The Legendary Mechanic

What do you do when you wake up and find yourself inside the very game that you love?

What do you do when you realize you that you have not only become an NPC – you have even been thrown back in time to before the game even launched!

What will happen when our protagonist’s two realities coincide?

Han Xiao was a professional power leveler before his transmigration. Using his past life’s knowledge, Han Xiao sweeps through the universe as he prepares for the arrival of the players. This is definitely not your typical transmigration novel.

One, the MC levels up real fast because he cons Players out of their main and sub quests and selling "cheaper than other NPCs" but still expensive items, skills and japtems to them. In his own words, he is providing them compensation by giving them skills and items that are normally hard to get due to repetitiveness and tedious works. He also somehow managed to tie Players into his own army by giving "freebies" (things that the Players will get eventually)

Two, he is a lightning bruiser thanks to having... more>> both NPC and Player system aiding him. He is able to get NPC boss like health while maintaining Player's ability to level up fast. He is basically KOTB, EOSP or SSN MC, except he spams robots instead of undeads. A buffed summoner if you will.

Three, no romance, MC can and will kill enemies no matter genders, nice.

Four, there is humor, MC can and will make a s*xual remarks to guys and girls no matter how inappropriate the time is. Also, he somehow does not possess the Lucky Factor by most MC NPCs, he does have the Player system which is a bigger cheat. <<less

10/10 absolute masterpiece. Review after reading ~1400 chapters in mtl.

Dont read all the negetive comments.

I've read atleast a minimum 30 novels with more than 1000 of chapters and I'm fairly certain that most people who rate this novel under 4.5 stars are those who judge quickly/read only ~100 chapters/very picky/accidental rating.

>Good story initially which is better than most novels but gets more amazing the more chapters you are in. A few 100chap in and it turns into a truly masterpiece, unlike most 4star novels which tend to be good at... more>> first and quickly burn out and survive due to popularity.

>At first I thought this novel is Si-fi/mecha which are not my cup of tea, but I'm very glad that I gave it a try as it is not just that, but still easily the best space/tech novel out there, many authors just fail to do as good.

>Almost no romance/harem or h**ny MC bullsht.

>Intelligent/calculative MC, very apparant in later chapters.

>Very good world building/plot/pace/consistency overall a polished novel.

>I don't usually comment, but I registered and did, just to appreciate author and his novel as he did a great job especially last few 100 chapters.

>If you are looking for another novel try revered insanity (little similar but very kind/caring MC though few people (all) take him for extremely insane and evil). <<less

Very good novel all in all.

But. It does have quite large periods of downtime where it isn't very enjoyable to read. This is largely offset by the great world building and funny cast of characters surrounding the MC. I have gotten very far into it and I must say the beginning (0-200 chapters) and about from the about 800 chapters+ have been the best parts. That isnt to say 200-600 was boring, the MC was just too weak to be of any significance too the current scope of the world... more>> (at the time, he does introduce the world graduly making it bigger) and meeting too few influential characters.

5/5 in my book. (Still ongoing btw, author uploads 99% of the time daily so expect lots to be translated) <<less

Actually it would have been a good read but I just cant get past the its ridiculous plot.

The MC was transported into the game he was playing as a pro but as an NPC and does things that are messing with the main story line of the game and nobody in the game company gives a fck about it. Like for real, what kind of game company would just sit back and let this "BUG" in the game as it is and do nothing? I would understand if he was... more>> transported into the game and the game world became real, then he can do whatever he wants in it and get away with it but he was transported into a game that is being played by REAL people in the REAL world and nobody is being weirded out by this "BUG". Not the game company who wrote the actual story of the game and programed it nor the other players of other countries, besides China, that are being left behind in the game because of him. I mean people would report this to the GM or something since the MC was sticking like a sore thumb with all his actions in the game and it is affecting the balance of gaming experience of players. There was no explanation whatever to justify this in the story and I just cant accept such lousy plot.

Fantasy stories are fine and can be as magical and miraculous as they can get but I think that it should always have a sense of "realism" or should I say logic in it for readers to be engrossed in it. It needs to be "believable". But this is just me.

