After an explosion, You XiaoMo finds that he is now a probationary disciple of the TianXin sect. However, he is one with dubious potential, so just when he starts to adapt to his new circumstances, he receives a piece of bad news. If he is unable to produce the required result after half a year to become an official disciple of the TianXin sect, he would be driven out of the sect.

While You XiaoMo is going all out to make medicines and earn money, he runs into Ling Xiao. To his horror, he later discovers that Ling Xiao is actually someone cloaked in human skin.

Despite the many high reviews, I would like to give this 3.5 stars. The extra 0.5 is for effort.

TL;DR:

This is primarily a true xianxia cultivation/alchemy novel, with yaoi/BL thrown in.

... more>> The author puts a lot of effort into building the world - cultivation system, alchemical processes, sect and social structure. The boy x boy relationship makes the story more interesting and fluffy. However, in terms of actual plot and character development, this story falls flat.

Now on to the detailed review...

SUMMARY:

You XiaoMou suddenly dies and is reborn in the alchemy division of a sect. Though he has no memory of his new body's previous life, and the innate talent of that body is low, he decides to become a successful mage (aka alchemist).

Shortly after reincarnating, he discovers that the most famous senior-brother in the sect, the martial arts genius Ling Xiao, has been replaced by a mysterious and powerful entity. This new senior-brother takes an unusual interest in You XiaoMou, first in his pills, then his personality, then his body...!

CHARACTERS:

My biggest complaint with this novel is the main character.

You XiaoMou is a typical BL uke -- weak-willed, hesitant, cowardly, air-headed, and good-hearted. Many of the comments and reviews on this novel talk about how adorable and pure he is -- but honestly, I think that is only through the rose-colored glasses of the fujoshi readers. (Even though I, too, am a fujoshi...)

Unlike most "pure" uke characters, he doesn't really help anyone, nor is he unusually kind to anyone. He is mostly anti-social and hated by everyone, other than a few senior-brothers. Even though he is reborn with super-protagonist god-given cheat talent, he isn't very intelligent. He rarely thinks deeply about things, is always confused, and is extremely clumsy. In other stories, this is balanced out by goodwill and acts of kindness or humor -- but You XiaoMou lacks those traits to make him more likeable. He rarely ever makes decisions, never plans ahead, has small ambitions, and his entire story develops depending on how he is mindlessly dragged around by the male lead, Ling Xiao.

Even up to Chapter 240... Everything You XiaoMou gained in this story was either handed to him on a platter by Ling Xiao, or was a direct result of his god-given talent, rather than any real effort, struggle, or sacrifice on his part.

As we near chapter 300, the MC's personality has inexplicably taken a 180° turn. Suddenly he is outspoken, greedy, extremely confident, easily goes against authority, quick to fight, makes friends easily, quick-witted, business-minded... How? What?

Ling Xiao, the male lead, is more likeable than the main character, due to his role as the "dangerous seme." He has all the usual qualities -- good looks, mysterious background, strong powers, and a personality that is sexy, dangerous, teasing, and very possessive of the MC. He's supposed to be extremely mysterious, but the full extent of his powers are described in an early chapter so there is no surprise about it. One thing that bothers me is that he is extremely powerful with no limitations at all, he never makes mistakes, knows everything, and he falls for the MC extremely quickly and with little reason. However, if you put on your fujoshi-glasses, you can ignore his shortcomings in favor of his utter perfection.

WRITING:

Despite my complaints with the characters, where this novel really stands out is that it's written as a real cultivation story, rather than just yaoi fluff. The author has obviously put a lot of thought into how the world works. The descriptions of how sects, alchemy, martial arts, levels, auctions, etc are organized are all very detailed without being fact lists/word-vomit. The pacing of events in the story is a little bit slow, but overall not too bad.

The events in the story are very standard for xianxia -- reincarnation, aptitude testing, soul storage/herb dimensions with high spiritual energy, alchemy competitions, auctions, beast-taming, and forbidden treasure realms that only open once every few years. Nothing very original, but all executed fairly well.

The yaoi/BL romance is both fluffy and sexy. It's not very deep, but the characters' interactions (and especially the love/flirting scenes) are written well.

