In a romance novel called “The Secret Lovers of the Academy” the male lead would often torment his fiancée–but wait, why did she cross into this world to become his fiancée, the villainess, instead of the heroine?

Louise Sweeney found the perfect solution to escape the misfortune of being the villainess: “Your Highness, I just want to tell you that we don’t have to be tied with our engagement. We weren’t even officially engaged, right?”

But what was wrong with the male lead’s reaction? To her suggestion, he replied “But our engagement wasn’t false, don’t you agree?”

It's not the worse book. The problem I have is the story is unnecessarily dragged out that it became very flat and boring after the midway point.
And the FL became annoyingly useless and become a blubbering mess when she was set up when she is usually sharp tongued and decisive. She willingly hurt the ML that cares about her but could not even say a word when she was set up and betrayed by the original FL of the story and even acted nice to her!!!

And FL is supposed... more>> to be smart but she could not figure out that ever since she had transmigrated and changed the story, she still kept expecting and was constantly surprised (all the way right up to chapter 100 something) that the characters didn't act the way they were supposed to in the original story. How can the FL be smart when she is always muddle headed and acts like a 5 year old?

No character developments, and zero world building, basically they are just described as going to the palace, theatre etc but no description whatsoever about their structures, their surroundings etc. I really don't know how far away or near the palace is to MC's house, nor anything about their country. The whole novel only focuses on the MC and the ML's romance. And the so called academy seem to have only 6 students.
This is a good read for those who likes otome game transmigration novel of a much younger audience. <<less

I saw this first as a manhwa, then comments lead me here to read the novel.

Wow this novel is satisfying, I recommend this to readers who wants to relax and breathe away from dramatic novels.

Quick Review:

  • Cliche Villainess transmigration and trying to survive, but was handled softer here.
  • WHOLESOME RELATIONSHIP / LOVE-TRIANGLE
  • Light-hearted story plot
  • From a Korean author, this must be the first time I read of a Male Lead and 2nd Male Lead not neck on neck with each other. Their love for MC was so fair.
  • Retribution for the characters was so beautiful, it makes me emotional.
    Spoiler

Especially to 2nd Lead, thank you so much Author, I'm so proud of him.

  • Have I mentioned this is a SLOW BURN romance. (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)
  • From the Korean manhwas I read, this novel is a paradise for me to breathe.
Spoiler

Cons: The few chapters to the ending/final act felt so rushed ಠ ೧ ಠ

[collapse]

Note: For me, Louise Sweeney, as a heroine might had lots of dense moments, well no it's not dense but rather in denial towards ML, Ian. She's struggling to keep Ian as her special friend and to be alive.

Louise and Ian banter of subtle romance was fun, for me too.

I called this slow burn because Louise isn't the only one juggling between Romance and Familial Love, it also goes to Ian and 2nd Lead, Simon. It's a 'step no or step yes' not destroy their friendship they care for so much.

There's nothing bad about the story, except maybe it's a bit boring. As for what's good...? Well, not much there either.

It's not very exciting, but it doesn't induce rage either. It's a barely average time pass if you're really bored.

I can't believe I finished it, but I did. At least it's done.

Now this was THOROUGHLY enjoyable. If I was to give a quick summary, it's a sweet, warm, and lovely story. I couldn't help but binge read the whole thing from 1 to 123 in just a couple days.

Villainess Fiancée seems pretty par for the course when it comes to all the villainess reincarnation stories. It has no significant world building, no ground breaking plot, no sweeping descriptions of exotic locations, no exciting battles or epic drama. So why did I enjoy it enough to give it a full 5 stars?

To... more>> put it simply, I just love the characters. More specifically the warm interactions they have with each other. Reading Villainess Fiancée and seeing the main cast have fun is like wrapping oneself in a warm blanking by a cozy fireplace during a cold winter day. The writing is very simple. The upside to this is that it's easy to read and conveys just what it needs to convey. All of the main cast have some fun interactions with each other and there's a sweetness about how they show that care.

There are little things, like how the main trio all have a different favorite cake, and if asked what kind of cake they'd like to eat for their birthday they would pick a flavor they think the others would like, so whenever one of them has a birthday the other two would plan a surprise party and forcibly pick the cake they know that the birthday person likes. Then there are subtle things, like how the characters who know each other well are able to tell when the other is feeling troubled based on their facial expressions and body language.

