Not everyone may like it, and there are reasons for that.
But if you like a mature novel with mature characters, their growth, and realism, then you should definitely pay attention to this work. The plot is very realistic, it shows well how cruel and unfair the social world can be. How you need to be able to compromise, and to achieve success sometimes you need to bend for someone, even if you don’t want to.
The plot perfectly shows how women live in China, and what attitude they have, and how they navigate the social world, and what lengths they go to for success. Of course, this was only part of what we were shown. But after reading this book, you will no doubt understand the world in China much better from a woman’s perspective.
But the plot is not devoid of colors; while reading it, you don’t even realize how you feel: now there’s a smile on your face, now there’s shock, then there’s sadness.
The interaction of the characters deserves special attention. The characters are some of the best I've seen in this genre.
Confident, ambitious, and simply stunning, Guo Zhi completely captivated me. Reading about her and her challenges and how she overcomes them and then succeeds was fascinating. To date, she is my favorite female character. I won’t write much about Alex, I’ll say this, they show an insecure boy who cannot find his calling and place in this world. But with the advent of Guo Zhi in his life, everything begins to change for him, and a big leap in character growth is visible. It's very interesting to watch him. To top it off, I’ll say, if you read this short story and you liked it, then I’ll recommend another short story from the same author, about the same story.
Title: Dirt / 泥. I didn’t find this novella in English, so I searched through the author and read it in Chinese, with a translator.
This short story is about Guo Zhi's best friend.
Gu Qingxia, the book tells the story only from the perspective of Gu Qingxia, what she experienced, how she achieved success. Her views on life and people, her ambitions. It was very interesting to read. In parts we are shown Guo Zhi, and their communication on behalf of Gu Qingxia.
The only thing I have to say is that if you read it, prepare to cry, or at least be upset. The novella is really very touching and sad. At the end I couldn't help but shed a tear....
