It's a good concept but the author's writing just feels too juvenile. It's a martial arts story taking place in contemporary China, which is pretty fresh, but the handling of the "underground forces" and the power structure that the protagonist was originally a part of was too sloppy for me. It didn't feel planned out, nor did it seem to serve any purpose other than to fill in the gaps in the reader's knowledge of the current setting. Another thing that annoys me about the writing is how the author... more>> seems to describe the cause for various events/chance encounters as "obvious" when they aren't the most logical or realistic way in which these encounters would play out. It creates a stifling feeling for me as a reader, which is why I'm dropping.

Oh, and that's just for volume one, because volume two going forward is its own story. Volume one is irrelevant upon the protagonist's reincarnation. Volume 2 is just the beginning to a generic power trip story in which the main character apparently didn't learn sh*t from his original life. None of his values, traumas, or lessons learned from hardship remain. You might as well go read Martial World.

I don't recommend the novel at all, but if you must read it, skip volume 1 if you want a reincarnation Wuxia or drop after volume 1 if you want a short story about male black widow (marvel) with martial art elements on the side. <<less

I am disappointed so disappointed. I can't imagine that the same author who wrote many other great novels could write this crap.

I can't believe this novel was written by I EAT TOMATOES. In my opinion, this novel is a blemish and a dark spot among author's other works.

The novel starts of amazing when it talks about the 'before the transmigration' situation but the second part of the novel just plain sucks.

Characters are 2-d, enemies are ret*rded and arrogant and jealous. People don't think about consequences before acting. So many situation... more>> are there which makes you question how these people/group of people/tribes survived till now.

This novel is like every other generic second rate cultivation novel. Wastage of time.

Having a rating of 4 star is too over-rated.

I can say with 100% confidence that for anyone who has read the author's other works, will find this novel not up to par. <<less

The Nine Cauldrons starts by getting readers invested in a young Master's wuxia journey, to become a Grandmaster. All within a modern setting. And sure that remains the essence of the story, but everything else changes. The setting change feels like another world, when it's implied to be an incomprehensible version of Ancient Times. The MC just remains as some martial arts nut, who's tunnel-visioned into walking down his own martial path.

Which would honestly make him a boring character, until he eventually stops focusing so much on raising his cultivation... more>> level and starts pioneering a new field of martial arts, with his own Sect. It helps bring things back down to earth and guiding it away from the Xianxia path, the story was going down, once his cultivation reached the Innate Realm. Unfortunately it's still plagued with the usual issues of incessant repetition to pad out the word count and most female characters being useless. I'm just glad it didn't overstay it's welcome, like so many 1, 500+ chapter Chinese WN. <<less

Just finished reading the book. This is a good novel and I enjoy very much reading it. Prologue is quite long if we compare to other novels. At first it was boring but to end of the first book I was like ''why it ended why ???''. It show people, how MC value his family and friends imo.

Anyway I found story plot and story development great. He value of his family and always try to protect them like all protagonists. There is a big drama in the early story and... more>> ninja onions attack me tbh. His cultivation speed fast if we compare to other people and quite unique. The world is not so big but not that small. Like I said earlier plot is great and always steady pace and there is almost none plot armor.

End of the story upset me tbh. I was expecting something big when he try to breakthrough the last realm but that didn't happen. It was quite boring like I said. There is some things that not disclosed.

Overall, great prologue and story but bad end of the story.

Translation on haitus... wait a bit before you pick this up to see if more chapters are actually inbound. With that being said...:

Great novel! Good character growth, interesting story, mature character, and all the hallmarks of a good wuxia novel. I spent a few days looking for a new novel to read and this is it!

The story is pretty good, i'd even give it a 5 stars if it wasn't for the *imo* bad romance.

Every Arc is important and I enjoyed most of it, even tho there were some boring parts.. *Im looking at you Vermillion Tiger Roar*

The MCs cultivation is definitely the strongest point in this novel, he doesn't cultivate the same way the rest of the people from V2 + cultivate, he evolves the technique from V1 and makes his own style which gives him the edge in future battles.

The Romance tho.. Oooh... more>> boy.

Spoiler

His wife from volume 1 / his world dies and is mentioned throughout the novel as if foreshadowing that he reincarnated with his wife just that he hasn't met her yet. *Bullf*cking shit* This wife btw, is the only one he ever loved, the other 2 he married / almost married were because of his family or just purely forced. His 2nd love / wife, Qing'er died during a battle arc and thank f*cking god. He mentioned many times that she wasn't his type and even said to his cousin that he should pursue her since his cousin loved her. The only moment of love came when she died like an idiot during the battle scene. His 3rd wife / love, Li Yun or w/e, is basically a maid. She forced herself on his boat when he was traveling so he couldn't just kick her outta there and kill her *even it was definitely a thought* she just cooked for him during his training time and talked to beasts, he eventually married her when she almost died *again, like a fking idiot, wtf was she doing so close to experts any fking way?*
And oh, by the way, the only reason he took an interest in her is because she looks exactly like Cat *his 1st wife and imo best wife* and even has a similar aura to her. The glorified maid was definitely better than Daddies little princess Qing'er but both of them don't compare to Cat.
The novel still hasn't finished but its only 200 chapters away, so it isn't likely that she'll come back.
*Yup, spoilers say he has children with Li Yun and Cat never appears*
Sigh, the author is a lil b for not bringing back Cat even after all that god damn foreshadowing and mentioning of Cat throughout every 10 chapters.

