The Earth is Online

Six months ago, tens of thousands of black phantom towers appeared all over the world, floating above the cities. Chemists, physicists, religious people… all of them could do nothing.

Six months later, people became used to the towers and no longer paid them attention.

One day, Tang Mo saw a flying insect crash into it instead of going through it. The next day, a sharp and clear child-like voice issued an announcement to all humans.

“Ding dong! November 15th, 2017. The earth is online.”

The black tower’s three iron-clad rules:

1. Everything is explained by the black tower.

2. 6 o’clock to 18 o’clock is the game time.

3. All players, please strive to attack the tower.

This novel is BLOODY BRILLIANT! Bloody and brilliant, take note of these two words please. Tag warnings for violence, blood and gore... I mean, its a survival story so these aspects abound here.

I love the healthy relationship between Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo; their tacit understanding of each other, their trust in each other, the respect for each other... its all so refreshing to read. the slowburn romance is a major plus point of this story for me. it made me anticipate the little gestures and savour their romance. however,... more>> I was really disappointed by this thing:

Spoiler

their first time doing papapa was described only in a few words using gun metaphors!!! I mean, the whole buildup to physical intimacy was just destroyed... I really wanted to read their first time in a bit more details. this left me very dissatisfied.

[collapse]

i didnt find many problematic aspects with the story except body-shaming. I really liked the fact that women characters have been portrayed as strong and ruthless.

Spoiler

I really wanted Fly/Fox/Bai Ruoyao to be alive and well but not at the cost of Mu Huixue's life. God I love that woman so much, her death killed me. I miss you, Deer. Nevertheless, I find BRY really annoying and very adorable at the same time! He makes the story much more fun.

[collapse]

honestly, the story made me cry.

I highly recommend this novel. <<less

this novel is amazing and totally deserves all the 4-5 star reviews. I've never read something that really blew my mind as much as this novel did. The world building done by the author was simply incredible and I have no idea how they not only managed to come up with such complex games and puzzles, but also to use these games and puzzles to introduce characters and drive character development, all while tying them into the complicated plotline. There were so many moments when reading this novel where I... more>> just went O.O or got goosebumps after realising how the characters solved the game/something was revealed. The way this whole story unfolds is just, , , *chef's kiss*

not only was the plot and world building interesting, but the characters themselves were very 3d, which was something I greatly appreciated. There was no hero/saviour complex MC, nor was there a truly "evil" villain. This whole novel was written pretty realistically, with the characters being ones that are complex and very much human, existing across a greyscale instead of being fixed on the two sides of black and white. These characters will really stick with you throughout the novel and there isn't really any case of "oh I forgot that this person existed".

even though this novel isn't super focused on the romance, MC and ML's relationship is really cute. The way it develops and strengthens is also very realistic and believable, which is very heartwarming to see (even as we're being force fed dog food)

anyway, thanks so much to the author for writing such a brilliant novel. Also huge kudos to rainbow turtle for translating this. The translation quality is good and the translator also takes the time to explain some of the more complicated parts to us clueless readers^^

tldr: this novel is the embodiment of big brain energy. U may feel rlly dumb when reading this but I guarantee that the plot and characters will blow you away. <<less

I absolutely love this novel. I would give it a hundred stars if I could, since it is definitely the best BL novel I have ever read. There isn't that much fluff but the s*xual tension between the MC and ML is definitely there. The MC is probably the best MC, where they are not s*upid, but they are actually one of the most powerful and smart people in the novel, and he is not so much weaker than the ML like in other BL novels. I actually feel like... more>> my IQ rose after reading this novel, it is just the right combination of action, suspense, and romance, and I would recommend it to everyone even to non BL readers. The character development is slow and gradual not too abrupt and the MC grows stronger because of effort not some unfair cheat he gets. I had second doubts when I first started this novel but when I read it, I loved it. So if you are having second doubts, just read it, I assure you its not a waste of time. <<less

One of the best bl novels I've read and thats saying something since I'm very picky in my choices in novels.

Story plot put together very well, the games are logical and very smart. High IQ games ahahahaha.

MC and ML are the ideal power couple. Personalities are likable.

Horror survival type with bl element, so exactly up my lane. If anyone can give me recommendations on similar novels please do!

