It started from a mystical dynasty that had been lost in the history of the past. From there, their life began to interlace, but at the same time, they died. In the 21st century, Hai Lan, one of the members in the archaeological team, was saved by her ex-boyfriend, Qin Ge, when she was in danger while excavating an ancient tomb. Because of that, Qin Ge died.

In Qin Ge’s mourning hall, Hai Lan learned that he had been with her for three years as she was similar to the woman he loved the most.

She was heartbroken when she came to know of the truth. At that moment, she encountered a mysterious woman named Lin Lang. She told her that if Qin Ge was to be reborn, she would have to break the butterfly effect. In other words, she needed to prevent the construction of the ancient tomb. Without it, everything would go back to normal.

Lin Lang had a hidden token, one that was said to have been owned by Fei Tian, the ancestor of ten thousand Buddhas. With the token, Hai Lan would be able to travel to the age of the ancient tomb and change the past.

She contemplated it endlessly and finally decided to travel back in time and change history, rewriting a love that would stay etched in Shangguan Jinghong’s (Qin Ge) mind.

The myths and legends from thousands of years ago, the great secrets that have been lost and forgotten for several generations, who has the ability to uncover them all?

I finished it casually by browsing, so I could have missed some details as of writing this review. But I was taking it all in while rereading. It was actually a 4.16 for me because I liked the angst better in Tyrant. But to uplift the reads I would round it up to perfect 5.

Anyway, albeit being a little more sadistic than Tyrant which is personally the perfect blend of angst and fluff + devoted but cold ML, this was okay for angst-lovers. More than okay. I was only a... more>> little hushed because it took a loooooong time before Shangguan Jinghong here actually exhibited warmth for Qiao Chu. But will all the perfect reasons, tho.

Besides, Qin Ge/Shangguan Jinghong are incarnations

Spoiler

of Fei Tian, the Lord of Ten Thousand Buddhas who was supposed to have no feelings

[collapse]

And because of soooo many identity mixed ups, he became so confused of his real feelings.

Spoiler

There's this time that Qiao Chu saved him while in her older sister's (Qiao Mei) face. So he and everyone thought it was Qiao Mei all along. This gets even more complicated because Shangguan Jinghong at that time was posing as his older brother (the crown prince) too. So even Qiao Mei had to maintain the lie that she was the one who made promises with the crown prince which was actually Shangguan Jinghong in the first place

[collapse]

Even with his "first love" Shen Qingling, Shangguan Jinghong only treats her this way because of thing in the past, when she encouraged him of going and moving on.
Spoiler

But this is also Qiao Chu.

[collapse]

So every little thing and favor that Qiao Chu has done, it was all credited for another person. There are even some mixed ups even in the residues of the 1st life as immortals, so it was a big complicated mess. But with this, I am saying that the plot, as complicated as it is, is top notch, provided how the author managed to unweave it in the end even with all the timeline fiasco. I am still confused if you became so logical about how time flows, but I trust that it has it merits. That it is really impossible to discern which started this all since because the transmigration of Hai Lan to Qiao Chu is like the full circle of it all.

With this said, I can say that it is still cathartic to read the reveals and Shangguan Jinghong's realization of all the mishaps, the mixed ups, and the sufferings that Qiao Chu/Hai Lan/Ruolan has endured.

Angst: 4/5 - well it was definitely sadistic, but too much for me

Plot: 4.5/5 - I love how it was weaved with the mother-child gu of Tyrant, and used in a different but angstier light.

Writing: 4/5 - I would have loved it better if the narration of the pay-offs weren't as fast (yes I don't know why, even though it has so many chapters, I still felt that during the reveals, it was a bit sudden. Could have enjoyed ML to suffer more haha.

So yes. 4.16 for me, rounding up to 5 so people can read read the fan translations.

Happy reading! <<less

This story is like an onion. As you slowly read it, you peel away and uncover layers and layers of plots and sub-plots, all while trying not to sniff and cry.

First, before I launch into the review, just to get it out of the way - I want to talk about the title. Mo Bi Wu Ge's writing is absolutely incredible, but the titles are frankly quite laughable, especially when translated to English. The first time I saw the title of this novel, The Prince Wants to Leave His Concubine,... more>> I had to resist the urge to cringe and roll my eyes at how cliche and bad it sounded. But trust me!! The English name really doesn't accurately capture the beauty of the story, and honestly, the Chinese name, which Fei Wo Qing Cheng (FWQC) is so much better (and meaningful!).

