The Husky and His White Cat Shizun

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

Mo Ran thought becoming Chu Wanning’s disciple was a mistake.

His shizun was really too much like a cat while he himself was a dumb pup who’d only slobber and wag his tail.

Dogs and cats were different by nature; originally, the dumb pup didn’t want to reach his furry paws out to that cat.

At first he thought, dogs should be with dogs, like his shixiong, beautiful and tame like a cute Japanese Spitz, and the two of them together would surely be a match made in heaven.

Yet, after having died and reborn, after having lived two lives, the one he hauled back each time to his den in the end was always the one he couldn’t stand at first: that snow-white kitty shizun.

This is an amazing book, with a good plot and many mature themes and topics.

I heard very much about this book and was having some expectations. In the end, it was not at all that I’ve expected, but still very very nice in its own way. You can see how I love this book just from the reading time - it took me only a week to finish everything including all extras. This is really very quick for such an amount.

I’m very very happy with the plot. I really liked... more>> how it went and plot twists. It was very enjoyable. Yes, I’ve guessed some points but that’s not an issue. I’m quite proud that I’ve guessed the main boss as soon as the 1st book ended.
Plot is complicated, and I feel like there is some points that might’ve been more clear, but that’s fine. Not a big issue.

I like the main couple, though this is not my favorite coupe. I hated the MC for half of the book, but then it began to get better and better. Especially in the end, it reminded me of SVSSS ML. But that’s not bad.
I love Shizun and he is my dear baby though the whole book.
Their relationship are complicated. In the end, I’m glad they found their place in world with the happy ever after. Those guys really deserved it.
The chemistry is soooooooo good all the way. And it was very hot in many moments. Like it.

About angst and warnings. Maybe it was only me, but I’ve expected to cry out a river and... it didn’t happen. It had got some tears from my only at the ending of main story.
But, yes, there are many mature and dark themes. Many things that are showing you how ugly this world and those people are.
I had a full specter or emotions while reading this novel. Pain, anger, hate, sympathy etc. it’s enjoyable and a bit tiring emotionally. Be aware.

I like how it all ended, and happy for the main couple. Recommend you to give it a go, after getting to know warning and triggers. <<less

Accidentally gave this a four star rating. It has a 3/5 rating from me personally.

I read this in October last year, so to this is a really late long review of it. Possibly my longest review ever.

Totally can understand why a lot of people don't like this novel. I had a hard time trying to enjoy the first 100 chapters of it. But I pushed myself because I was really curious and wanted to know how and why this novel got so many readers and hype. And yes it has... more>> its own ups and downs. Keep in mind that it has many sensitive (possibly very triggering) contents. Checking content/trigger warnings is a must.

What I like:

I usually avoid main characters like Mo Ran because I used to be the type of reader who disliked redemption arcs because I thought they were such a hassle. Like "you either apologize and die or just simply continue being villainous for the rest of your life". It's hard to find a good one. They're either really rushed or forced. But Mo Ran pretty much gave me a different point of view.

Our thoughts when it comes to redemption arcs are always related to "repaying your evil deeds and karma" which is not completely wrong. But it's also about realizing, accepting, and forgiving yourself first and foremost before anything else—no matter how filthy, evil, and unmoral you used to be. Those actions are redemption arc and character development themselves too.

The romance on the other hand was so touching and angsty indeed. I believe this is the main attraction and the reason why a lot of people read this in the first place. The classic "master-disciple" dynamic. It played a big role in Mo Weiyu's growth as a character as well.

Spoiler

Especially during those moments in which he realized that Chu Wanning had always been the person the person his heart treasured the most.

[collapse]

This couple was indeed an interesting pair for me to read about. Both had their own insecurities. Both of them also felt some feelings like "i don't deserve this" etc. I love how throughout the story progress, they helped each other facing all the conflicts they went through.

What I don't like:

Some of the plot twists were a bit unnatural—like they just came out of nowhere for the sake of a happy ending for the novel. Unnatural plot twist is one of my reading icks, so it indeed has effected my rating for this novel. <<less

First part: makes you very sad. Huge number of misunderstandings of first life.

second part: make you sad, happy, and world expansion. Got together. Guilt. Origins and history revealed.

third part: still makes you sad just not as much as the 1st part. True villain. Bunch of drama. Happy ending.

... more>> loved bc it has a way to hit you with sadness. Glad they got together. Not entirely sure if MC repented enough but at least they have healthy relationship at the end and shizen happy.

miss the mini theatre. Mlted from chapter 165 - end.

End: not entirely sure who to hate but good book. <<less

Okay fu*k here we go. First 11 chapter are struggle for me to read, no, more like book 1 are struggle to read. Basically, you don't like MC (mo ran) at first, he's look like an idiot, sadist, obsessive fool.

