The King's Avatar is, without contest, in my top 5 novels, not only now, but since the beginning.

There's little contest on this genre, to be fair. One of the most funny and awesome MC's at the moment, has great developments, the author knows how to properly set up goals and use adequate plot for each new arc, and the other characters are richly thought through and constantly used.

All the professional gamer alliance, teams, team members are really interesting, there's depth to every personal relationship the MC has and not only... more>> that, but the frequency of new characters being introduced is fairly high, but they're generally so cool that it's not so hard to keep track of all of them.

I just don't like the fact that their team name is HAPPY of all things (as of yet), but that's just a name after all.

All in all, I would just like to emphasize that, to me, The King's Avatar is a great great novel of its genre (and not ONLY of its genre) and you should give it a try, I really recommend it. <<less

Let me preface this review by stating it might be rather long. This novel definitely has issues. I think the largest issue is the story's pace. We get chapters after chapter of grinding, which gets really repetitive. To be fair, they are playing a MMORPG and anyone who has actually played one can tell you that grinding is a huge part of them. In fact many MMORPGs only really start when you reach max level and start participating in raids and PVP. However reading about the process gets dull quickly.

Quick... more>> overview of the game:

The game Glory is a unholy mess of MMORPG, Fighting and FPS genres. While it sounds amazing on paper, trying to create it would be an unholy mess. The game itself is played in a first person view (think Elder Scrolls or FPS) with both melee (Sword, Spear, etc.) and ranged classes (Mages & Gunners).

The characters gain experience by fighting monsters, running raids and completing quests. They level up and gain skill points they spend in Class specific skill trees. They gain equipment through crafting or grinding to improve their characters.

The fighting is similar to Street Fighter and other fighting games, with characters blocking and finding opportunities to chain attacks into combos, quick recoveries and various other fighting game specific traits.

As another reviewer noted, the author's explanation of skill is questionable. This is just something of a personal pet peeve and a lot of people will have no issue with this. The author puts heavy emphasis on Actions per minute (APM). For Example:

In one scene a relatively new player beats a pro player because she has much greater APM.

Actions per Minute (APM) is only useful in very specific games mainly RTS. High APM is needed because the players have to control their economy (base, expansion, production) and large armies at the same time. In Glory the player is controlling a single character and thus APM should have a hard limit. Characters take time to execute actions and even with animation cancelling, your character can only preform so many actions in a given amount of time.

What makes this novel amazing is its characters. The King's Avatar has a huge cast of characters and the interactions between them is always top notch. Characters have individual personalities and motivations, which makes them more relatable.

Our protagonist Ye Xiu is a pro player that has essentially been kicked off his team and wants to return to the pro scene. He might be overpowered but unlike many other protagonists its been justified well. He's not a nobody that suddenly powers up and becomes invincible. He's been a pro player since the scene started (8 seasons) and his team won the first three championship titles. In fact his age is a large factor and realistically he only has a few years left before he's too old. Most of the players from his generation have retired or are on the decline and he just wants to remain pro as long as possible.

One thing I really like is how he was kicked off the team. Everybody was acting somewhat realistically and in line with their personalities. This wasn't a best friend stabbing another in the back out of nowhere and the other swearing revenge.

Ye Xiu managed to alienate most of his team and their management. His refusal to show his face on camera limited his marketing value. Office politics happened and he was kicked from the team, after they acquired another good player. I definitely can see this scenario happening in real life.

Overall despite the pace and occasional issue with how the game works, this is a great novel and definitely worth a read. <<less

So far I've loved the novel though it does contain the annoying over reminder of the MC and MC related characters above the norm or "God Like" ability that is present in many Chinese Wuxia or Wuxia like novels. Or other segments such as "Silence was a CC effect, which stopped a character from activating skills. If a player was put into this condition, players usually said they were "silenced"." This is not needed at all and serves no purpose, we are nearing 700 Chapters yet these fillers are not... more>> edited out.

