Sheng Xiyan was born again.

In the last life, she didn’t know until after her death, that she had been living in a novel.

The protagonist of the novel is her fiancé Yongning Hou Shizi and his true love and his white moonlight Zhao Yuanrou, who is her cousin. Zhao Yuanrou is a noble and talented transgressive female, whereas she is a cannon fodder who hinders their lifelong relationship.

In order to stay together for a lifetime, they met to jump into the lake and try dying in the name love.

They did not die, but moved the queen mother. The queen mother made the decision for them, to let his True Love be with him and so both of them married into the Yongning Hou Mansion on the same day, but she fell “seriously ill” before even seeing the husband’s face.

After a deep sadomasochistic relationship, the hero and heroine finally got together happily. In order to make way for them, Sheng Xiyan, who “dominated” the position of his wife, “died from illness” in the cold palace.

In this life, Sheng Xiyan was reborn on the day the hero and heroine eloped and died in love.

Faced with the fiance whose face was deeply protective of Zhao Yuanrou and the queen mother who was moved by true emotions, Sheng Xiyan chose to marry the eldest son of Zhenbei King Chu Yuanchen who had died on the battlefield.

Chu Yuanchen was a well-known and famous general in Dasheng, who had made great achievements in battle. In a battle with Beiyan, he defeated Beiyan and fled, but he himself was seriously injured and his whereabouts were unknown.

Sheng Xiyan became the eldest wife of the Zhenbei Palace instead of the Marquis Mansion.

I thought that this life could finally live comfortably, but I didn’t expect that the man who died early in the novel would actually come back to life!

Note: The heroine’s marriage in her previous life was ordered by her parents, in name only.

I wanted to rate this story 5 stars!! but I accidentally cl**ked 1 star 😭 (okay-- I've made a new 5-stars rating^^)

I really like this story. The romance starts very early, and when the FL & ML met, they both gave their best to give and receive trust from each other.

I'm fond of the ML's characters. He's a bloody military man, but he also has the charm of a prince (in his case, a feudal clan prince, not part of the imperial clan).

Spoiler

He's quite contradictory that I just can't imagine him being the emperor. Actually, I can't imagine all of the Chu family being the imperial family living in the imperial palace. They are just too warm and lovely 🥰

[collapse]

Now the FL... she's actually super cute. She woke up from the hellish nightmare of a life (or what is known as rebirth in the novel world), and all she wanted to do was to break out and separate herself from all the bad people who had (or will) hurt her.

From the synopsis, I thought she would be flustered when encountering the 'alive-but-rumored-as-dead' ML. Conversely, she was as cool as cucumber. So I was very happy that the FL is clever and calm.

But then... she was so kawai (!) when she became obedient and naive whenever the ML praised her (I joyfully cracked up whenever this happened. ML was so sly and funny). Thus I really enjoyed reading their interaction. There was no dilly dally in their romance. It's pure loyalty and trust from the start until the end.

Spoiler

It's intriguing to see the (hidden) battle between the smart (and foolish) ancient people and the arrogant transmigrator. FL was totally 'I-don't-care-about-you', but the transmigrator was conceited and vain, thinking that FL was always out to get her, and that everyone living in the feudal era is undeveloped and uncultured. She got what she deserved, looking down on people like that~

[collapse]

I also like reading about the political, military, and ancient drama in the story. What you think may not be what it actually is. Reading until the end will connect all the dots and plots~

Also, the side characters are rich and colourful, with their own interesting stories. They don't feel like they are side characters at all; because they have important roles in weaving the plot in achieving the HE^^

In short, this story has successfully gained my favouritism! 😊❤️ I wish there are more extra chapters though~ <<less

The male lead has a brother who's only 12.

Spoiler

His father (who I believe is also the male lead's father?) is pretty awful but it's in this sneaky hidden way and the younger brother is understandably attached to him. Their mother divorces their father, which is completely justified and he doesn't get treated half as bad as he deserves.

Basically, a couple things happen where the brother makes some bad decisions, acts like a normal 12 year old boy, and they leave him with the father's family. I think this is cold hearted and dumb, if they care about the boy. The father's family start poisoning him against them as soon as he's left and I just feel really disgusted by it. Especially since it seems they've decided that the little boy is a lost cause because he doesn't want to go to war and spill blood. It's really sickening.

