I don’t want to work.

“I don’t want to work. I feel like I’m about to go crazy from being too bored. It would be nice if I could work just a little and make lots of money. I guess playing and eating is just the right talent for me. Is there any way to live without working?”

(Completed up to the first extra chapter. Current translations are pretty much MTL, so I recommend just MTLing the raws. Ridibooks is easily accessible to foreigners.)

Foreigner on the Periphery is a work that I hesitate to categorize as a light novel. It's not a power fantasy, reincarnation story, or fantasy adventure; it's a deep dive into societal issues, philosophy, theology, and ultimately what makes a person a person. It's a story that leaves you thinking, which is something that is rarely seen in most novels here.

As the plot... more>> unfolds, you begin to realize just how layered everything is. Things are not as they seem, and it rewards reading between the lines. The characters are unique and consistent, and the worldbuilding is some of the best I've seen in fiction. The only weakness I found is that the ending felt a little rushed, and some may not like the direction the story takes in the second half.

This novel has cemented itself as one of my favorites, even topping Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint. I highly recommend checking it out. <<less

I clicked on this not really expecting much from the sypnosis but I have to say, the three translated chapters are really good! The author does a pretty good job (thus far) on the minor plot twists injected in the narrative. There’s a lot of details that haven’t been revealed about the world building yet but I can see them slowly being described which gives enough of a mysterious air to keep me interested. Gotta see how this progresses eventually but for now I’ll keep waiting for updates!

The story is good, sci-fi, fantasy, etc...

But the one thing makes me give this 4 star is the translation quality.

The TL sometimes refer the male character as "she", and female as "he", it alternate few times when the MC doing monologue or to describe others.

Also some description is confusing (you will know when you read it, I am lazy to search it but its there). Wish the TL do a better job..

But overall its a good read.

World building is insanely good.

i love the MC’s background so far, it makes me want to read more and more and more to uncover exactly who he was and what he did to need 5 million Talents to repay

the story itself is 10/10

the translation quality could be better tho

I really liked this one because it actually delivered on the mystery/thriller sci-fi theme the description promises.

The main character was interesting and the question of his identity and species was unravelled beautifully, A+ from me.

Where it loses some points for me and gets 3-4 Stars instead of 5 is due to the later part of the novel where the plot kinda... gets lost, in a way? Like yes, it does still follow the through-line and makes sense in a way, but all the detective and mystery aspects from the first... more>> half pretty much completely disappear and get replaced with (I'm not sure if this is a spoiler, so please do alert me if I should censor it) space battles in star-cruisers.

Sounds kinda awesome, yeah, but it's more anticlimactic than I'd hoped when, at this point, you know the main character's motivations and he pretty much just stands there as things explode around him. This isn't all the time, mind you, and god forbid I dissuade someone from reading this novel when it's otherwise really cool and I want to get more people into it, but you should know what you're getting into. The chapters past the half-way point were noticeably slower than the ones before, in my opinion - though not so much that I didn't want to continue the novel.

I have to be honest too that I didn't like the conclusion and the, in my opinion, slightly haphazard way it came to be. Still, it is serviceable and I did still really enjoy the story overall + the characters' interactions with each other.

The other characters are decent enough and I liked some of them just as much as the MC, so props for that.

One last complaint, since I do have to mention it:

I feel like there was a bit of a character switch of the MC after a while in the latter half, where the author decided not to actually make him as radical as he'd portrayed him in some aspects before and instead 'softened' him in some ways to make the ending work.

To be precise:

Spoiler

The part where the MC talks about his desire to actually genocide a whole race of aliens because they wronged him and his people, being 100% serious, getting into his plans to accomplish that goal and discussing it with his allies when BAM! In a later chapter he just... decides not to? Which he can do being an uber-powerful primordial race but then where did that hatred from before go??

He does say he still wants to make them suffer, and he kinda does in the end, but like how'd it go from 'I'll kill them all, I don't care what you say' to 'no, ignore what I said before, now that you've talked to me about the same three reasons that's a bad idea I suddenly changed my mind and won't just slaughter them all with my bare hands anymore and instead just kill like half by segregating them and waiting for them to die by themselves'.

You see what I mean? His hatred for the other species is still there, I won't even argue it isn't, but the visceral anger from before was missing for me, the one where he actively went out of his way to kill them and plan something that'll annihilate them in the most painful way possible.

This all would be fine if it had been a more gradual development mind you, but it came as a bit of a surprise when the last thing I knew was that he still held onto his genocidal plans even as his allies tried to talk him down and then he just decided from one moment to the next that letting them die off naturally is fine.

I either accidentally overlooked some of that slow change of mind (possible since I had to MTL the later chapters) or it just wasn't there. If we do get a complete translation that's well done and it does turn out I was just a dumbass that can't read, then I apologise and you can feel free to ignore my previous gripe.

[collapse]

In the end though, despite my multiple complaints (that come from a place of love! Please believe me, I do really, really like this novel) I do still see this as a solid 3.5 - 4 Star read.

Please, read it and don't take my word for it. I know I sounded really negative in some places but these gripes mostly get overshadowed by the positive I didn't extensively touch on -- but do believe me when I say that there were many more times I had genuine fun while reading and was shocked at the twists then I had grievances!

Do yourself a favour and read it, please. The first half, if nothing else, is one of the best sci-fi novels I've read in the last while. <<less