What I love about this story:

    • Beautiful storytelling, intricate plots - Remember what I said about the onion? Just when you think you've uncovered one thing, you dig deeper and find another layer beneath that, and then another one beneath that. The story is so complex and exciting that it almost reads like a mystery/detective novel. You uncover plot after plot, with political intrigue and subterfuge and scheming that's so cleverly and masterfully done that you never feel that it's stale or illogical.
    • Fantastic characters and relationships - Mo Bi Wu Ge has a talent for creating characters that just make you FEEL for them. You'll weep for them when they experience hurt and pain, smile for them when they experience joy and happiness.
    • The angst - This probably isn't for everyone, but I'm a sucker for angst. There's just something so cathartic about reading a character's suffering, their hurt, their pain or maybe I'm just a sadistic psychopath lol. But if you're a fan of angsty novels that wrings up your heart like a crumpled wad of tissue paper then rips it to shreds, then this is the book for you. If you've read and enjoyed Mo Bi Wu Ge's other novel, Love in Another Life: My Gentle Tyrant, then you'll enjoy FWQC, because it's even angstier than Tyrant. (But it is a happy ending though!)
What I didn't like so much:

    • That said, I also sort of disliked the angst in FWQC - While it's angstier than Tyrant, it didn't make me feel for the characters in the same way. Although the female MC of FWQC, Hai Lan / Qiao Chu, goes through so much more pain and hurt than Xuanji / Xiao Qi in Tyrant, I felt Tyrant was so much more heart-wrenching. I sobbed buckets reading about Xuanji's death in Tyrant, but by the point we got to
      Spoiler

      Qiao Chu's death

      [collapse]
in FWQC, all I felt was relief, thinking to myself, "Finally." Perhaps it's thanks to the beautiful translation of Tyrant by catharcity, but perhaps it's also just because there was so much angst in FWQC that I eventually became desensitised. It's like, oh, there we go, Qiao Chu is being treated badly and/or misunderstood by Shangguan Jinghong (the male MC) again.
    • Which leads me to the next thing I didn't like, which is the way the male MC, Shangguan Jinghong, treats women - When I began reading FWQC, I thought Jinghong was an absolute arse. Although I liked him a lot more as I read the book, and I understood the reasons behind some of his actions as the story unfolded, there are still some things I found uncomfortable:
        • Spoiler

There are MULTIPLE points in the book where Jinghong rapes Qiao Chu. On the night of their wedding, Jinghong forced himself on her despite her protests. And again, on another occasion, when they were in a tent at the hunting ground, he again forcefully has s*x with her. Even though she is his wife, it is still definitely NOT ok for anyone to force someone to have s*x with them without their consent.

          [collapse]
        • He's also somewhat of a womaniser. In total, I think there are like seven women who are in love with Shangguan Jinghong:
          Spoiler

          1. Qiao Chu (our female MC, who becomes his concubine), 2. Shen Qingling (the so-called "white moonlight", his childhood friend and first love), 3. Lang Linling (another childhood friend and his main wife), 4. Qiao Mei (Qiao Chu's older sister and also his elder brother and crown prince Jinghao's wife), 5. Bi Shui (his maid and female attendant), 6. Zhuang Fei (his father's concubine and also the concubine who "adopted" and took care of him when he was younger - it's wrong on so many levels, but this isn't his fault tho), and 7. Cai Ning (a princess from a neighbouring country called Xixia, whom he thankfully does not get involved with). Although there are reasons behind why he has relationships with these women, I still find it frustrating how all these women are all capable and intelligent women, yet they fall s*upidly head over heels in love with Jinghong and would give up and sacrifice everything for him. Plus, the guy just CANNOT make up his mind about which woman to be with. At one point in the story, when he realises he loves both Qingling and Qiao Chu, he actually says, "Why can't I have both???" I mean, I get that this was imperial China where society was patriarchal and men had multiple wives, but c'mon bro. You're a fictional male character written by an author living in the twenty-first century. I expect better.

          [collapse]
    • The amount of MISUNDERSTANDINGS. Now, I get that misunderstandings and
      Spoiler

      mistaken identities

      [collapse]
are a popular trope in novels, but the level of it in FWQC is just off-the-charts.
        • Spoiler

When the Crown Prince was a child, he went to Beidi, the place where Qiao Chu is from, and almost died. He was rescued by Qiao Chu, but mistook her for her sister, Qiao Mei, because Qiao Chu was forced by her evil stepmother and sister to wear a mask and disguise herself as Qiao Mei. This led to the prince promising to marry Qiao Mei in future.

