Yuan Yi was the eldest daughter of the renowned Jiang family, a famous tea merchant family in Jiangnan. Her talent was well-known, and her beauty unmatched. Several noble sons praised her, saying: “There is Yuan Yi in the Jiang family, a beauty to rival the world.”

In her previous life, Jiang Yuan Yi was married as a concubine to Chu Huan, the heir of the Chu family, the ruling power of Ning’an Kingdom. Tragically, her family was destroyed, her beauty marred, and she became a laughingstock in the capital.

Two prominent young men stood out in the capital: Chu Huan, admired for his exceptional looks and talent, and Xiao Tuo, despised for his reckless and unrestrained nature.

Having lived through her past life, Jiang Yuan Yi knew all too well who was a gentleman and who was a scoundrel. In this new life, she only wished to stay far away from Chu Huan, ensure her family’s safety, and seek happiness with Xiao Tuo.

In her previous life, she had rejected Xiao Tuo’s marriage proposal three times. But in this life, after the tea gathering ended and everyone dispersed, Xiao Tuo stood by the railing, laughing boldly with a teasing tone: “Yuan Yi, will you marry me?”

In his astonished gaze, Jiang Yuan Yi softly replied, “Yes.”

In this life, I will devote myself wholeheartedly to love and care for you alone.

A free-spirited general and a captivating beauty would embark on a journey of love and companionship.

Honestly, the story isn't bad. But it's not amazing either.

If you can get past every other paragraph describing the MC's otherworldly outstanding celestial beauty then looking past the ML's mischievous but up right handsome nature to see what is left of the plot, then it'd be a decent read.

Closer to 2.8 but round up to 3 stars

Strengths:

  • The romance between Jiang Yuan Yi and Xiao Tuo is compelling and emotionally engaging, with their interactions feeling authentic and heartwarming.
  • The story beautifully captures the familial bond, particularly between siblings, adding emotional depth to the narrative.
  • Xiao Tuo’s character, blending humor, confidence, and vulnerability, is a standout and adds charm to the story.
Weaknesses:

  • Some romantic and familial tropes are familiar, which might feel predictable to seasoned readers of the genre.
  • The pacing can feel uneven at times, particularly during scenes where Jiang Yuan Yi’s reflections overshadow the progression of the plot.
  • Certain supporting characters, such as Chu Huan, could have been further developed to provide a stronger contrast to the main relationship.
  • The narrative occasionally over-relies on coincidence (e.g., frequent chance encounters), which might stretch believability.
Overall:

A heartfelt romance that thrives on... more>> emotional depth, and vivid descriptions, though it could benefit from more dynamic pacing and stronger development of secondary arcs. <<less

I read more than half and then couldn't continue. It starts of sweet but something doesn't sit right. It felt like children playing adults.

What I did read of the novel was quite light hearted. The FL and ML love is sweet. But I felt like there wasn't much depth and when I was reading parts, I couldn't quite understand how A got to B.

Anyways, it wasn't my cup of tea.

I read the novel in Chinese so can't comment on the translation.

It’s a 3.5

It’s a sweet story of revenge but more of growth. FL in her rebirth experienced a great growth of character and that is commendable. There is revenge but it’s more in the background compared to the romance part. The villain is an idiot through and through. It’s fast paced and novel is short.

The General’s Wife is Astonishingly Beautiful is a charming and lighthearted novel, perfect for a weekend read. Despite its 86 chapters, the brevity of each made it an easy and enjoyable journey to finish in just two days.

