The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love

Description

An internet troll who wanted attention, the reader criticized his favorite web novel, saying: “The protagonist is dumb and the author is s*upid.”

Author: “…Got it.”

Unfortunately for him, the author actually listened to his (troll) feedback. The formerly lighthearted tale of a cute harem master suddenly became super dark and edgy. The reader could only helplessly look on as the protagonist was abused and betrayed, finally embarking on the road to becoming completely evil. Everything was a mess!

After that the reader transmigrated into a strange world. How come the person in front of him looks like the protagonist (evil undead version)? Just what is going on?!

Note: Du Zhe (读者 meaning Reader) and Du Ze (杜泽 the character’s name) sound almost the same

This is a great love story! The main character (the Reader) is deaf which is unusual for Chinese novels. MC is a very funny person. In the modern world he is a student still living with his mother. He loves to read web novels but he has a bad habit of always trolling his favorite author for attention. This ends in tears (bad troll! Bad!) as the author actually listened to his troll feedback and made the novel (the reader's favorite one) turn from the story of a cheerful, moe... more>> super OP harem hero into a super dark and edgy tale of a villain who was hated and betrayed by everyone he knows.

The real story starts when the MC is transported into the world of the novel.

Crazy hi-jinks! Shenanigans!

Very slight spoilers here since these happen within the first 3 chapters:

Spoiler

The MC meets the hero/villain Xiu for the first time and says "meow~." MC french kisses a skeleton!

[collapse]

The tone of the story is humorous most of the time but there are times when it gets serious. I seriously cried and laughed many times while reading it.

The MC is one of the best I have read. He's smart, he knows what he wants, and goes for it. He's very brave and loyal!

The male lead is very possessive and appreciative of the MC. He has eight different forms that he can shapeshift into. Each form has a different type of power and his personality also changes when he shifts but he always remains protective and loving towards the MC.

Spoiler about the smut parts:

Spoiler

The male lead's favorite thing is to have sexy time with the MC in all eight forms. LOL, he really likes to give MC a good workout in bed.

[collapse]

The smut is only around 5/95 chapters so it's not a lot but what is there is very memorable due to the male lead's many different forms. The best thing about it is that the romance greatly overshadows the smut. I mean, this is not a story where there's tons of smut in the first place and what smut it does contain is very touching because it is always in the context of their rapidly evolving relationship.

The ending is perfect. Absolutely perfect. I have zero complaints about it. It's one of the most satisfying endings of any BL novel I have ever read. <<less

Honestly, this is one of the best web novels I've ever read. Not only is the plot a unique twist on something we've seen time and time again, the author is unbelievably talented at showing the emotional growth/emotional comprehension of the characters. The main character is probably the most human MC I've come across in a light novel, especially his unashamed favoritism of the ML as his favorite novel's protagonist that I can totally sympathize with (can't tell you how many times I've justified unreasonable actions/events just on the basis... more>> of 'the protagonist deserves' lol).

The romance is super well done. There's no immediate falling in love, no perfect love. The author just conveys the raw emotions so well you can't help but get s**ked in; the awesome yet insecure ML and his desperate way of loving the MC gives me heartache (when I'm not mildly creeped out), while the MC's denseness and attempts to hook the ML up with his harem while hugging his thighs take me from laughter to tears and back. You slowly see them move from hostility, to comfort, to love, to a sort of bone deep, only-reason-I-exist type love while moving along the plot of the original novel within the novel. It's quite a lovely story, actually, and I strongly recommend it to those who like or are ambivalent about BL. Ugh I hope this author has more works because I'm such a fan of this one! <<less

Ch17.1 may be too early to judge the quality of this story, but here are my thoughts.

The Reader and the Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love has a gripping premise of a reader being s**ked into the world of a web novel in order to change its story. It promises to be an epic love story between the reader who adores the 'cute/meng' protagonist, and the sullied, broken protagonist. The story revolves around the premise that the protagonist's fate of suffering was caused by the reader, Du Ze,... more>> trolling the author so much that the author decided 'Fine, if you think this story is so bad, I'll make it bad'. And so, the web novel which should have been about an all-powerful harem-getting protagonist instead ended up with the protagonist betrayed and crushed by all of his friends and lovers.

There are several points which led me to not enjoy this story:
1. The timeline. This may simply be my lack of reading comprehension, but... well, it's very confusing. How much of the story is already written? How far did the protagonist get in his quest to unlock the 8 races of blood in his body before awakening his undead Lich blood and being betrayed and blackened? If this was the most recent development in the story (as it seemed to be since Du Zhe had been trying to encourage the author to write more after the author had flipped on the story) then how the heck does Du Zhe know so much about the other elements of the story to the point of pretending to be a prophet? And if the undead Lich blood was one of the first ones to awaken then how was there so much happening before that point to warrant an entire book being published and doujinshi being made? I really don't understand this.

