Original review left 2 years ago at chapter c538 and is still there below. I just wanted to add my updated thoughts now that I have gotten almost a 1000 more chapters into the story. I think most of my original criticisms still stick. I also think the author has gradually learned of his limitations as the story has progressed, and has gradually minimized the out of game story-lines and dialogue although at the cost of increased reliance of the MC to advance the story. It's rare for a story... more>> to still keep it's momentum so far into the story, but it works here by having a logical and gradual progression and shifts in the setting/story. The author has done a very good job at not making the fight scenes seem completely repetitive and kept them interesting. If you can accept how the author presents how the game works and relative linear storytelling (very little side stories), this is a good novel that is very different than other CN. This is a novel that bares it's entire hand from the beginning, there are no spoiled young masters, no twists that the Earth actually a simulation, or anything else. It's very grounded, and it's more like a sports novel more than anything where a wily veteran gets demoted is out to prove he still has plenty left in the tank.

For better or worse, this is probably as close to reading a novel about an esport pro as you can get. It's uniqueness lends itself to being a palate cleanser, and fights burnout that can happen in a long stories. Most importantly, although it is a long novel, the logical story and tight focus lends itself to the length and makes it seem almost with like a series of novels and should result in a satisfying ending, which most CN have struggled with.

The Good: Great fight scenes and great story premise. Unlike a lot of other novels that have the MC bumbling about and randomly getting involved in important things, there is a clear goal for the MC and instead we get to enjoy in his path towards it. It's an interesting viewpoint to see a pro run circles around the amateurs. I also appreciate the recurring characters because they add a lot of flavor to the novel, kind of like WoC (although WoC does the side characters at a higher level IMO). The Bad: I talked about how I liked the diverse supporting cast, but a problem with them is how one-dimensional they can feel. Each side character has a trait that 99% of their interactions are based around. An OP main character can also be a turn-off for some. It's hard making a main character be OP without making the rest of the world not seem dumb/incompetent (although I guess most people are compared to a top-level pro). All-in-all I consider this a pretty good novel: I appreciate how it has a high emphasis for the outside the game interactions and politics. That's not to say characters spend most of their time outside the game, but because the game isn't VR necessarily (it's a mouse and keyboard game), characters aren't going to transport themselves into the game. If you enjoy an OP MC running circles around everyone, or a very long-term revenge plot this is for you. I think it's a refreshing read compared to the typical xianxia/wuxia fare. <<less

A very clever protagonist within a typical gaming plot-- the downtrodden and betrayed genius Gamer rising to reclaim his throne. And considering the novel's title 'King's Avatar' this throne is actually somewhat literal now.

What makes this such a wonderful read are the fleshed out characters-- no skimping even to the female characters who are actually wonderfully plentiful-- and the seriously kickass, hilarious, deadpan, conniving, and somewhat mysterious protagonist. Seriously, he is a bae. Ridiculously intelligent and gifted at gaming (with a bizarre backstory that was unfolded quite randomly and I... more>> am still puzzled at), the protagonist's characterisation has a biting sense of deadpan humour and absolutely self serving motives. Almost an anti hero to be honest. He isn't on some righteous tragic crusade to avenge himself: he's climbing back from the bottom to reclaim his throne because he loves what he does and he's good at it. It's a great read, and a stand out one because the protagonist actually, god forbid, has character. The OP moments are also nothing to scoff at. The recent chapters have been lagging a bit though, so I'll have to see what happens next. <<less

4.5/5 I've read and dropped LMS, Ark, and Zhan Long. I decided that I didn't like the genre, and that I wouldn't ever read an mmorpg novel again. Luckily after reading every decent chinese and korean action novel available, I still picked this up. I can only say that so far this beats the other vrmmo novels hands down.

It's a gary stu story, but I happen to really like gary stu stories if they are done well and not too cliche. There really isn't any part that is lacking in... more>> this novel; I just give it half a star less because I'm not very into mmorpg games. But, as a competitive fps player I can still relate to a lot of the novel.

This novel has revived the genre for me. <<less

A good read, a really good read.

It's the story of the best player of Glory, a fantasy MMO PvP oriented game, who is fired from his team (or club here) and forced to retire, because he didn't want to be involved in business. The MC, with nothing else since the club kept his 10 year old account, decide to start anew in a freshly opened server to regain what he just lost.

There's no VR here, no martial skill transposed from real (or past) life, no tremendous luck, no stat/skill table... more>> full of numbers.

