The translation is very confusing at times and often uses words that have completely different meanings from what is intended. For example, not a single worm has appeared twenty chapters into the series. Instead, there have only been things like lizards, snakes, and centipedes, which are definitely not considered "worms" in English. One reader commented that the translation is supposed to be something like Gu, which is prominent in Asian horror novels involving evil magic creepy-crawlies and would make more sense than "worm." Another confusing detail is when a broken... more>> limb gets mixed up with an flesh wound or an amputation. A broken arm is much less of a problem than an amputated one, and these are two very different meanings in English. That said, it is possible to figure out what the translation was probably supposed to say.

When I first chose to read this novel, I expected to see an MC who died with worms crawling over his body before he revives as an undead lich or something. Thus far, there are no worms, and the MC is very much alive. I assume the "worm" part of the title is a translation error, but I don't know if the "lich" part of the title means that the MC will die and come back as a lich later on or if this is also a translation error.

The story development is confusing, which doesn't help the odd translations. It picks up after the first ten or so chapters. The logic is skewed all over the place as far as characters and development go, but part of that could be a cultural thing.

The culture is very interesting to read about and is the only reason I am still reading this series. I'm not sure how long it will keep my attention, but that is the only reason I have chosen to read so many chapters.

The MC isn't likeable so far and hasn't shown much depth. He has shown some development, so hopefully that will continue to be interesting. A cop has played a prominent role so far, but he is basing his judgement of guilt or innocence purely on his gut instinct and not evidence. There are cases I've read about where an officer has forged evidence because he "knew" the suspects were guilty, but they were proven innocent later. Naturally, the officer in question went to prison. The cop in this story is like that, and he's incredibly annoying and sullying the name of investigation. Then again, this is China, so I'm not sure if they prefer following feeling over reason as part of their legal system, unlike the one in my country. Otherwise, none of the side characters have been particularly likeable or worthy of attention.

Although the cultural details are interesting, there isn't much information about the world background itself. The storytelling is messy at best, and there's no clear summary regarding "wizards, " who are more like evil sorcerers or witches in this setting. I'm not sure if any clarification will be added later. So far, there has only been a detail dropped in once every several chapters, so the system of magic or voodoo or using familiars or whatever exactly is supposed to be going on here doesn't leave any basis for the reader to understand it. <<less

It's a modern-day cultivation story where the protagonist uses Gu magic. The translator uses the word 'worm' for Wug (pests or vermin). It isn't really accurate, but whatever.

The story is a resounding 'meh' at best. The main character hasn't shown any outstanding qualities other than not being an evil mu*derer. It seems like the author is planning on writing about a large number of non-Chinese characters, but luckily they don't seem to be racist like many Chinese authors. Unfortunately, the characters are kind of bland. The author does seem to... more>> enjoy talking about politics and specific aspects of culture, but the awkwardness that comes from the translation and a large number of Chinese terms and place names makes it difficult to understand.

Aside from the unique power set, nothing really stands out about the story. It's hard to understand and talks about stuff that it does a bad job in trying to make you interested in. <<less

The story was really good. But then the MC went FULL harem mode. I don't know why the author did this. He even made the MC feel bad for cheating on his girlfriend. But then he continued to cheat on her with other girls.
For some reason the 'american' girls became okay with it. Well, I am dropping this at this point. Read till chapter 450 I think. This review is for anyone who thinks this is not a harem. It is. It is a harem.

First off let me cover the good side of this story, the premise is sound, now onto the bad.

to start off with my major problem with this work is the mc's character development is pretty much nonexistent with that being the case with all supporting characters as well meaning that the book feels like all interactions between them are hollow and get repetitive very fast.

and let me tell you there is a lot of said interactions.

when there is any potential for meaningful relationship development it ends up just being turned... more>> into a means of cementing/reinforcing relationship status rather than building on the relationship.

this also stagnates potential character development.

my second major complaint is that any challenge the protagonist may face he overcomes with no real strain making me feel like said challenge was meaningless.

my last major complaint is that there is no f#cking world building, anything and everything about the world is introduced to the reader when it's convenient making it feel like your walking blind.

final there here are some small problems that annoy me but don't affect my final score.

the translator dose a sh*t job translating terms and words into the appropriate English equivalent which isn't really a problem for me but does mean that the work feels weird.

the author messes up a lot of cultural references like in chapter 126 saying that the "tin man" and "the evil queen" are from "Alice in the wonderland" when first off there was no tin man in Alice in Wonderland that was from The Wizard of Oz and the name of "the evil queen" is the queen of hearts. <<less

Be prepared because the beginning chapters are very slow, to the point that it doesn't really catch your attention and you might be thinking of dropping it.

