This was more disappointing than anything else.

Complete at 50 main chapters, 14 side chapters, a smattering of extra chapters, and a few chapters of a sequel. It's the story of Sonia, the supposed last boss of an anime, who learns magic to be able to see into the past. She goes beyond the norm and ends up seeing her past life as an anime okaku girl that was a big fan of the anime that is apparently Sonia's current life. With the goal of avoiding her demise, Sonia strives to... more>> make sure things don't go the way of the anime. Things nonetheless progress like the anime despite her not being evil and going around killing people and she ends up arriving at the scene where Prince Rain breaks off their engagement - the start of the story proper. Influenced by her past life, she then takes Bill, the knight of the heroine's party wielding an anti-witch sword, as payment for Prince Rain's actions and then goes back home with him. Not everyone is satisfied with this though and plots abound as people work in the background for their own goals, entangling Sonia (and Bill) despite her general desire to just be left alone.

It had an interesting start (stereotypical for the genre, but interesting nonetheless) and some interesting twists early on, but then it just never stopped. The plot twists kept coming until it started feeling stale and convoluted more than interesting. When half the story is, "Oh, but what actually happened was..." over and over about the same things it starts getting rather annoying.

To give a spoiler example,
Spoiler

Sonia's mom is the witch that saved the country. But no, actually she's the witch that plotted to seize control of the country. But no, she ACTUALLY planned the war out to mitigate the losses to the country. But no, she really worked with the prince to overthrow the evil king. But no, she actually just wanted to get rid of a rival and steal her research. But no, actually... (not gonna spoil this one and beyond)

[collapse]
. It just goes on and on and on like that, right up till the end.

It doesn't help that the explanation the author relies on for half the plot points is that
Spoiler

they're not human (Sonia, Bill, Emelda, a lot of fathers, etc.)

[collapse]

That's not to say I didn't have fun with it. I did finish the main story and did read some of the side chapters from the villain's point of view. But the more I read the less I enjoyed things to the point the only reason I finished was because I was already almost done anyways. The relationship between Sonia and Bill was fun at times, especially with how Sonia loved teasing him and stuff. Watching Bill fidget was pretty funny. I also enjoyed Emelda as an antagonist in the first half as it really felt like it was leading up to something interesting, though I felt the payoff was rather disappointing and full of plot contrivance.

I can't say reading this was a waste of time as I did finish it, but I also can't say I can recommend it at all. It tries too hard to have plot twists to the point the story is just a mess at the end. I'd say the first half is worth reading, but the second half drops the ball hard. There's currently a sequel in the works, but it's only a few chapters in and I haven't looked at it.

As for the translation, it looks okay. Maybe a "C-" or somewhere thereabout. One of the better examples of machine translation, but still machine translation nonetheless. There are a decent amount of inaccuracies, a lot of things that could've been translated better (missing nuance), and a lot of clunky English. More effort could be put into making things read more smoothly (because if you can't read Japanese you should at least make sure the English is at a high level), but it's far from unreadable and generally gets things correct enough. <<less

TL;DR 5/5, would recommend to those who are tired of the clingy ML trope that the authors use when they're too lazy to write romance buildups.

This story is amazing character-wise.

All of the characters have their own motivations and are believable. The romance build-up is a rare treat in the way that the characters actually took time to get to know each other and build trust. Not like those other shoujo stories where the ML just immediately falls in love or clings to the FL because they find them interesting or... more>> something. No one is truly altruistic and everyone had ulterior motives, which is why it's so satisfying when they fell in love as equals after they got to know one another and build trust.

While I wouldn't say that mystery surrounding the story is best executed, there are enough foreshadowings and hints in the earlier chapters that make up for it. You wouldn't notice those hints until you reread them. I didn't so I consider that a win.

I also just wanted to add that PersonaJXT's understanding of the story is lacking and their review is very misleading (I believe they confused the characters). I don't blame them though if they only MTL the story. While there are many twists in the story, it did not make the overall story confusing and nothing came out of the left-field. <<less

I love that the MC, ML, FL is not a good or a bad guy. Especially the MC. She's so much human than the other MC in another novel. I can relate to a lot of her thoughts. I mean, just being kind and pretty won't cut it to survive in this cruel world. You need to be able to be realistic. Yes, I think the MC is really realistic.