It's just plain old writing that actually lets you follow what's happening, skill (with a normal computer), 10 years of experience and knowledge from the MC that let him find solutions to each issue encountered. And that's what makes it so good.

The story is a little on the slow side, but I didn't mind at all, the world building is pretty nice and the characters are enjoyable. Yes, enjoyable. Every named side characters have their own personality, motivations and purpose (they aren't just here to mindlessly feed the MC). The interactions between the characters, in real life or in game, are interesting and make the novel believable.

There are funny situations as well, from time to time, and they don't feel forced which is nice.

That "OT" translation will haunt me till the end of the world, though. <<less

A really good VR novel. IMO, its even better than LMS. The MC is really calm and smart. He really resembles the old sages showing maturity. Whenever somebody challenges him. He reacts in the most optimal way. Characters have their own personality. Everybody can think and its not an MC living in a 1D world scene. Theres a bit of political interactions, love, underdogs rising and of course conning the hell out of people. All in all, the most satisfying read ive had in quite some time.

A must read if you'd like to experience the journey of the top-tiered "Glory" player Ye Xiu. After machinations of his previous pro-level team, he "retired" from the pro-gaming scene. His goal is to get back at the top -this time with his own created team.

What makes the story great is that it's not about some Virtual -reality game, where the character gets a cheat and makes an op progress. Here everyone is on a level-playing field and each can reach the top if he has what it takes. Time,... more>> mentality and other stuff affect the MC and everyone else as well.

Anyway it's about a PC -MMORPG style game, the one you play with mouse and keyboard. Handspeed, macros, eye to hand reaction speed everything that is present in modern pro-gaming. The fights are written in a way that makes you think that the author is a genius with such imagination and able to put it into words. Some have mentioned that their ability to think up that (such as game mechanics, skills, balance...) have really left them impressed and I am one of those people as well.

Only reading about this may seem boring to you, but each character has their own distinct personality and they evolve as the story goes on. Add in the fun and comic relief moments which are expressed naturally and will make you crack a big laugh everytime there is one.

But I will give it 4 stars as it's not perfect or straight up monster quality. The story has it's downs such as :

Personal story of the MC takes quite a bit of time to be revealed. At the time of writing this review it finally we readers got to know all about it. Not saying that we weren't teased with what happened, but yeah thats that.
Spoiler

I have to say I really liked the moment when the MC said that even if he plays 10 more years he won't get tired about it, because it's his passion

[collapse]

For romance lovers, at chapter 408, there isn't much going on actively. Probably will stay that way until the end with ambigious romance.
Not saying a good story must always have a romance, but this story wich focuses on RL stuff, gaming and evolving the unique side characters is certainly missing an active romance element.

I am sure it would have made the story even more famous if, because those who are not interested in game novels would be pulled in the fantastic reading experience I currently have with this novel.

One of the series I read every day - highly reccomended ! <<less

Technical Aspects: 9/10 (sometimes hard to keep up with over 50 types of moves across classes)
Writing and translations: 10/10 (I don't even notice grammar/spelling mistakes. Rare on my part, but can be due to the story being good)
Story: 8/10 (No actual plot, but the story isn't s*upid.)
Characters: 10/10 (Love the characters. Even the cold-intellect MC is nice to read.)
Setting: 7/10 (It's a game world, but everything is either raids or monsters. As an old game, quests are done mechanically and the background... more>> is barely touched.) <<less

This one is a hidden gem. It is one of the best gaming novels I have ever read and by gaming I mean pure gaming mouse and keyboard gaming not VR. The MC is likable as well as other character so if you like MMO go for it.

The story starts very strong and feels not like the fantasy or VR storys.

It is totally realistic and the MC feels cool.

The downside for me is the extreme esport focus that leads to a lack in indepth story development. While that is kind of typical especially for Chinese web novels it sometimes feels like you would better be off by just watching some ESL stream.

Just like almost every volume driven novel there really is not much real content or story at some point anymore. You could sum up several chapters... more>> in one or two sentences.

My review is not meant to be a rant, just stating the obvious. There will be a lot guys simple enjoy reading. The writing style is good and if you are fan of the same “endless style” it's just much better than for example Zhan Long and TKA is the way to go. <<less

This is one of my holy grail novels. I binged the whole series in a week, staying up until 5 am and power napping until 8 or 9 am to continue reading.

