Transmigrating as a prince’s consort should, in theory, mean living a life of luxury—savoring sumptuous food and drink while having servants at one’s beck and call, right?

But in reality, after she transmigrated, she remained just a prince’s consort. Unfortunately, her man had just failed in his bid for succession.

Currently, while on a more than 2,000‑li (on foot) journey southwest, the new emperor has dispatched his men to eradicate every last trace. Her hapless husband is riddled with poison-induced wounds, with no way forward ahead and enemy pursuers at their heels.

Shao Qing: “……”

Life endures, and the struggle never ceases. Years later, Shao Qing believed she could write a saga of perseverance—transforming herself from a disgraced, exiled wife into an empress, the one whom the emperor loved above all.

[Wei Jing’s Chapter]

“You and I began from insignificant origins—pushing upstream against desperate odds, supporting each other along the way. Among the three thousand streams of meager water, I choose to drink only from one ladle; of all the vast, boundless lands, I wish to share its beauty with only you.”

This was so good that I had to MTL and finish it. I honestly don't know why someone would rate this a 1 star as the story started out very strong and emotionally and ended very nicely. I really hope more people would give this a chance first. The MC is not the typical strong and powerful MC I normally like to read. She has no fighting power, no medical skills, no golden finger and was basically just an ordinary person in her past life. Yet she is very resilient... more>> and has strong willpower. The ML is your typical tragic ML where his family is killed overnight and he himself was captured and forced into exile. He is known as the War God and is the Prince of Qi (2nd prince of the empress) and has immense physical power but becomes very paranoid and guilt-ridden due to his experiences. The original MC and ML were already married but ML had to rushed to the boarder the day of his marriage so they barely know each other. Yet, it's these two people who end up having to rely on each other and create a beautiful touching love story. Honestly, I give the beginning start a 10/10. I've read a lot of these types of novels and the intro of this one is one of my favorites for sure. It compelled me to continue reading on and finish the rest of the novel. It's not perfect but it doesn't have a lot of mistakes in my opinion.

The beginning shows the relationship between MC and ML and how they fall in love. The middle describes the war and difficulties of the ML in trying to regain what he had lost. The ending finishes off our antagonists and brings the story to a close. There are a few lose ends and questions on some background characters but overall, I think the story was very well written and was satisfied with the characters. I would say the novel mainly focuses on the ML rather than our MC. Yes, they are very affectionate but the whole point is for the ML to overthrow the emperor so there's a lot of descriptions about wars and fighting formations, etc.

Even though the MC is from modern times, you rarely see her implementing any modern ideas besides wanting to work instead of staying in the backyard. She is more of an emotional support for the ML than anything else and I don't think the author actually gave an explanation of who she was in her past life. You just get snippets of some things like how she used to grow up near a river or how her parents were divorced and her father cheated on her mother causing her to be wary of falling in love. Even the MC's current life, you don't really know the full story except she was chosen by ML's mother, the empress, at the very beginning to marry ML. MC's father used to love MC's mother but then thought that her mother couldn't produce an heir for him and married his cousin. Later there is more interactions between MC's mother and brother but overall, most of the side characters don't have a lot of screentime and more emphasis is put on ML and his fight. I personally don't mind this as not all side characters need to be too fleshed out since we are reading for the ML and MC.

Regarding the antagonists, at first you think it's the emperor but later you find out it's also one of ML's half brothers. Further in the story, the emperor becomes less relevant because he's too far away to affect ML's fighting until the very end of the novel. So the main focus is ML's half brother, Prince An. He's pretty well written to the point that the reader will hate this guy. He also has a tragic life story but is also extremely cruel to everyone and bloodthirsty. I kinda think the author wrote him this way in order to show that the ML might eventually become like Prince An if he didn't have MC in his life. Anyways, he's really annoying and lived too long IMO.

Overall, I highly recommend reading this novel and giving it a chance. Even though the MC has no power to strangle a chicken, she is still a very strong support for the ML and keeps him from going mad. Only when MC is well can ML be well. The ML is highly protective of MC and you can really see that he truly loves MC throughout the whole story. The side characters are there when they need to be and they all have their little backstories but no one is too overbearing except for maybe Prince An. And there is also a surprised but not really surprising side character who turns out to be more important than originally thought. The novel isn't perfect, but it's a great read. I would suggest reading the first several translated chapters before deciding if you want to continue or not.

A bit of spoiler on the beginning and MC/ML relationship:

Spoiler

The beginning starts out with ML and MC on their road to exile. ML was the 2nd prince of the empress, Empress Fu, and his brother was the Crown Prince. The Crown Prince was a perfect ruler who ruled with compassion and love for his country. ML was one of the best fighter and had guarded the boarder for years in order to support his brother. Suddenly, the emperor, their father, had a sudden stroke and called ML back to the palace. He raced back urgently only to find out that his father had actually never loved his mother the Empress. Instead, his father's true love was Consort Li who was just a servant of the emperor since childhood. He only married Empress Fu in order to control the court and pretended for 20 years to be deeply in love with her in order to pave way for his other son with Consort Li to be the new emperor. Due to the sudden stroke, he accused the Crown Prince of treason, killed his entire family, buried Empress Fu alive with him, and exiled ML and the Fu family far away. ML fell into despair and grief as the father he had always thought loved him and supported him was actually just lying to him his whole life. ML had his scapulae pierced and bound with iron chains which looped around his collarbones and secured to his handcuffs. It was then MC transmigrated and realized her situation. She was very rational and thought about how to escape and eventually concluded that the only way she can survive is by placing her bets on her instant husband. She has no power, no ability, and the only way is by helping ML can she also be safe. Honestly, I really like her self-awareness. Both she and ML have no feelings for each other at this point but if she saved him then he will save her. During an attempted assassination, MC manages to free ML and they break out together. On the run, ML gets hit by a poison arrow and MC manages to save his life. They spent several days narrowly escaping and with the ML weak, the MC showed immense strength in order to save them both. Then, they eventually manage to escape their pursuers by falling into a waterfall. And it's at this time that MC told ML, if they die then at least they can die together, and I think this is when ML falls for MC.

They manage to survive the waterfall and is saved by a family. From this point on, the ML only trusts MC. So when he's going out to investigate, he'll first put MC in a safe place or he'll take MC with him. He would rather have MC with him so he's sure he can save her than place her somewhere he can't see. I personally think this is very sweet and I really like a dedicated ML who boldly shows that MC is more important to him than his own life. He rarely lets her take any risks and even if she does, he gets very angry but can't bear to yell at her so he just becomes frustrated by himself. MC's feelings, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated. She doesn't fall for the ML at the very beginning. Even though she knows she'll probably only have ML for the rest of her life, she's afraid to fall in love with him because of her past life's experience with her parents and even in the current life's parents experiences. She's willing to be with him, but she's not willing to give her heart because she's afraid he'll take in concubines, especially since this is ancient times where's it normal and expected for men to have more than one wife. It takes a while for MC to overcome this fear but ML is willing to wait for her. And their love story is very sweet and satisfying. I don't think it was unusual for them to fall in love and I don't think it was very rushed. I think they both loved each other but it just took a bit for both of them to finally realize it. But once they did, it was perfect.