And the main relationship obviously unhealty at first, And Male lead (Chu wanning are looks cold and unfeeling at first, but he's such a good person and a softie..... basically repressed tsundere cat.).... but then you felt pity to ML aaaaaaa and then you think MC undeserved for ML he's too... more>> good for Mo ran (but of course, Chu wanning is not perfect but he's good and that what it's count). If the author didn't warn me the real ship, I might jump into the wrong ship. (Still made me read it tho- like, I'm very curious) But if you endure and read book 2.... it'll be worth it really. And book 3... man, such a ride.

Basically, there's 3 upgraded version of MC (Mo ran) every upgrade, he became more okay.. so. Mo Ran 0.5: is an sadist, psycho, DO NOT APPROACH ANY COST. (... after reading the books I have mixed feeling about this ver he's just-) Mo Ran ver 1.0: is an idiot f*cking idiot that I wanted smack his head with pan. Mo ran 2.0 : Finally we got the best upgrade ever. It's about change about atonement it's a process, the process is not instant.... very cool. And about the book.

Book 1: You need a mountain of patience. I'm serious. Watch me rolls my eyes at Mo ran inner monologue in background. Book 2: ROMANCE... and groveling that we need after reading book1..... and s*xual tension brrrr Book 3: f*ckING Roller coaster, a lot happened plot become really interesting. Many mystery revealed here. Basically, endure at book 1, and you know that meatbun is really really good at plot twist, the relationship become from unhealty to healthy, and this is a good books...... and also full of knive (much hardcore than MDZS) and explicit scene (and r*pe, which...I kind of skipped hahaha) but it's worth it.

Also, me at first: eh, this pair is not that impressive. I don't think they're THAT Compatible Me, after reading this books: holy shit, I was wrong. This pair is REALLY complicated at first... but then you know, their love is... sniff very touching. Ranwan is my fave now. THEY'RE PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER!!!! I'm serious, their emotional connections are deep, it's hard for me now to find another like this QAQ Also, people are horrible, this Is why I prefer to stay at home.

ok so, my personal favorite will be Xue Meng, The best chara development goes to Mo Ran, the most chara with morals/ justice/hero are Chu wanning (his mental strength is also pretty tough, but his self-esteem... QAQ), the most mysterious character goes to shi mei! (To me) also, there Is no real villain here, every (main chara) has reason and tragic past so... you'll maybe dislike some chara or even didn't agree on their action but I never truly HATE some chara here... warning: dark content, r*pe (non con or dub con whatever it is) it'll made you cry, ps: if you want more theres awesome fic that was continuation after sh*t happens, there's an AWESOME one in Ao3 (warning: it's rate E, so if you're not into that... eh.) <<less

Great story loved reading it. Real tear jerker, If you know you know. Can't wait for the show to be released, if ever in this life time.

But I'm confused some of the comments are saying that they were disappointed with the end but the translation isn't complete yet.

This story has ANGST!! There were many times I was frustrated and then happy and then frustrated again. There were many twists I wasn’t expecting but they were good twists in a sense that they kept the story engaging and didn’t fall flat.
With the MC there were many times I wanted to slap the sh*t out of him and then there was the ML I wanted to cuddle and protect.
I honestly have a love no not even love just a like/hate relationship even when I finished the story it’s still like this. I understand second chances but I just can’t forget I really can’t. But with the ML I love him to death!! He is just so 🥺🥺🥺. Like that’s literally it that emoji. It’s like he knows when to be strong with people and strong with the MC but he like also weakens himself to the MC which is frustrating but once I continue to read I also understand him.

There is a lot going on in this story that keeps you engaged so highly recommend it. Enjoy the frustration and angst but also eventual fluff too lovelies!!!

This is pain. Complete and utter pain. Just when you think things aren't gonna get any worse, it does.

But it's so beautiful, the original author has a way with words that just have the capability to take your heart out crushing into a bloody mess, you want them to stop but at the same time, you don't. Because everything about this book is so tragically well-written, and the translators did such a WONDERFUL AND AMAZING JOB.

The translators deserve everything for the amazing work that they've done, a lot of previous... more>> light novels I've read just had that awkward way of being translated, that once you've read it you'd immediately think that it was translated, it lost all sorts of flow, mechanical and forced, almost.

But this one was different, the translators managed to capture the emotions and flow of words just right, so when the very emotional scenes came, you couldn't help but cry with the characters. Thank you so much translators for the quality work you guys always give. <<less

wow, this novel has honestly been such a ride. first off, to anyone who wants to read this novel please give it a try ugh the feels. I was a lil skeptical and honestly hated the MC sm but everything changed by the third book and now im a full time simp for him. Also, I love shizun so so so much!! The only reason I continued reading was for him. Things were unbearably slow till the 97th chapter but after that its just painful, also the side characters are... more>> so so wonderfully potrayed and you can understand the motives for each of their actions. Also, to add one I love the fact that the MC is not your regular neighbourhood vigalante, he has done some messed up sh*t and understandably so as well, although I cant say that all he did was justified, but hes a grey character in true sense...

