The Legend of Sun Knight

I am a knight. To be precise, I am the Church of the God of Light’s Sun Knight.

The Church of the God of Light worships and serves the God of Light, and theirs’ one of the three largest religions on this continent.

As the whole continent knows, the Church of the God of Light has the Twelve Holy Knights, and each one has his own unique personality and features.

To be the Sun Knight is to have shining golden hair, sky blue eyes, a compassionate nature, and a brilliant smile.

“The benevolent God of Light will forgive your sins.”

I must have said that line at least a million times in my time as the Sun Knight.

However, the greatest wish in my life is to be able to stand before the entire continent and roar, “Damn your ‘the whole continent knows’! This Sun Knight just doesn’t feel like smiling! I just don’t want to forgive these human tr*shes! I just want to pepper my sentences with ‘f***’!”

Unfortunately, even to this day, I continue to wear a smile as I say, “The benevolent God of Light will forgive your sins.”

I really liked the story. I'm rating it a five star because I definitely think people should read this. It's extremely rare to see someone write such an interesting first person perspective. Or perhaps I've read way too many awful first person narration (that are apparently popular novels). While most first person narration feels horribly dry and gives the impression you're reading a grocery list of actions, the narration in this one is extremely charming--a lot of the humor comes from the comments in the narrative. It's so extremely well... more>> written that the MC manage to influence your perception of reality, you get influenced by his happy-go-lucky personality up until the narration switches to another's perspective and you realize just how much MC has been trivializing important issues to not make his friends worry. He is not a fully reliable narrator and that's a huge part of the charm. MC is an intersting guy. He's the laziest and most annoying two faced bastard ever (according to other characters). He's also apparently pretty evil, but as you go on you realize just how, how much he has a big heart under all that sassy narration. He's probably the biggest idiot of all the characters. The irony is probably that he's supposed to be the least hero-like hero, and least cliche MC, however you then see how much of a big-hearted cliche MC he is in the end despite the anti-hero appearances. There are some parts of the plot I've seen coming a mile away, however Yu Wo is really talented as subverting other expectations and redirects them into something completely different.

(I still have to say, the Chinese raws has slightly more "flavour" than the narration. Sun Knight sounds more sassy in his use of words that aren't as well translated into a foreign language. The translation is extremely good tho, I highly recommend it! PS: The Chinesefied western names in the original are reallllyyy hard to remember) <<less

This.

This is it. The light novel that started my trek into all other light novels, the one that amused me with its setup, surprised me with its depth, and filled my heart with both love and pain for its characters. I really loved reading LSK, to the point that I hunted down the raws and finished the story on my own when the translations were still in progress.

How do I describe the story? It's all about cliches and then overturning them. The protagonist makes this clear in the very first... more>> chapter between how he acts and how people /expect/ him to act. For a bit, the story arcs focuses on the humor aspect and milks it for all it's worth. You laugh at these characters. You make fun of them. For a while, you even feel annoyed by them (and that was for me and the MC! He really does act for his own selfish interests, funny as they are and frequently as he fails).

And then as you read on, you find out more and more about the world, its background, it history. Unexpected things happen that turn the comedy serious--never completely to the point of losing its lighthearted roots, but enough to make your heart ache for the characters you've grown to love. Yu Wo really does a grand job setting up her story and unveiling its secrets in this series. I especially love how she keeps good track of her loose ends and ties them all together by the end (to be carried on in LSK's sequel/prequel stories).

More so than the strength of the plot, is the power of the relationships binding all the characters together. Long after I finished this series, the memories of their escapades, arguments and tears still stayed in my head. I hope they'll stay in yours as well.

Really a gem. Thank you for translating this wonderful work. <<less

Loved it! This series completely swept me off my feet.

And the MAIN CHARACTER. I am completely in love with Sun. Not only is he hot as hell and possesses a very realistic view of how the world works (there won't always be a knight in shining armour to rescue you, etc), he had me in stitches of laughter from start to finish. He is without a doubt one of my favourite characters in both Western and Japanese novels.

I never knew a despicable character could be so much fun. His backhanded... more>> compliments, devious schemes and sly, conniving way of thinking number just a few of the reasons I fell completely in love with this series. Legend of the Sun Knight is a definite must-read - plus there's a sequel! (I'll only be reading it when more chapters come out tho)

"Child, from this day forth you are the successor to the position of Sun Knight. So long as you stand firm in the face of tribulation, grow in courage with each trial you encounter, and defend your knights honour no matter what difficulty or temptation you face, you will receive from my hands the title of Sun Knight the day you come of age."

"Teacher, may I recant my decision?"

"No!"

"Why?"

"Because I forgot to choose a back-up Sun Knight."

In case you don't get the gist of the story from the synopsis, the story is set in a fantasy world - no reincarnation here - that is divided into different kingdoms with three main religions.

Our main character, Grisia (known to his friends and reader fans as 'Sun'), belongs to the religion of the God of Light. He is the Sun Knight - the leader of the knights of the Benevolent faction of the God of Light. As a result, he is expected to fulfil certain requirements - always be kind, helpful, generous, merciful, etc.

Basically the exact opposite of Sun's personality, which is one of the driving forces that makes this story so hilarious.

This is the life of a Sun Knight, to forever wear a smile and forgive others.

This is because, as the entire continent knows, the Sun Knight is the benevolent spokesperson of the God of the Light and he will never give up on the redemption of any individual!

Thus, even if I actually really want to kill that fat pig of a king with a single stab of my sword and make that old bugger who refuses to die hurry up and pass the throne on to his far more pleasant son, I cannot. I can only continue to wear a brilliant smile, walk over, and do my best to persuade that fat pig of a king to stop collecting more taxes.

His relationships with the other knights are equally hysterical and the bromance moments had me fangirling all over the place XD. For example, take the Judgement Knight - the leader of the Cruel faction of the God of Light. He acts as the Sun Knight's dark counterpart as a way to maintain balance and is supposed to be the totally dark, cold, mysterious, badass rival of the Sun Knight. When in public, they are required to argue and disagree over the tiniest details, but in reality, the two of them are secretly best friends and Judge is SUPER SWEET and caring - the total opposite of the wicked, scheming Sun.

