The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love

Description

An internet troll who wanted attention, the reader criticized his favorite web novel, saying: “The protagonist is dumb and the author is s*upid.”

Author: “…Got it.”

Unfortunately for him, the author actually listened to his (troll) feedback. The formerly lighthearted tale of a cute harem master suddenly became super dark and edgy. The reader could only helplessly look on as the protagonist was abused and betrayed, finally embarking on the road to becoming completely evil. Everything was a mess!

After that the reader transmigrated into a strange world. How come the person in front of him looks like the protagonist (evil undead version)? Just what is going on?!

Note: Du Zhe (读者 meaning Reader) and Du Ze (杜泽 the character’s name) sound almost the same

One of the best yaoi novel I've ever read!

Progression of relationship between MC and ML is quite slow, but that makes the story interesting and difference from other love at first sight novel.

Once ML love the MC, it's very sweet and sometime ecchi >/////< Some people may not like love-scene and how possessive ML can be toward MC, but I really like that =., =

It can be understanding why ML is so obsessed with MC, and he is so caring and will never hurt the MC, that is very sweet... more>> about him~ <<less

I absolutely love everything about the story the reasons are already explained by other reviewers. There is one more thing that I love about this is the fast translation and the quality of it. The ending is also perfect

about the plot, at first I read this novel with lazy feeling because for me at the beginning part of the story kinda confusing even when I read it till the newest chapter it still kinda have a loop hole here and there, like there's some things need a clear explanation but it didn't give that, but fortunately I still get the point, so it's okay..

Since I still have interest with the idea of transmigration so I keep reading it.. Even tho not binge read it yet..

I read it slowly... more>> (i start read it when it have 45+ chaps I think) and YES this novel didn't disappoint me! ?. The best part of this novel is the relationship between the MC and the ML, especially how ML's (the Gong) feelings toward the MC (the Shou) so obsessive, so loyal, etc (you get what I meant when you read it. Lol)

The point is you have to read this novel patiently to reach to the best part, I myself start binge read it at chaps 25+ I think.. The plot starts to very much interest me, the comedy is funny, the romance is awesome too. So you definitely won't regret it if you read it till the latest chap.

Thanks a lot for BCnovels for pick this novel as their project. Gonna send hug hug hug then kiss kiss kiss for y'all.. ??? <<less

I just love this. I came from the manhua and immediately became hooked. The story is so engaging and it wraps everything up so well. The fantasy, pacing, action, romance, and comedy are all awesome. I laughed so many times. I was even questioning my sanity (in a good way) by the end of it. The translator did a wonderful job. This is my first BL web novel, but I think it's the start of a new addiction. Will definitely reread some time in the future.

This was one of the first BL transmigrations I read. It was years ago and reading through it again was still mostly fresh cause there were many things that I forgot. MC, Du Ze, doesn't talk much due to social phobia but it isn't necessary cause ML, Xiu, always puts MC first. He pays close attention to ML's micro expressions to try to understand MC better and fulfill MC's wants. Actually ML is a super obsessive but not in the "I'm going to lock you up cause it's all about... more>> what I want" kind of way but the "You can go where you wanna go but I'll be there with you." It's kind of scary but not too scary.

Anyways, I enjoyed the romance. The first time I read this, I don't think I read the NSFW chapters. So I gave it a go this time... ahhh 😂. The plot has a lot of action and the ending is a happy one. So I enjoyed giving this novel another read.

There is a r*pe tag and this spoiler explains it

Spoiler

MC and ML were already a couple and had already slept together at this point. They got into a situation in which ML was forced to eat an aphrodisiac so he would mate with other females. ML resisted and escaped with MC. At this time, he was out of his mind and forced MC. MC understood that ML was not himself and did not blame ML.

[collapse]

Now for the plot spoilers

Spoiler

MC was summoned into the novel by the novel's "Creator of the World" (CW). This character realized that he was actually not the so called "creator" and that there was another higher level entity who was the real creator but did not know who. MC knew the real creator is the author of Mixed Blood.

