when in real life both have been known to be corrupt globally. Not saying there aren't good government officials and good military leadership, but the blind faith is a bit disturbing tbh.

Things that didn't make sense:

Thinking they would run out of clothes in the 21st century. We have a fast fashion problem, this is a non-issue.

Women are seen as less than men. This is a cultural thing, I see it in a lot of C-novels, it's still annoying though.

All the women selling themselves. I support hoes but come on, not everyone would choose that path.

Characters: 4/5

Plot: 5/5

Realism: 5/5

Originality: 5/5 <<less

4.5 Stars!

Overall

The beginning, when meeting with the neighbours and the ML made me a bit hesitant because I felt it was too fast. Because I just read the other zombie story by this author before this one. The previous story was very self vs others until like 3/4th of the way through while in this story the MC is open for a companion and other people right from the start. Anyway, I love it! It has all the things I love, heartwarming scenes with friends and family, amazing resource gathering,... more>> varied and distinct characters, and a MC that isn't dumb but instead is the meticulous planner and leader of the group, building a life they can thrive in an apocalyptic world. Eventually, there is a kid, then a baby, and then lots of adorable pets near the end! Unlike other zombie works, there is no magical space or golden finger, so everything is somewhat realistic, and wealth growth is smooth and believable. One thing to note is that there is no golden finger so the scale of growth is small! So whatever they do or whatever happens, it will have more weight on the lives of the MC and the team. This makes the story more enjoyable instead of no matter what happens, they will be fine anyway because of [insert golden finger here]. It's a slice of life, farming, resource gathering story with lots of zombie action haha. They level up quite smoothly too. It's only I really wish they didn't include the timeskips in the last couple of chapters. I would have loved to read about all the things they did before those points! Ahh, I already want to reread this!

Writing/Translation

The translation I read is from WhiteMoon x BlackSun. The translation is not as good as it could be. I felt that some details in the setting up/planning by the MC such as how the locations of the planting spaces were set up or how the space is organized were lost because of the translation. Mostly because I don't know if the words chosen for the place are correct. For example, "Plants grown on the terrace." From what I googled, "terrace" means floor to ceiling windows, how can plants be grown on them? If compared to the author's other work, that one was translated beautifully, I got all the nuance. But this one, not as much. Maybe 10% is lost? However, don't let that stop you! It's far more readable than MTL and the detail lost is regrettable but not a dealbreaker. You can get the gist of the space organisation more or less. Other than those, all the other happenings are very readable! I seriously enjoyed it haha. I also think the translator got more experienced later on.

Pacing

The pacing is pretty consistent throughout the entire story except for the last couple of chapters for some people. Before then, you can assume it's already a happy ending if you want actually. The last 2 chapters have a couple of longer time skips because they want to wrap it up.

Plot

We follow our MC strive to live the life he envied and dreamt of when he lived in the bas**ent for years in his previous life. To survive without as much hardship with a companion (a dog haha) to alleviate loneliness in a post apocalyptic world as an ordinary nosuper abilities person. We see him slowly gain companions on this dream along the way until this dream isn't feasible anymore and they have to make a big decision to rely on themselves in the outside world! That happens like 50+ chapters before the end of the story. A lot of the cool lifestyle design happens there haha.

Themes/What Story Tried to Achieve

This is a slice-of-life, farming, resource gathering and a mass fighting zombies for their nuclei type of story. It is super heartwarming halfway through when the team gets closer and feels like family later on. There is lots of delicious food and bonding through meals that happens. I also love all the thinking and planning that happens in a zombie infested world. How to obtain stuff without dying? I also love all the action! It really spices things up very nicely from all the calm, soothing farming scenes haha. The excitement and anticipation throughout the novel, XD. Man, I loved it! I also love how all the things they do feel like they have actual impact! This is because the scale is small, so any of the actions by the MC and the team has a lot of impact on their lives. Because the plants produced are small, they have weight. If there was a magical space, there would be hardly any weight because it would be too easy! The author's other zombie story was like that. There wasn't as much weight as here because the couple could just live in their space indefinitely if they needed to. Here, there is just enough weight that you really root for them! If something bad happens, you feel angry and a bit anxious, if there was an unexpected harvest during their missions, you feel excited for them! Ahh, how the scaling was done. Reading all this, I hope the author will write more stories like this! Wealth building, poor to rich style with close friends haha.

For the romance part, eh, I feel like it's just as a backdrop to the rest of the story. I don't feel the love. I just assume this is an MC ML love thing and move on to the other parts of the story that interest me.

