This is a review from the translator. I've read the whole novel, I thought it was worth reading as a refreshing bedtime story (as mentioned by a few Chinese reviewers). I happen to really enjoy reading parody type novels, as well as shameless and evil or antihero protagonist types, which we rarely get to read about in danmei.

Pros:

    • The MC -- a silly, pe*verted, shameless, and immoral protagonist. He's what I consider a more realistic depiction of what I think a demon should act like.
    • The MC's light brain V52B -- initially an innocent AI programmed with normal "3 views" but eventually gets corrupted by the MC.
    • The ML -- isn't fooled by any of the scheming people around him, with a logical mindset. Although he's a kind of playboy type character at first, it's fun to watch him get pestered and tormented by the MC and even more fun to see the MC punished (in not so fun ways).
    • Plot oriented rather than romance oriented danmei novel
Cons:

    • The ending was a bit abrupt (although it was still funny)
    • Author demonstrated some transphobic bias briefly near the novel's end (see trigger warnings below).
This is the type of story that doesn't take itself seriously, with lots of silly moments. Though it's not explicitly stated by the author, from what I can tell it's a parody. The author lightly pokes fun at the entire interstellar sci-fi genre as a whole (mainly the domineering marshal/general ML x counterattacking MC common pairing type), as well as various dog blood BG romance cliches, and even the popular shounen tower/dungeon/leveling trope. It's a cute and quirky (wacky) short story, suitable for reading when you want something simple and refreshing.

The plot is about a demon (the devil, a unique existence) in the modern era who transmigrates into a BG melodramatic romance novel set in the futuristic interstellar era; his parents are the original novel's protagonists. He has a bad relationship with his mother from the get go because she saw him as the source of change in the novel plot that was originally supposed to lead to her happily ever after. Because of that, she was determined to kill him ever since he was a newborn. In the process of growing stronger and hugging his father's thigh in order to protect himself from his homicidal mother, he cut off the romance between his parents. But this isn't a dramatic novel filled with angst and unrequited love like many other father x son or pseudo father x son stories. Instead the focus is on the ridiculous antics of a silly demon with a chuunibyou mindset, the playful pranks he likes to pull, and the many headaches he causes for the adult humans and AI guardians (optical/light brains and various robots) around him. As for the romance part, it's as if the author was thinking, "how can I make the pe*verted MC torment his dad in a more shameless manner in this chapter?"

It's also an example of "transmigrating into a BG romance world and bending the straight male lead/hero and/or side characters" (which is a common Asian BL trope found in many web novels as well as some manhua, webtoons and manga). I guess it's a subtopic in the larger "bending straight guys" type of BL novel. As for my favorite part of the story, it's the hilarious and adorable V52B!

Trigger warnings:

Here's an explanation of some of the tags, such as in*est, shota, and adultery.

Spoiler

The shou (MC) is an adult demon whose soul transmigrates into a human newborn infant, and he doesn't have the same moral concepts as humans. He tries to seduce his dad (ML) at a young age mainly due to his mischievous demonic temperament (he's a huge troublemaker by nature). Western readers would consider this an in*est and shota (underage lover) story but Chinese readers not so much. I think it's because the MC's soul was not originally the ML's son, and he was an adult when he was still a pure demon in his previous life. The vaguely NSFW scenes start when the MC (his human body) is 16. However, certain words are censored by the author with ** and the actual smut is all implied and not explicit.

The ML cheated on his wife with their son (the MC). But this isn't really a melodramatic type of plot, because the ML is a duke living in a society where it is common for the male nobility to practice polygamy. At the start of the novel, the ML had a main wife and several concubines, so it wasn't strange that he took a male lover on top of all those concubines. Moreover, for various reasons, the ML never took his relationships with his main wife or concubines seriously, as indicated in the author's summary (it's not a love triangle or polyamory type of book).

In the young nobles battle competition arc, a side character shows disgust towards a trans woman. If the MC was transphobic, I would have dropped the novel, but since it was a side character, I chose to continue reading. There's no tag for transphobia on this site, and it didn't affect a significant portion of the story (happened in 3 out of 54 chapters), but I think some people like myself will be put off by that guy's attitude. Although I still see quite a few Harry Potter fanfics being posted on this site all the time...

[collapse]

I would consider this a type of novel Western publishers and authors would label as "taboo romance" for a variety of reasons. But I believe the main reason that the publisher locked it is because the protagonist's lack of morals would set a bad example for readers. However, the whole reason this story is fun to read is because the protagonist is evil~

The story is funny and entertaining. The protagonist is not really a villain. It was the others who tried to cause trouble with him first.

They messed with the quiet ones. They got what they deserved.

The ending was rushed. There could have been some extra stuff to show the futures of the protagonists, the secondary characters and some of the cannon fodder after the book's story ended.