CW had seen ML become stronger and on the course to be the Supreme God. However, if ML becomes the top god, then CW would have to die then. To prevent his death, he turned back time to before ML became powerful. He also summoned a higher entity (MC) to kill ML. MC was summoned because his comments to the author made it seem like he hated ML. CW thought MC was then willing to kill ML.

At the end of the novel, MC unwillingly went back to his world. ML searched for MC in the novel world and tried to summon MC. In the end, MC's comment to the author helped ML come into the real world. They reunited and ML took over the creative control of the novel world from the author.

It's not the best thing out there, but I really enjoyed the read. The main characters were both complex and fun to follow in their journey. Their relationship is a bit toxic, yes, but it fits with the mood of the story and their personalities, so it didn't bother me. For me, personally, the fact that the MC is not s*upid and clueless was a bonus point, it was fun following his logic and thinking and the ending for me was a fitting one.

Also all the lemon is amazing (ML's... more>> eighth forms make an appearance and oh, boy...) <<less

This book is very meta, but in my opinion manages to pull that off well (which is difficult). The author manages to use a bunch of transmigration tropes in ways I wasn't expecting. They even manage to make the golden finger cheats feel appropriate, whereas in most novels they seem overdone. The thing I'm most impressed with is how well the author made the book inside a book thing work - I really felt like the book that the reader transmigrated into was a real book.

Ahh... One of the first BL novels that I loved. It has already been three years since I finished reading this. And the emotions, excitement and horror that I felt while reading this, the notes I wrote while typing down the different races that already appeared - rating them from my most favourite to least favourite, all were too vivid. I was reading the Picked Up by the Protagonist (PUP) novel yesterday and suddenly felt disappointed on the plot development. The premise kinda reminded me of The Reader and Protagonist... more>> so here I am, rereading this gem once more. <<less

5/5

I read this years ago, and I believe this (and FOD) were my gateway into BL and yandere/obsessives MLs. While I don't remember a lot of the details and such, I remember that I LOVED this novel and I think it was one of my favourites... so for being one of my fave BLs and for bringing me into the black hole that is BL, I have to give it a 5/5.

From what I remember I loved the MC and ML together, and the way they helped each other through... more>> their trauma... and I also loved MC's obliviousness to everything haha. <<less

I'm new to this type of novels and probably my first CN novel so I'm not used to some of the terminologies/slang. Generally, they were easy enough for me to understand once I got used to them so it didn't affect the story for me in the long run.

Story: It was slow at the beginning but once the "Reader" and "Protagonist" meet, it's hard to stop reading. What I liked about this novel was that (aside from the first few chapters) the flow of the story wasn't boring. The pacing... more>> was perfect for me: doesn't stay too long on an arc, rarely any unnecessary fillers, and the way it was written made me want to read more and more...

Characters: I have nothing bad to say for any of the characters, whether mains or sides. The story doesn't focus too much on the side characters so there's not much to criticize them for. The protagonist's possessiveness was just the right amount of possessiveness that I like in a character (his actions were justifiable for me). The reader's lack of physical strength/facial emotion, etc didn't bother me since it was part of his charm in the story (scared to death on the inside but stone faced lol). It also deviates from the usual OP isekai'd characters that are rampant nowadays. For me, both mains balance each other out (in terms of their needs and wants).

NSFW vs SFW: I admit, I love BL so I always go for the NSFW version. It was actually one of the reasons why I chose to read this novel ("smut" tag). I started to read for the smut, but stayed for the plot while still appreciating the smut. Aside from one part (*cough* dragon), I generally liked how it was written (for BL fans).

Conclusion: I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. What started out as a BL novel to pass the time with ended up with me liking it to the point that I wrote this review (first review!). Highlight is definitely the main characters! The ending is usually the one that disappoints me. For this novel, I probably give it an 8/10. If you're on the fence on reading this novel, I'd say if you're into: possessive characters, yaoi (nsfw) /shounen ai (sfw), isekai, and fantasy then I'd recommend reading it. <<less

I want to give this a 5 but there is some cleaning to be done in the final edits that was never addressed, that said...

In summary: I have read, and re-read this novel when nothing else was on the table. Looking at it purely from a storytelling perspective it's excessively engaging right from the start. How many protagonists have you discovered that are saddled with legitimate deficiencies and certainly no golden button to immediately overturn those hurdles? There are themes of abuse, both mental and physical, please be advised,... more>> the tags don't lie and the ML is not a saint. <<less

Despite the hype, the weak and inconsistent parts of the story really dragged down the quality.

