Holy. Wow. Woooow. I went into this thinking it'd be a quiet and reflective read that would touch my heart and have fluffy moments (something similar to Fanservice Paradox or Exclusive Rights to a CV Star) and it did have those moments but man when this gets dark it gets DARK. I wasn't emotionally prepared for how deeply the author would tackle the many many many disadvantages of being an idol. The author does not shy away from exploring the sometimes devastating effects of mental health issues on celebrities.

Tbh, I... more>> almost stopped reading at one point because it just became too sad but I'm happy to report that I persisted and that the story has a HE.
Spoiler

Don't worry no one actually died. They just had to fake his death to give him time to recover in secrecy.

[collapse]
It just hurts me to know that the reality of idols isn't far from what is depicted in the story.

However, if you're okay with getting on this emotional roller coaster then I have to tell you that the best part of this story is, without a doubt, the characters. Oh the characters! They are so well-rounded! I love love love the main cast of boys because they love and care for one another so much and they're basically each other's second family. I love that the author didn't just focus on developing the personalities of the MC but all the members in the band because each of these boys felt real. They had their own unique quirks, likes and dislikes, and different manners of speaking so even when you didn't have dialogue tags you could tell who was speaking. They also changed as they grew and changed from teens to adults and from trainees to popular stars. Within the story they each had their time to shine without taking away from the MC's journey. The romance is a slow burn but I really liked the pairing. They balanced each other well and I love how quietly supportive the ML was of the MC.
Spoiler

I also liked the secondary pairing of the two oldest members in the group. They were super cute. I thought the way the author depicted the troubles in their relationship to be realistic too. They loved each other but they also love their members and their fans so they felt guilty about being together and potentially exposing the entire group to jealous and/or hate from the public. However, they'd get jealous when their partner had to do fanservice with fans and the other members too.

[collapse]
A small detail that I also loved is that when one of the other members found out about the two being together, he worriedly asks the MC if the ML ever made a move on him when he was a minor because they met when the MC was recruited at 15/16 by the ML who was 19. I loved that he did this because I hate how sometimes these stories will try to normalize older love interests essentially preying on minors. It would've been super bad in this case cause the ML is also kind of his boss. I'm glad that that was addressed. Overall, this isn't the lightest and fluffiest read about the entertainment industry but it definitely is the realest. <<less

⚠️TRIGGER WARNING⚠️

—depiction of self harm at MTL ch 139—

It should be mentioned that unlike most showbiz novels I’ve read that mainly focuses on vanity and sparkles in the entertainment circle, this novel is more about blood, sweat, and tears. The hard-work, struggles, and sacrifices, both physically and mentally. The fickleness of fans and netizens, easily spitting hates and discriminations. The misogynists, toxic gender norms, people undermining mental illnesses.

But sad and heavy as it may be, the characters’ love and trust for each other are very wholesome and made this... more>> novel a very worthwhile read.

I loved every bit of their outspoken adorations. Their platonic “I love you”s and care. I enjoyed every bit of it.

Think twice or thrice before you leave your words on the internet. Lets keep the harsh and disgusting words to ourselves. Know more before expressing your opinion, don’t base it on just one article. It’s the brain we always have to use, not our mouths and keyboards. <<less

Foxaholic translator here! Should have done this review sooner but, well, I'm lazy.

I don't like to read the novels I translate as I like to know what happens as I'm tling, but I've still read some chapters here and there.

More than be just focused on the BL (as the majority of BL novels), it also shows how is the entertaiment industry (with the dark side of it too) which is very interesting and I really liked that. We don't get to see just the MC (whose name is Huoren, not... more>> Huo Jian as the MTL says, why does the mtl translate a name wrong) but also his teammeats. Also, the group is called Corona (C-Cornonavirus??) which is the Spanish word for "Crown" that's why the novel is called like that.

My favorite part was when Huoren had a gay panick and being like "How can a man like another man¿¿¿???" and I was like: Oh honey, you'll experience that yourself.

Even if I don't know how it will end, it's a 10/10 for now. I recommend everyone to read it. <<less

If you're into kpop fandom, you'll love this! This gets pretty real on the good and bad of the idol industry. It does get dark at points, but I promise it's a HE for everyone eventually. I really like that they went into the group dynamics/friendship, even showmance CPs, lol. MC is Huo Jian, the captain of the team and all-around ace. He always has to be the composed one for his fellow members, and the only place he can be soft is with the ML, his mentor.

All is well. I'm happy now that they all got the ending they deserved. For the antagonists, they also got the ending they deserve.

Just warning for people who's gonna read this, the novel has mature themes. Not in terms of s*xual theme but in terms of mental health like depression, anxiety, and even suicidal tendencies. Be warned because I didn't expect this themes to appear in the novel while I got into it.

What I expected is fluff, which the novel really have, but that quickly took a turn into a... more>> much more heavier topic. So, be prepared.

Though, there's actually one pair I didn't expect to ship and sail. I haven't got the hint of their relationship until the end. I'm happy for them. <<less

One of the best entertainment circle Chinese BL novels that I've ever read. Glad it's translated! Everyone in the group is charming and distinct.
Spoiler

I also love the plot twist (or the sad part?) in the middle of the book. The trauma that one of the characters experiences is very relatable to me, and I think this part makes this book different from other entertainment circle BL novels that I read on jjwxc.

[collapse]
Although I am not a fan of any idol group, I'd say this is the most "realistic" novel about idols that I've read.

Generally, if you want to read a novel about idols and entertainment circle, I strongly recommend it. You can not only enjoy the shipping but see a warm idol group just like a family. I truly love their friendships.

This novel is a sadistic troll and I sadly liked every chapter of it.

