The Goal Is To Survive

Faritina, who was born into one of the richest families in the kingdom, looks back on a nightmare.

I remember: wasn’t my little brother born two years ago? I had forgotten, but when I went to visit him, he was so cute, and I wanted to protect this sickly little boy.

If the nightmare was a premonition, would she herself and the other siblings be caught up in the Dukes’ downfall and die?

At least if we survive, we will be able to laugh one day.

I will protect you. Your smile is our hope.

This novel is really great until around c50, but IMO kinda falls apart as it approaches its conclusion in c88. It has a really dark atmosphere and the novel gradually builds up a sense of dread as the MC desperately tries to oppose her fate, and the character development as the MC gets closer to her family is amazing. It's not a light read by any means, but it's a very thorough and dense novel that's very well fleshed out in terms of plot, romance, and characterization. I highly recommend... more>> the novel "Falling in Love with the Villainess" (FLV), for anyone who's read this novel and wants a suspenseful romance in a similar vein (it's actually so similar in tone I'd almost think that this author was directly motivated by FLV) - that said, FLV IMO continues goes strong after the imprisonment arc (~c20 for FLV, ~c45 for this novel), and FLV has a pretty decent conclusion.

That said, after around c50, the novel started to lose its charm for me.

Spoiler

The MC, who originally was very active throughout the novel, gets locked up in prison for ~35 chapters, and we lose her dynamic personality and interesting perspective on life as she becomes a caged bird. The novel instead focuses on the MC's brother, which was interesting at first, but soon the brother starts loving the MC as a woman instead of as a sister, the MC's fiance starts pining for the MC instead of the girl he's been chasing literally the whole novel and the romance just gets weird. The novel turns from a dark and suspenseful tale of a female MC to two guys fighting over an angsty hikkikomori (albeit she's not one by choice, technically, but after ~c35 chapters of it it starts to feel old).

The novel also ends on a really weird place, where both the MC's brother and former fiance confess to her, she turns both down, and the novel basically ends up with them saying "oh. Now what?" before the author signs off and writes a bonus end chapter. None of the characters properly got a resolution arc, and none of the problems that pervaded the novel really saw a conclusion.

[collapse]

To echo J Doe's comment earlier, "Is there an ML?" No, not at c44 like J Doe got to, but yes in the later chapters, and IMO you're probably not going to like him (them). <<less

I skimmed through the raw and this series is so much more interesting than I expected it would be. While the narration is on the shorter side, the plot is tight and interesting enough to keep you on the edge of your seat

Our MC, Faritima, is framed as a villainess for getting between her fiancee and his lover in their high school academy (a sandbox for the young nobility) and then her whole family is taken down due to embezzlement. After the death of most of her family and herself, she wakes up in the past. Taking the events as a prophetic dream, she tries to change herself and to understand the forces inside and outside her family that threaten her siblings. This is a good read, although the dryness of the... more>> narration (as some reviewers have noted) is a thing, the twisty plot is engaging and our MC is a smart and strong hero. Is there an ML? Unclear but also unnecessary at this point in the story. The plot and the growth of the characters makes this a compelling and at times chilling look at family love and politics. <<less

The plot is pretty interesting but it reads like someone else is telling me about a book they read. It’s a little dry and disconnected.