I liked the ending and ML knowing the ‘truth’, but have issues with how much the MC becomes useless after the half-way mark of the novel. He becomes a decorative vase and exists to spark the ML’s emotions and character journey and his own becomes increasingly ignored. MC’s disability was such an important part, and it’s ‘fixed’ in a way that felt trite and ableist. The middle of the novel just drags and the ML... more>> does not have the charisma to keep it moving or interesting. <<less

Perhaps because I'm distracted with writing between breaks, but I just can't seem to focus on the story T.T I made it a quarter of the way through and found that I have little to no excitement when it came to the characters. It's not a bad read though!! In fact, I'd say it's a pretty good read, with interesting characters (well, I found the MC interesting if a bit passive) and great worldbuilding (would be better if it was a little slower paced so I can enjoy it. As... more>> it stands, so much had happened that the worldbuilding wasn't really important). Bah, anyway it's partly my brain's fault. It can't handle multi-tasking when I'm outlining.

I'll just have to come back to reread another time. This novel is worth the read, I think, but I should be more focused when I do read it, since the pacing is so fast and so many things happen. <<less

This was one of the very first BL novels I read. I picked it up because it's completed and at that time, most novels were not. I'm quite happy with how it ended! I like the ML and MC, especially the R18 chapters, which are worth a reread if you like that sort of thing. The way the ML can change into very different forms and personalities made the story feel fresh.

It all started with a doujinshi book.

The way the MC transmigrated was so smooth and appalling that I had to double back and reread that part just to make sure I didn't misread it 😂 And guess how he got transmigrated?

Spoiler

No, it's not because of the doujinshi at all. It was just a coincidence that Du Ze got transmigrated while reading the dj book. This is all I'll say 🤐

[collapse]

I'm just gonna breakdown a few factors that I have some opinions of.

  • ROMANCE: Some may think that the romance happened too fast but I have to disagree. The ML may appear to fall in love with the MC too quickly but there was a time skip of 3 years and even after that, the ML's feelings was more of a desire to monopolize before having any hints of romantic love. Besides, the story isn't just about romance but also focuses on the adventures of the MC & the ML, their travels all around the Chaos continent, their fateful encounters of one race to another, and their battles against their enemies that's why the pacing for the romance in the story was just right in my opinion.
  • SMUT: Regarding the smut scenes, I already expected it. When there's a combination of R*pe and Beastkin in the tags, I was fully aware of what I was going into. But you don't have to worry because there's only 1 smut scene that's a bit painful to read. If you can't handle it, you can skip it and it won't affect your understanding of the whole story. Aside from that scene, the rest of their pa pa pa are *french kiss* The author was kind enough to gift us the 8 races' different versions of doing the deed 😉
Spoiler

The ML got his favorite person hurt and even traumatized him cause of that certain painful-to-read smut scene that I was talking about. Drugged or not, driven like crazy or not, conscious or not, it was still wrong. However, Xiu repented a lot and even went as far as telling Du Ze that he'll make all the people who hurt him disappear even if it's Xiu. After that, Xiu was always careful not to hurt Du Ze again. He always makes sure to properly prepare him and all. I also like how our silly little cute Du Ze handled it afterward. He said: “You can’t disappear. I will always stay by your side.” AAAAA MY HEART 😭❤️‍🔥

[collapse]

  • CHARACTERS:
Spoiler

Du Ze (MC) - His poker face game is strong but on the inside, he's literally a cinnamon roll. He's silly and borderline s*upid. But for me, his silliness is not annoying. It's actually pretty cute. His initial desire/goal of wanting to see the ML become a god was the epitome of him being a fan boy of his favorite character.