You can still enjoy this if you ignore what I pointed out. 3/5 stars. <<less

I rarely find large-scale wartime / galaxy conquest stories engaging, but TLM juggles those themes decently well by webnovel standards, which often transition to warfare from a more individualistic starting point and get caught unprepared. TLM also has a much more mature and worldly view of power and politics than a lot of nationalist xenophobic crap novels where the bad guys are just evil by nature.

It starts with an appealing hook: A reincarnation into a game world, with the protagonist Han Xiao posing as an NPC to players. The early... more>> story arcs are the most fun, when he's least distant from these players, and there's still a threat that they might overtake him in level. There are rare moments of fiendish cleverness: When he needs to hide a body, he just issues a quest to a player to hide it for him.

Player characters are often less interesting than NPCs though, and this is a trap I've seen other VRMMO-type stories fall into often (including RSSG). On the surface, an NPC is flatter, dumber, less nuanced than a human being. But an NPC can be anything -- a princess, an android, the last member of an alien species, a s*ave-owning villain, whatever. Every NPC could have an IQ of 10 and they would each apply those 10 IQ points in their own way. But every player has the exact same motivations and thoughts. The minor differences of whether they're shameless, a jerk, a casual player, these don't add up to anything. When your story has everyone acting in their own 'rational self-interest', so to speak, they don't differentiate themselves at all, at least when all we know about their personal lives and backgrounds is that they've put them aside to grind in a combat-based VR game. This makes the pro league segments a pointless slog, even as glossed-over as they are -- I couldn't care less who wins, so why discuss them at all?

It often makes mistakes when it comes to the finer details, but I think TLM is often too big-picture, while neglecting cool opportunities to tell smaller and more fun stories. Early on, there were whole chapters where Han Xiao would just build himself a new piece of gear, or a truck. But the pacing becomes too fast to justify that kind of attention to detail on things that will quickly be outgrown. Later we'll just get some throwaway line that he's using a 'high-end spaceship' that he built off camera, something he never even really needs. The funny thing is, I say the pacing is fast, but because the view is often so distant, it can even seem slow. Sort of like looking out at the horizon from a speeding car. I don't think anybody wants that.

The world seems to miss the finer touches. There was one arc where Han Xiao goes incognito on a surface-level civilization world to recruit a special NPC there, but that sort of thing is highly uncommon. Most of the time, the myriad worlds seem indistinct. Some planets are 'magic' based instead of mechanic-based, but they end up just using spaceships to get around the larger sci-fi universe, same as everyone else.

It's rather original that NPCs have to come to terms with things like player respawn mechanics and behaviors, though characters often fail to connect some pretty obvious dots. HX himself never seems to entertain some pretty obvious questions, like not being concerned at all that he may be 'trapped' in a game which could -- for all he knows -- end his entire existence if the server ever gets shut down due to declining popularity. We never hear one word from the publishers of the game on the outside, which is funny, as they ought to have some opinions. (Who do the players think made this game? An AI? Shouldn't someone be asking?)

A recurring gripe is that things are just too easy for Han Xiao. The author is never willing to put him through lean timees. He has cheat skills, getting more information from his 'system' than any player could be expected to read off an interface, and even absurdly overpowered prognostication abilities. He can get 'molding talents' just by publicly surviving duels because the 'system' didn't account for S-rank players, which is absurdly trivializing. There's also a strange overemphasis on 'luck', which would be quite funny if it could be interpreted purely as Han Xiao's personal superstition, but it tends to be just another way for him to take the advantages without the drawbacks: it's an acceptable excuse when it's convenient, and it's forgotten when it's not. The fortune-telling is the same: funny how the Crimson Dynasty and others never seem to see his growth or backstabs years before they happen.