This novel is the reason I started reading gaming novels and even though it's long, I wish it was longer. Ye Xiu is my favorite child (his cheek!! The way his rivals/opponents hated and respected him LMFAO) but the way the author also developed all the other characters shows that the level of thought and depth they put into... more>> writing this story. Not a gamer, but the gaming scenes and face slapping were so satisfying for me and I didn't skip a single scene.

My only complaints are I wish it was longer and the ending, I also read the extras btw and watched the donghua, but the novel is the best (I watched.1% of the cdrama before deciding it was not for me).

Spoiler

I just wish he didn't retire and kept playing, or for a sequel with him as the coach of the world team but also playing as a sub.

Good God, I hope the author continues or makes a sequel of some sort. This is an amazing novel compared to the other translated Chinese novels I've read. 10/10 would recommend to anyone, even moreso if you have ever played an MMO before.

Some additional points:

The in-game lingo and Chinese alliterations were really well done compared to other translated novels. (Don't know if it is because the English translation is just really good, or it was just well written in is orginal form.)

MC has a team! He is still OP... more>> but has to rely on characters on his team throughout the story to succeed. They are not too many of them and it has led to them being really well developed.

Spoiler

Really sad that the playoffs were only 3 games, and the author mostly skipped over the losses. Would've appreciated seeing how the team handled the L's.

That being said the ending was super well done, would also recommend checking the side stories that were released afterwards they won.

If there are any recommendations of novels will similar quality please message me :D <<less

A story about how a gaming god fall from the top after being kicked by his former team and how he slowly but surely rises back to top.

Even though I am late in finishing this novel (nearly 9 years since the novel ended) , I am glad I found this masterpiece's anime 6 years ago.

I feel an attachment to the character that when the author wrote FIN, it makes me feels sad that I cant continue following characters anymore.

In any case, Glory never ends. Will re-read this novel somewhere in... more>> the future <<less

It’s a good novel for this type of genre. It’s more on the action on the game and some plot related background off game. The fights are intense and MC is basically already very OP but his personality is very frank and simple too. But that doesn’t mean he’s sinple minded. He’s actually a very deep thinker. I think this is kinda logical there’s many novels who’s OP MC is structured like this. Genuis but not emotionally complicated. And his background story or what’s implied does kinda explain his personality.

Spoiler

MC is from a politically influential family which is implied in the last chapter. He ran away from home to become a gamer then met the orphaned SU bro sis duo. They (Su bro and YX) played and earned money from game then ultimately creating a pro team for the very first season of Glory Pro Alliance. Su Mucheng the baby sis and also one of the lead character was still young then and was sent to school. Before getting to the first pro scene, Su bro died in car accident. Leaving MC to play in pro scene without his partner in crime. Thing is both characters are genuises in this game but even more so the dead su bro. He created many of the self-made equipment of their characters and he’s very innovative. He was also known as the Gunner God in first server as per Wei Chen’s recount. As in God of every gun wielding character in the Glory.

given those info, we can assume that MC is heavily impacted by his death. Which bolstered his drive even more. He wanted to win because he enjoyed it but also because he wanted the creations made by his closest friend to be alongside him. This is evidenced by him omitting to play the first round of the season’s 1v1 which made his winning streak 1 less than the total games played during season (which is 38 games so his streak is 37). There was chapter of him thinking that ‘i left 1 game so you can break my streak’. It’s implied that ‘you’ here is su bro. He has a strong heart tbh. Whenever I think about that kind of circumstances I just feel incredibly sad. Parting in that way is very traumatic. I wish the author didn’t make such a heart breaking back ground.

Gonna rate it 4/5.

I preferred comedy type of LN which isn't this. But it's still a good one. I've read until 390 before deciding to jump ship and read other novels.

I didn't know that there's a live adaptation in Netflix. I was surprised when I saw it a while ago. I'll check it out and see whether it's the same as what I remembered.

Just leaving a review to keep tabs on the chapter where I stop. I didn't drop it completely, but I just gotten used to reading multiple novel whenever I get bored due to reaching a boring phase on a certain novel. Or just when I suddenly got the urge to read a different genre. Will continue to read it again in the future.

Not a bad novel for sure. Maybe the best I read where the action takes place in a videogame. Unfortunately, when the action is not concentrated on the protagonist, which happens quite often, it is boring. And the more we advance in the novel, the more boring it gets. What should have been the climax, at the end was for me the worst, I almost gave up on reading it.

