In the picturesque city of Marnia, Lisbell Osborne, on the verge of marrying her fiancé, reluctantly finds herself drawn to Ulrich Altahart, scion of the prestigious Altahart family. Their initial encounter is marked by Lisbell’s unease and Ulrich’s enigmatic charm.

“Nice to meet you. I am Ulrich Altahart,” Ulrich’s voice resonated with a captivating allure.

“P-pleased to meet you. I am Lisbell Osborne,” Lisbell stammered, unable to tear her gaze away from his mesmerizing presence.

As Lisbell grapples with conflicting emotions, her world is upended when her mother faces accusations of theft, forcing her back to Marnia and into Ulrich’s orbit once more. Faced with the daunting task of seeking Ulrich’s assistance, Lisbell confronts him with trepidation:

“You asked for leniency, right? Then come to the room next to the study. I’m curious to see if your staunch devotion can really handle it,” Ulrich’s words hung heavy in the air, tinged with a hint of challenge.

“What do you mean… that place is…” Lisbell’s voice faltered, her mind racing with uncertainty.

Trapped in a delicate dance of attraction and obligation, Lisbell grapples with Ulrich’s demands and her own moral compass. Amidst the idyllic backdrop of Marnia, she finds herself ensnared in a tumultuous relationship with Ulrich, where every choice she makes threatens to plunge her deeper into despair. Will Lisbell find the strength to break free from Ulrich’s hold before it’s too late?

This book made me realize how very selective I am about my yandere MLs. I love an obsessive, possessive man—I'm not going to lie. Over the years, I've collected a list of books featuring them. But I only like them when, despite their craziness, they still care about the FMC's feelings. Give me a walking red flag, but at least make him crazy in love with the FMC—he can hurt other people, but never her. Is that too much to ask?

I don't want to pour all my hate into this... more>> review because I did sign up for something toxic as hell. But I underestimated just how toxic it would be. Girl, I hate the ML here. Like, really. I am disgusted by him. He's insane—not just in a figurative sense, but he is clinically a psychopath. He has no conscience. He doesn't feel bad when the FMC suffers; in fact, he likes her broken. He enjoys humiliating her, mocking her, and watching her cry. He laughs at her pain.

This is where I draw the line. This is my hard boundary. No amount of groveling will make up for this.

I usually don't mind noncon too much in dark romance, but the way it was written here unsettled me. There's a scene where the ML ties a necktie around the FMC's neck, attaches it to the bedpost, and has s*x with her while she's struggling not to choke. She's actively trying to breathe while being assaulted. I mean... guys?? I'm speechless.

And this ML doesn't just destroy the FMC physically—he breaks her. He makes her question herself, makes her feel trapped. She doesn't make bad decisions because she's weak or s*upid; she makes them because she genuinely has no way out. I kept thinking: If I were her, what would I even do differently? Maybe stab him in the eyes and cut off his d*ck and k*ll myself?

Then there's the way he forces her during the act, mocking her the entire time, belittling her just to make sure she knows how lowly he thinks of her. I mean, not to kink-shame, but... who enjoys this? I love dark romance, but there has to be some element of romance in the darkness—not just torture p0rn. I don't know what the author was going for, but I hope we, as readers, still have standards higher than this. I'm sorry, I am a degenerate, and I usually eat up tr*shy romance, but this? This just upset me.

I know some authors write s*umbag MLs so that their redemption arcs hit harder, but if you go too far, some readers just won't care anymore. I, for one, do not care. I don't care if this ML crawls and begs later—there is nothing he can do to make me forgive him. I'm dropping this at chapter 65. He forced her again, even when she was mentally and physically unwell, her body barely recovered from almost freezing to death while trying to escape him. And once again—not a sliver of remorse.

I AM DONE.

I usually don't give books 1-star ratings, but I'll make an exception. This one deserves it. <<less

Oof, this is such a difficult read. I can do toxic, obsessive, cruel and villainous MLs, but Ulrich is where I’ll have to draw the line. This isn’t angst anymore. If the storyline can explain the motives behind the ML’s choices, I can usually get behind the plot/romance. Not this time. The writing is great as usual from this author and the translation is wonderful, thus the rating. However, the story is tough to digest. I feel suffocated and tortured. I can’t even say the FL is weak because, um,... more>> to be caught in Ulrich’s line of sight means one is already doomed. I find myself rooting for a tragedy so our FL can escape in any way she can. *Sighs* Good luck stomaching the insanity. <<less

Probably not going to be a fan of the FL. Consistent poor decisions, spine like a jellyfish, and just really weak SO FAR.

Now on to the ML. He's straight up evil. The things he does to get/keep her is extreme to put it mildly.

Spoiler

Bribes a policeman to fake a police report saying her mother stole something. Then he tells her "sleep with me and your mom's free". After he legit r*pes and strangles her, she finds out her mom was just on an overnight errand. He just laughs at her.

Why the 5 stars? Well translated and honestly well written. You're going to hate Ulrich, and it is described in detail. At this point I want him to keep torturing her, because she asks for it. Let's see her fail to run away and become a brainless victim to his perverse s*xual ab*se.. I mean deep love. Oh and the smut is hot if you like that sort of bedroom play.

Update: yeaahhh Ulrich is a class a evil guy. I'll wait for the payout.

has her held captive under the guise of taking care of her terminally ill mother (that he will not let her visit). Looking very strongly that the mother has been dead for quite a while.