Han Xiao never has his back against the wall, which makes it all the more unsatisfying how pragmatic he is, never making powerful enemies unless he views it as necessary for his long-term survival. He always far outlevels players so they're never a threat, even en masse. He collects an uncountable number of character summon cards that we never see him use. If the world were so dangerous that he could just barely scr*pe by in spite of all his pragmatism, it would seem justifiable and smart, but when he has dozens of hidden aces and still acts that way, it's just cowardly. If you know the scene in One Piece where Luffy punches a World Noble, you know how exhilarating it is to see a character make the rash and s*upid choice sometimes. Han Xiao is the opposite of that. It can be boring.

I'd say the novel is planned well, but there were several loose ends over the course of its great length. Many seeds are sewn and never lead to a satisfying reaping. Several quests don't get a clean resolution, at least not on camera, or they do, but it comes so long past the point of narrative tension or impact that they may as well have not. Characters like Karlot and Evans, for example, get built up for ages, and never affect the story at all. Just another needless ace up the sleeve.

The political themes and ethical questions are where the novel stands out most. It feels more worldly than many of its peers; anti-racist, anti-nationalist. Conflicts between the respective guilds of different countries don't just come down to the Chinese slapping arrogant fools from other countries in the face. There's examinations of revolutionary movements, class differences, unions, things of that nature. I'll pick a favorite example and elaborate:

Spoiler

Take Rossellin and her 'ideological brainwashing' skill. She tells us it can erase the ingrained revulsion that people may have grown up to feel towards other races, but she can't brainwash away their material class differences. I thought that was really on-point. I know that at the end of the day I'm reading a novel about guys in mech suits punching each other, but it makes a huge difference to me when a novel is making these kinds of themes and background considerations. The ethical considerations of the plan -- not just brainwashing, but also whether it's right to use it to mollify the resentments built up by those who have suffered most under these conditions (these points are present but not deeply examined, suitably for a novel of this type) -- as well as the affecting first-hand accounting of Godoran discrimination, are elevating details... as well as with the full acknowledgement that this plan is insane, and that people would have revolted if not for the pure overruling force behind the plan. Although I might have written some finer points differently if it were up to me, I really appreciated these themes.

This is also a novel that named a strong Esper "EsGod", though, so let's not pretend we're reading Ulysses or some shit.

[collapse]

I do have some grievances about the translation quality, especially early on. It's clumsy, and only gets clumsier whenever anything complicated is being said. I hate when terms that refer to specific talents and game mechanics keep changing -- 'Lesser Mental Resistance' > 'Low Level Willpower'. 'Arms' > 'Weaponry'. 'Beginner' > 'Novice' > 'Basic'. 'Equipment Rating' > 'Equipment Level'. 'Warmachine' > 'Mechanical Pugilist'... And let's not forget proper names. Kedolas' > 'Gedora'. 'Cotton' > 'Colton'. 'Garden' > 'Garton' > 'Gavin'... I could honestly go on. Good luck figuring out what the hell anyone is talking about! It's hard to even understand the scale! Is a Star Field bigger or smaller than a galaxy? It would help if they didn't change their words for them.

TLM is a thoughtful series which never deeply let me down, but also rarely if ever brought me any thrills that I felt deeply in my body. It falls short of profound, but it's a little dry if you're looking for monkey-brained popcorn filler where people do exaggerated reactions to a hero's high test scores. Is it right to commit months to reading a 1463-chapter novel described as such? I'm still asking myself the same question. <<less

Finished the MTL and that was something...

I enjoyed it, BUT COME ON WHY. Why is the Author doing this, the rest will be a spoiler about the ending (so be warned). But before that, the story is really good, recommend it!

Spoiler

So when we going to get a sequel?! Come on, he has a kid and we know nothing about that. He returned and the novel had to end at that time. I'm not the only one who thinks this is rushed, right (not really the ending, cause it's an open ending, nothing 'rushed'). I liked the last couple of chapters, but still would have liked a bit more, but the ending... whyyyy. Why not continue writing, it would have been so fun to read it. Him just appearing out of nowhere like 'sup, hometown of mine' and one of the players noticing him like "Yo, is that Black Star?!! *faints*". Really bitter, author hopefully we get a sequel, but thanks for writing this enjoyed it a lot.

Not a bad story, as long as you set your expectations properly. It's a LitRPG with a fairly overpowered main character that doesn't spend an excessive amount of time on deep plots.

