Anna, a saint who had worked hard despite being looked down upon for being an orphan, was chosen to be the prince’s fiancée, bypassing the other saint Noemi who was loved by everyone. As a result, the people around her became even colder towards her.

In the midst of this, the bishop asked Anna to undergo the “sacred ritual” to protect the country.

The sacred ritual is a ceremony where one is placed alive in a coffin and enshrined. Although Anna was reluctant, she eventually gave in to the pressure from those around her.

While inside the coffin during the ceremony, Anna heard the true reason why it was being performed and strongly regretted her choice.

Then a spirit appeared and offered to help her escape. With the spirit’s power, Anna fled and returned to the church in a different form.

This story is about a young Saintess who was first chosen to marry a Prince and then forced into a human sacrifice ritual. She escapes with the aid of a spirit once she learns why she was chosen as a sacrifice and then returns to the Church to enact her revenge.

Spoiler

She was chosen as the human sacrifice as a way for the Prince to shift his marriage partner from her to the other Saintess. The Bishop agrees as it was more beneficial for the other woman to become the Prince's wife. At least I'm assuming that as there is nothing to explain why one would be better than the other.

And it's not really much of a revenge. She just returns and acts like a spoiled noble which causes the other Saintess to self-destruct. I mean, there is "abandoning" the injured prince but she just tells someone else to go heal him while she delegates tasks to other healers.

There isn't so much character development in this as it is character reversal. The MC goes from being a kind-hearted woman to someone who acts selfishly. She also acts surprised when someone she knew from before dislikes the new her.

Spoiler

This doesn't last very long. He quickly figures out that she's the supposedly dead Saintess after she acts like a normal human being during a fire.

For a short story, a lot happens, but there really isn't much to hook a person's attention for long. It kind of reads like a story that would have been spread out throughout several magazine issues. It's alright but nothing spectacular. <<less

This story was quite okay but nothing remarkable. I love the growth of the characters though. They weren't anything perfect but they felt more realistic that way.

MC changed from a gullible to a vain woman and changed again to a kind woman who lived a laid-back life which actually suited her. ML was quite kind from the beginning till the end but he's a bit judgmental towards the vain MC. However, he quickly apologized for his harsh words.

As for the plot itself, it wasn't anything new. The pace was quite... more>> fast so it lacked so many details. The way MC took revenge was also far from interesting. She did nothing to people who harmed her other than giving them a cold shoulder. There's no regret or guilt from those people to the previous Anna until the end so her revenge felt meaningless. <<less

Neglected and abused saint decides to live a different life.

Good:

  • there's actual character progression. As the title implies, the obedient (and timid, low self-esteem) saint tries to live the villainess life. The story progresses further than the title, and it is not a simple character arc
Bad:

  • These are 27 short chapters, and it feels like a lot is left undone. At times, a chapter feels like a plot outline turned into prose. Ultimately, this is a good problem: there is enough of a "hook" that I wanted more. Unfortunately, this also leads to..
Ugly:

  • The "growth" of the character seems very lopsided, and kind of comes out of nowhere.
    Spoiler

As best as I can recall, there are no specific numbers indicating how much time passes during the saint-villlainess turn, but it doesn't feel like a long time. And yet! The saint returns to the church with full command of the villainess persona. The sudden change without a "training arc" of sorts felt very jarring. In a class-based society, surely it would take some time for a non-nobility to convincingly carry herself as a noble, yes?