OVERALL:

There are some plot holes here and there, but when you combine the decent BL with the honest attempt at writing a detailed cultivation story, you get a passable novel. Despite the lack of character depth/development (and my complaints), it's still a fairly easy and enjoyable novel to read. Just don't think too deeply about it, and you can enjoy the ride. <<less

An awesome novel (even for people that don't really like BL). There are a couple of MATURE scenes, but it's not too bad.

Spoiler

I think they're pretty much together though, so that might change...

[collapse]

The MC is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. He feels really average in terms of personality and intelligence, which is realistic???

The side characters are awesome... maybe even better then the MC? *runs*

Brief moments of humor lol

Good translations. Fluffy contracted pets.

OP co-MC. You Xiaomo really hasn't done much by himself, but it seems...

Spoiler

there might be more action for him in the future? He's going to a school where he'll learn skills to use with his soulforce.

Read up to Ch 52. Not as action packed as most Xianxia novels, however, it does have it's own level of suspense in each chapter. I wouldn't classify it as Yaoi either. Perhaps very light shounen-ai, although at this point there is really no romance. Plotwise, it may seem slow in the beginning but the story builds the world, character, and plot extremely well. You can't help sympathizing with the MC, who was a soul from modern times suddenly thrown into a world where he now has to figure out... more>> the path of Alchemy so that he can survive in this strange world. Up to now, each chapter builds upon the MC's character in working hard, and planning for the future. Even all his setbacks make him work harder. Unlike many other Xianxia stories, there is no antagonizing or revenge plotlines. His fellow sect brothers treat him well. His situation starts getting suspenseful once he meets Ling Xiao, however, it makes the story more amusing and delightful to read as you wonder about the mysterious Ling Xiao.

Excellent story so far and I can't help but constantly refresh to see more chapters or reread the chapters again. <<less

Absolutely a 5-star gem! This book quickly became one of my all-time favorites. It was my first Chinese BL novel, and I've been hooked ever since. I've reread it twice, and it still holds a special place in my heart. A must-read for sure!

Rating: 4.5

Pairing Type: transmigrator, mage MC X demonic beast, martial artist ML; overpowered couple; standard formula gong; devoted couple; shou MC x gong ml

... more>> Heat level: low (3.5/5 spicy; open door love scenes are plentiful but not very explicit. They are an intimate couple)

Re-readability: 3/5 might reread but it’s insanely long, so who knows when that might happen lol

Trope: Xianxia; pill concocting; pill based cultivation; demon beast; personal dimension/secret space; face slapping; Gary Stu

Triggers: death; mu*der; violence; dubious consent (old school yaoi tropes where the shou is all “no no no” and the gong does what he wants)

Holy crap that was an insanely long read. I don’t even know where to begin. I began reading this sometime in like 2020 or 2021. I just got around to completing the second half of the novel.

I’m glad that I picked it back up because things really picked up in the second half of the novel.

I started getting annoyed because it truly had all the makings of a Gary Stu novel. YXM and LX were just way too overpowered. Every opponent they met wasn’t their match. Cultivation meant nothing because they were basically doing a cultivation speed run. Demon beasts and other treasures all just kind of fell into their laps.

But then they travelled into the higher realm. The villains got bigger and more powerful. Suddenly they were small fish in a big pond and the leads weren’t able to one punch everything anymore. Fights actually had stakes for once. The leads actually started to experience hardships and trials in order to reach their goals.

And with that they also continued to feed my little caveman brain with plenty of face slapping, treasure hunting and other common fun tropes lol

The leads dynamic is... not ideal. Definitely very heteronormative with LX calling YXM “wife”. Their love scenes can also be quite dubious in terms of consent. I don’t understand why that’s such a common trope. Ugh. The nice side of their relationship is that they are both very devoted and are by each other’s side the entire novel.

There are plenty of plot holes. Some got filled in, some didn’t but the narrative was honestly a lot tighter than I thought it would be by the completion of the novel. There’s also a sh*t ton of characters and I would frequently forget who they were and be like “bro who tf are you”.

Anyway, I do actually recommend. I did not think I would give it such a high score when I put it down a couple years ago but the later half really was pretty epic and exciting. <<less

I don't know why people rate this masterpiece low but yeah one of the Chinese fantasy bl novels I always reread too when I stuck in others novel. I can read this many times without losing all the feelings I read it on the first time.

Baka couple that care about each other without overly sensitive or concerns that even a little scar or love rival can destroyed their relationship.