So as the summary says, the MC finds themselves inside a VRMMO they played as an NPC, in the time before the game even launched. This setting however is just a means to empower the MC, but is not super important in and of itself. While the MC and players have access to game mechanics, all the other "NPCs"... more>> do not, and treat it as a real world, and given how every single NPC is seemingly fully sapient and the expansiveness and realism of how they act it might as well be real. They also briefly nod towards the idea it may potentially be real somewhat early on but then never explore this angle. The MC never gives any concern to returning to the "real" world, and despite briefly entertaining it at the beginning, never later tries to find his own character when he would have started playing. There is also never any mention of the developers of the "game", despite the MC throwing entire storylines off the rails and messing with the development rate of the players in the area around him. The MC is living entirely in this world as if it is his own and this is very important to keep in mind.

This story is about the MC as he develops and grows into an important character within the world of this "game". The players themselves are also not actually important despite it possibly seeming like they might be early on, and the semi-regular chapters about the pro league. The pro league is entirely unimportant, and is just a brief perfunctory nod to Chinese players doing great since the author has to not anger the Chinese government. Even then arguably the Chinese players are mediocre as evidence by their "original" results in the previous timeline, and only succeeding due to the MC as an NPC giving them access to things they should not have way ahead of time. The MC himself also doesn't actually seem all that patriotic, it's just a symbiotic relationship with the players and he happened to spawn on the "server" that the Chinese players all initially chose.

So as for that symbiotic relationship, the MC as an NPC is capable of offering things for sale to them, both for money as well as EXP. He can transfer skills and such that players can't seem to trade normally between themselves, and with access to the game system unlike regular NPCs he is way more willing to trade many things for EXP which lets him vastly outstrip the growth rates of regular NPCs as well, and he lacks a level cap unlike the players whose level caps only grow with version updates. He regularly refers to farming the players as leeks in his garden for EXP and money.

While the MC is constantly growing and encountering regularly more powerful enemies who challenge him, you can expect him to always come out on top if he's given enough time to farm some more EXP or acquire some extra skills. His past life knowledge of course allows him to access unique quests and rewards as well as recruit important NPCs to his side before any players can. He kinda slides himself as a middle man between the original main story quests and the players, reaping the original rewards and then passing down some benefits to the players since he's an NPC who can issue quests whose EXP rewards do not detract from his own.

I do find amusing that the players are often portrayed quite realistically. They are agents of chaos who do things that the fully sapient "NPCs" find absolutely insane since to the players it's just a game. The NPCs do also actually realize that these players are "immortal", seem oddly compliant to requests (the NPCs are unconsciously issuing quests), and have no care for their own lives. Human wave tactics, su*cide bombers, logging in and out to evade detection, messaging outside the game to get around communication jamming, the metaness is actually really delightful whenever it happens. Especially amusing when the MC is able to take advantage of this without the players knowing, since they don't know that he is aware of their true nature. <<less

It's ongoing but, so far, It's awesome. The novel has an amazing plot, nice pacing, a great protagonist and there is nothing much to complain about. All arcs are equally good and keep me involved all the way.

I Heavily recommend this. Meanwhile, I will have to wait a long time before I collect enough chapters to binge read again.

Pros:
Fast paced
Sci-fi setting instead of cultivation

Cons:
Page long status screens
MC takes X damage from guns and keeps going while evil goons are one-shot killed (unless bosses)
It is set up for the MC to seem smart but the evil goons are s*upid

Conclusion:
Think of it as a gaming novel.

100% one of the best novels I've ever read. Everything about the novel is at a very high standards. Super in-depth world-building, fully fleshed out characters that are never forgotten, perfect translation and an epic story. I'm not sure what else to say but to give it a try. No seriously. One of the best online gaming and adventuring novels, don't miss it if you love this type of novel and don't care about romance.

Reduce 2 points because there is no romance and the MC does everything, like playing online games. He ignores all feelings and cares only about his enjoyment and benefit. Such as letting the plot progress to kill billionaires just for his benefit, or cheating his friend, Li Yalin from Division 13, and just running away, never caring what's happened to her. So I think MC is a... more>> real ret*rd until a later chapter, when the author starts changing his behavior.

