The Male Lead’s Villainess Stepmother

Description

Yan Shuyu, a big fan of all sorts of cliche CEO novels, had transmigrated into a book —

In the novel, the wealthy CEO male lead has a villainous stepmother. She put up a front of being nice and tender to him, when in fact she was bullying the male lead with her son. After she had successfully driven the male lead and his father apart, her ambition continued to grow as she attempted to take away the inheritance from the male lead. In the second half of the book, the truth came out — that the father had no feelings for her whatsoever but was merely using the two of them to hone his son’s character. In the end, both the stepmom and her son were sent to jail by the male lead after he took over the family business.

Yan Shuyu transmigrated and became the well-hated villainous stepmother, but she had transmigrated to the time before everything happened, and the male lead was still a foolish child. Only a fool would want to become the stepmother of a foolish child. Yan Shuyu took a longing look at her “assigned husband”, who was pretty much like the Sleeping Beauty, before she quickly packed up and made a run for it.

After that, Yan Shuyu checked out her $250 remaining on her card. She turned to look at her son, who was clinging onto her leg and asking for milk. She wanted to look up at the sky and howl. Is it too late to go back to become the male lead’s whetstone?

Well... the story in itself isn't too bad not the best I read nor the worst the story develops pretty much logically according to its settings there might be some cliché scenes or but it's ok. my main problem is with the MC personality She is s*upid, spoiled, vain, lazy, superficial, Irresponsible, selfish, narcissistic and unfaithful

Spoiler

She broke up with her boyfriend whom she was supposed to be in love with for so long because was ambitious. He wanted to go to a first-line city to have a go at a career and hoped that his girlfriend would accompany him up North while she only wants to live off of her parents

She doesn't have much feelings for her instant son and that is for sure it's hard to accept being a mother one night but the reason she chose to accept him is that she found in her memories that he can be brilliant in the future so if she raises him properly she will be able leech off him and start her life with some young boy later

The MC ONLY care about appearance she even accepted the CEO kid after 2 meetings because he is better looking than her blood related kid according to her.

She spends more time on her make up than taking care of the kid, over that she doesn't even feel sorry or that she neglects him and justifies her Irresponsibility with the (2, 3, 4, 5 years old, I don't know exactly how old he is as I got confused with story) child because of how mature he is. Let me tell you something of personal experience, there is NO MATURE child (unless he is also a Transmigrator or on the same level of Jesus). It is very dangerous to leave children alone especially smart ones because they have more curiosity than normal one and you don't really know what they are capable of (MY smart and obedient little brother almost set our whole house on fire when left alone, luckily it ended with just material damage)

[collapse]

This MC might not be the worse one out there, but I think she more suitable for a supporting role, on the other hand the original owner of the body was more suitable to be MC. A single mother whose husband died early struggling to raise her child is a good MC materiel. The writer could have also used Transmigrator character with a little more depth or some good traits. She doesn't doesn't need to be perfect because perfect means false and only looks are not enough to make an MC (EVERY MC in CN novels is most beautiful

Edit:
I don't like the FL at all, she is just a sl*t. Nor do I like the ML, he is c***
Spoiler

The MC has long been Transmigrated so this is her REAL child but she lost her memories after one night s*x with ML... WOW!!! My first time hearing of someone losing memories after s*x, the world is big

Her husband is also alive... another WOW!!!

I won't spent lot of time doing a review, as you can see, other people already share the same point, so I would be only repeating.

Spoiler

I saw people talking about how she found a work, which she did, but it didn't do any good at all.

[collapse]

I just hated the MC so much that I couldn't enjoy ANYTHING. It is not because she's an d*mb b1tc* and it's "different" that the novel will be good.

Don't get me wrong, there IS a way to write a GOOD and ENJOYABLE character with these personality traits, but this DIDN'T happen here.

I just wanted to see her having a bad end as a consequence to all the things she did and maybe have a certain type of retribution... But I don't believe it will happen and I have no more patience to keep reading this thing here.

*The translator is good, but I can't bring myself to rate this higher. <<less

it is a fun novel and I sincerely believe that MC grows in the course of history.
it's a very nice story
If you like the stories of the day to day, relationship between mother and son and how the ML does not give up, do not hesitate
Spoiler

Something that perhaps bothered me a bit is that it is never explained or understood how, when or why ML falls in love (to the point of obsessiveness).
the case of her x and as it relates to the son of ML is also very good.