Still over all a great novel. <<less

One of my favourite novels that I still follow. Like most people, my first CN was from IEatTomatoes himself, Coiling Dragon, translated by the great Ren. At first, when I read TNC, it was slow and boring. I dropped it for a while, but after a while, I had nothing else to read, so I went back to it since I loved Coiling Dragon's early chapters. I will say, the first volume is a bit slow. I wouldn't go as far as other reviewers to say it's irrelevant, but it... more>> got better around chapter 10 or so. Potentially, you could skip volume 1 if you want so you can directly go to the 'actual' story. However, one of my biggest pet peeves in the past was when authors would have a reincarnated character, but never reference their past or have the character follow their ideologies or actions from his/her past life, especially since his/her personality was fully-formed in the past life as an adult.

The pros of this novel outweigh the potential cons: the character is well-developed and actually rather mature; the fighting scenes are decent with the details; the cultivation system is unique; and the story and plot is well-paced. My biggest con is in relation to my pet peeve. The main character was a former world-class assassin who was orphaned at a young age. He never had parents. In this life, he decided to almost discard his past as an assassin and follows the Asian ideology of being a filial son. This made me roll my eyes so hard. The MC was a fully-grown adult man in his past life. By all means, I think he should be respectful and grateful to the couple in this current world who raised him, but for me, if I reincarnated into a new world, I'm still me. I can be grateful and helpful to the people who raised me without sacrificing my own happiness and for me, I find it hard to believe that someone who has fully formed their own personality and beliefs can easily be lectured by his new parents. But other than that, this book is well-written and interesting, so definitely give it a shot when you have time. <<less

Personally I find that this is the best of IET's translated works. It is much shorter, however instead of making it fell rushed, that removes all of the filler put in most of his novels. It also has much better characters in every aspect. While the main character cares about his family they don't feel like a burden that holds him back, and the reader can actually get attached to them. The MC is similar in that regard, he feels human and never gets to the point of being 20... more>> million years old and able to destroy planets with a glance or any of that ridiculously inflated nonsense. <<less

I’ve read coiling dragon early on and really enjoyed it, then I have changed the genres I read and when I eventually run out of er gen novels to read I got a recommendation for nine cauldrons by a good friend.

And I can’t describe how disappointed and dissatisfied I am with this novel. Since I have read CD too many blue moons ago, I can not remember if it was really as good as I imagine it to be now, but I am doubting myself more, thinking that I might... more>> have been to inexperienced at the time.

But let me warn you, this new MC is extremely poorly written. The whole concept is poorly written.

There is no tangible size to the world.

Spoiler

There is a northern continent, no one knew about, all they had to do was travel to the north long enough, like a few days and you would reach it... , as an emptiness expert, would u not be curious? It is the equivalent of living in 2022 and not having explored your own planet...

[collapse]

the cultivation system is not explained until the very end, u get confronted with terms without any feeling to them. The MC just steamrolls through the first few hundred chapters cause plot armor.

The next realm experts are portrayed as epic gods but when MC reaches that level he isn’t as strong. Author is nerfing realms as soon as the MC reaches them.

The cultivation is extremely weak, at first it was about personal power instead of the power of many. That was the authors goal.

But as soon as the MC got powerful enough, the author put more focus on big armys composed of first rated warriors (which can be killed with a slap from emptiness realm experts)...

Spoiler

Also his cauldron is absolutely worthless. He has basically no cheat item, at least with a cheat item you can put the plot armor on the cheat item, but in this case the plot armor is not disguised at all, since the MC is wearing it in broad daylight.

[collapse]

In a nutshell, to me it feels like this:

Imagine you are a child, then you fly over to a different country, alone, and u live there for one day. And now u start telling people how they can live better. And lets not lie to ourselves, the MC is a kid. 30 years my ass.

Also only read if u enjoy beta mcs.
Later on he will be assasinated many times and he isn’t seeking revenge.

Spoiler

1 Example out of 1000

He meets a projection of Emperor Yu, basically an idiot emperor who cant set up a proper inheritance ground and almost got MC killed, he asks MC to take care of his clan and in return he gets 2 useless treasures. Like legit useless. Then MC is hunted by the descendants of Emperor Yu for taking the inheritance. And to this point many hundred chapters later MC still has a favorable impression of The descendants of Emperor Yu. Only when he got assassinated a second time did he start getting dissatisfied with them. But don’t worry dear beta male readers, he isn’t gonna do anything actively about it.