All in all worth a read!

Wow okay...

When I first started this novel, I had kinda hoped for a nice BL, with like, some action and survival aspects on the side. It wasn't that I hadn't read the 'psychological' and 'thriller' tags, I just kinda had hopes for adventure, sci-fi romance and found the vague description intriguing.

After reading through a fair bit, I went into shock. It had been a fair way in, and I guess it only really sunk in at a particular instance that it wasn't going to be a light and easy read.... more>>
Spoiler

The said instance was Mario's instance, in which thousands of people had died in. It was really scary knowing that good old mario wanted to trap everyone in the game forever and laid a trap that made it pretty damn inevitable. Way to ruin my childhood.

[collapse]

Maybe it was because of the psychological elements, but I felt it was bordering on horror. There had been signs along the way, but that was a definite red flag.

As someone who isn't a big fan of horror, violence or anything that could potentially give me nightmares, this was a big 'no'. I nearly stopped reading, but I ended up going back, and I'm so glad I did.

After I got accustomed to it, I found that it fit the novel really well, and there were some great action scenes and mysteries that made me unable to stop reading, or even made me question life. There were some really cool ideas and concepts in here, and for a slight fan of escapism, it was really well done in how this otherworldly situation was constructed.

While this wasn't my usual genre, it gave me something I never knew I needed, and it was incredibly good. I would 10/10 recommend, but just keep in mind that romance isn't really the main focus, and while the main ship is hella cute, it isn't exactly a light and fluffy kind of novel.

Edit: It now has the horror tag. <<less

I'm absolutely in love with this novel. I wish I could forget it all just to read all over again from the beginning as the first time.

The romance is believable. It's slow paced and discreet (except for this one time that I won't spoil) as its not the main focus. I would love an extra with the censored scenes hehehe.

There's comedy at the right dosis.

What I loved more is how the author linked everything and put a lot of references and logic. It's the opposite of a brainless story (that... more>> you find everywhere). The games are interesting and the solutions surprising.

I was worried about the ending because of the theme that is so easy to screw with, but worried for nothing. The ending was surprisingly satisfying. Except for the fact that the novel endend, of course.

Good novel and very interesting read. The plot is quite unique in a sense and it's one of the rare books where I can't guess what would happen due to the nature of the book's main theme - games. The games function as intellectual puzzles and are not as simple as they look so they're quite fun to read about.

Spoiler

Only slightly disappointed at the ending. I kinda wanted Mu Huixue to survive which she could've but instead, she sacrificed herself after realising that there was nothing in the world she'd miss.

[collapse]

There is some China bias in the book but not enough for me to call it Nationalism so it's quite alright. Although it seems like the author glossed over most countries except America, China and Europe.

The BL in the story is close to unnoticeable and really not in your face so even people that wouldn't read BL novels should pick this up imo. <<less

Most stories I read on here are BL but strangely enough I think what makes this particular story so interesting is that the BL aspect is not the main focus.

Exciting things happen w/o depending on romance drama. The ML is cool without being a super rich and famous CEO/actor. The MC is super lucky (like most mc's) but I like the way the author added some humor to it. Many times his lucky moments or gifts come with a downside! If your not sure yet, read a chapter or two... more>> it's a gem.

Tldr: BL with well thought out plot. Action packed. Smart characters. Not a lot of "pa pa pa" but not hella dry either. <<less

I started reading this novel coincidentally, having found there's enough chapter of it to start. I never really read the tags on the left of the page, before start reading the story, so it isn't until later that I found out this is a yaoi story. I think most people who reviewed this story are so far focused on the yaoi element, and there aren't a lot of them around, so they inflate their reviews of it, because I see lots of 5-star reviews. I'll do something different and review... more>> it from the viewpoint of someone not necessarily a fan of yaoi.

The set-up is simple: librarian was minding his own business when an alien entity throws the entire world into some kind of a game. One doesn't live in the game, but instead come in and out at certain intervals. It's very reminiscent of 'No Game, No Life, ' which I believe this thing is based on.