[collapse]
Anyway, I hope the complete translation can be finished

Plot is average. Romcom novel about poor FMC and rich ML with their cute small kids.

Translation is quite good with some small errors which are negligible. Chapters are short as result from splitting each chapters from OG novel.

Story writing. It bothers me so much that author decided to explain things over and over again, like the fact that FMC's kid as whetstone for ML's child growth, or that FMC is a lazy and has positive mindset/disposition. Beside that, FMC's inner thoughts are too many and long, they're quite repetitive too.

Characters.... more>> FMC is s*upid, vain, easily swayed, happy-go-lucky naive girl. At least, she tries her best to be responsible towards her kid. ML is just rich ML
Spoiler

The fact that he's using OG FMC's kid as whetstone for his kid's growth, marry OG FMC for 20 years without kid (s) of their own, and then doesn't concern about her and he kid after her downfall is shady, heartless, and manipulative ML. And when I read other review that FMC is the OG FMC or rebirth, I just can't see any positive light from ML. I know that OG FMC had her own faults too, both FMC and ML is bad characters

The first time I started this novel, I quit early on when I realized the personality of the main character, she is lazy, vain and not serious about raising the child but the second time around I struggled through few more chapter and realized that while this definitely is not a pleasing character trait it definitely is a much more realistic take on childcare novel.

Apart from the story, the novel in itself is written in a roundabout manner which obviously is frustrating since a dialogue taking place would cut and... more>> there would be 2 more paragraphs of filler. This makes the progress a little sluggish but considering that I had the patience to catch up to the translation says a lot since I am not much of a patient person

Since it is on the shorter end for now and not much has transpired between the two main characters I can't talk much more in-depth of the story and its direction.

Maybe I will think about reading it once it's completed <<less

Slightly different setting compared to your standard city romance.

Spoiler

Also the reveal/twist of the dad being alive at the end while somewhat awkward or out of place, feels fresh to a certain degree; before reverting back to a generic ending that feels like instant gratification but too predictable in the epilogue.

That said, objectively wasted potential to explore and expand on some of the characters (especially in the latter half), and due to how smoothly everything works out in the end, somewhat fanciful/detached from reality, which one would expect to be if not ungratifying (Murphy's Law), at least somewhat melancholic.

I’m refraining from rating it as I haven’t finished the novel yet.

So far, we meet the MC, Yan Shuyu, who transmigrated into a novel.

Spoiler

She is a spoiled nouveau riche child—who was seriously pampered by her parents.

[collapse]

Though I don’t like her personality as much, it’s more realistic than some of the other cliche bedding CEO novels I’ve read. I just hope that as the story progresses, YS personality will develop as well.

At the start:

Spoiler

YS wakes up and finds out that she had s*xual interc**rse with someone and it wasn’t a dream. She isn’t a virg*n and even if she assumed that it was her ex-boyfriend or even a dream, she actively participated in the act. Some reviews call it r*pe, and I don’t want to put my opinion in there. (It is whatever you think it is.)

She then proceeds to run away as she realizes that she’s in a novel and in the body of a cannon fodder.

[collapse]

You get to meet her son, Zhang Yuanjia, who you’ll feel for. His circumstances is actually quite pitiful.

Spoiler

He’s only 4 years and I think 4 months old, when we’re introduced to him. He acts very mature for his age, trying to be self sufficient and not rely on his mother as much—not want to be a bother to her.

[collapse]

Many times, you’ll question the FML and her decisions but logically thinking about it, it’s a more genuine decision.

Spoiler

YS was a single child, she doesn’t know how to care for others. Not to mention that she hasn’t taken care of any younger kids and doesn’t have any maternal instincts, she is unable to see the child’s needs—being more selfish. When she thinks for the well-being of the two of them, it’s visibly discernible that she puts herself first before ‘her’ child.

[collapse]

You’ll often gets inserts of the male lead, Zhou Qinghe, who is... as you have guess: a cold-and-calculating-single-father-who-is-the-CEO-of-a-major-empire.

There’s not much information on the man, other than the description and inserts from the novel that YS remembers, but so far, he seems like the typical aloof CEO type.