3/5 - C Tier - Read It

What I liked most were the dialogues. Not only did they feel real, but they also weren’t just there for info dumps. Each conversation reveals more about a character, whether it be personality or philosophy.

Another point would be the writing. The style itself is already fairly unique, but the descriptions and pacing are also excellent. They are, however, not 'top-level' descriptions. Though it does serve well with the pacing and feel of the story itself.

Everyone seems to be scheming against one another left and... more>> right. Even allies seem like enemies just waiting to stab you and some enemies feel more like allies.

The characters and the world itself are not tied down by Sonia (the MC) and continue to move with or without her. Within the book, if it were not for her beauty and obvious skill with magic, she would seem like any other witch who just so happens to be smart and cunning.--Except, she's still at the center of most things, a spiral of mysteries and antics surrounding her.

The main plot is deep enough to soak your legs into but also shallow enough to be easily entered. It isn’t a mess nor is it as simple as ‘Get from A to B’. Yet, the author sucks at writing twists, the twists suck.

The translation quality, if I was to say, is not on the better end. Decent but not anything worth worshiping.

As a story of its kind, it deserves praise. However, as a warning, this is a review based solely on the current chapter count of 25. <<less

I have only read the first 2 chapters released but I found the it interesting. It might be a bit too soon to judge but I think this novel deserves a chance.

The MC has her engagement broken on her wedding day... she spins things to her advantage

one of the best things since sliced bread lol

no but seriously this is one of the first web novels I read on this site and it’s still one of my favourites. It’s not perfect but the two main leads genuinely bring such rich interactions that have you begging for more. I also believe that the world building isn’t to shabby.

Finished the novel and it's pretty good.

Loved how they aren't your typical good guys but people who gets the job done to live the peaceful life they want. Glad how the pairings ended up in the end and the extra stories were also good and sweet. This story made me tear up a lot and I can sympathize with some of the characters. A lot of the problems could've been solved had they just sat down and talked but as the evil witch it made sense how no one wanted... more>> to talk. Hope to see a sequel in the future because it was really interesting but the end was pretty much summed up, I just want to see more of the cute couples! <<less

I like how the progression of the plot isn't rushed. It's also not the typical reincarnation story where the protagonist gets drunk with knowing how the story unfolds but instead lives on for herself while not even being remotely similar to their past selves - she's a completely different person, similar to a stranger. I like how Sonia thinks (can somehow relate to her) and how transparently honest Will is. I have high hopes for this novel. ?

So... please upload more chapters ?

Though it is kind of easy to foretell what will eventually happen by the end of the story, it is well written and translated. The chapters so far were easy to read, hopefully the characters will develop further as the chapters go on.

I'll give it a chance since it promises many bitter-sweet moments.

This is a pretty cute and enjoyable novel to read. The MC is eccentric and is literally only here for a good time and wants to just live and the ML is innocent and cute. Its fun watching their interactions. Its not too much and easy to like. (In my opinion ;0)

This isnt actually a spoiler, but a theory that some ppl have probably thought of already but..

honestly I wouldnt be too suprised if emerald was the person looking for the rose gem. Shes got a short life span and maybe with the rejuvenation magic, she'd be able to live longer. While I understand that in the "original novel" things happened differently but emerald seemed SUPER adament about Sonia being guilty. If Sonia had just lived her "second life" as its been depicted, shouldn't emerald's vision thingies change? Idk

[collapse]

anyway im patiently waiting for more chaptersss <<less

I loved this! I'm weak for this ML! He's just too cute!

The story is pretty confusing with the 'twists' on the "tragedy of 20 years ago" but it was not annoying in my case.

I say, try reading it! I enjoyed the story very much that I finished till this chapter.

... more>> The translation is done very well! Thank you so much for your hard work.