It's funny how the MC is always being misunderstood as a strong entity hiding his true power and unlocking titles such as High-Level Dragon and High-Level Demon one after another even though it's actually the opposite. It's also hilarious when all the spirit beasts are scared of him. The funniest one was the unicorn. It kept on turning into a nightmare once the MC touches or rides it 😂 Moreover, it's funny how his hearing aid always goes on strike at the most crucial times 😂 I swear there's a system secretly built in there and its main mission is to troll the MC 😂 Same with the doujinshi book (the accursed book)

There's a lot of lines that Du Ze said in the novel that I really love but what stuck to me the most was when he said that the mixed bloods, specifically referring to Xiu, was a miracle. Initially, I thought that he's gonna say something cliché like "you're special" or something but noooo what he said was actually so much better.

Xiu (ML) - Out of all the blackened/yandere MLs I've read so far, Xiu is among my favorites. He's the kind of possessive, yandere that I like—crazy but still thinks about Du Ze's well-being. He's like a milder version of a yandere ML. I've read a couple of novels where a yandere ML literally locks up the MC, completely restricting his freedom and even forces the MC to do the deed even if the MC doesn't want to. Those are just too painful to bear that's why I prefer Xiu cause he still thinks about the MC's well-being and makes sure not to hurt him (well, except that one scene).

Wherever the MC goes, Xiu accompanies him and he trusts Du Ze completely. He's hopelessly crazy in love with Du Ze that I can't help but want to smack the silly MC sometimes for being naive and denying Xiu's feelings in the initial chapters. The scene where Xiu confessed his love for Du Ze and Du Ze finally got to hear the "song" was so heartwarming and full of feels 🤧

Other supporting characters that I like the most are:

  1. Violet - because she's a loyal subordinate and understanding towards the relationship between the ML & MC
  2. Old John - because he's the most dependable 40 thousand year old grandpa
  3. Our cute little Chirp, the Phoenix - sadly, it didn't get a name even till the end
    [collapse]
Maybe because I read this story twice with a long break period in between that's why I understood, thought, and saw things in a broader and more profound manner. Admittedly, during the first time that I read this novel, I sometimes get a little bit annoyed of the MC's naivety and lack of proactiveness when it comes to getting his self out of a predicament, especially when he gets repeatedly kidnapped. Moreover, when the Tower of God appeared, I felt like it suddenly got inserted into the story out of nowhere that's why I kinda lost the motivation to continue so I stopped. But recently, I was in the mood to reread this novel so I read from the very beginning and thankfully this time, I finished it. When I read this novel for the 2nd time, I had a more lighthearted intake of it and found the MC still silly yet adorable & funny.

I also like the part where at the end of every chapter, the author includes an excerpt from the OG story so the readers can compare the differences between what happened on that chapter versus what really happened in the original

Regarding the ending, the perfect way to describe it is that everyone lived happily ever after—literally everyone. Although I have no qualms about a happy ending, it almost felt like it was too "happy" in my opinion, like not too realistic at all. It was quite obvious that it's an ending meant to satisfy the readers since "all is well". Also, it felt rushed.

Anyway, my real rating of this story is around 4.3-4.5 but since I'm extremely satisfied with the ML & MC's relationship, I gave it 5 ⭐️ I could 100% attest that the reader and protagonist definitely have to be in true love ❤️👍 <<less

The MC and ML are so cute together and clearly perfect for each other. Sometimes in novels like these I feel slightly uncomfortable like "oh no, the MC just stole the ML from the original story character" but in this book it was clear that the ML's life was 100% better when the MC was there.

While the ML was super possessive, it was written in a way that made it really cute and also helped portray just how compatible the Reader and the Protagonist were together. Anytime the Protagonist got... more>> possessive or clingy, the reader didn't get annoyed at all and just saw it as the ML being the "Moe Lord".

Overall, the romance was great and well thought out and the plot was also pretty interesting and well rounded. <<less

This novel feels like a messy fanfic. Author pours bunch of DND information and gives no proper dialogue. When I checked further chapters, this issue didn't seem to be solved. There is explanation on top of explanation and not much dialogue to give character to the story. It's just very dull.
Also not much of a spoiler so I'm going to talk about this:

I read this a while ago and forgot to review then so I’ll do it now.

Overall, pretty cute story. It didn’t always feel grounded at times, more dreamy than anything else, but it was pretty fun.

I did like the MC and ML a lot so that really got me through some of the less interesting parts because I was invested in their story.