I've come across a number of inconsistencies in the novel and I have no idea who to message about this, it bugs me that they exist and that I don't know who to contact haha. <<less

Loved it! It kept me on my toes. Whether it be the anime or the web novel, I personally love it for what it was. Repetitive events, plot holes or not.. whatever! xD I'm here for the ride. I don't plan on pursuing any deeper that that, but I do love guessing the future events. In the early chapters, I saw some hints to future plot lines like the method of obtaining skills I felt that it could be a possible event etc etc~

I do have to praise my beloved... more>> cannon fodder, Blue Rain! He's too adorable! Every time he is stuck between a rock and a hard place, I can't help but wishing I could give him a hug! He is cursed... cursed by the author! hahaha You can practically smell his exhaustion with ML

and yet still help manage ML's guild when he was asked! Such a good babysitter hahaha

I really hope that he joins with Ye Xiu. I know it is practically impossible, but I still can't help but hope. <<less

Thumbs up for the comedy & character interactions :) story is developing & isn't about MC being OP (he is one of the best but he did lose some of the championships) as some fans in the story do support other club's Pro Players etc. The characters build up story is good (MC using despicable methods to return, loves the game & does have a life plan or will return to his family when he's done (will be explained later), SuMucheng's childish behavior, SteamedBun's being an airhead etc

for every single... more>> character in the story). Scenario of hardcore gamers/addicts.

The plot does grow as it goes especially after 350+ chapters onward & just like football waiting for that 1 moment of action "comedy" to happen as you read.

If there's demerit it would be majority of the combat narrations : skill names

& repetitive to readers, basically a wall of text every details of the fight & weapon stats. Only some of the combat narrated is worth while.

    • Do not tie this story with VR, scene is always story characters in front of PCs.
    • Game settings is very common for Wuxia type of Chinese MMOs. (Open world PK etc & likely adapted from it)
    • This story is a FICTION-comedy, might not be everyone's cup of tea.
PS : Chapters on the ninja 'Deception' is gold. (",) <<less

Great novel, picked up after watched first episodes of anime. Like it more than Moonlight Sculptor and likes.

Its advantage is its very straightforward story - there is clear goal, clear obstacles and a path to reach the goal the MC goes. So no pointless filler, unnecessary plot elements and aimless bloating as many novels do.

Really nice novel. Although there are some inconsistencies here are there, they can be neglected. Nice character stereotypes and their back ground stories. Nice depiction on pro gaming scene. Although I want the MC character to develop faster and see how the author will depict pro matches, considering they have like 18 volume, I think I will have to wait until volume (7) to those matches to appear.

Nicely written on gaming scene and if you compare this to VR genre novels, this is way too realistic and good in a... more>> different way. I am really looking forward to read more of this. <<less

One of it's kind in translated novel, it's a MMO instead of VRMMO and there's no superpower or supernatural happening. Only player skills and characters interaction.

The LN starts off rather refreshing; the idea is quite different than the standard VR story line. However, the story does get very repetitive.

Naturally, being a retired pro player, Ye Xiu is extremely good at the game. Using his skill he continuously sets new records for the dungeons in the new server. Although at first it's interesting, it becomes rather bland when that's basically all he does for at least half the LN.

There are definitely good aspects to the LN: it's not focused on exp grinding, skill isn't completely determined by stats, and it offers a lot of background. <<less

The best gaming novel I've ever read. Not with usual virtual reality but just keyboard and mouse.

The world building is so detail and every character been developed nicely. It's repetitive but hey, it's a game so you need to be repetitive to farm.

This is a novel that is worth 5/5.

The reason being?

Story: - A pro gamer that doesn't fit the new management of pro-gamer guilds (where they want to rake in the moolah, and he doesn't give a damn about it), surprisingly finds a new motivation in an organic way, when he plays the same game, but in a different server, and things roll from there. There are a lot of cultural tropes, especially in regards to the idea of a 'gaming studio', which captures the essence but isn't exactly 100% mirror... more>> of what happens in real life.

As for storytelling; it is a somewhat generic "in-and-out" of the virtual world experience, but a more believable setting (our MC isn't a rich bloke, and his gaming stamina, prowess is believable). He doesn't win all matches, he doesn't lose all matches, but he definitely squeezes the opportunity (not to the point of unbelievable like Ark, or other ilk) <<less

TKA, perhaps is one of the most undeserved novel of it's low ranking. It's a brilliant masterpiece of a tabletop-rpg-esports novel. Being Qidian's top novel of 2013, few could probably question it's qualities.