To give you an example of one of the interactions between Sun and Judge:

"You have not concerned yourself with the judging of criminals for a while now, Sun. I thought that you had finally understood that only the harshness of the God of Light can bring an end to their criminal ways."

I understood what he meant by those words. My good friend was complaining that I had not come to chat with him for such a long time.

"The God of Light's benevolence does not exist within the Church alone. The palace, too, requires the illumination of benevolence, and His Majesty the king thirsts for the teachings of the God of Light more than anyone else."

Meaning I was dispatched to 'educate'

that pig of a king.

"His Majesty the king surely treats you with scorn. Only the God of Light's harshness can make him aware of the perils he faces."

It must have been really tough, dealing with that pig of a king. Judgment gave me a sympathetic look.

"Through the efforts of Storm Knight, His Majesty the king was able to experience and comprehend the God of Light's benevolence."

If it weren't for Storm that fat pig would still be unwilling to back down and lower taxes.

Etcetera, etcetera. Of course not all their conversations are like this - just whenever they're in public.

Basically, the series is all about Sun's misadventures during his tenure as the Sun Knight and all the mishaps and mayhem he causes with his devious schemes. If you're looking for a series with magic, intrigue,

If you're looking for a series with magic, intrigue, and, scores of bishounen to fangirl over and secretly ship together, then you've come to the right place. If you're looking for a light read with lots of magic, bishounen and laughter, this is the perfect series. (No really - it's hilarious. Read it.)

"Child, your lesson for today is to drink wine."

"What? But teacher, doesn't the Sun Knight have a low tolerance for drink?"

"The Sun Knight always forgives others, but have you ever really forgiven someone?"

"No."

"The Sun Knight always wears a smile, but how many times have you really smiled from the bottom of your heart?"

"Only a few times"

"The Sun Knight is a benevolent spokesperson, but are you really benevolent?"

"..."

"Child, if you have a low tolerance for drink, then how are you going to make sure that after drinking, you'll still be able to maintain the image of the Sun Knight as someone who turns red on the first cup, has a headache with the second cup, and topples over unconscious after the third?

So you see, the idea that the Sun Knight has low tolerance for drink is actually founded on the premise that the Sun Knight cannot be defeated by drink."

This argument might sound really reasonable, but when I think about it carefully, it seems to be full of contradictions as well!

"Drink up, child. You have to drink wine every night for the next month, until you can drink wine like it's just water."

The year I turned twelve, I became someone who could drink wine as easily as water, an undefeatable drinker, all for the sake of the Sun Knight's image as a lightweight drinker. <<less

The Twelve Holy Knights remain unchanged through the generations.
And the law and justice they represent will forever remain unchanged as well.
Even when everything else changes with time... some things will never change.
The Sun Knight will never change.
The eleven brothers standing by his side will never change either,
A little pretense in exchange for eleven brothers, what a good deal!

I am crying, The Legend of the Sun knight book series is just too perfect? And yes, it also has a manhua adaptation that... more>> covered the first two volumes perfectly, but you should still read these books.

I don't remember the last time I laughed so much when it came to high fantasy? The ideas, the characters, the main character's POV? All of it is hilarious, sarcastic, and just freaking amazing? I cannot even begin to describe the lunacy and greatness of this book.

This story made a new definition of stereotypes. 12 knights, who are supposed to follow the stereotype of their respective original knight's personality, traits, appearance and even daily duties and speech, have to stay true even to their mutual relationships.

""Remember, child, no matter what the circumstances are, the Sun Knight is always perfect!"

Additional information: "Child, even if you've unintentionally discovered the Sun Knight's imperfection, you had better just admit that he's perfect unless you want to experience his imperfection yourself."

These books follow the journey of the Sun Knight, the most graceful, charismatic, merciful, elegant and kind knight who is everything not described here. He is the sheer opposite of the personality he is supposed to play. So what happens, when a Death Knight appears - a raised corpse who has a goal he needs to fulfill in order to rest in piece - and says he will come back for the Sun Knight? Well, that puts our Sun Knight as a prime suspect of the Death Knight's grugde.

How to deal with it? Find a necromancer.

► CHARACTERS:

Warm faction:

◈ Grisia Sun: the actual main character, who is expected to be the most elegant, graceful (even when dying or falling down the stairs or fainting), always smiling, benevolent and kindhearted is actually sadistic, grudge holding, sarcastic, unrelenting, brave, dedicated, overprotective and kind towards the people he loves, but he would also use every opportunity to make them owe him favors, do his work and just be lazy in general. He also wants a girlfriend, badly. His best friend is Judgment Knight, who is supposed to be his biggest enemy as he is the leader of the Cold faction and does everything opposite of the Sun Knight. And yet, these two are the true besties, unlike him and Earth, who are supposed to be "besties" but are actually the biggest enemies.

◈Ceo Storm: is supposed to be carefree, never to appear, big flirt with women, always to wink in their presence (also has to dye his hair into blue) but is in actuality a big work a holic and will probably die from correcting all of the documents they throw at him. If he was gone the whole church would colapse!

◈ Georgo Earth: the "honest" and "loyal" and "friend" of the Sun Knight. You can scratch the honest part, because his words are more poisonous than Metal's! He hates Grisia with passion!

◈ Elmairy Leaf: An archer and the nicest person there is. Too interesting that his personality actually matches the first Leaf knight. A mother to the team in a way (but unlike Ice being one), he supports everyone and would do anything for them. Also worries a lot.

◈ Demos Cloud: A drifter who is always there, even when you don't see him. He usually reads books and is librarian, knows all, is super great swordsman and very hard to find. His tragic past allowed him to find peace in duties of the Cloud knight.

◈Chikus Blaze: Another knight whose real personality matches perfectly with the personality of the first knight. He is hot tempered, loves breaking doors (but some doors should never be broken) and specializes in cleansing spirits. Loves Sun Knight with passion. Worries a lot and regrets a lot if he hurts someone by accident.

Cold-hearted faction

◈ Lesus Judgement: The leader of the cruel faction. He must never forgive criminals and must exact punishment on them or give the order for it. The criminals must never be forgiven. Yet, it's a duty and personality that is opposite of what he is: trully kind hearted, brother figure, that cares a lot about his brothers and would never abandon any of them, no matter what the cost. He is the only one the Sun Knight will listen to.