The story can be considered mediocre for some... yeah, it’s not a masterpiece, but it was entertaining for me, especially because it’s short and the main couple is sweet ෆ⃛ (ٛ⌯ॢට ɪ ටٛ⌯ॢ)

Oh and also, the heroine’s second life is incredibly smooth (which can be a setback for readers that don’t like... more>> omnipotent heroines, which fortunately isn’t my case.) ʕ◉ᴥ◉ʔ

Slight spoilers:

Spoiler

In this new chance at life, the female lead Jiang Yuan Yi seamlessly gets her revenge on the three people who ruined her in her past: her despicable husband Chu Huan, his two faced wife He Huilan, and his b*tchy concubine Liu Ruoyan. ꀯ (‴ꑒ᷅⺫ꑒ᷄)

The revenge plot is easily executed. There’s also a sprinkle of political intrigue involving her first husband, but all of these seemed secondary. It looked like the author’s focus was the romance between the main couple. Which was totally worth in my opinion.

[collapse]

The interactions between the female lead Jiang Yuan Yi and the male lead Xiao Tuo are undeniably sweet, and the male lead himself is a standout. (๑ ᴖ ᴈ ᴖ) ᴖ ᴑ ᴖ๑) ₊°♡

He’s respectful, loving, and genuinely supportive—a refreshing change from the scumbag archetypes often found in romantic Chinese novels.

(Seriously, I’ve read so many where the male leads are cold, chauvinistic, or downright cruel to the female leads, so encountering a genuinely kind and caring male lead feels like a breath of fresh air.) His gentle nature and unwavering respect for the heroine earned this novel a well-deserved five-star rating from me.

Another highlight is the heroine’s growth.

Spoiler

She transforms from a sheltered boudoir girl into someone strong, capable, and willing to fight together and to protect the man she loves. Her dedication is admirable—she learns archery, strategy, and medicine, all so she can protect the male lead and ensure his survival. I’m a sucker for intelligent and resilient heroines, and she absolutely fits the bill.

[collapse]

That said, the story isn’t without its flaws.

Spoiler

The most eyebrow-raising moment in the story, for me, was when Xiao Ting Yi—the heroine’s sister-in-law, a legendary female general known for her strategic genius and leadership of an elite all-female battalion—decided to hand command of the battalion at the border to the female lead Jiang Yuanyi.

This decision felt wildly absurd.

The heroine, after all, had only undergone five months of training in archery, horseback riding, and medicine—hardly enough to qualify for such a critical and demanding role of leader of an army. (੭눈 _ 눈) ੭

To the story’s credit, it tries to address this glaring issue. The heroine doesn’t take on the leadership of the battalion role right away. Instead, she undergoes grueling training under the male lead’s guidance, honing her skills and gradually earning the respect of others. (That said, it still feels a bit far-fetched—Xiao Ting Yi, the sister in law, had trained since childhood to reach her position, while the heroine had less than a year of preparation. Let’s just say suspension of disbelief is required.)

Yes, handing command of an army to a rookie might make some readers roll their eyes—and rightly so. But personally, I don’t mind. I love strong, intelligent heroines, even if their rise to power isn’t entirely realistic. And in the end, the heroine not only proves herself capable but also plays a key role in the war effort, changing the tragic course of her first life and ensuring the male lead’s survival. For me, that payoff was worth it.

In summary, The General’s Wife is Astonishingly Beautiful is a smooth and light historical romance that’s a joy to read.

If you enjoy stories that focus more on romance, with strong, intelligent, and determined female leads paired with caring and respectful male leads, this novel is definitely worth your time.

It’s not groundbreaking literature, but it’s a delightful escape and a great way to pass the time. Highly recommended for fans of heartwarming romances! ʕ´•ᴥ•`ʔσ” <<less

This novel was a typical rebirth story where MC married a scum man then died miserably in her previous life and regretted not to marry the "affectionate 2nd ML" type ML who loved her wholeheartedly instead. You could predict what happened after her rebirth: MC immediately accepted ML's passionate love, MC tried to change ML's fate, and MC took revenge on the people who wronged her and her family.

Although the plot was quite generic, the story was still quite enjoyable to read. This story akso had a fast pace so... more>> it didn't take long to finish.

Spoiler

Although I feel that the timeline of some things that happened in MC's current life was a bit inconsistent with some things that happened in MC's past life.

I didn't read the extra yet because I couldn't find the raw anywhere. Will update more after I read that. <<less