The main character Ye Xiu / Ye Qiu is perhaps the naturally funniest MC I have read, the interactions between the characters are pure perfection. The jokes comes as naturally as in real life, the plot advances at a slightly slow pace and does not dwelve into the characters background at all, so not too much drama guys.

There... more>> is a lack of romance in this novel, which is probably the only minus this novel has, the relationship of the characters are most;y vague until the very end.

To those who are starting to read TKA, 1 word of advice, is to be patient, it's a slow paced novel and it may seem boring at start, but trust me, it's all but worth it.
Rated 9.6. Brilliant. <<less

Review as of 100+ chapter.

Kinda rare RPG chinese novel. It's not VR or transported to game world, it's real world meaning e-sport with mouse and keyboard type of game. The plot is good and refreshing early on, the action, combat, and drama are very detailed and realistic. But after around 100 chapter I personally feel that the story is getting kinda slow paced unlike the early on.

MC is not alpha male gotta catch 'em all harem type character (But there are indeed multiple potential girls surrounding him). He's a rare... more>> very respectable MC that could naturally turn enemies to comrade. He's not gonna take revenge like a beast

[I'd recommend trying a dozen or so chapter to get the feel of it] <<less

Imagine a slingshot. In the center of the rubber band put yourself (the reader). Now let it go. At first the speed is terrific. It feels like you might travel to the end of the universe. But after a few seconds the speed drops by a lot until you just roll on the ground thinking only about how to stop faster. In the end, you look back and see you traveled quite a long distance..... for something shot out of a slingshot.

This is my experience when it comes... more>> to this novel, and my guess is that I'm not the only one feeling this way. Reading this novel with the same anticipation as the first, let's say, 50 chapters, requires from the reader two things. First, for him to be an avid gamer, and second, to actually want to implement that kind of lifestyle that the MC has upon himself. Otherwise, everything starts to sound either boring, or repetitive. Still, this novel is a masterpiece. The effort the author put in this novel is huge and I can understand it's popularity. Because of this I give it 4 stars, and encourage anyone to start reading it. <<less

The story starts very strong and feels not like the fantasy or VR storys.

It is totally realistic and the MC feels cool.

The downside for me is the extreme esport focus that leads to a lack in indepth story development. While that is kind of typical especially for Chinese web novels it sometimes feels like you would better be off by just watching some ESL stream.

Just like almost every volume driven novel there really is not much real content or story at some point anymore. You could sum up several chapters... more>> in one or two sentences.

My review is not meant to be a rant, just stating the obvious. There will be a lot guys simple enjoy reading. The writing style is good and if you are fan of the same “endless style” it's just much better than for example Zhan Long and TKA is the way to go. <<less

pretty good story. Much better than most gaming novels where the MC's tend to rely on luck. MC's a strong from the start and shakes up a whole server with his character. Feels more realist since it's not a VRMMO

Amazing story which is extremely realistic.

Truly the best gaming novel I have read in a long time. Slightly edging out even LMS. Most VRMMO novels are rather 'overdone', which is great for a fun read but this story is indeed a fresh take on the genre. Kinda like an e-sports fantasy.

This novel is great but you can't say that it didn't have any flaws. Just as the others stated, some scenes may be repetitive and slow moving, but I just love how the author not only focuses on the MC and his close aides, but also to other characters. Well, I just love Ye Xiu's shamelessness hahaha.

The story is very well-written. Big or small plots are well-thought and planned. It's quite slow pace as author explains every action every single fight. There are few funny cliche here and there. MC is op but he knows his limit. He runs away or schemes to overcome crisis. No pure luck or BS cheat as other norm novels.

Edition and Translation are superb. 5/5.

Con: It got bored from time to time as the main plot is all about gaming. MC is pretty much at Internet Cafe all day and night.... more>> (Life sucks?) Also, many actions in game which are explained in detail (too long). MC avatar runs around game map, doing quests, fighting, etc. I admit that I skipped few paragraphs during the fights. I had to read it alternately with other novels.

Overall - Very good read. Big applause to the author. <<less