◈ Ecilan Ice: supposed to be always calm, collected, and never to show any emotions, and yet he loves summer because he can make people eat his sweets and ice cream, actually feeds the team and is their actual mother figure.

◈Vival Moon: Arrogant, narcissistic and acts like no one is good enough to be in his presence. Actually would do anything for his team (after a bit of persuasion (for example, dealing with Metal's situation on Judgment's query). Only wants a girlfriend who is higher than him.

◈Laica Metal: The knight whose words are supposed to be so bad, that they are poisonous and offensive always. Yet, the problem is that when he tries to do it, he gives out compliments and when he is not trying, he actually succeeds in making people bleed from his words. He gets happy every time someone tells him he was offensive! Not to mention that he hides a deep insecurity that he solves by having a certain tendencies that Moon and Judgment help him out with. idolizes Judgment wayyyyyyyyy too much.

◈ Aivis Stone: As first knight was so stubborn, so should be all of his successors. Yet this Stone is so stubborn for believing that he is not stubborn that he actually fits well with his role.

◈ And finally, the Hell Knight: a shadow Knight who is said to be the shadow of the Sun Knight, but he is never around that some of them think that he doesn't even exist and that he is in actuality, actual Sun Knight's alter ego! Even though he belongs to the cruel cold faction, he answers dirrectly to the Sun knight.

◈ Adair: Grisia's vice captain. will always defend Grisia from anything, is completely loyal, omnipotent, dedicated, and would do anything to keep Grisia safe. Grisia doesn't deserve him, honestly.

◈ Pink: a necromancer that is over two tho- very young girl who is contracted by a church to make undead for the Sun Knight to have something to went out his frustrations on, because the Sun Knight hates nothing more than undead creatures! She is mysterious, filled with many secrets, and hides them well. She has an agenda that may or may not endanger everyone...

◈ Mysterious Death Knight: a resurected person who holds a grudge against the living. To become Death Knight, one must suffer extreme regret/injustice and the only way to kill them or save them is by burning them to the second death, or find the cause of his regret. So why does he want to kill the Sun Knight? Well....

► OVERALL:

Thankfully the series is over, and I recommend it to anyone (ofc I haven't read it on chinese, but it's too perfect, you should try it if you want something for a change).

(I just copy pasted the review from my goodreads, username: Kristalia ♥loves tragedies♥ (◕‿◕✿))

BOOK 2 OPINIONS:

Spoiler

Final rating: 5/5 stars

"From now on, the Sun Knight Platoon will have to run one round within the walls of the city every morning!" I said fiercely.
Upon receiving the order, Adair was stunned and his expression seemed to be a bit troubled.
"What? You can't do it? Are you still fit to be called knights?" On the surface, I was roaring with much energy, but in my heart I was a bit unsettled. How far is a round within the city walls? Maybe it's too far?
All of the Sun Knight Platoon members went silent.
Looking at this situation, maybe one round within the city really is very far. Should I cut it to half a round? But I have already set the command, so how am I to take it back...
At this moment, Ed seemed to have gathered up his courage as he said, "Captain, when you first met us five years ago you had set a command for us to run five rounds. Then three years ago you became angry when our physical performance lost to the Judgment Knight Platoon so you commanded us to run three rounds. At that time, Adair thought that you meant to add three rounds, so we have been running eight rounds for the past three years. Now... "
"... Now what I meant is add one more round, is there a problem?"

How can these books be better than a lot of books I've read before? I don't know, but it's true.

This book is a mess of a thousand events, all ending up with one and intervening perfectly.

Also, it's too hilarious and filled with great and moving scenes.

God, I love the characters so much. The only thing I do mind is not having female character (s) in bigger roles, but even this princess was interesting. Amazing. Just amazing.

This volume is about:
1. What Rolland and Pink are up to.
2. You get to know the Sun Knight's platoon of idiots (Adair is the greatest vice captain Sun ever chose)
3. The Hell Knight problem - you see, the Hell Knight, or Elias, wants to quit, and marry the princess.
4. The Son of the God of War also wants to marry the princess.
5. The Sun Knight also wants to marry the princess-
Wait what?

And that final chapter with Hell's POV was fantastic :D Just fantastic.

BOOK 3:

Spoiler

Final rating: 4.75/5 stars

"Also, as to why I was so determined to train a spell caster into a knight, there is another very important reason."
Hearing that, the green-cloaked traveler asked seriously, "Why is that?"
The gray-cloaked traveler turned around and looked gravely at his companion. He explained slowly and painfully, "Because, back then, I forgot to choose a back-up knight!"

Just a bit weaker than the previous book, the third book still doesn't disappoint. One could say, almost perfect. Nothing more, nothing less. I still laughed way too much and there were few extremely moving scenes, not to mention the ending, which surprised me!

► STORY:

A princess is kidnapped, a future bride of the Son of God of War, Mike, and the condition from kidnapper is that Mike forms an adventurer team and come to get them. What Sun was not expecting was that he and Leaf were gonna become party members. As an archer and a cleric (But Sun is not a cleric, he is clearly a Holy Knight! Ahem...). Ofc his first choice would have been either Judgment or Hell Knight, but apparently, both are unable to come so he had to stick with the nicest guy in the universe, an archer and the pure cutie, the Leaf Knight - Elmairy (or Elmy) !

*If you haven't read up to this volume, and wish to remain unspoiled - just in case, then don't read further than this*

Thus begins the quest for saving the princess and encountering people Grisia Sun would never want to meet again, because one of them has gold hair, blue eyes and is enough to make even Grisia wish for an escape... The second person though, however, is a dark elf, a despised race, because they are apparently "evil and tricky" bunch.

So the biggest problem is... How to deal with the current situation?

The answer is simple: follow the stereotypes of rescuing the princess, until something unexpected happens.

Short answer: Never ruffle Sun's feathers, because he will never forget any wrongdoings upon him or people he cares about, especially his knights.

"Yeah!" Ed, who was behind him suddenly cut in. "No matter how weird he is, he can't be as weird as our captain!"
... Has it really been so long since I last kicked someone down the cliff?