2. The main leads have no chemistry, and they themselves have no charm points. As of ch17.1 the story has already left its cardinal promise unfulfilled: I, the reader, have not fallen in love with the protagonist. Du Zhe started promisingly with the idea of a rotten-mouthed but sweet-hearted character that uses insults to attract the attention of his beloved (author), but come the actual plot events and he becomes a wooden block. Add to that, the protagonist has no personality. He has the generic Personality Switch Set that comes with a standard BL seme. Switch 1: He is cold and tortures others. Switch 2: He is extremely possessive and thinks his love interest is only his (to torture/kill/love?). These two characters don't talk to each other beyond extremely bland dialogue about information exchange. If you set two rocks next to each other in a garden, that's the kind of interaction these two characters have. Du Zhe has told us many many times that "the protagonist is so meng/cute!" "So meng!" Yet where do we see that in the first chapters? Never. Actually, only in the author's notes at the end. The little noncanon skits were the closest I got to liking the protagonist.

What could save this is if Du Zhe had any sort of attraction to the protagonist, but of course this has to be a "wolf chases the rabbit" scenario where the protagonist falls first, for whatever reason. While we see all of Du Zhe's inner ramblings and personality, all the protagonist sees is basically a robot that lets him torture it and protects him with its own body. Is Du Zhe even human? Why exactly does the protagonist come to love him? Only in the latest translated chapters do we see the revealings of vulnerability in Du Zhe that could potentially lead to romance, but the protagonist immediately leaps to a selfishly obsessive possession. The author has not laid any proper foundation for a believable romantic relationship at this point of time, and so I am greatly unsatisfied.

3. Story and plot pacing. I get the impression that this story is written on the fly without any planning, as it jumps from one event to the next while padded with Du Zhe's panicked inner reactions. We get little sense of location and setting, despite the extremely detailed backstory of the novel. Rather, the world and its obstacles act more like a glass dome backdrop around the two protagonists as they are inevitably meshed together as a couple due to the fact that this is a BL novel. Perhaps this will change when more characters are introduced and the protagonist is forced to confront his past.

Since this story continues on for many more chapters with good reviews I am hopeful that the writer becomes more experienced and can successfully tie together all of the disparate elements that they have left undeveloped. Unfortunately, I think that they started this story with fatal flaws regarding the two main characters' personality attributes. In my opinion, I think this story would have been more interesting if it had been about the Reader and the Author's love, as at least there we had seen some effort on Du Zhe's part to chase the author, and the author's response to Du Zhe. For this story to be saved and for me to consider that the reader and protagonist are in true love, the protagonist has to start earnestly caring for the reader as more than just "a thing that belongs to him".

In any case, I give it 3 stars because it has potential and is well-translated. Overall, the story has an interesting premise but lacking execution. <<less

Absolutely amazing. This is exactly what I look for in a novel. Not only did it have a complex and well thought out plot with great pacing, the character development was steady and believable. I loved that the plot actually ventured on a dark path and I enjoyed the grotesque descriptions. There was action. There was adventure. Most importantly, it was consistent. Sometimes I feel like halfway through BL novels (specifically), the author gives up on the plot so the main CP can get together. That doesn't happen in this... more>> story. Everything about it was intense, especially the romance. The attention to detail not only wraps everything up nicely, it weaves and threads the piece together.

Spoiler

The pacing was so smooth that while I was writing notes for this review, I had to stop and think, "Man, what really happened? I don't think much has changed since x happened besides y." However, I would then realize that while I was distracted by the building romance, there were other things going on, or while I was absorbed in the action scenes, the characters would break through to some important detail. I just didn't notice because everything just felt too natural.

The H scenes were written extremely well. Most authors either skim over the scene (damn those crabs and curtains!!), or write something really generic. However this author actually did their research into the anatomy of some of the forms and again, the attention to detail is amazing. Small, almost insignificant, interactions between the main CP will be brought up in a way that just really lets you feel the love, and it builds up into a mountain so sturdy, even the limits of space and time can't hold them back. I loved that this was a world made exclusively for the main CP even though it likes to throw trials and tribulations at them. Hell, even the title says so. When the world itself is rooting for you, you know it's gotta be good.

A real review for anyone interested in what the book is really about, rather than the misleading 5 star reviews!

Written by a r*pe victim.