Back to the story:

Spoiler

Since YS arrived 2 years before the start of her and her son’s downfall, she wants to change their fate. She quits the job on the spot and tries to save as much money as she can. YS asks for deposit back from the place she’s renting and the kindergarten place, but after hearing what the original had done, she has no choice but to stick with it for now.

The next event setter annoys me but reasoning that YS isn’t omniscient, it barely passes. She receives a call from her old workplace with an irrefutable offer (for someone who has been spoiled and in dire need of money). She instantly accepts and sets a date with her old manager—without even being slightly suspicious of why the rule would change for her all of a sudden.

[collapse]

The free to read translation (not on patreon) is only at chapter 27–where YS has gotten a job at a restaurant and has set the date to go and receive her paycheck at the hotel.

———

Albeit the MC’s personality isn’t very likable, the storyline isn’t so bad (kinda mediocre) and can pass as a read whenever you’re bored or have nothing else to read. I look forward to more scenes with the ML of the story, her son having more screen time, and more interactions from YS and YZJ. <<less

2/10, honestly the FL character was quite interesting, she is vain and princessy. However, I felt like the author wasted her character... she is eventually put into a cowardly dumb princessy FL which is so annoying. Also, the relationship between ML and FL is ridiculous. As one night stand with not much bg info then he just decides to pursue her.. idk and also the narrative makes it so hard to focus and read cause one chapter has probably 3-to 4 dialogues the rest is all the thought in MC's... more>> head like so much narration and little interaction. <<less

Meh I don't know about this one. The story kind of interesting. I can vouch for it. To be honest, I read it until chapter 257. I guess I couldn't handle it anymore. So like I said, the story is very interesting. I was hoping for more plotline, and faster romance. The romance is not slow, but very slow. FL is dumb, if I must say. I found the FL annoying until the end because she mainly keeps trying to avoid the ML. Like she knew what would happen, she... more>> guessed it, but she still do it. Very s*upid of her. I try to understand her due to her sudden situation of becoming a mother, but it's pointless.

The only charm that she have is being beautiful and talented in musical instruments. The author should be able do a good job if they try to bring her talent in musical instruments up front. Her talent seems to be a unimportant thing that shouldn't even talked about. Also, she quite obsessed with original story, kind of annoying.

It is very frustrating because this novel has a lot of potential. It ruined because of FL's personality. <<less

All I have to say is the FL is irritatingly naíve and clueless that one has to wonder if she has a brain at all with how easily manipulated she is. She a two-dimensional, immature and shallow character and after the 50th chapter, her “shenanigans” got old really quickly. This whole novel is one big pointless eye-roll.

I can see why this had bad reviews. However, although the MC's personality is not so desirable, what bothered me more was her s*upidity:

Spoiler

She kept repeating that she didn't want her and her son to become the villainous stepmother and stepbrother, like in the original novel. But yet she seemed proud that she was familiar with tropes of the genre of novels she reads, but for some reason couldn't figure out that as long as she doesn't go the same route as the stepmother in the novel she can change both her and her son's fate? The villainous stepmother in the novel goaded and trained her son to be just as villainous, yet she herself was not that way and was kind to the male lead; so why the HECK would she assume she would end up like in the novels plotline? She was too s*upid and I can see why her personality and character made people disappointed and give bad reviews.

[collapse]
(My first time using the spoiler tab so let's see)

Anyway, this was unfortunately not a very good main character because her thought process (inner dialogue) made you wonder why was she so unconcientious, vain, and dumb? So leaves nothing to be desired. I give this a 2 1/2 stars. <<less

I don't usually comment, but here goes.

The FL is just plain annoying, she is immature, irresponsible, narcissistic and s*upid. I even understand that because she was spoiled by her parents she has no sense of the world, but I expected the author to create situations that would make her fall into reality, that would help her growth, thus making a smarter and more responsible character, but this doesn `t happen.

I know that being a mother is not every woman's desire, and fl's case is even more delicate since she had... more>> a child overnight. But even so, I expected her to develop a certain affection for the boy, and even if she doesn't have the excessive care of a mother, she would have the normal care of an adult towards a child.

Anyway, too irritating, this work took me out of seriousness. <<less

I think this is a relatively simple read. It's not one of the best romance or transmigration novel, but I do find it funny xD.

Spoiler

Yan Shuyu, our FL, is a bit of a complex character. She thinks but not too deeply, she definitely thinks she's so smart and had figured everything out so she's confident all the time, which is probably why she acts so shameless XD. BUT, it is that same shamelessness of hers that probably got her to where she is right now, which is definitely inside our MLs arms as he planned xD.