[collapse]

BOOK 4:

Spoiler

What does it matter if I can't learn any sword skills?
Even if I'm not like my teacher, the strongest Sun Knight in history, my Twelve Holy Knights strengthened with my holy spells will become "The Strongest Twelve Holy Knights in history"!
There is nothing in the world that can bypass them to harm me! Even if I can't use a sword, there is nothing worth my fear!

I honestly wonder if this series will ever stop amazing me? Like, honestly. Why is it so great? Because it breaks stereotypes and is unpredictable in most cases.

Especially this one. It has the most shocking beginning and definitely the strangest plot so far, because this is Grisia in his raw - honest to the light god - self. He doesn't hold any punches and this is the point where Grisia... is Grisia, without any constraints. Why? Because Grisia was attacked, ended up severly injured, got telleported to another kingdom, and got amnesia! (He was also rescued by the group of adventurers he, Neo and Aldrizzt encountered in the cave in book 3 and ended up hunting the unicorn! (Don't even ask)).

And then there is Scarlet... a tiny mysterious girl who stalks Sun Grisia.

And finally, this book focuses on Ice and Blaze knights. I will just say... They don't have any great time this time around (like Leaf/Hell/etc before, seriously Sun, wtf are you doing to your knights that you love so much?), especially Ice. Although we do get to see his true self, as a caring mother, unrelenting person and the one who really cares about Sun.

Anyway, the conclusion: do not piss of Judgment Knight.

This series is fun, wonderful, with amazing world building, so go for it. it's damn great.

[collapse]

BOOK 5:

Spoiler

He staggered, but he still managed to stand upright. He even lifted his head, and with a bitter smile, he said, "Grisia... No, you are not Grisia. Even if it had been Grisia, he would not kill us. Grisia is already dead. He's long dead. You are only, only... "
I am... ?
Lesus, Lesus! Don't collapse, tell me...
What exactly am I?

So, I kinda miss the hilariousness of the first two volumes, but damn, this is actually the first one to make me bowl my eyes out (i cried a river, seriously!). Before you ask - it was resolved, so there were no more tears involved. But my heart cried out.

How is it impossible to write serious reviews for these books? Oh my god! Why? Why is it so damn hard?

Anyway, this time, Earth and Cloud are forced to be Sun's bodyguards, but Sun wouldn't be Grisia if he didn't manage to screw it up and screw it up gloriously by acting on his own, aka, this is the book where Grisia finally finds out that sometimes it's better to share your worries, then hide them and have to suffer severe consequences. Judgment and Sun are actually very similar in this matter. Both have hidden things from their own holy knights, and it's starting to piss them off.

On the other hand, Grisia does feel a lot of regret over hurting Ice and Blaze in the past, not to mention leaving Leaf when he needed him the most, and he can't get over it so much that it resulted in very realistic nightmares.

As the books go, we find out more and more about other knights, but we never should forget that the real protagonist is only one - Grisia! But, I loved reading about other knights, about how interesting and mysterious Scarlet is, about Pink who is back again and ofc Aldrizzt and Neo!

Ah, what a charming reunion.

Just... it was so great to finally see the entire squad of holy knights act as a single unit.

[collapse]

BOOK 6:

Spoiler

Blaze and Leaf instantly rushed out of the room, while Earth gave a sigh, and idly said, "It's one thing after another. The Demon King is coming, Sun is broken. This time it really is the end of the world!"

Um... What just happened? That ending... did I read it right? Oh... oh my god?

At this point, the main story and the main point of this whole novel starts. Judgment is hiding something from Grisia, and Grisia is willing to let it go and never find out about it. After almost losing him in the previous book, maybe some things are better left unsaid.

But again, some things are better left said - no matter what they are. This time the book focused on the issue of the Demon King, ruler of the Shadow God Church.

And one is about to be born in Leaf Bud City - city of the Twelve Holy Knights. And no one is particularly happy about that. Awaitsun came as a Silent Eagle of the Church of the Shadow God and he and other countries support the birth of the Demon King: because if the Demon king is not born, then the world will be destroyed by darkness (if he is born, then the world has 50/50 chance of survival, depending on the Demon King).

To choose a demon king, there are three candidates... And no one knows who they are (yet). But, if one thinks about it, it's pretty obvious who the first two candidates would be.

To become a demon king, the easiest way is to kill the other candidate and absorb their element.

And this time, we have 3 guides of the candidates, the immortal leaches, who want nothing more than ensure their "child" becomes the demon king!

As for the ending itself... I actually did not see that one coming! And the epilogue slayed me, because... just... I couldn't believe it.

Also, I love how his knights all tease Sun, like, I'm laughing so much hahaha. (Sun does not deserve Adair, his vice captain, honestly). Oh right, and Metal Knight's secret is well... actually good for Sun (oh my god, that whole part with his secret made me just... laugh/cry? Oh my god?)

There are also Stephen and Charlotte, new characters and shadowpriest and a knight from the Cathedral of the Shadow god, and Charlotte is very much a fun of Sun Knight.

BOOK 7

Spoiler

Earth's face froze, and he turned his head to ask Storm, "Do I have to be here to watch him bathe?"
"Captain Judgment wanted us to watch over Sun, " Storm quietly assessed. "So you have two options. Number one, violate Knight-Captain Judgment's orders. Number two, see Sun's naked body."
"... F***!"
F*** what? In any case, I am actually a fair and beautiful man, with a head of long blond hair, and now because of sleeping for half a year I am malnourished and too thin. Simply by looking at my figure from behind, I might actually look very much like a lady... Wait a minute! Come to think of it, later on when I bathe, there will be three men staring at me?
F***!

This book was blissfully hilarious, as were the previous volumes, but also very serious. Okay so: a bit of a warning. This review actually contains spoilers for the previous book! I couldn't avoid it, sadly!

Following the freaking cliffhanger from the previous books, this one continues half a year later. Sun has - in those past few months - actually gone insane. And the moment he wakes up, everyone still believes that he is insane as an effect of the spell they used on him. Side effects being: randomly shouting, having nightmares, and desperately trying to kill himself (even acting that he was sane so he could off himself). This put all of the knights on edge, not to mention the pressure they faced from other parties.

After all, the Demon King turned back to the candidate, and he cannot control darkness unless Grisia dies. And as he was insane, and coulnd't challenge DK, this was the situation.

And thus begins the quest for Grisia (now fully aware) to confront the DK, along with his band of missnamed Knight Captains and one vice captain.