It's just so fluffy and healing to see such genuine friendship along with fun interactions and a budding romance.

Of course the series isn't without problems. The writing style is a double edged sword. And the main character Louise, while being the sweetest thing, can also rub people the wrong way haha.
Spoiler

I'm mainly referring to HOW DAMN LONG it takes for her to realize that things don't need to follow the world of the story because of all the changes she's made. Gosh this plot point hamstrings her for so long it's silly. I'm glad I was able to binge read the story to get through this hahaha.

[collapse]

Overall though the characters and their interactions really made this story for me. The unoriginal plot doesn't hamper my enjoyment at all. <<less

This novel doesn't really have a plot. Things just happen. It's like a slice-of-life story with elements of a reincarnated otoge villainess novel. So if you're looking for a low-stress story, this could fit your taste.

One potential major turn-off could be the use of icons when it came to dialogue. I, myself, found it quite distracting but somehow managed to get used to it as I binge-read the novel.

Now about the characters themselves. The MC is frustrating at times. She has that annoying trait of being "kind" and "helpful" to... more>> the point of idiocy (like she knows it's gonna bring her trouble but noo, she MUST be the goddamn Martyr Sue) . There were moments I wanted to slap some sense into her thick skull and shout "Stop being so freaking oblivious and s*upid!".

She keeps reiterating how she should stay away from the ML and how the world must follow the original novel's plot line, but doesn't think for a second about how everything changed because of her, especially the ML. I mean, you spent more than a decade being his friend yet you can't figure out he is already different from the novel version? And you keep acting surprised when he is simply being normal, like always?

About the ML and the other characters, I don't really have much to say since they don't have much depth, really.

The story itself flows weirdly and it kind of feels jolted, although, I doubt it's the translator's fault.

Anyway, I'd only recommend this novel to people who either:

1. Have time to waste, and wouldn't mind reading a plot-less, slice-of-life story with a frustrating MC and a rather jarring flow.

Or,

2. Is looking for a low intensity story and is willing to over look a lot of things. Maybe you could treat it as a breather after reading something heavy, lol. <<less

I'm sure this is a very sweet, low-stress story.

But I can't for the life of me understand how the FL reaches the conclusion that the world would end unless it follows the original story. The villain isn't a villain anymore, so how could it ever follow the source material?

If she wants the original otp to be together because she ships them, then by all means! Scheme away! But what's with the flimsy justification? Then later on, when she falls for him, there will be all that unnecessary drama of possible-world-end-so-we-can't-... more>> be-together.

I hate dense protagonists. <<less

I really want to like this one but the story just drags to much. Its a story that doesn't need much thinking when reading. The story os pretty much straight forward. I would have like it better if it was shorter.

The only thing I like is the cute romance part.

I SUPER LOVE THIS NOVEL!! 5/5!!

The friendship between the trio, simon, ian, and louise, is so dreamy. I love how they have their own season.

Louise and her bubbly personality. I love how Ian didn't get creeped out when Louise told him that she saw the future. I love how Ian waited for Louise.

READ THIS NOVEL IT WON'T DISAPPOINT YOU

Ok, here is my review. Before reading this novel, please note that this novel plot is light and simple without much drama, conflict, or misunderstanding. Some may find it a bit boring but I don't mind. Sometimes I enjoy a light and simple story too as a quick read.

MC (Louise) transmigrates into novel world and destined to be a villain in the future. To avoid her destiny, she tried to befriend ML (Ian) since childhood and not to fall in love with him. But things don't go according to her... more>> plan because ML pursues her instead female protagonist (Stella).

Spoiler

I understand why ML choose MC instead Stella. Louise in novel's version is different with current MC. In novel's version, MC's obsession towards ML makes her clingy and ML also hates the fact that she wants to be with him so she can be a respected noble (ML hates being used so much).

Current MC treated ML sincerely since their childhood without any ulterior motive. ML can't help to fall in love with her over time. Simon (2nd ML, Ian's cousin) is also their childhood friend. He's supposed to fall in love with Stella too but instead he falls in love with MC like his cousin.