The sense of peril and suspense is upped, in this novel, since the MC doesn't face risks of death only in the game, but also in real life. And to make it more interesting, the dangers in game and in life are different. In the game, one loses one's life mostly by losing the game, which themselves are less action-y and more cerebral. In-game, the novel reads more like a puzzle-solving and riddles sort. In life, the problems are more action-like, such as being attacked, maimed or killed by other people.

I haven't read many novels in this genre, so I don't know how original the puzzles are, in this one, and there's also obviously things lost in translation, along the way, obviously. But for me, they're good enough. They're interesting enough, and although they sometimes feel contrived, trying to be cleverer than they actually are, there is enough smarts here to make you go, 'oh, yeah, should've thought of that, ' when the puzzle is revealed.

The chapters are long and content-filled. Action moves fast, and there isn't very much filler, so far. Up to ch. 58, it feels like I'm reading plenty of content, whereas with some novels, you could have read 300 chapters, and not feel like you've gone very far, at all.

So far, I haven't read anything overtly yaoi, in this novel. The MC has self-identified as being openly gay, and there is a love interest being put in front of us, but they haven't done anything that would otherwise make the story a yaoi story. It won't bother me if it becomes more overt in the story, but at this point, I think it may be more of a distraction from the plot itself, which is quite good. Maybe more than 'quite good, ' but not quite 'excellent, ' either.

I'll keep on reading, and if you're looking for an interesting read, I recommend this novel, even if you're not looking specifically for yaoi. It's worth reading. <<less

the black tower games. They are the best part of the plot because I like to read over the rules or clues carefully to guess the correct answer to win or find the stowaways. I almost got the answer in the library game and mole game right but I gave up figuring it out by Mario monopoly arc because I lost my patience to think and just skip ahead. When he not playing the death games he fighting other players in the world which is now basically your typical apocalyptic world running low on food and water, no laws killers running amok so far I have not seen any romance between the ML. The only reason I know he the ML is because the author keep teasing about it in her little theater

This is the best thing I’ve ever read, the slow-burn, the mind games, the flow, everything was perfect. Only thing I dislike is that the extra chapters weren’t long enough 😭😭😭. The amount of times I was physically blown away from the way Tang Mo solved the various games, leaving me reeling for days to the point I’ll actually start ranting to my friend about how GENIUS that was.

I’ve actually read all the books by this author and they never disappoint!!!

I cannot exaggerate how good the romance is in this novel, the characters dynamic is fun and healthy. There is a clear sense of mutual respect and thats always a green flag for me. The true pull though was the page flipping narrative. It's unrealistic yet fufilling in a sense. Sadistic wish fufillment because no one would want to be in the story but watching these guys succeed is so satifying. Big reccomendation from me. ORV if the author ('s) wasn't a coward and went from bromance to romance.

2nd SciFi danmei that I've completed after Little Mushroom and I gotta say that it didn't disappoint at all 😁 I loved reading every single chapter of it, especially with the premise being new to me. The plot was well thought out, and it just keeps you at your toes everytime the character's enter a game and makes you fear for your favorite character's life XD. I absolutely love this novel and I hope that many other's will love it too 😊 Happy reading to yall 💜 <<less

This novel... ughhh... it's overrated 😒

1. The romance... Awful. Look, most of the BLs I've read, have slow burn ok? That's not the issue. The problem is that the romance only makes 3% of the whole novel! They barely had any moments in the book! The novel has 245 chapters. I had to reach ch 205 to have the slightest confirmation that they were a couple!

2. The plot overall is fine. It's just that it gets overwhelming. I feel like many of the games were unnecessary and some of... more>> them were too detailed. At one point I got so sick of it that I just skimmed through the chapters so I could finish faster. And believe me, I could still understand what was going on.

The monsters were fine tho. I liked how they always mocked the players and called them greedy. Humans are greedy. That's actually the truth. My fav was Mosaic... I feel you girl, I also hate studying.... : (

3. Characters... Tang Mo... the MOST BORING MC I'VE EVER SEEN! He just annoyed me so much! He is weak! Don't believe what those 5 stars ratings say. He is. He depends on those powers of his too much. And the only reason he made it to the end is bcs of his protagonist aura. He admits countless times in the novel that he is no match for ML without his powers! Also, why does he, of all people, have to have the power of collecting other people's powers? This ability is unfair, no matter who has it. The other characters were fine with just one power but this dude had to have like 20+ of them

Throughout the whole novel, I only liked 5 characters. Bai Ruoyao, Mu Huixue, Fu Wendou (ML), Andrei and Ning Zheng. Bai Ruoyao was such an interesting character! And Mu Huixue was my girl! BUT!