"Henceforth, we're not allowed to use the titles Sun, Storm, Metal, and Moon. We'll just directly call each other by our real names. Is that okay?"
"Only you would have a problem with that!" Metal... No, rather, Laica yelled, "If you dare to continue calling me Slime, you better watch out! I'm Laica!"
Everyone reported their names one-by-one.
"I'm Ceo!" Ceo smiled extremely radiantly, seeming to hint that if I were to call his name wrongly one more time, he was going to make me meet my "death"!
"I'm Vival." Moon repeated it seriously, "Vi. Va. L. And definitely not 'Voila'!"
If you read Vival a little faster, isn't it "Voila"? I only read it a little too fast, that's all!
"Tyler." Tyler helplessly said, "Knight-Captain Sun, please don't call me Tyre anymore."

And this quote actually summarizes the entire series so well:

Storm glared at me. "For this entire year, first it was you going blind, then it was Judgment dying, and then you dying. Even after you were revived, you were in an insane state. Hell Knight becoming the Demon King, lands of death encroaching further and further, the Cathedral of the Shadow God wanting you dead... Which one of these is not earth-shattering? It's not easy to scare us nowadays!"

]

And finally: everyone mistaking Sun for a woman. That was interesting.

"Sun, you are still so... " He laughed, shook his head, and said, "How in the world should I describe you?"
I suggested, "You can say that I am astonishingly wise and astute!"
"You are shameless and despicable!" Laica roared.
Laica, you're not a princess! Only princesses like to describe me with 'shameless' and 'despicable.'

Only one book left... Sigh.. I don't want it to end.

BOOK 8:

Everyone should read this series, it is so amazing that it reminded me that not all first person POVs are bad! This is a work of art! It is so hard to say goodbye to one of your favorite series... I am kidding, this monster of a series has one more novel that's about the next generation and bunch of side stories! And even 19 of them (or so?) !

Anyway, it is always a hard task to make a character that was your narrator for a long time completely change, yet still be the same old character who acts on his own previous instincts, memories and actions. This is a very hard task and I think it was done very well.

Honestly, the beginning was a bit slow and well... not really captivating as all beginnings of the previous books but ever since a certain person appears - that Sun can't do anything without, aka - well, that's when things get absolutely more interesting.

Considering this is the final volume of the stories of the 38th generation of the Holy Knights, I will talk about everyone in the character section. All of them were just amazing and I loved it.

The only thing this series might lack is a constant female character, but there are many of them through the series, but sadly I disliked most of them. I believe my final favorites would be Pink, Scarlet and Alice. They weren't those weak and s*upid stereotypes after all. More like scary and manipulative. Which is what I loved.

Anyway, there were parts I bawled my eyes out, and laughed like a maniac. That's nothing new, honestly, when it comes to this series.
Spoiler

► STORY:

*Spoilers for the previous volume, so skip this:*

The Demon King has been born, and he is not planning on returning to the seat of the Sun Knight ever again! Which is very troublesome, because Grisia's real personality was actually just enough for him to tip over the edge of morality.

First, he is terribly bored. So he goes out and randomly joins adventurer party and decides to make one of them a hero that will try to kill the Demon King, while pretending to be their companion. He just loves abusing Awaitsun (partly because he still holds grudge over him killing Leaf), and is highly doubting his loyalty. Not to mention Illu who is completely loyal to Roland, yet, Grisia managed to "convince" him to work for him while keeping Roland's wellbeing over his head.

There is only one person, in the entire world, who might be able to keep him in check and he arrives just in time... But is he the person who will be able to help him go back to before, or will follow all of his commands?

In the meantime, Lesus is having an army advance towards the Demon King. He will not let Grisia get away from his duties as a Sun Knight, because they are lost without him.

► CHARACTERS:

There are like so many characters so let's do this: (actually non spoilery much)

Grisia Sun: Even though he changed, a lot of him stayed in his subconsciousness. Even though he loves bullying his own knights, he would never allow another party to bully them instead. He is very protective, possessive and cruel in this book, but when you look at it, hasn't he always been this way? Just raise those traits and lower his kindness, consideration and thoughtfulness and you will see that he is... in a way, still the same, just balanced out.

"Lesus, the first time I cast Resurrection, I lost my eyes, the Sun Knight's blue eyes. The second time was the Sun Knight's golden hair. The third time even my affinity for the holy element disappeared. What do you think the God of Light means?"

Lesus Judgment: Still the cold on the outside, yet calculative, extremely caring, the actual big brother of the group, he does everything in his power to return their own leader to the Holy Knights. No matter what methods he or his subordinates may use, he will never relent in setting out what needs to be done.

"But Sun is definitely not a weak and useless person! He chooses to take responsibility, and sometimes he even takes on too much. He uses everything in his power to prevent the people he cares about from getting hurt. But you, the Demon King, are a person who chooses to run away."

Ceo Storm: a workaholic who needs more rest than anything, yet is there for everyone and supporting as they go, he honestly just needs a damn break. Out of all the characters, Ceo is one of my favorites so far. Without him the whole Holly temple would collapse, honestly.

Georgo Earth: even though he started on unfriendly terms with his own Captain, Grisia, he still wants him back, despite their arguments and their fall outs, he still cares about Sun.

Elmairy Leaf: The kindest knight, both in his stereotypical personality and his real personality, he was constantly in grief over everything Sun has done for him and lost for him, and yet he is not able to help...

Demos Cloud: an unknown support to many of them, he will come out from the shadow when you least expect it, yet you can still count on him to be there.

Chikus Blaze: much like his steretypic personality, he is hot tempered and easy to lose his patience, but still great support in the times of need and is one who pretty much idolises the Sun Knight.

Ecilan Ice: Even though he has to be emotionless a lot of time, it's possible to break through and see his own personality come out. There is nothing he cares about more than his own team, his brothers. And would suffer many things, just to make it right. Truly a mother of their team.

Vival Moon: even though he has his own perks, he would help doing whatever it takes, no matter what.

Laica Metal: who gets so happy when he finds out that he actually managed to offend someone without even trying (his teacher would be so proud), yet he still tries his best to give compliments too!

Aivis Stone: the "stubborn" person who refuses to be stubborn by actually being stubborn because he refuses to be stubborn. Did I confuse anyone?