For the romance part, I think the author may want to marry MC to his mechanical robots but change his mind at the last minute. In conclusion, do not expect any romance in this novel.

You may enjoy this novel if you want to read something like playing a game for fun. But if you want to read a real novel with plot, feeling, and character depth, you will be disappointed.

Finally, did I mention romance is sucky in this novel? <<less

Just finished it and all I can say is that I had not enough of it. From the start to the end the novel was interesting characters didn't disappear without a reason even the villains had a deep character and had a story and many of them were there till the end. One of the best novels out there. I prefer wuxia and those similar but this was more sci-fi, but I can say that this was so interesting that I just couldn't stop reading it. There are a few... more>> things that I would have preferred to be different like if his love life was more interesting but the way it was written didn't make it feel bad. This novel is a must read - its just amazing.
I have read a ton of other novels but none has caused me to make an account just so I can rate this novel.

It just hits differently compared to other reads - the way the story gets portrayed and drags you the reader into wanting more. Sure the MC just like many other novels is OP and his plot armor is thick af, but unlike other novels where the stronger the MC is the stronger their dementia. This novel actually... more>> tries to retain most of the characters along the way, they get mentioned from time to time.

I couldn't stop myself from reading rest of the chapters on quality MTL website. I'd say, this novel (which is very great, compared to everything that is being released these days) got perfect ending (unlike Charm of Soul Pets). The ending is totally in Arifureta style with good quality as well. Now author just need to write a couple of follow-up after-story chapters to make everybody happy. I'm eager to see MC's parents faces, when he will introduce everyone there. Yeah, it is a ok novel. Can be very funny, but lacks content. Everything for the MC always goes his way and it gets boring a lot.

Anything to do with the players is boring, and I skipped pretty much all of it without losing plot content.

But my main issue is with the chinese indoctrination in this novel. Boy.. There is a lot. All foreign player with exception of maybe russians are put as evil. For this I really recommends to skip players stuff. For those who notice it, try to... more>> skip it.

Yeap, I skipped a lot of things, but it still a good face slap novel. Nothing much. Just ok. <<less

This is pretty much a WN of a comic book. If you like 'Iron Man', you'll see an awful lot that's recognizable as the story progresses (Marvel Comics Universe has gained massive popularity in China through the films- and of course Iron Man's 'rich, powerful, answer to nobody' theme resonates there for reasons best explained elsewhere).

The GOOD:

  • Passable and entertaining story for the most part.
  • Acceptably pleasant MC (with some exceptions)
  • Interesting story perspective & theme.
The BAD:

  • 'Pie from the sky' powerups & wealth- this is not counting the 'I knew this would happen' time travel stuff (which you think would be enough by itself).
    Spoiler

Especially the 'I get experience as an NPC for giving out missions' BS. Why would you get a bunch of XP because someone did some thing you told them to? NPCs don't 'level up', and when they rarely do- it's just scripted, or 'like anyone else'.

    [collapse]
  • Ridiculous premise in 'world canon' which is unaccountably forgiving of the MCs antics.
    Spoiler

The idea he's IN a video game (world?) somehow... ok, fine. 'Players' show up & definitely prove 'he's in a game'... ok. MC changes all kinds of stuff the developers would definitely check on/fix/rollback/nerf (he essentially single handedly RUINED the player experience (he admits himself)) - and no developer does anything?... Sure. whatever...