Their relationship grows step by step in every journey. No sudden love but developed loved. From time to time trust is their... more>> proof of love.

Here the ML fall first then MC. Of course ML is a bit sh.t but somehow it related to why he is like that with his origin.

MC certainly had to grow from very safe environment to the hellish one. I could say he has very high luck. But it came with price of danger.

And overall, I cannot stop reread this novels. Somehow I just felt weird why this hasn't been made to anime yet. At least, manhua. There is only 2 chapter. Where is the rest! <<less

This is one of the greatest novels I've ever read. There are 700-odd chapters plus some extras, where you can laugh, get angry thanks to certain twists and turns of the author, become a complete fan of Ling Xiao or even join Momo and cry thanks to the reality of the lack of money.

The plot of the novel itself isn't very innovative, since what you'll find most often are realities more or less along the same lines in other stories. But I really think that this author managed to get... more>> the most she could out of it. And, of course, by overusing some themes to the point where I wanted to grab her by the neck, shake her hard and ask her if she really couldn't think of anything other than auctions for certain parts of the narrative. Honestly, I think the protagonists were more into auctions than anything! But, well... Despite being annoying it wasn't unbearable, so I'll leave it aside for now.

I also really liked how she developed the main couple's relationship. Ling Xiao went from a heartless bully to a kid who likes to pick on the person he likes just for attention. I really like the way he gradually gives Momo more and more importance, to the point where he'd drop everything just to get his wife out of trouble. And believe me, they get into a LOT of trouble!

You Xiaomo, our protagonist, has a relatively uneventful journey throughout the story. Whether in the romantic sense, development or growth. With the support of his husband, our dear boss, and his own desperate efforts, he quickly becomes a skilled magician. A skilled magician, but a rather dumb one. Our child becomes lazy when it comes to thinking, and there comes a time when he throws everything at Ling Xiao to think and reason. But I don't blame him, since the poor guy has to deal with his boss's super-brain 24/7 and is constantly tricked by him thanks to it. At least he's treated well despite all this bullying...

Their relationships with other characters were handled well. I mean, normally they're forgotten or ignored completely. Not here. Like, you don't get constant attention to them, let alone much development, but I'd say that what we do get is pretty good considering how much worse it could be.

The plot is relatively good and well-crafted, with a pace that sometimes slows down and then speeds up. At times you feel distressed at how long it takes to finish a chapter and at others you're worried about how many chapters in a row you've read. It can vary from not reading for days at a time to keeping your eyes on your cell phone for days at a time. I think it depends a lot on you, your taste and how busy you are.

Well, that's it. This novel is good for passing the time and enjoying a long read, which will take you a while, but which will be fun and even profitable. I recommend it especially for those who like to read about cultivation, since that's the main theme. <<less

Okay so the title almost made me not to read this novel 😹😹

Almost but I decided to give it a try and I didn't regret

I honestly hate it if the ML isn't strong enough to protect themselves and their love ones and this novel didn't disappoint

... more>> No matter the issue he was always strong enough and always find a way outta a shitty situation get stronger and come back

They support, travel and build their lives together and I like that they were not separate since they met and even if they did it's not up to a year or years

It's a 10 outta for me and I definitely recommend and yes this is indeed about the amazing legendary master's wife who found his spring and his new spring 😹😉 <<less

This is not gonna be a novel that you would reread for plot. You’re gonna be reading this solely to hunt for the smut scenes, GUARANTEED.

I’ve read this novel 3-4 times now & I’ll say with full transparency that I have skimmed my rereads. First time I read it—awesome. Plot was outrageously long & dragged, but the conflict, face-slaps, worldbuilding, plethora of characters won me over. I like the fact that you can look back & just see how much progression our main characters have been through. It’s rewarding; it’s... more>> fun. I just would never reread line by line. It’s wayyyy too much.

I have scenes that I would revisit but mind you, there’s like a handful of them. I forget about 95% of the characters in this novel. There’s just a lot of fodders & people trying to pit each other. Turn off your brain if you want to try it out. This will be a good filler read if you’re camping out for other novels <<less

For me, this novel is okay, so-so at best. Both MC and ML irk me in one way and another. Story is okay, author described things clearly so it's easy to follow. But there's a lot of loophole, and a lot of unnecessary exaggerated side-characters (it was described super powerful or something by the author but later they just don't live up the expectations built). Villains (both main villains and side villains) are your usual "Am jealous of you so you should die" type of villains and pretty much 1... more>> dimensional, imho.