Rolland Hell : who is at loss. He feels tremendous guilt over allowing Grisia to do what he wanted, and knowing that he could have stopped it. Yet, everyone else supports him, because after all - he is one of them.

Adair: the character that is so high on my list of favorite characters, that he might break the roof - there is only one thing worth mentioning: no one deserves a Vice Captain such as Adair. He would do anything, and I mean EVERYTHING for Grisia. That's how much he loves and respects him, even if what he has to do will hurt him, he was always one of those who managed to change Grisia's opinions on the matter. Even if Grisia didn't keep up what he promised, he was still there for him.

"At the time, Knight-Captain Storm and the others had all returned, yet you had not. Because of that, I felt somewhat... lost, so I did not particularly notice him."

The new adventurer party: Of which the most notable is Taylen, the one Grisia choose as a hero, who holds his own secrets. I wish there were more about them, but this was nice too.

Elaro: Who chose to walk the path Grisia suggested to him (even though a bit too early!), yet he sees the things in Grisia other people can't...

"Well, perhaps it was because of your brilliant smile!"

Awaitsun and Alice : who follow the Demon Kings commands, as much as possible. Although Awaitsun is having a hard time doing it, and somewhat regrets supporting Grisia on this matter, because no matter what he did, Grisia was never satisfied and took it out on him. Which, in a way, was actually the point of his whole life: as a duty of the Silent Eagle is to take the brunt of demon king's anger. He deserves so much better, honestly. (As well as Illu who cares about his own creator, Rolland). Alice on the other hand, became even scarrier! Just try to avoid babysitting her children!

Scarlet and Pink and Stephen: the undying that only wanted their own children to stay alive, prosper and do their roles, and help them in their times of need. Yet out of three, only two of their children survived.

► SHORT STORIES SECTION:

I will include the fact that I also read the short stories, and Unbeatable and the short stories about Cloud and the stories of when they were all children were quite awesome. Also, I never expected for Cloud to have such a big trauma, and I believe that Cloud's drifting made him rest for a while, but also explained why he was always willing to say "yes" - because he was traumatized to the point of never saying "no" as a reply.

Or how Metal's

Or how poor Storm was so shy he couldn't even look at the girls, and Grisia helped him by making him do Sun's documents and then explaining what needs to be done...

And how Grisia was chosen for the Sun Knight, Chasel Judgment's history, Aldrizzt and Neo's relationship and how they first met...

I loved them all!

► OVERALL:

Amazing conclusion, with a strong and well thought of ending. There were just a few questions - I wish I knew what happened to certain characters after the end of the crusade. But I have another sequel and bunch of short stories, so that might explain what happened to his

Best chinese novel I had ever read. Compare to WN and Xianxia Novels, the fanbase is small but doesn't mean it's bad. It is a rare hidden jem among hidden gems. I don't think anyone will regret finishing it.

Reasons why this novel is my favorite:

Unusual comedy that will make you laugh.

... more>> Awesome characters. 12 knights with their own quirkiness. 12 assumed personalities, 12 weird personalities

Shamless MC. I love the main character. He is evil, shameless and funny but needs to show a compasionate, smilling and graceful appearance in front of everyone.

like other CN, it also has... kinda...

An arrogant narcistic antagonist like character (the MC is already it.)

Some beauty with jade-like white skin (again the MC is already it! Dammit! He has smooth silky jade white skin. HE!)

Plus.

You don't have to wait 4yrs+ for updates because its completed. consider yourself lucky. I think I started reading this 4 yrs ago and that time it was at around v3? Many thanks to the translation team with their quality translations and PDFs <<less

This is actually my favorite Yu Wo novel. I love the Sun Knight though the one I want to marry is the Judgement Knight. The plot is full of funny scenes. I love how Grisia fears Lisus.
Spoiler

When it comes to the real plot, it started good and ended awesome. I'm in awe of Yu Wo's antics where she turned the greatest Sun Knight into a Demon King.

At first, it's kind of funny, but you may have mixed feelings about the unbelievable premise. Generation after generation of knights each pretending to be someone they're not, never going wrong? But it makes it all the more touching when Grisia ultimately says, "A little pretense in exchange for eleven brothers, what a good deal!" It takes a while for each of the ensemble cast members to come into their own, but they do.

I found this series somewhat fun, and very emotionally touching towards the end. Memorable characters, clever plots,... more>> good running gags, and often-predictable but still-appreciable twists. It's written by a woman, which is great for a change from the other things I've been reading on here, and it has some cool perspectives on some classic tropes like the evil demon king. I didn't burn with a desire to binge the whole thing, but it's only 80-90 chapters and it feels well-planned and neatly tied up without overstaying its welcome.

It's also well translated with ample footnotes to explain puns and the like. <<less

This review is different from most of the rest.

  • 'Dude, where are the 5 stars?' you may ask right away. 'It doesn't deserve it.' I respond. Some novels get higher rating because they attract a particular audience- more 'fanatics' means higher (excessively so) ratings. This could be my 'disclaimer' for a bulk of overpraised 'fluffy appeal' work- where the content is more image (usually cutesy) focused, and 'writing issues' are unseen/forgiven without fail.

I guess you can say this is a 'turn your brain off before reading' kind of story, which isn't the kind of writing that I'd give 5 stars...

I didn't expect a lot, but I was quickly shown a lot I didn't expect. I honestly was thinking I was reading the wrong story for a bit because 'no way should this be rated 5 stars by so many'. Then I double checked, then realized it was a 'fluffy appeal' work, and resigned myself to the fact it was over-rated 'because cute'.
Ok, that out of the way...