This book is terrible, it honestly needs a R*pe tag and/or a R*pe Victim Becomes Lover tag because this is straight up abuse in all senses of the word. Physically, Psychologically and all the inbetween, the only tag that they did include was the Yandere tag which is true because the LI is a creepy possessive *sshole, and its extremely unhealthy.

If romanticised abuse... more>> and r*pe is your thing, go ahead and read it, but I found this disturbing, especially since too many people are calling the romance 'adorble and cute' when it's not, y'all need help.

I wouldn't have had such a problem with this book if it was adressed as being the abuse that it portrays but it was romanticised. I can read non-con just fine as long as it is presented as exactly that, not 'love and romance' so no I did not appreciate this book and it's an insult for anyone who has suffered abuse.

Don't make a fetish of my trauma. <<less

Honestly, it was OK. The beginning was really good, but later it got boring, mostly because of the MC. He was boring, bland, expressionless, quiet, shy, timid yeah you got it (the persona of an otaku). I wasn´t intrigued by anything he did. But obviously from the comments that type of personality is well liked here in NU. There was fighting, and friendship but felt like the author was just following a script. Nothing original. What I always hate are weak MC with no power. And thats what he is.... more>> Why I hate it? Because they need to depend on others to survive, that, or by luck. ML is a typical ML. Ending was wrapped in a very convenient way just for the sake of a happy ending. Still confused over how popular this novel is. <<less

The review section is flourishing with 5-star ratings. However, I disagree. I have to shed some light here. Might be spoiler-ish.

The plot is messy, characters are boring, the way the novel was written was a mess. Not engaging at all.

MC is useless. He has no purpose for coming to ML's world, he's only there for the sake of existing. He has no power, has to get carried by ML, bland. Yes, let's say he did save ML at the beginning, but that's it. Later on, he becomes more and more... more>> useless so he just gets dragged around.

Meanwhile, ML is a f*cking rapist. He forced s*xual interc**rse on MC without his consent until MC was badly injured. Imagine being forced by a man whose strength way surpasses you over and over until you get ripped to shreds. He basically has no personality AT ALL, just that he loves MC and is overprotective yada yada.

Halfway through the story, I just couldn't continue reading anymore. This was mediocre. The concept itself is unique with the eight bloodlines thing. However, the execution was ter-ri-ble. Sigh. Seeing so many 5-star reviews, I thought this novel might be amazing. Well, it is indeed, amazingly bad. <<less

Huhuhu even though this was a bit of a pain to read via MTL but when I finished it, I just wanted to cry QAQ

As the others have said, the ending was perfect. No loose ends, everything was properly explained. The plot was superb, there's lots of twist that will make you laugh and keep you hooked on the story.

If you haven't read this, you are missing out! Definitely give it a try and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. *-*

If you're looking for a BL novel that has a unique premise with a twist, good plot development, great humor and mutually exclusive loving couple... look no further. This is definitely a must read for all BL lovers out there. It has been so long since I ended a novel with a satisfied heart. It's amazingly good for a novel that only has 95 chapters! Best of all, it doesn't have pointless misunderstanding and dramas! There's too many moments that I love and nothing can justify the scene with... more>> my meager words... Go ahead and take the journey yourself to experience all these amazing feelings. You're gonna regret if you pass this gem up! <<less

It starts out really well. And yeah, it has one of the best and most unique endings I've ever seen.

Besides that, however, I don't find much enjoyment here. The storyline is trite and cliche, the feelings either show out of nowhere or from illogical "misunderstandings, " it treats women as less than human, glosses over world building, heavily relies on Deus ex machinas, has minimal character development, and contains some of the most unreasonable presentations of Stockholm Syndrome that I've ever seen! A third of the thing is smut! Dubiously... more>> consensual smut at that. Actually, I would straight up classify the first s*xual encounter as 'rape' because it happened due to our protagonist fearing for his own well-being.

I had to straight up force myself to finish the story after the mid-twentieth something chapter. I don't really regret reading it to the end, because, well, the ending was nice (and earned an extra ⭐️ from me) But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

TBH, I don't get why people like this so much. Or why so many people recommend it for people who are tentative about BL light novel exploration. Those who do so are very mean. Yes, it very much satisfies a niche, but is NOT representative of the genre. Much like how "Boku no Pico" is not representative of yaoi anime (or just anime in general). I cannot express how much I despise trolls who rec stuff like this to new people. <<less

I love this novel! The writing style is very hilarious. The MC's monologues are laugh-inducing, blaming the Doujinshi (his life-long companion), the hearing aids (that always going on strike), the plotlines (that deviate from the original) and etc when the events that occur goes wrong (because he took over the harem members' role XP). I also love how the MC's expectation is so high for the protagonist but the protagonist just goes his own way without a care for the world. I have great expectation for this novel yay!