Spoiler

First, Bai Ruoyao got killed. I was so angry. Then, Mu Huixue got killed to resurrect Bai Ruoyao. So my fav character revived only for my other fav character to die! What the hell??

[collapse]

Fu Wendou was a good ML. His powers were impressive! He is a nice guy. There's not much to say.

I also would like to add that you learn nothing about Tang Mo during those 245 chapters. Just that his parents died, he had 2 close friends before Earth came online and that he's a librarian. That's it. You even learn more about Fu Wendou, Bai Ruoyao, Mu Huixue and Andrei than you learn about Tang Mo, the MC!

There's also a teenage girl in there and her power is 'higher intelligence' or smth... which it didn't really seem like that to me. She is just as intelligent as ML (ML is very intelligent). So I guess you could say that it's 'higher intelligence for a teenager'... I just don't get how she survived until the end... she was the weakest from that bunch. In a survival game where you have to fight monsters most of the time, the one who can't fight at all, survives till the end.... make it make sense

There were things I liked abt this novel, some characters, some plot parts and some of the black tower monsters. But there were more things that annoyed me honestly. Did I waste my time with this book? Mostly yes. (let's say... 75% wasted time) Would I recommend it? No. But people would read it bcs of the high rating anyway <<less

Reading the reviews and especially the one starting with: "Read this book. Do yourself a favor, drop every other book for the moment and just immerse yourself in the literary masterpiece that is this novel."

-made me do just that. But boy oh boy it felt like a hard read.

Theres a lot of potential in the setting, but its very one dimensional and things that are so complicated you need to have 200 iq to figure out whats going on, get solved by the MC just like that. Meanwhile making no... more>> sense to the reader.

Also his power system is very flatlined, he can just get more powers and his body grows stronger, but there's no real laying out a proper path to power or power progression besides just "steal ability" "body stronger than before".

If the author put more effort into creating character growth/progression it'd be much more engaging as the way he deals with enigma-level problems is just unconvincing. <<less

So this isn't a bad kind of bad. It's fine. Which is the problem. It's neither good or amazing nor terrible. The premise is understandable, the characters are nice enough. The MC may show the problem with this novel the most: he is just bland. Lacks any real personality. It may help if you want to project a little bit of yourself into him and it may be your coup of tea. It wasn't for me, still I pushed through for 184 chapters bc there wasn't anything offensively bad and... more>> it was a good read before going to bed. But with the length of this webnovel just being enough is not... well, enough. With this length there should be something to hook you in. Here it's neither characters, not the plot or the romance. ML was nice enough, had some good humor while being the strong and silent type. Still it felt like he was trying to romance a cardboard box, not another human being. <<less

I see a lot of people saying its a great book but it was honestly so UNDERWHELMING. The concept was so good but the execution was not it and added with the 270+ chapters ? lts a no for me... Some problems I had with the book :

1. In my opinion the characters all just had no substance and were all so 2D e.g The MC and ML are all described as constantly being emotionless and cold which was fine at the start but as the story went on it... more>> was just annoying how they would never show their emotion and you could never tell what they were feeling, even though they were going out and being absolutely traumatized and
Spoiler

killing hundreds of people ?

[collapse]

2. The games actually made no sense at all - I mean they probably did but it was just so hard to understand and conceptualize that towards the end I just didn't bother even trying to understand the games which really takes you away from the story.

3. The romance..... okay I get it, its a slow burn book but them not even
Spoiler

kissing until around Chapter 217???

[collapse]
firstly its kinda cringe secondly they met online in a game and LITERALLY NEVER SAW OR TALKED TO EACH OTHER??? like how did u even fall in love in the first place 😭

4. THE SHEER AMOUNT OF CHAPTERS - the book definitely could have been cut in half. Towards the middle of it was just the MC constantly being dragged into games that I barely understood and I was just wondering where the plot was leading since there didn't actually seem like there was any bc it was just games, games, games

5. The ending was underwhelming after 270 chapters of build up but thinking about it, it was probably the best ending we could have gotten.