The GOOD:

  • This is actually somewhat creative and mostly interesting.
  • Some interpersonal character dynamics are novel, and present some interesting displays of 'image' vs 'reality'.
  • From what I can tell, the translators did a great job- especially with annotations. Considering the style of writing, I'd daresay they likely even improved the quality while acting as editors.
The Bad:

  • In short, this is very much presented as a cartoon' world. I don't just mean 'it's comedy/funny' (it is actually funny at times) - I mean it's got that unstable 'for the moment' gags/escalation dynamic to it. It acts like it wants to be a plot developing fantasy story with a section even devoted to doing detective work- while in actuality it's frequently peppered with illogical nonsense.
    • So much made up 'this is why' nonsense to force actions, behaviors, etc. Lots of narrative set-ups and narrative wrap ups to make/fix things that otherwise could logically go elsewhere. Everything about the story is forced. The excuse is 'comedy', but even for that, it's overdone:
    • Plotting is forced
    • 'Reasons why people do things' are frequently forced, and often consist of made-up nonsense.
  • The MC is in 'intelligent' idiot, and forced to remain in his position by nonsense. Actually, most of the Holy Knights seem to be suffering 'quality of life' issues that would be easily rectified by doing anything else, as 'this isn't all it was cracked up to be'.
  • All the knights are doing 'Kayfabe' all the time, & mostly without an audience, 'for the LOLs' of the readers. Even if it makes sense in public (ok, whatever) - the fact that the 'actors' themselves don't know everyone else is 'acting' is honestly sad and/or terrifying.
    • If you don't know what 'Kayfabe' is, it's when professional wrestlers (the staged match, 'for entertainment' type) never 'break character' in public, and pretend everything scripted/staged is actually all legit.
      Spoiler

Oh- you know pro-wrestling is staged, right?

      [collapse]
  • Doing 'one-off, for lols' jokes which actually develop world canon is super-sloppy nonsense. The big, ongoing 'carrot & stick' schtick of the story seems to be that they (the holy knights) are 'huge, respectable, idolized foundations of society, responsible for setting role models and peacekeeping the society', whle at the same time they are 'paid sh*t compared to everyone, are constantly bullied/pressured by everyone, have a bunch of in-fighting with no mediation, and have to provide for their own retirement' because somehow that makes sense. 'All work, almost no reward'?- yes, it's comedy, but even for comedy, it's a bit much.
  • Lots of convenient 'people who do their job badly' and 'corruption, though we're supposed to do something about that'. Again, 'comedy'- but the imbalance of 'do all this for us', vs 'we'll turn on you in a second' makes the story less acceptable to anyone who dares to ask the question 'Why does Sun put up with this shit?' (not to mention 'how the hell could this kingdom possibly survive for so long?'
The Different:

  • Some of the 'nuanced speak' is clever (where one thing is said, while it's 'subtitled' to translate into it's actual meaning).
  • There are some interesting ideas here and there which could go somewhere, though it doesn't seem like the author is doing more than adding random stuff on impulse.
Overall:

In fairness, I've read too little to say with any certainty 'How good this actually is'. I posted this early because there are way too many 'this is great' reviews, and it's not fair to people expecting it to actually be that good.

I can see it being 'over-praised because cute', and can even see people overlooking the number of flaws it has which makes it more of a challenge to read.

If you think I over-analyzed this, or expected too much/didn't understand why it's funny (etc.) - just jump to one of the fluffy 'this was great' reviews which dominate- they've got it locked down.

In reality, this story has issues. I honestly don't think it's bad, but 'in fairness', some of the 'writing style' choices of the author made, make it less than 'great'.

I will try to read more in the hopes that it gets better. Feel free to PM me if you know it will and want to encourage me, or you know it won't and want to save me wasting my time.

Out of all of Yu Wo’s stuff, I like this series the best. The Characters stick to their personalities throughout the thing, and the introduction of plot isn’t all that bad. Our MC’s change in characters are still fun to read and the fights are nice since our MC isn’t really in the need to fight. All he does is comment about other’s fight or uses OP to win... so yea...

Romance? Please, he’s the Sun Knight... forever a virg*n and all...

Best character? Judgement...

Most hated character? Damn playboy... more>> Earth...

Memorable aspects? Our self-sacrificing MC. <<less

I definitely dragged my feet in the last parts of the novel in order to finish it.

The Legend of Sun Knight is definitely a pretty unique idea: a comedy novel focusing on our MC, the sun knight, a person with great power and responsibility, and his subordinates, the 12 holy knights.

So, what's exactly good about this novel? I found the monologue of the Sun knight and his contrasting dialogue with others to be interesting and funny. It's definitely very emphasized because that's where a lot of the comedy happens, and... more>> the author is not afraid to showcase it. The Sun knight's attitude and speech to numerous people like his subordinates, various kings, princesses, and so on in various situations make for a fresh beginning. It's lighthearted, and nothing particularly serious happens.

However, I have to say that this novel was at a crossroads near the beginning of the novel: focus on comedy? Or the action aspect? After all, this novel circles around a MC, who is a holy knight, and will, in various situations, be in conflict with others as a result of his responsibilities. The fact that the setting is a fantasy setting and that the holy knights have an obligation to defeat undead creatures, means that action is expected. And this is where the novel starts to fail, in both action, and in comedy.

It feels very jarring to read the funny monologue of the MC after he, lets say, just had a life or death situation, or just killed someone. These are just examples, but you get my point. The later and later the novel drags on, the more serious and story focused this novel becomes. Comedy gets slowly phased out after each volume completes. So, as a result, the comedy becomes a little stale, repetitive, and there isn't much freedom to have any comedy since story is the first priority.

The problem is, is that the characters are unfit for a serious storyline, and this is where the line dividing "comedy, " and "serious story/action" really become apparent. Characters that felt very funny to read about suddenly become bland and one dimensional. Of course, there are a few select characters that are well developed, but there are quite a lot of characters that are involved in the story. I mean, even only including the 12 holy knights, that's 12 people that have to fit in with the story. Some characters barely get mentioned at all, not even in passing as the novel goes on. There's a clear lack of commitment to dialogue and there's only focus on the characters at hand that are interacting with our MC.

At the beginning, where the focus was on comedy, it was good. But, since the novel divides its attention to both comedy and action at the same time, it starting becoming pretty bad. It's very tough to pull that off. Something like One piece has very select few parts of comedy, but it's very tame, unlike The Legend of Sun Knight, so it's not jarring. Gintama is a good example of both lots of comedy and action, though. Anyways, The Legend of Sun Knight didn't pull through to me in the end. <<less

While reading this novel, I found myself experiencing sudden mood swings. I would laugh one moment then cry at another.