On the other hand, I always blame books for teasing something that will happens in the future during a long time... more>> and that in fact last little time (like the war with the white walkers in GOT). Here, I cannot reproach it.

The good news is, the anime seems to gloss over a lot of parts so it should be more digestible to watch than to read. <<less

I'm way too obsessed with this novel, it's literally my favourite, and I truly can't understand how this novel easily overlaps into every single genre. Like, , , half of this is a f*cking slapstick while the other half broils my intestines from high levels of competitive stress, I stg. This story, at least in my opinion, is very unique in terms of its genre, since for an e-sports/gaming novel, it focuses a lot on character development and goals that aren't just limited to within the game that the novel focuses and takes place in. Like, yeah, all of Ye Xiu and most of the characters' goals revolve around the game or just the aspect of gaming, but it feels like the character isn't made to just become OP through the game, or loved because of it. Like as a reader, it really felt like I became a major simp over Ye Xiu for his personality and who he is as a person.

Also, I loved how though Ye Xiu is truly a god in the game, he's still limited by realistic things, such as age, and within game, he can't easily overwhelm competitors/scenarios due to his own OP abilities. Because then, a lot of the novel focuses on really curious/interesting solutions that don't feel ex-machina, and instead, build up on the knowledge that you as a reader eventually gain while reading (such as how certain skills can be used, how the game itself is developed and how to upgrade yourself, certain moves, etc. My favourite was definitely with Ye Xiu's fight against Poplar Beach
Spoiler

when he used the distributed inventory weight of the character to pull a twist against him

[collapse]
. So it like keeps you on your toes, and builds a MAD amount of tension, because you really can't determine if Ye Xiu is going to win.

Like, , , THIS NOVEL GAME ME STRESS? It shaved off like a f*cking decade of my life while reading it because of how much stress it gave me because like, , , fr, , , there were major parts of the novel where I truly thought the cast was going to fail, even ye xiu. Especially since the author isn't scared to involve losses
Spoiler

like that part with tang rou's 1v3, , , oh my god, , that gave me a headache especially since she was one of my favourites

[collapse]
, like, , , this entire f*cking story cramped all my arteries okay.

Also, I LOVE the characters. Like???? Lmao??? They're f*cking hilarious, and, the characters are seriously individualized and well-rounded. There's no wasted words/backstory on them, and it doesn't feel tedious to get to know them, as their characters and personalities, even as the most background character, is hinted and dimensioned to feel like real people or real coworkers. All of them are super individual, especially ones that are close to Ye Xiu, and have their own goals, willpower, and beliefs that don't perfectly align to further the plot or make MC look good. Their interactions with not just the MC, but with each other, is really really fun and makes me truly love them. Like it's pretty hard for me to get attached to characters who aren't the MC, even if they have lots of screentime, usually because they don't seem to have a purpose that makes them feel not like a character of a book or an overarching plot, but as a person that has more depth. Like, the fact that the author does that not just with supporting cast, but literally with almost just about every character he inputs, is truly amazing.

Also, I love the gameplay aspect. Maybe it's because I hate myself, but I actually really love reading about players grind. Like. No matter what game, I will blankly read all that sh*t and feel empty about it for DAYS okay. But QZGS has such a fun game? Like??? The settings, the scenarios, like all of it speaks out to me. Like, , , this was probably the novel that made me so obsessed with e-sport/gaming novels in the first place. Like it's never a boring moment reading this shit, I swear.

anyways, I love this novel, and I love how reading this always feels like I'm going to get nauseas from the building tensions of the game and competition itself.

I've read TKA for 4x from beginning to end. I love reading TKA because I like how the story progressed. And it is also very relatable. I can relate with the characters. It has enough humor in it. If you'll focus on the technicalities, I'm afraid you might get disappointed simply because there are lots of inconsistent technicals that sometimes appear to be unrealistic. This novel will teach you things that you can apply in real life. Like hardwork, teamwork, leadership, friendship and the like. And I guess it was... more>> one of the objectives of the author.

I love how the author discussed some of the notable skills they used, because I got to imagine how it was done and how would it appear when used.

Ok novel with a good mix of in game and real life. Story wise, I would give it a 4, but after chapters 200 or so, when the author realized he had a hit on his hands, he started filling it with exposition and filler. Skipping everything not in "" makes it bearable. The story can easily be reduced by 30-50% without losing anything. So, 3 overall.