MC is part of the Miaowei Tribe and his family cultivates the gu poison the make animals/insects of all types under their control. The translator keeps calling it witchcraft and wizards when the closest accurate occupation would be a Shaman. There's really nothing that interesting about the novel except it's in the modern day setting and there seems to be righteous cultivator sects and... more>> those that use gu poison belong to the unorthodox or evil sects.

One of the main reason I've rated this novel so low is because of the translation group. They are notorious for butchering translations with bad grammar and mistakes. This time, their sentence structures are all screwed up because they translate word for word with no proper editing. Therefore, you will see other reviews saying the sentences don't make sense and are conflicting where you don't understand what's the paragraph talking about. They also keep messing up something as simple as calling a SUV a RV. Another reason is that the author uses real world names for things but then doesn't accurately describe it. For example, the Magna Carta is part of the U.S., there's a BMW TT car (instead of Audi), flying from New York to Hawaii only takes a few hours, after a car accident in the morning the car insurance company can get it fixed that afternoon, girls can get married at age 14 in New York etc. You might think the author is depicting a parallel earth but some other wikipedia dump he does is accurate. I can only come to a conclusion that the author has half-assed his research so it's quite difficult to stomach some things he says.

I will keep plodding along and hoping the story will start becoming interesting. Read at your own risk! And here's a small example of what you'll be encountering:

However, strangely, when the girls, whom they just met, greeted him, they had a vague smile on, appearing to be very strange. <<less

Sorry bad grammar.

A good story that very different than typical Modern Cultivation CN. There's no ym-father-granpa-ancestor idiot, no over-nationalism MC that despise other country, no face-smacking boring idiot, a bit business management. MC not some naive idiot boy (at begining yeah, but not too much, then he began grow up later on)

Highly recomended if u okay with a problem below....

... more>> This is why I rate it 2☆

-1☆. Confusing translation at the begining.

I dont know if this will be a harem novel or no, bc if no, then yeah minus another ☆

-1☆.
Spoiler

MC has s*x with his 'servant' without his gf knowing that (cheating)

I have read a lot of books from this site and this one is one of the more originale ones. I think the rating ist underrated an I would give it at chapter 380 a Solid 4.2 for Novelupdates stars. I dont know but I have observed that the rating at this site ist sometimes skewed and I have a fealing the people who rate heare are not so faire to the work. I have extra createt the account to give this book a rating it deserves. The first 50... more>> -60 chapters are horrible translated ore the story is not so revined but later the translation gets much better and the story gets really fun to read. I would say you should only start so read the story if you power 70 or 80 chapters in one go to get to the good part. The story tells from an jung man in a littel village in China who goes to the USA with an Chinese mythological touch. It is really interessant to sea the view of an chinese person in the west or the US. The story is manly up to chapter 380 a bit Fantasy, Multiverse, Business Management and a little bit of love Story. I get a similar fealing as I have a manison in the Post-Apocalyptic World. I am rally fond of that kind of flaire that I get from the book. The work fun balance in the book is also great. The character is Not all the time fighting but also not slacking. I give this book a S7BASTIAN Score from 8/10.

I hope I could save you some time ore have give you a lot of fun with my recomendation of this book.

Sorry for my englisch I am not a nativ spaker. <<less

i don't know why it seems no one like this ?, probably had something to do with translator? Worm and gu that get fixed in later chapter which if you're atleast use abit of your brain you use your own understanding, but I personally really like this story, you can actually see how character growth and the world around him change with it, a mix of cultivation and modern day strength from poor to rich with a sprinkle amount of romance (non platonic) ? And complex relationship and a bit... more>> of drama, it's all in a bowl of heartwarming soup the main character made (you'll get the reference)

not convincing enough for you to read?

, so there's really no young master want you dead, because you accidentally look at him and his whole family trope get repeated throughout the novel, maybe a bit at the start. And once you get past the awkward beginning, you can't stop reading. <<less