Characters

I love the MC. He's actually a shou but a smart and capable one! He was lonely but a practical survivor. He is very good at planning and leading people. The ML is okay, I feel like he's an afterthought in terms of romance as in I don't feel much as a romantic lead. But he's a cool and strong ability user for the MC and the team in this apocalyptic world! I like him much more as that than the romantic lead lol. The side characters are good people that really help lighten up the atmosphere especially since they are so prominent in the story. I love their presence here. There is a group bond that creates the feels. The you are my people, so I will fight everyone else for you together with you haha. Love that. Then, there are the cute kids in the latter part of the story haha. As for the bad guys, well, this isn't a revenge or faceslapping story so the villains kinda fizzle out or have anticlimactic ends. Not really the focus of the story.

Why 0.5 Star was Deducted:

  • I'm still curious about some things that weren't explained. Maybe the author just didn't think it was important for the story. Eg,
    1. How the zombies came about, why they were travelling in groups, how were they coordinating like they had intelligence, were they being directed by a leader?
    2. What happened to the ML's father and the mother's lover in the end?
    3. What happened to Captain Guo in the end?
    4. Also, what exactly happened in the leadership shakeup?
  • I felt that the story could have been even longer with no issues.
    1. The last chapter timeskiped 3 years to a very interesting small bases alliance nearby that they sell things at the market (so interesting! Why didn't the author include these parts in the story?? So many potentially new and interesting characters!)
    2. I wanted to know the progression of the pairing up that happened within the team!
    3. I would have liked to read how the final nationwide battle 8 years later actually went XP.

As a story the author kind of dragged with so many chapters. It seems, a little bit, repetitive at some points regarding the surprises the characters stumble upon.

But the editing of the translator is more of an issue. Words are missing, tenses are incorrect and there are instances of characters mixing up.

This was incredibly boring and dull as f*ck and is 3 at best, if we're being generous.

However, it did serve as a good distraction for me so I will give it a 4.

You have to be in a very specific mood in order to enjoy this. There's very very sparse action and what little action is glossed over in walls of text. There's no character development or exploration of the human experience. There isn't even romance. World building is as bare as possible, and the whole thing is peppered with... more>> so much deus ex machina that the literature gods themselves must be tired from creating all that plot armor.

There is only thing this is good for: retaliating against bleak, materialistic real-life by fulfilling hoarding fantasies through this story. The characters get to enjoy free real estate, home farming, and building a well-equipped base with all the fancy stuff including a garage chock full of electric cars and huge trucks. This kind of wish fulfillment is the only thing good about the novel and also the reason why I still managed to finish it despite the awkward writing exacerbated by the awkward English/MTL.

I do commend White Moon's efforts though because if it were me, I would have fallen asleep before finishing the 1st chapter. And for the MTL naysayers, worry not. Even elite translators can't save this story. <<less

I finished reading it just now... It's a relaxing, well written and well translated novel. The romance is just secondary to the cooking and food management. There's practically no story, no character development, very little in terms of dialogues or world building's consistency... Somehow it works and it's readable when many other similar stories become overly boring this one works. It's not a masterpiece, but it's relaxing, predictable, and shooting.

This is my first review on NU. I've read a lot of chinese novels these past 3 years. Whenever I finished a book I specially liked, I always said to myself that I was gonna write a review later... but in the end I never did.

This book changed that, and as soon as I finished it, I felt that I had to review it right away. That's how much I loved it! I don't dare say this was the best chinese book I've ever read, but it's definitely one of... more>> the best. It arose so many different feelings in me. It wamed my heart to no end, but it also made me cry a lot: definitelly not of sadness, I can't explain.... but WOW how the ML experiences affected my emotions and made me shed bittersweet tears!

Spoiler

especially when some experiences he lived in his past life overlaped with his present and he realized how lucky he was to start again and to meet the ML with whom he could share his life and love. Yeah... I cried soo much at that part

[collapse]

The ML and MC were definitely a match made in heaven and what I love the most is that they hit it off almost from the beginning. Both characters are very OP, but nothing over exaggerated or not to be expected, since the ML has a lot of experience from his previous life and the ML has a pretty powerful and useful ability.

Spoiler

Tell me about a golden finger... It was to the point that if felt to me as if there was nothing he couldn't make (yeah the correct verb here is ''make" and not "do" ;) lol), which obviously made the lives of the main couple and their group of friends to be much easier than one would expect in their situation

[collapse]

MC has a really strong personality and a good head for strategizing, something that brings him respect even from powerful ability users. He's strong, level headed and really tough, but of course... only when he has to be... whenever he is interacting with the ML he becomes a sweety, and ooh God, the 2 of them together is so good!! They are different from most of the couples in other bl novels, they respect one another, support, protect and really really love each other, you can see their love almost jumping from the screen sometimes <3

ML is really powerful and reserved, he's a character who is tired of people pursuing him for his beauty or other hidden intentions, so for him the ML was really a fresh breath of air in his life.

Spoiler

he was actually the one who fell in love first and pursued the ML with little gestures, words and touches, causing the poor innocent virg*n ML to mistake it for brootherhod at first

[collapse]

The other characters in this novel are not just there to fill in the wholes like in many novels. They are all really fleshed out and relatable characters who were well written by the author. All of them, one way of another contributed greatly to the story and some of them left a deep impression in my heart, especially the male queen hahaha...