6. Probably a lot more other minute things... I don't actually hate the book it was just so underwhelming to read and I was STRUGGLING to finish it after I got past Chapter 180 but I pushed through it and finished yay?!! <<less

started reading: December 5th, 2022.

I binge-read 220 chapters in like 4 days, (I'm having a break currently.), and it's actually what brought me back into novels. I had been a big wattpad stories fan in 2021 but then got out of that phase and began to lose motivation once I started reading more manga/manhwa/manhuas. But everyone on my social media platforms kept telling me to read it and that it was a masterpiece, so naturally, on one boring ass day I decided to start it. After reading about 1-2... more>> chapters I was beginning to lose interest bc I wasn't used to having to pay attention to the words and not like how I sometimes just looked at the art during webcomics. But thankfully I forced myself to read more and eventually got very interested at around chapter 4. After getting into around 10 chapters I began tossing and turning in my bed and occasionally throwing my phone across the room, and screaming into my pillow out of excitement. I absolutely love the "I was forced into a life-and-death survival games" type of trope. After reading orv and the trial games of life + others I was so interested in how the plot was going to fold out.

Getting to chapter 20 I was thinking "there's no way this novel is that good." and that it would probably have some random ass arc later that would ruin the plot, but even at chapter 220 everything was perfect.

The plot: Perfect

The writing: Perfect

The characters: Perfect

The romance: Perfect

The so-called "Tower Attack Games" and "Instances": Perfect.

If you have a picky-ass friend That only reads the best novels. Recommend this, even if they aren't into reading LGBT romance, make them read it!!!

If I had to say 1 thing I didn't necessarily like about the novel, I would say the devils tango chapter ykyk.

And here's why:

Although I don't usually give a sh*t about s*x in any romance novel, The chapter MC and ML "did it" was kinda, of disappointing..??

it kinda went like

*pushed onto the bed and starts kissing*

and then the next sentence said something like/indicating that it was over and they had somehow done it.

I usually don't give a fck if the s*x scene is short but in this novel, I was kinda disappointed.
Spoiler

Only because all the way from when the MC and ML met on the game bridge, to their first meeting irl, That one time the MC used one of his abilitys that needed him to touch ML intimately to see what his ability was, and all the games and sh*t they went through, to then the "clock of truth" telling them that to steal mls ability MC had to do it with him, carried so much sexual/romantic tension that I assumed when they did it all the tension the readers were feeling would be wrapped up. But as I said earlier the way it was written was like any other common sentence in the novel. Like "MC silently shut the door, hopped into bed, and fell asleep." felt exactly like the s*x scene. It was so brief and casual. It took me a second to realize and made me blurt out "THEY FINALLY DID IT??" which made me reread the chapter just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating LOL.

[collapse]

But I honestly didn't mind that much about the devil's tango chapter bc the plot and story were already enough for me to be interested.

Overall a very great read, that brought me back into web novels :) <<less

To be honest I really liked this novel! I can agree that the complicity of it gets a bit boring and you just wanna skip over but trust me you don’t miss much. Sure the games are interesting and may give some big plot points but it’s usually what comes after!
Pro tip about reading this novel! if you don’t like the current translation you can go to the way back machine and find the old translator. Their website probably was shut down but you can definitely find their page on way back machine and read ALL chapters there. It is also MTL but I personally think it was cleaned up nicely. (There are still typos and like 3 chapters in a row the word dice was written as die but you don’t have to wait for updates so there’s that!!)

if you’re wondering about romance, it is slow... like they kinda get somewhere in the 150+ chapters. Not that you feel disappointed that it isn’t sooner, because it feels normal that the progress is slow. It’s kinda weird, the pacing of this is pretty good so you don’t fret over the slow burn. Although there is a cliche like “we get somewhere but get interrupted before we get anywhere”.

Some said how MC is too op or just over the top with his smartness but to me it isn’t true. First of all, his ability is op but clearly he has major restrictions and the props he gets are the ones he gets fairly. And as black tower said