Zhou Qinhe, the big boss, is a manipulative ML. I'd say he has a lot of potential to be a yandere if only this was a more serious novel. But as I've said, the story is pretty simple and a bit predictable, and the characters' chemistry isn't all that hard to see. There are no other love interests for both FL and ml, at least not too serious ones that adds more drama to the story.

There was almost one for the ML, our original ML which is our baby Zhou Yi, his mother appeared at some point of the story. But she didn't really stayed long enough to be called as a rival or anything.

For our FL, her ex-husband actually turns out to be alive and well. He met their son our baby Zhang Yuanjia, (but at the end he'll be named as Ye Hengjia). Unlike the baby og ML where he and his mother met but didn't actually bond with each other, baby Hengjia was actually fond with his actual father which I really think is cool.

[collapse]

If you're looking for a strong or smart female lead, this may count to some but may also not count as one to others. Physically, she's definitely not strong. I think the only strong point that she has is that she's extremely shameless. She knows that she grew up spoiled in her previous life, which is why she put herself first before others. Just like how at the start of the story, she's aware that the body she transmigrated to has a baby son, and she wouldn't let the kid die from being too poor, but she also didn't prioritize the kid's needs and wants. Fortunately, the baby grew up doing things on his own, which is impressive but also sad. But I love that as the story goes on, slowly but surely, FL started developing her motherly instincts like being worried when her son is home alone or whether she's being too hard on him about his piano lessons. She's still pretty childish despite developing this mother side of hers and she also still thinks about herself first, but I think that just makes her character a bit more realistic.

As a reader, I know what kind of main character I want, what their traits and possible strengths are. I think I speak for most that we love a strong and smart female lead that can be independent and doesn't rely on anyone but herself. And there are plenty of novels with that kind of MC, but our FL here likes to THINK that she's that kind of character, but also knows deep down that she's far from it. She's aware that her "role" in the novel isn't a good role and she knows that her place isn't to shine or to trust the others easily. She knows her weaknesses and kind of overestimates her own strengths which is where the story gets funny. As readers, we know for sure that the ML definitely manipulates the FLs choices behind the scenes, and some find that annoying, but I think that makes this novel funny.

I also love how she's so open in terms of s*xual bonds with the ML. Because that's something that's not extremely rare but also not so common in these kind if novels.

Overall, this is a good read if you have nothing else to read. I recommend this if you want to read something with no specific plot and just want to read something quickly. <<less

This one is fun to read, I had smiles most of the time.

I really like how the MC’s thought process and things that came out of her mouth are unpredictable. Let alone it amuses the ML, think this is the main point that had the readers hooked to this novel.

I also love the kids, especially her son. Probably one of the most understanding 4years old ever, if he existed. But adorable at the same time. I honestly don’t see how he’ll ever fit into the role of a main villain.

The... more>> story would be better if towards the end the author didn’t force a new plot
Spoiler

for the ex-husband and herself being the original stepmother. These I truly feel are unnecessary and too forceful. The MC character is warm, there’s no way she’ll scheme the ML and then bully a 6yo 2 years later.

[collapse]
These really does nothing for the whole story. If the intention is to help MC makes her decision, there are other ways..

And writing style towards the end changed too, more like describing events happening in a chapter. Away from the witty warm engagement between the characters. To the point I wish that the author would revisit and edit the ending.

All in all, still entertaining to read (minus the last few chapters). <<less

I ended up enjoying this novel more than expected --- to the point that I think the actual rating is a bit low --- but I also understand why the rating is low? LMFAO. Anyway! Brief summary on the premise: The FL (Yan Shuyu) transmigrates into a book she had read where the male lead has a stepmother and stepbrother who did everything in their power to steal his father's affections. Her role was the stepmother in this case! And she transmigrated right when said stepmother was seducing the protagonist's... more>> father (ML, Zhou Qinhe). Not wanting to get involved, she runs off as soon as she realized this was the case and decides to stay away from the plot completely so that she can save herself and her new son from their bad ends.

This is pretty much the general development of this novel from then on. The ML, having become interested in the runaway little seductress, starts to appear in her life. The FL, of course, is very against this at first, but slowly she begins to fall into the net and is unable to extricate herself. I found this actually pretty amusing. The novel is good in my eyes because it has a very well-structured development. The characters felt real because each one had something they wanted and they all had their own ways of doing it.