Spoiler

.... Zhang Yi, who was tsundere at first, but evolved into one of my favorite characters. His interactions with the MC were priceless and made me laugh a lot. Also, the interactions between him his 'husband' were really good

[collapse]

The children and the animals in this novel are also really nicely written and I simply loved all of them.

This story is definitely slice of life, as the people depicted were going on through every day just wanting to live their lives to the fullest and acting towards their dreams and hopes of a better life among chaos. They always gave their best no matter what. Sure, there was some gore and violence as can be expected in this kind of scenario, but in the end, the good stuff far exceeded the bad.

There were so many remarkable situations that are surely engraved in my heart and I have no doubt that I'll go back to reread many times.

I spent 8 days reading this book between my daily activities, and also used a lot of my suposed sleep hours to finish (got a few headaches in between because oh that kkkk), but when I aproached the end of the story I wished it woud never end, or that I could forget it and read it all over again. But all things, good or bad, always come to an end. In the end all that mattered to me was that it was one hell of an enjoyable ride and I recommend everyone to goo ahead and read it, you'll definitely not regret it.

Speaking a little about the translation... While I`m eternally grateful for the translator for picking up this amazing novel and recognize the work and time she must have put into this, I do have to point out the problems, especially in the first half. For example: someone's "niece" became a "prostitute" and other confusing things... but even so, it was not hard to read and became better towards the end. Well.. definitelly 1000 times better than the MTL version.

To end this review... did I say this was my first apocalypse novel? And.... I'm off to the next one! ;D <<less

It's basically Harvest Moon in apocalypse era.

It concentrate more on building a base, a lot lot lot of farming, animal care, child care, in nut shell, building a nest. Which is not bad, but get totally repetitive and boring for whole 258 chapters. And there's this unbelievably luck of their squad, so it has so little conflict and problem.

This story lacks: romance, action (despite apocalypse), character development, characters depth, and plot.

So it's just average overall. Quite nice but not excellent.

Overall I highly recommend this especially if you're into survival/farming types and the found family trope. This novel does a great job of involving those themes while also including some zombie action scenes.

Overall just keep in mind that this isn't a particularly dark novel and it does drag a bit in the middle part. But the relationship between the main cast of characters was really wholesome and I enjoyed that.

One of the best chinese bl novel I've read. It's on a whole another level compared to the stories listed here in NU.

  1. Not overly romanticized. Just imagine having a cliche romance in an apocalyptic world. Not realistic right? I love how the MC and MLs relationship is so balanced and so harmonious. Aside from the overly sweet stuff in the beginning, they really mellowed out to become like married couples together for a long time.
  2. Despite ML having powers and MC being reborn, they are not the super OP type. They just use their brains better and make smart decisions. Their survival is not based on "golden fingers" and "miracles" but rather through perseverance and practicality.
Such a good read.

Not gonna lie, I was sceptical when I first stumbled upon this story. It was when I read in the comments that likened this as something of a “Harvest Moon” type of story that sold it to me (as HM-anything usually does to me)

It really is like a Zombie apocalyptic Harvest Moon 😂

Spoiler

Though like any HM game, it’s a HE ending with a ‘it’s not the end but a new beginning’ feel. Truthfully I felt that the epilogue/ending could have been more elaborate of an ending but then that will lead to me just saying that ‘there’s room for a sequel’ which there is but now in the post-zombie apocalypse setting.

[collapse]

I lament over some inconclusive plot tangents that were left behind, as well as unexplained factors of the story that I wanted to know more about but weren’t really vital to the plot
Spoiler

like what’s the upper limit to ability levels, what’s with the ‘humans also have nuclei’ foreshadowing that went nowhere, what happened to characters like Dr. Xu, Lieutenant Ding, Captain Guo, Yan Fei’s dad, etc., and I’m also very curious how and why the zombie virus even began, and why mutant animals are immune but humans aren’t despite also being changed.

[collapse]

All in all though, this was probably the most chill zombie apocalypse story that I’ve read (so far) and probably one of the few that I actually like (since I tend to hate a majority of anything in the zombie apocalypse genre) <<less

I don't understand why some people are whining about things that are clearly pointed out in the tags.. it's a BL and is mostly about farming, the author didn't hide it, if you can't read, why are u here ?

Anyway, this is an amazing novel. The translation is a bit lacking sometimes but it's decent and I like the style.

This is not the usual rebirth before the apocalypse novel... I've been waiting to read this kind of novel since forever and I'm really satisfied.

When we read the usual zombie novel... more>> or watch zombie movies, it's always about action and combat and not about the everyday survival. This is a breath of fresh air.

It's not perfect but I'll give it 120/100 based on my enjoyement !! I really liked it <<less