I hope the little boy is given another chance, especially since similar novels redeem little tyrants who are much worse than him all the time. He's a sweet kid. He's just a bit spoiled and believes he's smarter than he actually is. I'm twice his age and I'm also afraid of going to a battlefield so I was sort of offended when the story acted like it was this huge moral failing of his.

If they give the younger brother a bad end or try to make him out as evil...I think they might since the FL saves the life of this soldier who she says killed the little boy in her first life. I thought it was strange that after that revelation, they story still treated this soldier as someone I should like.

[collapse]

Also, the romance between the FL and ML is sort of rushed? Like he goes from a little interested to completely soft for her at a break neck speed. I really like her but I have no idea why he (or his mom, but the mom's affection makes tons more sense since the FL seems to spend most of her time with his mom) are so head over heels for her. I'll take a break and then come back later. <<less

I enjoyed this novel and barely put it down even after finished it.

If you want to find the plot holes, there are plot holes in most of the novel, but the good story could make up for the plot holes and I could ignore it easily.

I noticed that the antagonist characters brought out comedy effects.

... more>> Basically, the MC’s rebirth changes many miserable fate of the other characters and obviously ML’s fate as well.

The romance is set up early but both of the MC have a long journey to get married.

I recommended this novel to CN novel readers. <<less

While this novel does some things well, it fails the most important missions of a novel. The ideas and the conflicts are all interesting, but as a work that the reader would want to read this is a complete failure. I can't ever recall being more lost in a novel, wondering where did people come from, or how did a scene happen. Despite excessive description you have the emperor popping out from nowhere, and just about all the other characters doing the same.

This could be a much better novel if... more>> about half of it was removed and what was left focused on telling the story. It's not though. <<less

I like this so much because it actually provided the details on how the main characters achieve their goals. Often, in historical novels that involves politics, the author only provides the female lead's perspective so that they wouldn't have to go onto detail about the intricacies of the scheming done by the ML. In here, the step-by-step execution of their plans were described well. The romance isn't rushed at all, in my opinion. It's fast romance, but it's reasonable if you consider their circumstances. The timeline of the novel spans... more>> only a few months so they are engaged for the most part and the marriage takes place late in the story.

The FMC is smart, good at assessing the situation, cute but at the same time does not let just anybody get close to her (emotionally). Meanwhile, the ML is smart, strong, jolly, maybe a little too perfect. The villains aren't annoyingly s*upid too. If you see things from the villains' perpectives, you'll actually understand their thought-process and why they react the way they do.

MC's rebirth brought upon a HUGE butterfly effect. So many injustices in their past life were given justice in this life. You can see the value of her rebirth without it being shoved into your face by the author.

There's also some character development, but it's mostly for the supporting characters, not for the MC and ML. See spoiler for who I think had the best character development.
Spoiler

MC's father started out as a scum. He's not emotional and always checks the pros and cons of things before acting. Thus, he will choose to neglect his child if this child does not bring him any benefit. That's how he used to be towards MC. Because MC wasn't bringing anything to the table (at first), he basically neglected her and let his wife (not MC'S mother - MC's mother is dead) to mismanage everything related to MC. This was the reason why MC was cold towards her father after rebirth. The father redeams himself SLOWLY throughout the story. At the end, you'll actually start to feel bad for him because even when he changed his ways, his children basically no longer need his warmth. He became a good father at the end, but his kids are still not as warm towards him.

[collapse]

Details about the 'fast' romance:
Spoiler
  • MC knew who her husband-to-be is before even meeting him, so when they finally meet, she already has a positive attitude towards him + ML IS HANDSOME. On ML's side, his first meeting with his fiance is a life-saving one. MC basically nursed him back to health + MC IS PRETTY. Of course, he'll also have a favorable impression of MC early in the story.
  • The story's setting is ancient china. In this time, you don't meet a person from the opposite s*x unless there's some banquet held to give these ladies and guys an opportunity to meet. The male that MC meets most often is ML who she knows is her fiance. The same goes with ML. They also almost always meet in secret which gives them a "world without outsiders." Of course, they'll easily get romantic feelings for each other.
  • ML's mother and sibling as well as MC's father and sibling are very supportive of their relationship. Supportive family = more opportunities to be together.