As for why I thought the novel's bad rating was not surprising, it's mostly because of the FL's character profile. She's the type of FL who is very ditzy, she's a little fool basically. She's definitely amusing, but the reason for her making it to her happy end was all based on luck. She wasn't trying hard at all. So, you can say that the plot and the surrounding characters made a red carpet for her while she did nothing but be funny. For this reason, a lot of the developments felt cheap. Especially since she never really changes in the end. I thought she would eventually come to some realization, but nope! She stays exactly the same. Ditzy, vain, and more than a little heartless.

I don't dislike her character, I thought she was charming in her own way, but the development was definitely disappointing. And the repetitiveness and inconsistencies in her train of thought (especially in the beginning) was somewhat annoying. ANYWAY, I really think the story is not bad. At least, not as bad as some of the other BG novels I've seen. The TL is also not bad. It's not the cleanest, and the fact that the chapters are cut so short makes it a little bit frustrating to navigate, but its readable (actually, the MTL is readable as well, I ended up checking it out on the side, so yeah, no reason not to give it a shot~)

RATING: 3.8/5

This is a not-bad novel in my book. Pretty good for a casual read~ I wasn't expecting to enjoy it so much (which is clear from the fact that I actually finished reading the novel! Which is a rare feat for me.) <<less

First of all; great translation, minor mistakes that don't affect the flow of the story nor hinder the content of the book itself. Great work to Fringe as always.

Second; this novel is a hit or miss. You either drop it at the beginning or stick around for long enough to find it's charm. I completed this, but I understand that it's not for everyone.

Third; please bear in mind this is fiction, you should never condone the actions described in the novel nor should you romanticized them. The relationship here is... more>> for entertainment purposes only and it is not a real portrayal of a healthy relationship.

Things that I liked:

  • The children; Yuanbao and Xiao Yi are the most adorable little buns ever, their interactions are the only reason I pushed through with the beginning of the novel. Watching them cultivate their brotherhood and their self-esteem while flourishing in their family is the best.
  • The fml's best friend; the relationship between manager Yang and the FML is one of the best male-female friendship I've ever read, there is no romantic interest and they are genuinely loyal while poking fun at the other. Even the materialistic side of the FML doesn't win against her best buddy and his ambition to expand doesn't cloud his loyalty for her. 10/10
  • Watching the FML dig her own grave, over and over; it's incredibly funny reading her logic and watch helplessly as she dives head first into the traps set by the male lead and the children.
My thoughts on the story itself; the beginning of the novel is questionable to say the least, the FML starts as a spoiled, entitled, useless, narcissistic brat. There is no better way to put it. Very frustrating seeing her trying to wing everything that came her way, especially child rearing, ugh, it was so hard to read. She is indecisive, air headed at best, dumb at worst, very vain and egotistical. She is an unreliable narrator.

The ML is not any better, he is presented as the ultimate villain. He is cold, calculative and cruel enough to traumatize his son for the sake of the "perfect heir"; however that is from the point of view of the unreliable FML. However, we as audience can see very clearly that he is gaslighting her, manipulates and intimidates her into their relationship.

It takes a third of the novel just to show some progress for the FML, very creepy scenes of borderline yandere-ish behavior from the ML, and then the novel delivers on it's romantic genre.

Finally the development of the characters is done when the FML transforms in the innocent, air headed, dense, friendly bimbo, loving mother. The ML is now the wife-con, cunning, clingy, doting, patient, gentleman, strict but fair father figure. And it is all comedy from there, seeing the crazy assumptions, roundabout thinking, and straight up naive thought process of the female lead against the possessive male lead. <<less

Hmm what can I say for this novel...

It is indeed no dog blood unnecessary drama. But the story is kinda strange because I felt that MC did not had any motive to like ML. It just seem she was half assed to be with ML, but I dunno though maybe it’s because of plot hole

If you are fine with natural airhead MC, you can read this novel. Some actions of the ML is questionable (like other generic Chinese MCs). It probably boils down to preference (i felt icky about him kind off manipulating her into the relationship though). I like the plot twist at the end which kind of ties down the loose strings of the plot. Fave characters ofc is her instant son and the child ML.