    [collapse]
  • On that note- game development doesn't work like he thinks- as he seems to be able to get benefits before they are likely 'coded in' (if we followed the 'world theme- which we only kinda do).
  • Everyone except enemies (or future enemies/stepping stones) like him. The amount of praise/fawning the author decided PCs supposedly devote to this NPC is ridiculous. Real people do not worship a cutscene character/plot development proxy to the degree depicted- to them he's just 'game fiction'.
  • All the women above 18 really like him. No romance so far, but I don't care- just don't know why the author 'flirts with the idea' (& doesn't deliver) so much.
  • Actually, overall 'character development' barely happens, and a few characters are more 'slowly developing plot puppets' there to serve whatever needs the MC has.
  • No way would he really survive with his crappy 'shovel almost everything onto intelligence' stats.
  • So much 'this character sheets progress' plastering of stats & abilities. Hint: you can actually ignore it and the story will still make sense.
  • Forced plotting and the MC's 'Gary Stu' level wish fulfillment can get excessive. All MC's are either fodder, sheep, or s*aves to the MC's machinations- and they're often respond predictably to at (to keep with the MC's 'image').
  • World canon has a basic framework, but is otherwise 'plot assisting technobabble nonsense'. Many factors of this 'game' are unbalanced at best, or unworkable as presented. It doesn't interfere with the story much- it's just 'too much bullshitting' and assuming readers don't know better/care...
The Different:

  • Being in a game world that's actually (kinda) still the game (but not really)... It's kinda different, though not executed well.
Although it seems like the negatives outweigh the positives, the storytelling is pretty good for what it is. If you want it to be a logical and insightful delve into an actual 'world based on a game- which is still somehow a game'... Yeah- forget it. It takes itself about as seriously as most comics do their own worlds and continuity- and in that light, it's fairly good.

Spoiler

Who am I? Where do I come from? Where will I go? Am I real?

Are we really human, or just the NPC?

I think some readers may feel the same. Thanks, the author. I had wronged you.

My review on July 2020, which is very inaccurate!

Spoiler

Can give only 2 stars. Can't give more.

The MC has no life or brain at all. The other characters too. They just exist at that plot point else the MC could not enter the scene. They're discarded almost immediately after the plot point ends.
Another chars plugged in, MC moves on, chars discarded. Loop until next scene. Then another chars plugged in, MC moves on, chars discarded. Loop until arc ends.
Change scene, then plugging in another chars, MC move on, chars discarded. Loop.
No Character emotion, feeling, interaction, role, nothing even anythingwhaggamy.

MC exists to level up. No reason for why he has to. Just level up, OK?

This novel is very good for the game-addict chunibiaos who want some entertainment awhile game-update period.
No offense. But see these facts.

1. It's Game Universe, right?

2. Where's the Game Company that develops this game? Does it exist? No any single reaction from this company, its people, its stocks, its CEOs. Is this normal?

3. Where are Game Masters? Can't they sense this Final-BOSS-level Bug ?

4. Where's Programmers. One NPC causes a lot of plot line change. The changes even disrupt other NPCs and Players. Nothing's done. Not even a dialogue seen. Is this normal?
5. The annual tournament between players. ROTFL. The Chinese teams have all the advantages from the Cheating NPC. They advance by leap and bound. They even are ready in unrealeased advance stage. But all they can do is - losing to the honest (player) teams from other countries !
My Bad Novel's Tolerance Point deteriotes after ch.500. It reaches 0 at ch.800+. At 932th, the TP plunges below -100. So have to stop and start writing this bad review.

You follow a reincarnated Han Xiao in a "game" universe from his past life, but is it really just that?

This is Space Opera in the grandest scope imaginable, but told in a webnovel format. To give you a sense of its scope. The story starts on a planet then moves into space, the local galactic cluster, the known universe, newly found galaxies, and in the end something that will make you question your own reality.

The Author is such a brilliant master story teller, he had planned every story element from... more>> the very first chapter. There are mentions of events in the very beginning that are slowly unfolding thousand chapters later. What brilliant story telling. That's impossibly hard to realize on a daily chapter schedule, so hats off to your brilliance.

Han Xiao does everything out of survival. He meets other "NPCs", but because of the game elements he can never really open up to them. These NPCs are amazing characters in their own right and the potential romantic interests are so damn bittersweetly alienated, for good reasons that would be a huge spoiler.

All in all, this is crazy good Sci Fi space opera with a MC that's just trying to survive. 10/5 Stars. I'm a huge fan of yours now Mr. 齐佩甲 and I'll follow everything you'll write until I die. <<less