1. MC (You Xiao Mo), described by the author as if he's a female protagonist with an additional d*ck. At first I found his s*upidity cute, but after like what, 500 chapters, repeatedly making mistakes more s*upid than previous, I honestly just want to wack his face. Annoyed me to death, istg. As story proggressed, he got more bland and I just don't understand where his character development is. More like character regression? I honestly feel like Ling Xiao is more of the main character at mid-story. Other than having his level raised tremendously faster than anyone else and getting super lucky along the way, I don't get Xiao Mo's plus points as a main character.

2. ML (Ling Xiao), is your usual super OP male leads. Cool, but never takes MC's feelings in consideration, unless he's not interested in the topic. Their relationships are unhealthy, and more than anything, it looks like he's keeping a pet rather than a lover. I understand if the author wanted to make the story focused more on the martial arts side, but at least make it natural. ML just fell in love with MC out of nowhere. After that, it's just a repeating "saving damsel in distress" troupe.

The story itself keeps dragging, and it's a "MC accidentally made enemies everywhere because villains are brainless and easily blinded in jealousy, and then ML came to the rescue, wack all his lover enemies out of the story" repeatedly, only the location was different. <<less

MC transmigrates into the body of a temporary disciple of the Tianxin Sect. The original owner was a Mage with poor soul foundations and was expected to not last very long in the Sect. Luckily for the MC, his foundations are much better than the original owner's! And, even more fortunate, he also ends up being the owner of a golden finger -- a magical dimension with a spiritual spring and farmable land capable of cultivating magical herbs that are useful for his growth as a Mage. Of course, one... more>> must also not forget the ML. The ML is definitely more of a villain at first, especially as he takes over the identity of someone else and threatens the MC to make magical pills for him, but sooner or later, he'll be a very powerful and doting backer of the MC.

This is a cultivation fantasy novel with in-depth worldbuilding and lots of powering-ups. It's that kind of self-indulgent novel where the MC and ML constantly face challenges but never loses and instead only continue to grow stronger and stronger! I originally was hesitant about reading this, and at one point, I even considered stopping (at the 200-chapter mark, since at that point, the original plotline was all wrapped up), but I'm glad I read this till the end! It's a very satisfying read~ I ended up being very fond of the main CP but what I definitely loved most was the setting! Highly recommended if you're looking for a story to really sink your teeth into! Lots of fun and humorous times, with a satisfying end to most storylines (which is very difficult to do!)

CHARACTERS: 9/10

The two main characters were not my favorite at first. The MC was a little too cowardly in my eyes and the ML a little too overbearing. They develop as the novel goes along though, which is the most important! There are also plenty of side characters that were notable, though... because of the sheer number of them, and the way the two main characters moved several times, a lot were forgotten T.T

You Xiaomo (MC)

He transmigrated as a temporary disciple facing expulsion if he doesn't learn quickly. So in the first arc of the story (1-200) we get to know the development of a Mage (producer of magical pills) through his eyes. As mentioned, he's pretty cowardly at first. His defining characteristic is that he's very hardworking and a little s*upid. He's not the kind of MC that I enjoy reading about personally since he's the type to get into trouble all the time for the s*upidest of reasons (sneezingface. jpg), but he grows on you LOL! And I like his money-grubbing nature. It was very satisfying seeing him develop~

Ling Xiao (ML)

Mysterious demon-like existence LOL. He appears for the first time as some creature pretending to be the number one Warrior student of the Tianxin Sect and then immediately threatens the MC. He's the thick-faced type of shameless. And after discovering the MC's talent, he decides to stick to him for the sake of eating up his magic pills.

ROMANCE: 8.75/10

Though I'm fond of the banter between the main CP and their humorous dog-food-feeding antics, their dynamics aren't my favorite. It's cute and they have chemistry, but the "s*upid-oblivious!shou" type is a bit overdone in my eyes. Even after the MC grows, this tag doesn't ever leave him DX

SETTING: 10/10

This is a complete cultivation fantasy setting! The main characters start off in the middle realm and work their way up to the top slowly. Making it a true weak-to-strong story! Their climb to the top is very satisfying, and the world that is introduced is equally fascinating. A lot of cultivation novels I read before focused on the fighting aspect. This is the first that focused mainly on magic pill production, which is why I found this story even more intriguing.

