As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.

Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?

But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.

A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

This book honestly deserves all the 5-star reviews it gets. I love the characters and their backstories all made me weep while reading T^T. The names are a bit hard to remember at first but you'll get them after a while. Dont avoid this book because of the long flashbacks either. They have some of the best parts and you'll get s**ked into them real quick. Btw WWX has some of the best dialogue everrrrrrrrr. I wish I would have screenshotted some as I honestly was laughing out loud. Please... more>> read this book if you can :3

Literally a masterpiece. Made me think about how I wanted my future to be happy too lol. <<less

This story is beautiful. I read it right after watching the TV show, and I'm still crying. From time to time I reread it, I regard it and thank goodness there are Fanfictions. There is nothing I would change. So far it's the best BL I've ever read!

the protagonists are unforgettable, the story is compelling and sad but, luckily, it has a nice ending. It is a story that has left a great mark on my heart.

We all dream of a love story like this

Absolutely one of the best danmei novels and the second I've read. Characters are complicated and three-dimensional, plot well-thought and Wei Wuxian made me laugh so many times I can't count them all. All the side stories are very interesting and touching, CP is also one of the best ones I've seen. MC and ML trust each other and in each other and they're both very capable. Their interactions are the funniest and cutest. Funniest character reward goes to Lan Zhan.

This novel left me amazed, awed, speechless, in love. I'm in love with this novel.

Thank you author for writing this beautiful story. Please continue writing beautiful stories.

Thank you translators for translating so beautifully. Keep the good work up.

... more>> After reading this novel my BL standards have gotten so high, they're probably somewhere in the sky. Damn will I be able to read another BL after this?! I probably will because I'm a BL fan. But, will I love another BL this much?! This, I don't know.

Positive points of the novel in my opinion:

The main characters are very likeable. The side charcters too, are very likeable, to the point that you'd want to read and know more about them.

All the events and advetures that occur in the story are very interesting and mind blowing; they keep you on your toes and make you wonder what's gonna happen next.

Negative points of the novel in my opinion:

Due to its focus on the events and adventures, it does not focus on the characters, their interactions, their feelings and their relationships enough to make you feel like you've read and know about them enough. But it could just be that I love the characters too much and thus, want to know about them too much.

Even though all the events are explained fully, there are certain details which need more explanation, but are left out. It makes you ask yourself: "How did this happen?" But like I said, maybe I'm too curious and want to know every single detail. It's natural to be curious about sth you love very much though.

So, no, I'm not gonna give any spoilers. Just read it. If you're a BL fan who likes supernatural, adventures, ancient times and cultivation, you won't regret reading this. <<less

Overall 4.5/5

MDZS is one of my absolute favorite of all xianxia novels. It was the second ancient chinese bl novel I read after Hua Hua You Long and the one that got me into this genre, I read the novel back in 2019 and fell in love with everything about it.

Plot 5/5

The plot is satisfying and not to long or short although with charcters like Wangji and Wei Ying, you never want to leave them. I am absolutely in live with MXTX's plot building and writing style and after reading... more>> all her novels, find MDZS on second number after TGCF.

Characters : 500/5

Lan Wangji will always be my number one ML even ahead of Hua Cheng from TGCF although he could have my right arm. The character development of both ML and MC is satisfactory and beautifully written infact, because Wangji smells like sandalwood I have resorted to burning sandalwood scented incense sticks since last one year. I love the character of Jiang Cheng as well as Zewu Jun. The best thing I like about MXTX novels are that even the main villains are so good well written and not senseless and petty. The main charcters are also not overpowered or invincible and their journey makes them look human as well as relatable.

Translation 5/5

No complaints. <<less

I never enjoy yaoi, novel or manga, AT ALL. But this one really dragged me to this yaoi pleasure abyss. And I gladly refuse to recover. Now I even search for yaoi tag, and greedily read. OMG, the story is just so beautiful, plot well written, multi layered character. I love the author, and thankful for the translator.

I laugh, I cried, I giggle, I scream, all those mixed emotion you know you feel when you read a wonderful story. The romance are SLOW and REAL. But I guarantee it will... more>> tickled your heart and just want to embrace both of ML to show them your support.

Plot-driven, detailed world-building and creative characterisation. Lots of names that were hard to keep track of, but the main cast of characters were memorable and endearing.

Mischievous, teasing WWX and stoic, prim LWJ are perfect foils for each other, they are best couple and best comedy duo. The romance between them is not highlighted until the later end of the novel, but when it does it'll make you squeal like a grade schooler and at the same time warm your heart.