[collapse]

all in all, don’t read this novel

but then I am not a saint, I am only writing this review to give my poor soul an outlet and release my pent up dark emotions that accumulated after wasting so much time on this book. Around chapter 100, I wanted to drop it, but due to a lack of alternatives I skipped a few unbearably cringe chapters and kept on reading

but chapter 555 is the last straw

Go ahead and read this novel, so that I am not the only one to waste months on this book ;) <<less

Story is alright. Its strongest point is the combat. There's only been a couple of punch parries. Next is the suppressed, compared to xianxia, power levels. People can't suddenly fly or act like magic cannons after a couple of tier upgrades.

Its weakest point is the world building. It is like a stream, that you constantly have to step over. It's more like a puddle since it's always the same water. Actually, if it's like a stream, then it's a stream of piss in the face that after nearly 7 complete... more>> volumes just leaves you with wet socks.

Even with anemic world building, it still manages to be unclear. I'm not sure if this is a translation or a planning problem (probably planning since the volume 1 to 2 transition is abrupt and doesn't start a pattern for future volumes). For example, 9 continents become counties become prefectures. The only thing the work seems absolutely sure of is that spears are longer than swords, and you will read about it every chapter for multiple volumes.

As the work continues, more and more internal thoughts are set off in quotes during dialogue. It becomes a challenge to guess if people are actually talking or just saying sh*t they shouldn't be saying casually. <<less

Another novel where the protagonist cannot take a step without creating problems and being persecuted.
The worst thing is that the protagonist was an assassin who was trained since he was a child, he is described as cold-blooded, intelligent and calculating.
But when you read it, it's not like that at all, he's just another hot-blooded, emotional protagonist who does things without thinking about the consequences and then blames himself when a loved one dies because of the consequences of what he's done.
And it's always like that, he never... more>> learns from his mistakes.
Disappointing novel, it seems that the Author cannot create a story where the protagonist does not need to be persecuted all the time, he always has to create a new problem wherever he goes just to continue the story.

Spoiler

An example, one of the 8 strongest sects on the continents did something that ended up leaving his father crippled and his uncle dead, normal for the protagonist to want revenge, however, he is still very weak compared to the masters of that sect.
The protagonist is described with a monstrous talent and in 5 to 10 years he would be able to reach a level of strength that allowed him to take revenge and be able to bear the consequences, it was just for him to endure and focus on his training.
what did he do? his eyes were red from so much anger, he took his gun, disguised himself and went out in search of revenge... Result? this sect found out who he was, caused a huge fight and the girl who was in love with him died, many friends from the army he was part of also died and he blamed himself for it, he had to flee so he wouldn't be killed by this strong sect.
The story continues with him running away to another place in disguise and was managing to do well, until he decides to get into a fight with another of the 8 major sects because of a strange old man he met on a trip for a few days, they found out it was him and informed the another sect that was behind him and set an ambush.
I dropped the novel at that moment because I couldn't take it anymore.

[collapse]

If you want a novel where the protagonist is smart and thinks about the consequences of what he's going to do, then this novel is definitely not for you.
Now, if you don't care about a protagonist who only acts on the emotion and heat of the moment and doesn't think about the consequences, he has to keep running from one side to another, he doesn't learn from his mistakes and he has to be saved by the plot armor to every moment, so you can read as you wish.

For me it was a disappointment and a waste of time to have read 257 chapters of this novel.

I'm giving it 1 star because I don't think there's a way to rate it lower.

This novel unlike desolate era, another book of the same author, did not overstay it’s welcome with endless power ranks but cut it short and sweet. Entertaining for what it was, it did a great job with action. Overall it’s much better then it’s predecessor in execution and quality.

When I first started reading the novel, I thought that I had read the wrong novel and got impatient as I read the first 15-20 chapters. Turned out, it was worth it. The overall plot is nicely considered and IET did not overextend the novel with filler chapters. The mindset of characters are heavily influenced by traditional Chinese culture so do read with an open mind or else you'll just end up getting disappointed or complaining about the decisions of the characters. The romance department of the novel is also... more>> not disappointing imo because it is not overbearing. I also like the fact that the MC is made with characteristic flaws and even comes to terms with his flaws and decisions. However, the fact that the MC is a character with flaws is also probably one of the major reasons why some reviewers would rate this novel with a star or two (because MC should be a perfect heroic human being amirite *roll eyes*) <<less

Okay so first of all, I really like this novel. However I, myself, love stories with love in it or a really good romance and since this novel had the romance tag I originally thought it would be really nice. BUT here is the thing what they did.

Spoiler

At the end of book 5 around 240 chapters or so the first love interest in the story was killed right after she opened mc's cold hearth from his past live and the MC decided to settle down and marry her and shit, stuff was looking really good BUT NO happy things shouldn't exist! That was all a death flag that they raised. Because she was shot and she died. I really liked the way the relationship was going they even had a "date" but no. She had to die and I don't really like it and if not for heshefell saying there is a second interest I would have dropped it because her dying literally contributed to nothing. Only MC realising how important she was that's it. No rage or anything just nothing. I haven't read after it happened but if MC does not kill everyone related to the people killing her I would be really dissapointed

Edit: Okay I have to retake some words because the first love interest did contribute to something as seen in the latest chapter