Also, I love the element of redemption in the story. Although, its a lil graphic here and there I understand a lot of people myself included would be uncomfortable w that but the rest of it is gorg.

Overall, if you like all this, you should definetly give it a shot, things are unbearably slow but I promise itll escalated very and I mean VERY quickly.

happy reading!! <<less

Personally, I really liked reading this novel and I highly recommend it. Here are a list of reasons of mine.

1. The plot line isn’t boring, there are a lot of interesting events that can keep you waiting for more. It focuses on emotions, the trauma from the past, the twists and changes of fate due to the protagonist’s rebirth, etc, and it doesn’t only talk about the romance between the bl couple. I won’t spoil anything, but I promise this isn’t your regular cultivation setting bl novel.

2. The emotional scenes... more>> are absolutely amazing. It captures the painful feeling of the protagonist slowly realizing his love after many years (technically in the novel he used 2 lives) towards his shizun who is now directly in front of him, so close yet so distant, as he promised himself to cherish and love that person and not tainting him, but with passionate dirty thoughts running through his mind. For the shizun, Chu Wanning, it’s actually even sadder in my opinion. In both of the protagonist’s lives, he had secretly liked Mo Ran (aka the protagonist), but because he was the shizun and the protagonist was his disciple, he had to hide his true feelings through a cold and haughty mask, forcing himself to endure years of pain and loneliness even before knowing Mo Ran (he has always been alone, and because of this he slowly developed a cold and harsh demeanor, but inside he’s a kind and warmhearted person and often helps others without letting them know), and because of his attitude, in the protagonist’s first life he misunderstood that his shizun always hated him, even though he was actually the one who cares about him the most. Thankfully, in his second life he realized that his shizun was very caring, and finally after more than 100 chapters he realized he has loved Chu Wanning all along. HOWEVER, in these more than 100 chapters, Chu Wanning didn’t know Mo Ran finally realized he loved him, in fact, Chu Wanning thought that Mo ran liked someone else (Shi Mingjing aka Shi Mei), and no matter what small act of kidness Mo Ran did for him (even obliviously and not realizing how painful it is for his shizun) he put on a harsh attitude, but in truth he’s very touched and always thinks about how these small interactions are enough for him.

3. The characters’ personalities are very interesting. For example, take a look at the protagonist Mo Ran. In most stories, the main character is usually the good guy who fights for justice, however in this novel Mo Ran was actually the bad guy in his past life and he sinned deeply and killed a lot of people. This is really rare, and also it’s interesting to see in Mo Ran’s second life, he often blames himself for his past mistakes and can’t forgive himself, but he did a lot of good deeds and wanted to turn over leaf in the second life, but even after all the good things he done, he still can’t get over the trauma from his last life (I’m currently at chapter 150).

Overall, I feel like this novel is definitely worth reading. If you’re looking for a bl novel that has characters with depth and angsty moments enough to make you cry, this is a great book for you. <<less

This story portrays beautiful n bitter sweet love story between mo ran n wanning at first I hated mo ran so much but in the middle I cried because of how much he suffered I think his suffering is... more>> more than wanning they both deserve happiness n love and I love all those side characters except shi mei ofc atlast I love those extras it is funny overall rollercoaster ride❤️❤️❤️❤️ <<less

5.0/5.0 Stars

(I just want to preface this short review by saying the trigger warnings included at the beginning of every chapter are 100% accurate and I'm so glad they are included. Please look at the triggers listed at the beginning of the translation and see if you're uncomfortable with anything. This novel doesn't shy away from a lot of heavy topics.)

I'm currently not finished with this novel. I read ahead with the MTL, but the current translation is worth waiting for.

Now, would I recommend this novel? As of... more>> where I am in the novel, absolutely. I don't readily give out five stars, but with the current impression this novel has left on me it warrants that rating. Mo Ran and Chu Wanning are both fantastic characters and you'll end up loving both of them. There are also some really great side-characters with our precocious bird Xue Meng and White Lotus Shi Mei.

But even with the five stars, there are still a few flaws that I've noticed. One of my current gripes is the pacing issues. Some parts of the novel have dragged far too long for my liking. I'm also not too engaged with the current direction of the plot. Again, I'm not finished with the novel to conclusively express any true grievances with plot. More than likely, the plot will expand or throw something unexpected so heed this part of my review with that in mind.

