As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.

Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?

But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.

A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

I read this over a year ago and let me tell you, it's great. Although not the longest Chinese novel i've read, it is definitely one of the hardest to keep up with. With all its time jumping and characters, it can be hard to keep track of. That being said, it is totally worth it.

P.S. This book and all of MXTX novels are getting published in English. They release in December 2021. It is going to be released in volumes over the next year or so. Please, if you... more>> can, support this novel officially by buying the official release. It is available for pre-order on Barnes & Nobel, and a few other places. <<less

What do you need me to say? That this is a great novel? It is. That this is the first Chinese cultivation novel that I read that subsequently made me interested in all this? It is. That I want to forget everything in order to be able to experience it all over again? I do. But all well-known facts aside, I want to mention some really important aspects that make this novel stand out for me, after I have already read a few more similar and not very similar stories.

I... more>> appreciate the world building in Mo Dao Zu Shi. The amount of sects, locations, and characters is astounding, and I simply am overjoyed that I have the opportunity to say something like "my favourite character is..., what about yours?". And the answer can include but is not limited to MC and his sidekick. Everybody in the story is valuable, everybody is memorable and worth paying attention to. Everybody is a person of their own and I remember them for who they were and what they did. There is variety here, storytelling, world building, many plot lines that are interwoven and entangled, and one cannot help but desire to find out what it all ends with.

Such a story I can respect. Yet again, I do not like the way intimacy between LWJ and WWX is described here, but to each their own, I guess. The story makes it worth the read anyway, even if I am unsatisfied with some minor details. <<less

I rate this as a must-read. The characters were almost all nicely fleshed out and had their own stories. I really enjoyed the plot, the mystery, and the eventual reveals. I'm not typically a fan of xanxia, but this was great. If BL is a deterrent, honestly it doesn't even come into play until maybe the last 25 chapters.

I loved almost all of the novel and then was rather disappointed by the conclusion. Adrenaline was pumping until the point that they finished reminiscing the past. I was on the edge. But the fallout after reaching the peak of excitement was rather steep. Felt like a GoT moment for me. Nevertheless, the story finished pretty conclusively, and the ride was insane.

This was the first danmei I've read or a BL novel in general. Came here after the untamed and did not disappoint at all. The ML and MC chemistry is undeniable and MC is the cutest bean ever. ML did seem harsh in the beginning but his devotion and his love for MC later on was just amazing.

I read this book a year ago, and to be very honest, its the best thing that has happened to me. LWJ and WWX are just the cutest. The way MC is oblivious... more>> might get readers thinking that he's very annoying, but from my POV the things he had to go through didn't really make him feel like he was worthy of kindness or anyone's endless devotion. This novel made me cry multiple times and it was worth it in the end. The first line of the book is just different pain altogether.

"Great news! Wei WuXian has died!"

*cries*

Spoiler

The burning of lotus pier, WN killing JZX, Yanli's death, LWJ punishment and mourning, golden core reveal, Yi city arc, Xiao XingChen and Song Lan, Jin Ling's orphanage, Wei Wuxian's death.

Aside from the love story, the whole plot was very well told. Founding of demonic cultivation, fierce corpses, resentful energy, cultivation all of this opened a new reader's mind to a whole new world. WWX and LWJ are strong people in their own rights. WWX keeps all his pain hidden away by his smiles and laughter, he's the most humorous character in the book. Every character has their own story and can justify their actions except well, the antagonist.

Definitely must read, don't stop reading because WWX is very flippant, but you will grow to love him and this story. He's an irrefutable genius and people don't give him any credit for it. I've seen a lot of people talking about how shallow WWX's character is or how he doesn't have any personality or whatever. He really is one very much hated protagonist because people see what he has done than look at the reasons behind why he chose to do it. At first he was infuriating, but you really grow to love him despite all of this.

Spoiler

Jin GuangyYao and Xue Yang's wrongdoings didn't come even 0.5% of what Wei WuXian did.

[collapse]

This is a must read. I don't write reviews but looking back to the impact this book had on me a year ago, when I mentally wasn't in a good place, this book gave me something to focus on and I will never regret reading this book or loving these characters. <<less

This is literally one of the best stories I've come across so far!