The plot in the middle is a bit dog blooded. However the characters are lovable (except the stinky villain). And since the story followed the boys since their pre debut day, the drama felt real and engaging.

The angsty part was really angsty. But I'm glad everything ends well. It was a good read.

I really liked the first 100ch, which delves into life as a trainee and then Idol in an entertainment company in the 2011-2017 era. It addressed a lot of both the good and bad side of being an idol. As for the group, the team building is good and each member has their own backstory, personality, and quirks. It's easy to see the author is a kpop fan (she mentions BTS in her author notes) and actually knows a bit about that industry, though I don't know how close it... more>> is to the Cpop equivalent. after the first 100 or so chapters, things become messy. There were 40 chapters of angst and drama and sloppy writing, which made me first impatient and then irritated
Spoiler

the secondary couple had quite a bit of angsty drama and on top of that I was p*ssed off at the ML for his misunderstanding (which dragged on forever) and then 'idiot noble sacrifice' mindset he took for about 20+chapters after the initial misunderstanding was finally cleared up, and irritated at the MC for being so uncharacteristically timid with the ML when he was aggressive and straight forward with everything else. And all that was before FALSE came into the picture and made me start skipping chapters. I was pretty much done at that point and just wanted to finish already.

[collapse]

all in all, I think it would have been a tighter story without the messy middle 60 chapters. My rating for the first part of the story was 4.5, the middle is barely a 3, and the end was a solid 3-3.5. I feel a 4 is a little high because of the second half but its better than just an ok story so I rounded up. It's worth reading just for that first 100ch.

on a side note: I really don't understand Chinese naming conventions for Idol groups. In the last story I read, they are named after female contraception (IUD) and in this one, they are named after Mexican beer (or the covid19 virus). <<less

It's not bad but I don't think it deserves such a high rating, either.

The MC feels like a Gary Stu to me. Although he's poor in the beginning, everything after that is smooth sailing. It might be because he's hardworking but a few bumps on the road would make it more realistic.

I don't understand how the ML accomplished all those things at such a young age. It makes me confused and puts me off. It makes me feel like a 13 year old Wattpad author wrote his character. And I'm... more>> still not sure how he started liking the MC.
Spoiler

And the fact that he was the MC's teacher? They might be close in age but I don'tlike the power dynamic. Normally, this wouldn't bother me, however, the MC literally had nothing. He was homeless, penniless and I feel like he just felt a sense of dependence after the ML saved him.

I guess I stop reading this at around chapter 120 or 130 because damn we got roller coaster here.

There's no trigger warning in the first that this novel has some Mental health issue and su*cide attempt so I was so depressed when reading this, and also got triggered easily.

Spoiler

I do MTL so I don't know the correct name of the character but all I know is the one named Chi Ji or Chi Jian? He is the member of the boygroup, the description said that he looks like a girl and he doesn't like to be called like a girl, he throw all the things that pinky or girly out and he got depression because of it. So the members avoiding topics about him looks like a girls

But entertainment industry are dirty, people want to mess with the group and they use Chi Ji as the weakness, they keep hurting him such as showing the video of him in the US when dancing with high heels and told him to show it on the stage again, it makes the netizen shouting about him looks like a girl again and he is depressed again, he shut himself in his room and things.

The members try their best to keep what is online not reaching Chi Ji as to not affect his mood, but the insider in the agency give him a bag full of screenshots of netizen saying about he looks like a girl and things and he is depressed again

He thought that he is a burden for the group and he choose to end his life by jumping from the building.

I got depressed reading this part I cry for a day just why they are attacking Chi Ji while he is the one who has less fans? He actually not that bright in the group and mostly do the behind the stage preparation such as producing. I hate it so much

Excellent novel 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Second time reading this but still the top of my list among all the cn showbiz novels I’ve read that actually looks beyond the brilliance.

Author spreads awareness to mental health issues, gender discrimination, sexualisation, cyberbullying, etc.

... more>> Rather than the showbiz plot itself, I’m actually more caught by how the narrative communicates the mental states of the characters. It’s kinda very subtle yet solid right from chapter one.

(Also, props to realistic portrayal of mental illness, and the healing process. It’s a small part of the whole picture but factual. Illness comes in all forms, some illnesses can be silent and subtle but wrecking. Love alone doesn’t magically solve or heal the problem, company and biiig big patience is mostly the key. Which is easier said than done.)

But, despite the seriousness of the matter, it is still overall as heartwarming as it can be heart rending. They are very lucky to have each other and to have met people who are willing to help, to sympathise, and people who are willing to teach them. The character’s gradual bond and adorations are very pleasing. As do their individual growth and changes.

Not to mention some good music finds 👏🏻👏🏻Very fruitful harvest. Recommended to search up the song references if you’re unfamiliar with it. Btw, it’s mentioned a lot throughout the novel and Idk why they called it “Rock n’ Roll Barbie” but its “Wicked Little Town” has a lot of cues and the musical itself seems interesting so if you wanna search it up, look for “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”. <<less

A SUPER GREAT STORY. I even feel the whole journey [its a 10 year journey] from the first day till the last moment. I didn't want it to end. I sincerely wish the song sang by those idols is made into real CD. I will absolutely buy them.

I spent some of the time getting red eyes till my mother asked me what wrong. It doesn't end even after I turn the last page. I keep seeing all the guys. I wanna be a part of them, I wanna follow to... more>> journey to support them and love them. This is the first time I'm obsessives about the characters.

This totally give a insight into the world of IDOLs. Its never easy and not everybody can wear the crown. Its covers all the light in life and also show where there is light, there is also darkness. Be a supporter, if don't.. Never be the person who look down on other just because they are more special/different than you. <<less