I love Simon. He's so kind and sincere. He loves both MC and his cousin and always wish them the best. He doesn't mind being a third wheel everytime the three of them meet and continue to do so even after MC and ML are married. Too bad author doesn't give him a happy ending in the end (even Stella gets her own story, why no story about Simon?).

I love Claire and Dean too. I'm happy because they can be together in the end.

It's a fluffy sweet-like story, and there's zero heartbreaking drama. The translation is on point, there's some character development and you don't need to crack your head to understand the story.

This is a cute, bittersweet and adorable novel. I read without any expectations but I enjoyed this novel. It's a light and sweet story so if you want a mind-blowing politic games, blood thirsty action, or cunning villain I advice you to skip this novel.

Not the best story but it made me warm and fuzzy inside, typical shoujo stories.

I can't put my finger on exactly what it is I don't like about it. The translations is well done. The story has potential. It might be the way it's structured and the characters. While I like the idea of them, when I read, it feels stilted almost? I understand that some of the characters are awkward because of the lack of socialization, so they way they speak would be a little cold. But still....

I really don't know what it is I don't like, I just know I don't enjoy... more>> reading this or am invested enough to care about the characters. <<less

Pretty interesting story, but sometimes seems that the line of Stella is not revealed enough, she just appears occasionally and there are actually only a few dialogs that include her presence. But it's not the end so maybe she is going to appear more often in the future chapters.

Great translation, sincere thanks to the translator. I saw some spots once or twice, but it's unpaid translation so can't complain, and in reality it's not so horrible to even complain about. Also I really like this style with icons, and yeah... more>> claim myself s*upid but while reading other stories I quit often don't understand who is talking (especially when there are no names after speech) So greatly appreciate those style

Read this novel at leisure, don't expect anything brilliant but still a great story. <<less

TL: 5/5

Story: 3.5/5

Translation work's amazing. Readable and easy to understand.

... more>> The plot is okay — it's not too different from most villainess/isekai books around. I loved the main trio's dynamics the most, and I'm glad there were a couple of chapters dedicated to the side characters/couples. (Then again, the characters honestly aren't so memorable that you would remember them after reading this. Sorry.)

I did skip some long paragraphs as well because I felt like they were just filler scenes. I think you can even get away with skipping a chapter or two and you'd still know what's going on or what will happen next.

Recommended for when you want to read something light — light, as in your brain cells don't need to process anything lore-heavy, lol. <<less

This book was so wonderfully wholesome. There's a really only one villain. The other characters do come off a bit too good for the most part, but they were so consistent in their personalities, it didn't feel fake.

I loved how the story emphasizes childhood friendships (though that might just be because I personally don't have any), and extols the virtues of trying to be your most honest self. I also liked the moral that destiny is what you make of it, and will change depending on a person's actions rather... more>> than their identity.

The interactions between the male and female characters in the various relationships were adorable. I loved the slow realization that a bickering childhood friendship has turned into teenage love.

I did think the last 20-30 chapters felt like filler fluff rather than real substance, but it did put a sugary bow on multiple relationships that started to develop throughout the book.

Spoiler

If I had one regret, it was that Simon doesn't really get a happily ever after relationship. He was such a steady rock throughout the book. I secretly wanted him to be in a threesome (probably too sordid for a book that made a blushing giggle at foot fetishes). In my mind, I'm imagining that he eventually has to take over the kingdom once Ian dies and gets to be Louise's second husband.

I really liked the MC's character. She doesn't try too hard, and just lives to claim her life as her own. She strays away from the typical transmigated MC with a villainess character who tries too hard to stay away from her villainess path. Her take on surviving and living her life is kinda refreshing. She doesn't just cling to the ML's good side to save her but she has her own dreams and goals as a person.

I like how the love triangle of the MC, ML, and 2nd ML... more>> worked out in the end. There's only a few stories who could execute a good story with a healthy rivalry, cute bromance, and loving friendship if there's a love triangle involve in the story.

I also liked the portrayal of the original heroine.

Spoiler

she wasn't entirely turned into the villainess and was given a proper ending and love story too!

[collapse]

Over all, it's a light and cute story. <<less