If you are willing to give this novel a try--then you should prepare yourself a blanket and a box of tissues. And maybe a stuffed animal to cuddle for added measure. This novel is a painful ride but it's absolutely worth going through.

(I also want to mention here that Chu Wanning is the bestest boi. I love him so much. Prepare to love this man with your entire soul.) <<less

I have never cried so hard reading a book. I've read over 30 BL thus far (started mid 2020) and this is by a long shot, my #1 favorite.

At first, I was really turned off by the title and the thumbnail on NU (someone should really change it).

Unfortunately I do not have much to say that hasn't already been said, I just want to add another 5 star rating on here in hopes that more people can read this masterpiece.

Be prepared to feel actual, searing pain in your heart. And... more>> then have meatbun nurture you for a few chapters. Sprinkle in some pain and angst. And then stab you viciously and repeatedly until you can't breathe. <<less

Among the three Xianxia BL novels I've read by now this is by far my favourite.

The reason is the emotional, poetic writing style, but also the focus on a few main characters, which makes it easier to concetrate on their individual feelings.

I love Mo Ran, his duality, his villain and sweet boy side. Love to read about his psychologically complex thoughts and confusion, the conflict between good and bad...

As for Shizun he's also a quite dual character, being harsh and brutal to save his fragile heart, so tragically lonely, being... more>> misunderstood by everyone...

The most interesting question for me at the current state of reading is of course: Will Mo Ran become a pure and good soul, a total contrast to his former life? How will he accept his feelings for Shizun and how will their relationship turn out?

I would find it very interesting to see an extremely soft couple in contrast to the former life happenings... Please dont spoiler me :)

To sum it up: I TOTALLY LOVE THIS NOVEL <<less

Damn, just chapter 25 and I already cried 2 times.. And laugh so many times. Someone write review that this is not suitable for fragile heart. I don’t like angst stories, but ppl said that sweet will taste sweeter after the bitter. And the author writing style is just so damn good.

Will try to endure the pain I felt for my baby chu wanning and continue to read. Mommy will protect you, my baby!

*Spoilers*

Spoiler

I have a love-hate relationship. Same goes with unrequited love. And what gives? This have both! And the unrequited love part for me is not that very heavy. So don't get discourage! Must have been because Shizun is a strong and independent person. He never felt aggrieved or tried to get in between (well must have been because he has high sense of pride and self awareness that he is their shizun and he didn't have intentions of mixing business and pleasure aka no intention of acting up his feelings) In the first book rather than Shizun drinking vinegar it's MR who constantly drinks it (yeah quite bold for someone who declared to love someone else and hated shizun to the bones). I really, really love Shizun, someone described him as aloe vera. For me he is like a chocolate chip cookie. Hard on the outside but soft and gooey on the inside, so sweet and filled with gooey semi sweet chocolate chunks. He went from Shizun who practiced restraint in every aspect. Who feels like it's okay not to be okay, afraid to complain, bother someone to care for him just because he's already used not getting care and just being lonely (this really broke my heart that he felt like he is passed the age to be spoiled. (C'mere shizun let this reader spoil you to the bones) to someone who can have desires and wants.

While on the other hand...

Mo Ran has a very simple outlook on things. But he has the most awe-inspiring character development. If he hates, he hate as far as the word hate can be and same goes with love. When he went bad he went to the extreme of being bad in the cultivation world. And when he was reborn and decided to be good. Uwuu he did his best to be good and repay what he had done in his past life. B (He learned to restrained himself, well most especially when it comes to shizun) no matter what the world say to the current him. He will always remember the previous him. The him who killed, robbed, r*ped, refused to forgive, him who lost his purpose and shed his humanity. It haunts him and questions him every moment he is vulnerable. He felt like he can't do what Chu Wanning asked him when he breathed his last, that is to forgive himself.

Hands down to the writer. I love it when he/she pointed out that Mo Ran will not fall out of fancy of Shi Mie just because shizun died and automatically declares to fall in love with shizun. Because SM didn't kill shizun. For me this novel have that element of the characters actually falling in love. I think that's also the reason why I didn't feel dislike whenever MR tries to dote on SM. (Maybe because unknowingly MR dotes on Shizun the most from his food to everything! And it's really funny when he realized that his love for shizun is the romantic type and his love for SM is not. He can't understand and forgive himself that he lusts after his shizun not knowing that list is the primary indicator of romantic love. Love has so many forms. Once desire and list goes hand in hand with the feelings of love, it is romantic love. Love for parents is agape. Love without desire and list is platonic this what I wanted to lecture MR on when he was torturing his brain cells what he likes hahaha)

PS I like the mini theaters too😊

Thank to the translators! Will wait for further updates. Fighting and keep safe!