          [collapse]
        • Spoiler

Due to the events in Beidi, both Qiao Mei and Qiao Chu fell in love with the Crown Prince. But surprise surprise, there's another layer of misunderstanding and mistaken identity here, because the "Crown Prince" who went to Beidi was actually Shangguan Jinghong, who looks exactly like his brother Jinghao. The King was worried about the safety of his favourite son, the Crown Prince, and thus sent Jinghong, who was the disfavoured son, in his stead.

          [collapse]
        • Spoiler

And guess what? The whole reason why Jinghong looks like Jinghao is because their mothers were sisters who looked exactly like each other. And the reason why Jinghong is disfavoured while Jinghao is favoured by the King is because of another misunderstanding and case of mistaken identity...

          [collapse]
        • Spoiler

When the King was younger, he was also fatally injured and rescued by a girl, whom he fell in love with. The girl was Jinghong's mother, Buxie, but when he woke up, he mistook Buxie's sister Fangfei as Buxie. The King later had a child with Buxie because he mistook her for Fangfei, and due to various schemes and events that happened in between, the King hated Buxie and her child, Jinghong, while favouring Jinghao, the son of Fangfei.

          [collapse]
        • Spoiler

Due to his and Buxie's status, Jinghong was pretty lonely and ostracised as a child in the palace. He always longed for the companionship of Shen Qingling,
who was friends with Jinghao. Qiao Chu, who visited the palace, pretended to be Qingling and practiced shooting arrows with him to encourage him. After Buxie died, the person who stayed by his side and comforted and accompanied him was also Qiao Chu's "spirit" who went into Qingling's body. All these led Jinghong to fall in love with Qingling, not realising that the person who was by his side all this while was actually Qiao Chu.

          [collapse]
        • There are misunderstandings and mistaken identities even in the first and third lives (the one that Hai Lan and Qin Ge belonged to), which in turn affected the second life (i.e. the one with Qiao Chu and Jinghong, whom, in case you haven't realised, are Hai Lan and Qin Ge respectively. (I didn't spoiler tag this, because it should be fairly obvious and is also kinda revealed in the blurb itself.) It's really really complex, but I'll just leave it at that and let you read the novel for yourself to find out.
  • The ending - It's a happy ending, but I feel as though after reading close to 500 chapters, I would want a better, more satisfying payoff. The side stories do expand the story and give you a little more info about
    Spoiler

    their son, Shangguan Min

    [collapse]
    .
All in all, in spite of its flaws, I still love this story a lot and definitely recommend you to go read it. If not for the above-mentioned issues that I didn't quite like, it would be a 5/5. <<less

As expected of the author, very complex story more complex than the other novels written by her.. the angst is just on another level... but the ML is least likable among the three ML's of the author's other chinese historical novels. but love the writing, the depth of characters is just awesome.

  • I personally like the FL of chuan qi more, but the FL of this novel is also very interesting more wise than nian xuanji of love in another life (which in my opinion is a bit s*upid and impulsive).

It was a novel to behold with alot if heart renching episodes of one after the.

... more>> Hai lan loving Qin Ge for three years but finding out the falsehood at his death that all was lies.

The patience for her was to protect the Gu in her what miserable her when she thought back at how foolish she had taken his ex Vail in exchange for her hair pin for him to remember her, despair was the only thing left yet still travelled back in time to Change his fate. Yet again to be crashed by fate because he already had someone he loved. She tried to accept the fate of being not loved as his concubine but his care made her want more. Almost 3/4 was about her loving him and accepting not being loved by him.

About ML I would say a lust Budda yet I have pitty for him because when he was Qin Gu, he was looking for FL but because of Lin Yu dreams about the past, he missed and made Hai lan a substitute. And when he was jinghong, took Qing ling as the one who believed him when his father didn't robing Qioa Chu trust as children.i would say pity because his stepmom forced him to be his first woman giving birth to Xiao jui yet he refused to acknowledge him because he as young boy couldn't come to terms of birthing a child from his stepmom due to her affairs with both her cousin and his father and him.

I would say lust because he as a budda would at least retain some restraint towards sensual pleasure as he had towards meat but no, he had women before accepting his love for Fl. I really hated his indifference of not trusting her with his plans before being put to action always coming down as convectional rainfall to FL and being hurt because she was always one of those being hurt after the plans took actions.

strictly speaking I have nothing good about him to say because as a budda, he had alot of affairs in both Qin Get and Jinghong lifetimes.

About the novel I would say it was 5/5 angast with alot of depair coming from almost all females in the novel.

So if you are not scared of tear-jerking scenarios then come and read.

By the way we get to see Long fei and Zhu Qi son and their adopted daughter's sweet endings because Lin lang had alot of bitterness towards wushuang's love to xiaotong.

But all in all it's a good bitter novel so come have a wash in your eyes. <<less