She/he also accepts all typo notifications and help to improve the translation! Can anyone help him/her? I want to but unfortunately I don't know Japanese.

Anyway, thank you for this fun read! I'll be back after a few months so chapters get piled up!

I wish you good health, translator! Thank you for translating this! <<less

This is one of the best reincarnated stories I've read. I would say that it is quite original compare to other "broken engagement villainess story"

I like the twist that being play out. You know, the kind that there's more than what is on surface, (which is normal in fiction), but then there another truth behind it. The world building is pretty well thought and explained.

I also like the fact that author didn't use the usual "misunderstood situation" to redeem the bad relationship between characters (like most Japanese LN) ... more>>

except for one character

[collapse]
. I really not fond of the 'misunderstood device' where apparently, "my father/mother/fiancée/husband love me all along, they just don't know to show it 🙄"

This is also different from other reincarnated story, where the MC experience personality changes because their mental age or moral compass was influenced by their prev life... Here,
Spoiler

rather than remembering past life, it's more like she SAW a video of her past self, and thus understand that the world she live is an anime. So move her life in the way that would prevent the ending

All in all.... A very great read. (I MTL the rest, but it's understandable) <<less

3.5/5 for me. I think that Sonia and Will played off of each other very well--both had tragic childhoods that mirrored each other, but the way that their ab*se shaped them was very different. I liked how they had to fumble around a little bit to figure out how to help each other best and I liked how the way they understood the world was shaped by their ab*se.

The supporting cast was also pretty good; they all had their own motivations and stories.

I didn't think that the backstory was too... more>> convoluted; rather, I think that the early chapters do not hold up to the complexity of the backstories, especially the Sonia POV chapters. Her POV implies a much simpler, cleaner story than the one that we end up with which is why the later reveals feel contrived. There is some foreshadowing of a few reveals from a plot perspective, but not enough from an emotional narrative perspective. Also, the reveals come out as narrative dialogue dumps that are a little bit awkward.

This isn't a story where you can read it multiple times and get something every time; it just isn't quite constructed well enough for that. Still, I think the characters were compelling and the story was interesting. It's worth reading through once, just not worth returning to. <<less

For someone who tend to fall for 2nd male lead (yeah... 2nd male lead syndrome, when lovable character with such a great dedication exist for fans not for the heroine) this story heal me. satisfied to boot. what will happen if someone who used to giving end up on the receiving side?

I thought this will be typical villainess-who-act-like-heroine (MC), she's so calm and collected. she's not dense, truly care for ML and ML is... cute haha. read the progress between MC and ML is so fun. maybe to summarize... more>> this story in 3 words: fluffy and dark <<less

I love it so much! I love how it's not your cliche reincarnation of a villainess thing and that the FL isn't the usual goody goody and benevolent type.

That it's not the usual "Oh boohoo people think I'm bad but I did those things for the good of all, and now I must suffer scorn in secret and oh wow they eventually find out the truth and I'm loved by all now."

I love how the relationship between the FL and ML developed properly even if in the beginning it wasn't... more>> entirely out of good intentions. The characters were well written and it's not plagued with cardboard cutout characters that are meant to be simple slapsticks.

Thank you very much to the translators and I can't wait for more updates! <<less

This is basically an isekai / reincarnation story. However, it's a bit different from the usual ones. The story greatly differs from the "original plot" because it goes more in depth. There are also some plot twists in the story that makes you see how the "original plot" was merely a small part of the actual storyline. The plot twists are decent, but not that amazing. The MLs in the story are... somewhat different than your usual ML. In this case, FL dotes a lot more.

Overall, it's not bad.... more>> I personally don't like how some Japanese light novels with shoujo themes are written. There are a lot of superfluous things especially with the excess "~~" inserted. However, if you don't mind how Japanese LN are written and have previously enjoyed them, then it's fairly decent. <<less

Interesting story equipped with a formidable protagonist who is able to maintain his common sense in difficult situations and respond perfectly. Also some mysteries that add color to the critics.

I hope the reason for the witch hunt done by the previous king was revealed.