The characters are all well-rounded, with goals, backstories, and lots of development. Additionally, there is space for interpretation, as well as the fact that the characters serve the story, not the other way round.

One fact I especially loved is that some of the antagonists as well as other characters, including supporting and lead, are morally grey.

... more>> The story has been with me for ober a year now, and I still keep thinking about it, going back to certain scenes.

I can only recommend this to you, and let me tell you.... it's so worth it! <<less

This novel was so good. I took too long to finally read the novel, but now, in 2021, I finally put my foot down and decided to stick with the novel version of the story of MDZS, and two weeks and a couple hundred thousand words later, I'm here, finally finished it! (Well, not yet the extras but I'll do that today too aha.)

That past two weeks, I have been crying, laughing, teasing, judging, crying again and again, and getting angry and frustrated at the characters and the story.... more>> It was truly such a joy to read. I've loved WWX since first I encountered him, and I was always so excited to learn more about him. He's my favorite, in simplest terms, but then throughout the novel I've also come to love so many other characters, even those I initially thought I would dislike all throughout, or remain at most indifferent towards. It is truly a testament to the talents and capabilities of the author, and the rich emotions that were still conveyed through the loving and painstaking works of fan translators, that there is not a single complex character in this series that can inspire a simple dismissal of love or hate.

Anyway, this is much too long. I'm glad I decided enough was enough and simply went on with it. MDZS is gorgeous; I haven't cried that hard in years. It's such a poignant love story, but besides a love story it was such a colorful, wonderful, painful tapestry of human connections and relationships that take place in a fantastical setting; family ties, love, loyalty, propriety, the question of morality, good and evil, pure and bad, appearances and reality... My god. And so funny too.

Thanks to the fan translators for bringing these works to light! I'll try to preorder MXTX's official translations as well. <<less

It took me a few days to finish reading this, but all that time I was completely immersed. This is such a great read, even if you usually don't read novels, this one is worth it. Came here from the cdrama.

Maybe I'll find another decent historical cultivation novel in the future, but to this day this is the only cultivation danmei that I like–i tried to read MXTX other novels but I don't like them that much...

The plot is close to heavy, characters are "alive", villains are not that brainless, and the ending is pretty much concluded.

It has downsides tho, but the most that got me on edge until the end of the story is how the author explained everything on detail BUT Wei Wuxian's death... They only used 2-3... more>> sentences to "explain" his death like wthh??? What exactly happened this is one of the most crucial plots u knooo'....... I can turn blind eye to the other downsides BUT THIS.

(I'm sorry I was really suffered reading all those details with that back and forth plot, really was a ride tried to understand what exactly happened, but in the end WWX death is pretty much left to our imagination wthhh QAQ)

Anyway, thank you BCMay for making the donghua–donghua brought me here, and translators thank you for your hard work ^^ <<less

This is my first danmei novel and it got me hooked on reading it all day. Really love how the characters' chemistries are in the story and how we got to try to solve the mysteries along with the characters. This might be the first danmei for me but it sure opens up my world for danmei and BL novels. Big thanks for the translator of doing a really good job for bringing this novel for english readers <3

I absolutely love this, the last battle feels a little bit rushed and some mysteries aren’t actually solved, but those things don’t take away from the story at all. It’s very easy to understand, especially if (like me) you don’t understand Cultivation novels

In this second life, do you think Wei WuXian can clear up his own name? And in this second life, can you count how many uncles Jin Ling have? XD. Just read it!

I don't want to drag anyone who's not yet tained here so a little warning. This novel includes profanities, a lot of explicit details about s*xual interc**rses (especially in the extras).

I rate this novel 4.7 out of 5 stars. After a lot of flashbacks, your heart will receive a lot of butterflies and band aids so you'll definitely... more>> heal despite of crying in so many chapters so worry not!

I highly recommend this novel to the readers who love WuXia novels and wanted an exciting roller coaster ride! Yes to homo in the second life is a must! *Winks* <<less