This novel is one of best novels that has both sides of the same coin; hilarious but sad. First of all, the comedy is original, witty, and it fits in perfectly. The comedy is in sync with the plot and it’s beautifully inserted. U can find the comedy in a variety of elements, I.e dialogue, thoughts, actions, self image, and first impressions. Heck, the whole plot reeks of parody and gag.... more>> On the other hand, this novel is a tearjerker. It’s not the usual romantic tears or the cliche familial tears (not that there’s anything wrong). This is all about being bros. Yeah, that’s right, the BROMANCE. The friendship. The brotherhood. The bonds. The homies. Whatever word I use for it, this novel exhibits a rich taste of brotherly ties and their simple but deep relationship. It’s truly really beautiful and very precious. There are moments that are full of feels while there are moments that are full of laughs. No matter what, the transition between the two is so smooth, I don’t even notice the change in mood sometimes. At the same time, the mood is clear to see and very distinct.

The characters are just a bunch of idiots, honestly (except Judgement ?). Sun is more of an idiot than anybody else. He is useless when it comes to fighting but he is very badass. He is strong willed, decisive, and very selfless. Although, he is depicted as a selfish, arrogant, and cowardly being during his usual days, he will, no doubt, uses everything in his power when it comes to the people important to him, especially his fellow 11 brothers. He seems to care about many things like his self image but in truth, about the only thing he truly cares about is his holy knights and few other people, ie the pope or king (the son, not fat one).
Spoiler

He even once threatens the pope that the one thing that the pope can’t touch are the holy knights.

), Earth (surprisingly), Ice (marry me), Hell (BFF 2), and Blaze (fanboy). The others are not as close but they are also willing to risk it too. Not to mention, the pope, king, teacher, and the vice captain. They each have a distinct and unique personality and quirks. Finding out the secrets to each one of their quirks is one of the most enjoyable things.

Not only the are the characters one of the best, the plot is extraordinaryly exhilerating. It is like a roller coaster ride. It starts off with a slow and not much drama pace. It slowly accelerates. Then, things just got a sudden skydive. Drama and exciting plot lines kept popping up one after another towards the climax. It’s not stuffy, the pace is somewhat rushed a little, but it just makes you feel like sh*t is going down and getting real before u realize it. It’s like u accidentally stepped in the tail of a soft kitten and it turns savage and starts ravaging u. At first, the intricate and manipulative plot lines was really interesting and helps u open up to the characters. After that is just angst after angst after angst. It gets a whole sh*t crazier each time. At one point u think the conflict is over, u get three other conflict after. They are the climax type of conflicts, not just some side ones. Sometimes, it plays with u by giving u a light and funny side story type of event. Then, it turns out it’s many shades darker than u think. It was really enjoyable though. It uses a lot of literary devices too which surprises me because some novels I read are just like diaries. This novel has foreshadowing, and I mean A LOT, metaphors, repetition, symbols, etc. It makes the plot more of a bigass maze than some half assed word search. Honestly, it took me a second reading to understand everything that was said throughout the novel, especially that blatant foreshadowing in the very first prologue (for those that reread it, u probably noticed too

).

I just really love this novel. For once I actually do not ship these boys into indecent relationships because I was in awe of their strong bond. I feel like the theme of the story is that not everything is the same as is shown on the outside. This was shown through the characters’ personalities, the characters’ actions, the characters’ identities, and the plot events themselves. But what am I doing, giving a literary analysis. What I am trying to say is that I enjoyed this so much so that I can’t help but tell the world. <<less

One of the best books I have ever read, the MC is a huge troll and the story is really hilarious.

Yet the plot is amazing and the world building is alright, the twists in the story are great, the characters are a bunch of handsome men yeah, but there are relevant girls too. And while it seems like a BL-ish novel it really isn't, the MC is entirely straight.

Entertaining, worth reading, I spent all my savings just to collect all the books ; - ;)

I avoided this one like the plague for a long time. The series has a few tags I tend to dislike: Amnesia, Demon Lord, Demons, Priests, Religions, and it didn't have one's that I typically would want with a novel: character growth, maybe some romance.

I thought this would just be a standard cutout of a typical fantasy adventure novel, but I was very wrong. The 4.8/5 rating is not an oversight, this one is solid gold.

I'm writing this review to inform anyone who is avoiding reading this novel for... more>> any reason to just try it now. (Also you can read this before Female Warrior and be fine, but personally I'd read this first. I think the author has plans to add to the female warrior series even though it's marked as completed (from what I read on the extras of female warrior volume 2). Either way, that's worth reading too.

This series is a MUST READ. <<less

hohoho... one of my favourite books ever!! My very first CN.

Grisia is the most adorable black-bellied MC. When I started reading the first book, I almost brushed it off as too childish. Luckily I continued on and am I glad.

Initially it comes across as a very light hearted story of Grisia the troll and his band of knights (all of whom have their adorable quirks) I thought it was quite childish. As you read on, the plot becomes increasingly complex and dark. Deceit, sacrifice, bromance and friendship intertwine as you... more>> delve deeper into the story and see Grisia grow as a person. Its brilliant how the humour is maintained throughout - laugh out loud moments combined with dark humour.

You wont regret reading this! Perfect shoujo fare despite the lack of a romantic line. <<less

Id recommend to read this.

It might look long winded for the first chapters, but believe me and stick with it.

The 12 knights interractions are the gems of this book. Do you know how in typical xianxia they have to dumb down other characters to make the MC look smart? Well in here we have a smart MC doing dumb shid while side characters try their best to ignore what the MC did coz they didnt want to get trapped in his schemes.

Funny and light hearted, I ended up reading it all in one sitting. Translation quality was also top notch! Highly recommend for those looking for something to cheer themselves up.

Great story, likable characters. Love the friendship between knights who are supposed to hate each other. The only thing missing in this story is romance.

Recommend. I recommend this. I recommend this very very much.
I never had an all time favorite until now. I don't know what to comment on, I'll never be able to understand how and if anyone dislikes this.
I'm so proud of the characters, how they are still living their lives. Sun and Judgement, I bloody love them. They've went through so much I'm so happy for them. Always sitting on tenterhooks asking them to be more careful. Cherish themselves more.
I'm also so envious of the knight's relationship. More... more>> than once did I wonder whether I could achieve that, whether I could make that kind of friends, build a similar bond with someone, anyone.
I repeat, I fully recommend this book. <<less