I only wrote this review in response to the person who said the the 12 yr old brother acted like a normal kid his age. I have to laugh. What?

Spoiler

His father almost killed both his mother and brother, he was told so, yet he stubbornly insists on not wanting his parents to separate to the point where he cut an axil on his mother's carriage to cause an accident and have it flip over. He could have seriously injured her or even killed her if his genius plan worked, all so his father could play saviour and they could have a chance to reconcile. He would rather help his father who attempted mu*der, twice, than stand by the side of people who truly care about him.

Also, he was given a choice. He made his. If he chose to go to the military the ML would have had people looking over him. His lack of faith in his family is telling, even if hes only 12. In the time period they live, 12 yr olds, especially male ones, shouldnt be so naive. The MC also has a brother his age and even he knows good and bad, who treats him well and who doesnt and the differences in attitude he should have between these people.

You also cant ignore the circumstances under which they live. Their entire family and those who depend on them are living on a wire. One wrong move, trust the wrong person and everyone falls to hell. (The novel the MC talks about clearly shows that they did fail to realise the truth and payed for it) This '12 yr old' is perfectly aware of this, yet he prefers to side with a father who's obviously already betrayed the family

[collapse]

Spoiler

Actually, I suspect this kid isnt even of the Chu family but was switched the abused little girl in the Jiang family.

This is a 4.5 for me.

I really recommend this if you like palace intrigues. I know that someone was complaining that the main couple got together too quickly, but I found the early romance refreshing. Most novels really drag it out. The CP has great chemistry. There was mutual attraction when they met, and the novel goes from there. FYI, the wedding doesn't take place till towards the end so don't think the relationship is rushed.

There's a couple places where you will have to suspend belief

like the MC acupuncture skills. I'm supposed to believe she's a genius because she read her grandpa's notes? With little to no training? Seriously?

[collapse]

The author is a good storyteller, and you won't be bored. All of these rebirth novels are pretty much the same, but this one is a cut above the rest.
Spoiler

In this one, the author pits a reborn person against a modern person that transmigrated.

I think this author is not really good at writing romance. Her Palace drama is more interesting than her attempts at romance. This book (just like her other book) has little romance. I had liked this author's other book "The Cannon Fodder and Villain’s Happy Ending". So I figured I might like this one too. However, I loved "The Cannon Fodder and Villain’s Happy Ending" loads better than this one. I did NOT like this book at all. "The Cannon Fodder and Villain’s Happy Ending" had this "brilliance" and "smartness"... more>> that was lacking in this story. I was looking for smart ways the leads would solve their problems, but this book disappointed me. This story is not the same as "The Cannon Fodder and Villain’s Happy Ending" but there are similar elements - like

  • Smooth MC and her MIL relationship.
  • MIL divorcing the ML's father.
  • Author lacks creativity in romance, so she reused the date scene - MC picking flowers with ML
  • Antogonists have unrelenting love relationship with other antogonist
  • ML has good partner he can rely
  • At the end MC and ML have a daughter.
What I didn't like about this book:

  • MC had a too-bright halo. Everyone is always in awe of her halo.
  • I don't know much about acupuncture, but if I were to compare with giving someone a shot for example - I don't think it's a skill you can gain by just reading books? Shouldn't they get some practical experience before they can confidently stab a needle? Our MC ofcourse reads book left behind by her grandfather and she performs acupuncture accurately EVERYTIME? It's illogical.
  • ML was overshadowed by pretty much everything in the story. He barely had any screentime.
IDK why MC in this book felt more annoying. I loved the MC in "The Cannon Fodder and Villain’s Happy Ending" <<less

It’s a 2.5

It’s a cliché rebirth novel. Liked that the former protagonist of the world is a transmigrated person turned villain allowing our FL to take revenge lol. All the male except ML seems excessively dumb? The ML’s brother is an idiotic self-righteous selfish bastard (literally and figuratively) he’s my least favorite character.

If you liked The Cannon Fodder and Villain’s Happy Ending, you'll probably end up liking this one too. TROACFG is kinda like an alternate universe for THCFAVH. Xiao Shou is the equivalent character of Gu Zezhi, although in here Xiao Shou is a eunach. MTL is easy to understand.
