The Duke’s lost daughter has returned.

The birth of a child living with poor treatment in a nursery school was discovered belatedly.

Everyone embraced her and greeted her with open arms.

But I, the person in charge, wasn’t happy at all.

Because this place wasn’t mine.

* * *

Be me and… Live up to my part.”

My friend who died after leaving those words was the princess of the nursery school where I live.

However, the fragile child was unable to survive the winter, when the cold wave was extremely harsh.

On the verge of death, what she told me was the secret of her birth.

I went to a man with her belongings.

The father of my friend, and the only duke in this country, who lost his daughter.

“I am the daughter of the Duke.”

For the first time, I spoke a lie I had never said before.

It didn’t matter even if the truth was revealed, and she was denounced as a villain.

I wish I could give her everything she wanted.

After going missing at birth, a nobleman's daughter is found, and the aristocratic household celebrates. Of course, the twist is that the only the girl herself knows she is not the daughter of the duke. I didn't have very high expectations when reading the description, but I was intrigued by what seemed like the daughter's fixation with her friend.

She is cynical, skeptic, and mistrusting of others. The only person she does trust is her friend, who is like a ray of light to brighten her world. So when her friend... more>> dies, she burns the promise to live her part into her heart. Always thinking about the unfairness of why her friend died, she tries her best to wear the mask of the lost duke's daughter, a gentle and polite lady, while plotting best how to earn everyone's affection so her lies aren't revealed. Until the day she has lived her friend's share and falsehoods can no longer be hidden. <<less

It was.. mediocore at best... I did enjoy the novel, but somehow there are many things that I feel like left unsatisfied..

FL is not that unlikable, but not that good either.. ML is typical older brother type, but idk, I feel like he is lil bit lacking as lead.. lol maybe because I read too much novel with OP leads...

In this novel, both FL & ML are not OP, even the father (duke) himself. So don't expect too much. The duke is... surprisingly weak.. he didnt shine the slightest, there... more>> is no lovey dovey things, even with huge unreveal in the end of the story, nothing notable happened.

To me, nothing really heartwarming with this one. Honestly, the romance, familial relationship, tragedy, all feel somewhat short..

I had mixed feelings after completing this novel. The premise of the novel is good, it starts off as a very interesting story. Some parts of the story made me shed tears, especially how the FL tried hard to live as her BF. Then suddenly, there are these time skips. Not enough explanation is given, and the story seemed to be lacking and short. Truly, the idea of the story is good, but why not delve deeper and make it longer? For example,

there is a sudden time skip when the FL, once a 10-year-old girl, suddenly becomes a 17-year-old girl. There isn't much explanation of how the FL coped with her life as a fake daughter and how the relationship between her and the duke developed. I mean, the story was good, but it could be better if it were longer and described what actually happened during those seven years. As a reader, I want to know how the FL got closer to her father and see more heartwarming scenes. Sadly, no. I don't know, but it left me feeling a bit unsatisfied and empty inside.

[collapse]

This happened a few more times. Like, it was actually a good story, but why did it turn out like this? Why so short and unsatisfying?

Lastly, the ending. This one left me very much perplexed. Like what nekopawpaws said in her review, after such a big reveal, nothinh notable happened.

Spoiler

The FL chose not to reveal the truth of her birth to her father and, in the end, her father decided to announce her as the duchy's successor and as the stepdaughter of his wife. Like, what the hell? After such a big reveal, just that? Really? It left me feeling frustrated. Like, why, hello girl, why don't you tell your father that you are his and his wife's biological daughter, the one that he had been searching for and missing his entire life? Maybe the author wanted to point out that the father's feelings for the FL are not caused by blood but because the father already regarded the FL as his child, whether real or fake, or the so-called true love. I don't know, but I think it would be better if she told her father.

[collapse]

The FL seemed emotionally detached from her parents. Aside from this, the romance was also a bit lacking. I wish this story was longer and deeper; it could be much better. Overall, it was a quite good read to pass the time. <<less

Great idea, lacklustre execution. It vaguely reminds me of "the bad ending of an otome game" and "how to live as the mad duke's fake daughter". While the two novels referenced have their highs and lows, this one feels quite mid throughout.

The romance is weak, the family dynamics part doesn't tug my heartstrings, the anxiety/tragedy feels contrived, there isn't much mystery to keep me curious. Really like what Nekopawpaws said, nothing notable happened. Which, in my opinion, only works for healing type of novels.

The premise hooked me from the start. To be honest, I don't think the execution was ever really quite there yet, but it was a story contrived of a young girl's attachment and love for her dead friend, akin to a sister to her. That was the theme that underlines this whole story, and it starts with her friend's death, with the FL deciding to live as her (to literally take on her characteristics, her life, her goals) and ends with the FL accepting and learning to live with it.... more>> I think this take was particularly so unique, especially with how most authors utilise this trope as a her vs. Her sort of situation, but this author decided to spin it into a tale of loss, grief, and how someone copes with the absence of someone dear who has gone. I've never personally experienced it, but I can imagine how painful it must be to lose someone, where it was so normal for them to be part of their life, and how startingly empty their life is when their gone, and afterwards, how life moves on even in their absence. This story potrays these emotions very well, and although it is not the best, it is worth reading.

if there were any criticisms, there would be a lot. For one, the characters aren't fleshed out incredibly well (except the main character),
Spoiler

the duke is honestly just very s*upid (?). He doesn't seem to be very sharp because for like most of the book, he has no idea what the people closest to him are up to at all, which just does go against his characterisation as someone supposedly very powerful politically. Also dude if umyou loved your daughter you would at least give her a guard? Or try to know where she is most of the time? Or at least try to find out whatever the f*ck is going on? I liked that theo was the ml, because honestly I was just a bit sick of mls being dukes or princes or whatever, and I think the tension between his choice of duty and love was okay (although very s*upid, sponsering children could be beneficial to the duchy as well if done well as it would allow then to wield more power in various fields that the children are sent to) but overall his character was a bit bland? I can't remember other defining characteristics of his? And my biggest irk is with swan, because she just seems too perfect? Like is she not a child as well?

The novel was quite emotional and interesting. What I personally didn't like was her obsession with her childhood friend, it's blurred her vision to see the truth and avoid so much suffering. Also I didn't like the fact that she didn't tells her dad the truth at the end.

Starts off really strong, but the woe is me mentality starts to drag as the chapters go on. Great concept, still worth the read and you definitely get hooked to know the end, but execution has room to improve. The last several chapters are also quite abrupt with wrap-up, as if the author also felt it was going on too long and they just needed to tie it all back.