To be honest, I was really reluctant/afraid to pick up this novel due to its BL genre, but since I was thinking of watching cdrama The Untamed, which reviews say it diverted from the BL genre, so I finally decided to start reading. Result was, THIS NOVEL BLEW ME AWAY! I basically couldn't put it down until I reach the ending. The plots are extremely well written, there's no lose connections between them, characters are very interesting with believable development, interactions between characters are meaningful and engaging. Aside from the... more>> extremely explicit s*x scenes (especially the r*pe scene OMG) which I really can't swallow, everything else is pitch perfect that leaves me in awe most of the time with each arc. I really love the two leads and how the development of their relationship went. Wei Wuxian is truly a lovable character with unmoving principles, much like Lan Wangji but in a distinctly opposite way. Despite not being in the same boat of this type of genre, I truly admire how the author wrote of Lan Wangji's silent devotion towards Wei Wuxian right from the beginning to the end. Wei Wuxian being oblivious about it is so cute and hilarious. The author's truly a genius!

All in all, it is truly one of the best novel I've ever read!

I just realized I didnt rate this novel. Arghh! Of course its 5 stars! <<less

This novel pulled me back into novels after so long so it'll always have the best place in my heart. Even though mdzs is my least favourite of mxtx, the novel cannot be compared to anything outside of mxtx novels.

The flow of the novel is well hard to follow, the plot itself is beautiful, the characters are so well written, the setting is exceptional. Tbh at times I couldn't understand what tf was going on at all, the action parts are hard to understand, like I said the whole flow... more>> of the novel just was too complex. That's why when I read tgcf after this, it was like a fresh breath, like coming out of a more sophisticated heaven to just a pure heaven. Nonetheless, the novel is godly, defintely give it a try!! <<less

Literally, the best book I have ever read. There so much about this book that works, not just the amazing We Ying and Lan Zhan pairing, but the plot is mind blowing as well. Because of that, I want to take some time to analyze this book. Everything about it made me want to keep reading.

Spoiler

There's more than enough mystery to keep readers interested. Wei WuXian's reason for rebirth, then wanting to know the mystery behind why Jiang Cheng hates him, why he slapped himself for what he said about Jin Ling (about why he's calling for his uncle not his father), why Lan Wangji wants to take him back to the Lan Sect, what is up with this cut-up hand, who the hell is Wen Ning, and what the hell happened in the past. Another thing that works really well is that this story is set in the future, so all the tragic events that were to happen have already happened. The readers already know what the "future" looks like due to those events, so the heartbreak, while still strong and just as deep, is not completely unexpected.

Now about character development. All the characters in this story are HUMAN. They feel like real people, with real emotion and struggles and egos. The villains are not evil for the sake of being evil (well, except the Wen sect), they have reasons to why they are that way. Trust me, towards the end even I wanted to forgive Meng Yao. Xu Yang (?) as well, I felt bad for him, for his past as well as his loss of the blind guy (I'm blanking on the name). Jiang Cheng made me want to slap him through out the story yet in end, I also felt that what happened really couldn't have been prevented and his feeling of enmity towards Wei WuXian were just. Those are just some of the examples. Now lets talk about Wei WuXian. I understand why he came to the end he did in his first life. He had to choose mo dao because he had no other choice but he didn't learn to control it properly, nor did he guard against the people now viewing HIM and his power as a threat after the Wen Sect. The misunderstanding between Wei WuXian and Lan Wangji were not forced to create drama. The tragedy of it was that Wei WuXian truly didn't understand the dept of Lan Zhan's feelings for him because Lan Zhan never clearly expressed it, which again is in accordance with his character.

My point is, that everything about this book made sense. It was real, whether it be the characters, the plot, people's natures or the misunderstanding. It all felt real and like a sad truth.

But the BEST part of this book is that even after all this sadness in the past, we still get a happy ending. The author also did good holding off s*x until all the action was over because I have a tendency to lose interest once the main couple gets together (not that I would have done this with this book).

One bad thing is though, that the writing is a lot of info dumps. If the story had been more refined it would have been unbeatable to me but still...

My favorite book ever, my love for you will be eternal, just like WangXian <<less

Note: I haven't watched CQL, so my review is based entirely off of the novel.