PLOT: 9/10

The story can be broken down into three arcs: Tianxin Sect is the first arc where the MC learns the basics of Mage cultivation. The second arc is him learning mid-level Mage cultivation and the third... LOL is high-grade Mage cultivation! There's mystery in between because of the MC and the ML's background, as well as intrigue and drama in each of the places that the MC ends up in. However, the focus of the story is definitely the main character's growth to become a high-grade mage worth the quality of his soul.

RATING: 4.6/5

Highly recommended! If you can handle long epics and want to explore a cultivation world in detail, then this is for you! In between all of the worldbuilding, the author does a good job keeping things intriguing with side-plots that are relatively satisfying (though they're usually instigated by cannon fodders with low IQs lol).

RANDOM THOUGHTS:

    • Personal Enjoyment: My personal enjoyment level wasn't constant. There are some draggy bits. But, as a whole, I'd say 4/5!
    • Literary Level: The translation is pretty good! I was confused at first because there's a lot I don't know about this kind of setting, but I quickly got the hang of it. As for the author's writing, the ending was a bit rushed cause all the hanging plotlines were forcibly closed, but overall? Good pacing 4/5!
    • Heat Level: This is an older story, so there are definitely some explicit scenes! At one point, the original TL-er says that there are only 1 or 2 s*x scenes. BUT, in reality, it's more than that, especially in the middle section. In terms of explicitness, I'd say it was around 3.5/5.
1st REREAD NOTES: (10/23/2022) I only read up to Ch. 235 this time around. I remember the following arcs to well so I got a bit bored T.T I guess I'll have to wait a while before coming back and enjoying the whole novel again. It's pretty much as good as a I remembered though! I have no reason to change my rating for it either. At least, not at this time. <<less

The story is kinda o-k (which is why I keep on reading) but I more than once when reading a chapter, I would feel how s*upid the MC is. Innocent is not it, s*upid is the right term. Even the ML seems harmless compared to the MC. He keep on taunting others, openly talking sh*t about others and turning everyone into his enemies. If the ML is not there he'll be dead on the spot. Ive completed reading this novel and I felt like the MC's character is quite ok... more>> in the early chapter, but getting more n more s*upid as time goes on. Its like he has given up thinking and behaving like an adult and just let the ML figure all the things out. Everyone decent is gay and all girls is portrayed like arrogant, rude clingy person. I honestly don't like this book at all although there are some parts I will admit are well written. The first thing I don't like is that the protagonist is an entirely different person when he is and isn't with the love interest, he goes from being smart cheeky and hardworking to s*upid and helpless. The next point I dislike is the clear mistreatment of the female characters especially those in villain or minor villain roles as compared to the treatment of male characters including villains that do worse things... more>> then their female counterparts. And lastly I can not stand the protagonists contract beasts as they are entirely ungrateful for what he does for them and constantly looks down on him any scene they show up annoys me to the point of throwing my phone. There are however some rather good plot lines and a semi decent overall plot so its not completely without saving. <<less

Okay hi, for anyone who is reading the comments and seeing "there was no character devolvement or " the MC was lied to and forced, and that it's a toxic relationship" OR " threatened/raped" yada yada. Well because as the novel goes on you can see how much they actually cared for each other

He went from being quiet, not liking to cause trouble, being in the spotlight, and just honestly minding his own business. if this doesn't have any good feelings about reading then that's fine, it's your opinion and if you worry it'll get boring with how long it is. The beginning was reaaaaaly boring. It becames really interesting around chapter 200 or 300. The relationship seems forced at first, and I'm a bit feed up with reluctant shou/uke that don't own up to / assert their desires (and even with the designation of shou/gong. Why can't they switch in Asian novel ??)

Usual face-slapping and OP characters. Really OP.

I personally liked this novel a lot. Being a fujoshi, reading this kind of plot is really exciting. Though there are a lot of chapters, once you start reading, you won't be able to stop. It's a complete package, the protagonist grows up to new levels, there's action, comedy, growth and of course the smut ;P

I would definitely recommend this novel to my fellow fujoshis! ^=^