I... more>> want to thank the translator for translating this story! Recently, there are many BL being translated. It's truly a bless for us fujoshi haha. <<less

I like writing reviews for novels that really stand out to me. The reader (one of the main characters) is someone with a very special personality. He has a great deal of trouble expressing his emotions but he really loves (though not the right kind of love, yet) and idolizes the protagonist. The protagonist on the other hand is currently hating on the world because of the s*upidity of the people he once considered friends and comrades. This story is funny, has great room for development, and keeps you hooked... more>> waiting for the next chapter. The translator is awesome too because they are updating basically daily and they are also including images to further give us an idea of what is happening in the story. Definitely recommend this story. <<less

This one deserves 5 stars for me. Why? It's good. Had a good plot. You will never get bored. And had smexy scene (insert nosebleeding emoji here).

I love DuZe and Xiu's character. They were perfect for each other. Du ze being a silly one and Xiu being so clingy and possessive they were just ughhh (insert fangirl scream here).
Overall it was VERY good.

That's my review as a rotten one.

A hilarious YY novel turned BL. If you're not familiar with the term, imagine the standard trope of cultivation genius, a harem full of girls, and villains to faceslap. Except because of MC, the author turned the story down the dark path full of betrayals. MC is transported into the novel with only one ability; he gets restored back to his initial state each midnight.

I'll be honest and say behind the truly funny writing, this novel is heart-wrenching and liable to make you cry. At a glance it seems like... more>> one of those Japanese webnovel about entering an otome game, but

    • MC hasn't finished reading the story. His omniscience stopped where he last read the webnovel, and the longer he stayed the more things change.
    • He tried so hard to change ML (protag of the novel) 's fate because of his guilt over the author twisting ML's fate, sticking up for ML every single time, giving him everything. But with his poker face and social awkwardness it kinda backfired and made him seem distant and out-of-this-world for ML, causing more mental issues later on.
    • He already got peeks of a future where ML destroyed the world because he lost someone. Foreboding continues throughout the story.
    • The development of his relationship with ML will make you cry. And you'll feel the same guilt as him for ML's turning black. And when you get over that, another bomb is dropped....
    • The smut is hot ofc what are you expecting??
    • Really, really neat wrapping up of loose ends. This is far more than I can say for lots, lots, lots of random transport-to-another-world novels.
Overall an excellent read. Props to translation team, thank you guys for this gem, this highlight of my day. <<less

I joined NU just to post this.

This is the one CN BL novel that I really love. The protagonist, Xiu, is so sexy and dreamy while the reader, Du Ze, is very cute and lovable. The story is actually really funny!

The characters are the best part though the plot is also interesting. I was surprised by some of the minor plot twists throughout the story. The ending is great. I only read mtl but I was very satisfied with what happened in the end and the various revelations which made... more>> sense and were foreshadowed before they happened.

The translation is super fast, with daily updates. There are errors here and there (mostly typos) but they are quickly fixed when someone points them out. <<less

This is the first yaoi novel I've read. At first I was a bit hesitant to read it since I'm only half-fujoushi (haha XD) and I only read yaoi in manga, but booooy am I wrong! This is a must read!

So far no sexy moment has appeared yet and all seems innocent, but don't let that fool you... the protagonist, Xue, thinks otherwise. Sooo I just happened to read this because one of the translators I followed translated this (BC Novels). Putting it aside that this one has a manhua (which is not translated but is worth to see), the novel itself is actually pretty good for me. This is one of the novels that has a relatable MC since he didn't actually gain an oh-so-OP characterization except for some things (*wink), you'll know once you've read it. I also enjoyed the 4th wall breaks between the author and the MC (it's like... more>> a transmigration-ception kind of thing wherein the reader as himself is transported to the novel world and the author somehow reacts on every situation our MC is in as well as the ML). The ML also has interesting background and I'm definitely looking forward to this and how he'll be with our MC. It's interesting and enjoyable. I think it's worth your time ;) <<less

Why exactly does this book have so many 5 star reviews? MC is so bland, so freaking bland like a pizza without cheese, crust, sauce, toppings... oops. Yeah, he is exactly that bland. And ML. Oh god, the ML. He is a f*cking rapist.

Normally, the tag "rape" alone makes me never touch the book. And this novel didn't have r*pe tag when I read it. r*pe should be condemned. It should never be romanticized. Do you know what happens in one chapter? MC gets so r*ped that he nearly dies.... more>> He gets r*ped by ML when he's in his f*cking dragon-human form with two dicks, and blood pours out of MC like a river, mate. Yup.