MDZS is a great starter novel due to its relatively small cast, lack of confusing family trees, and excellent worldbuilding. The main couple is strong and have chemistry and the side characters are relatively well-developed. The reason why I hesitate to give this novel 5/5 stars is:

Spoiler

The way the story ends for Jiang Cheng, who is my favourite character (as he's the most realistic to me and the one I related to the most), is sad. Almost every other character, aside from the ones who died obviously, get happy endings. Oh, and Lan Xichen, who meditated for a year only to realize he's still depressed. But Jiang Cheng's final thoughts in the novel being about how he's going to carry the burden of having saved Wei Wuxian for the rest of his life just made me miserable. Yeah, I'm petty and am rating this lower because of how my favourite character was treated. Then again, it speaks to how well-written Jiang Cheng is that I got so attached to his storyline and invested in his future, so take that how you will.

[collapse]

MDZS is the novel I recommend to people getting into Danmei because it packages Ancient Chinese aesthetic with fantasy into an easy-to-swallow package. MDZS' primary strength compared to many other novels is that it doesn't take a trillion chapters to get to the interesting parts, and almost every chapter adds something relevant to the plot or the characters. It's easy to get invested into the world of MDZS; the political and relationship drama are easy to comprehend while still providing interesting twists when necessary.

It also contains more interesting family relationships than simply 'the evil stepmom hates the prodigal son' and other cliche tropes like that. Family members react realistically to each other and other people who interact with them. It's very refreshing to read a novel where the main family receives plot development that affects all of them and not just the main character, aside from:

Spoiler

Jiang Yanli, who dies, solely for the sake of Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian's character development. Yeah, I know, her death served a purpose so I'm not that mad about it, but it's pretty silly that every single woman in this novel dies tragically and is only mourned by their remaining family. It sucks because while JC and WWX's relationship is by far my favourite in the novel, I have to imagine there were ways to leave at least ONE major female character alive? Similarly to the deaths in TGCF, Jiang Yanli's death feels played up for shock value. It's like MXTX doesn't know how to write side character development without it involving people dying tragically.

[collapse]

If I wasn't so bitter, it would be more like a 4.5/5. The reason it still falls behind TGCF for me, in terms of MXTX novels, is because (while more complex) the worldbuilding in TGCF was also more interesting to me. But if you prefer your cultivators over your gods, then MDZS is probably more up your alley. <<less

this novel is just *chef's kiss*

i really love the plot and twists, the characters, everything. This novel is the one that introduced me to the whole danmei world and it became my base standard for the other novels that I'm reading / have or will read as it already set the bar high. Love this novel!!! Lan Zhan was my fav character, I simple love how even after waiting in so much pain for Wei Ying, when he appeared and seemed to not return his feelings he still stayed by him to protect him.

Wei Wuxian as a character was amazing, love him as much as I did LWJ!

Fav part of this novel was how the villain stopped his plan to inquire about the double rooms! Hahahah

Number 1 Number 1!! Love this so much. It's really really good (not exaggerating). I have no idea how many times I have re-read this and watched this novel's other adaptations.

The mystery and suspense created in between just made it harder to not continue reading the next chapter. Although through the progress of the story there will be sudden chapters of the MC's backstory, but it was those backstory flashbacks that will have you feel torn and tormented from the heavy feelings they bring. It has been a fujoshi for a long time, even recovering from fujoshi but stuck back to fujoshi because of this novel.

This novel is my first BL novel, before, I was not a fan of the novel. Just reading comics or watching BL anime, never even a novel. So good is this novel, , I came to read all versions of this story, from drama, manhua, to the audio cd. And well, among all the versions I like the version of the novel the most.

Not only are the main characters good, but all the characters even up to the villains --you might not even be able to hate villains.--

Everything is very logical.

This is by far one of the most well written yaoi novel I've ever read.. Character development is just perfect.. Read it multiple times, yet never got tired..

I'm amazed with Lan Wangji.. A lover like him can make everything heavenly.. Each and every one is so lifelike.. Even the disgust I felt towards Meng Yao felt so real..

I'm hooked up with this BL..

Although it was confusing for some time since it was my first ever ancient China novel I really enjoyed it. It was an entirely new experience for me which makes it all the better but also all the worse since mt standards for books with the same tags are very high. Anyway, I really look forward to exploring ancient China through similar novels and I will earnestly wait for all the dramas based off the books I've read. Much like MDZS became The Untamed.

I've reread this novel many times. Watched the donghua adaptation, watched the web series adaptation, and am reading the webtoon adaptation right now. It is beautiful and well written. Although sometimes I get confused with the abundance of characters, it is amazing and I can't stress how much I am obsessed with this series.
