Six months ago, tens of thousands of black phantom towers appeared all over the world, floating above the cities. Chemists, physicists, religious people… all of them could do nothing.

Six months later, people became used to the towers and no longer paid them attention.

One day, Tang Mo saw a flying insect crash into it instead of going through it. The next day, a sharp and clear child-like voice issued an announcement to all humans.

“Ding dong! November 15th, 2017. The earth is online.”

The black tower’s three iron-clad rules:

1. Everything is explained by the black tower.

2. 6 o’clock to 18 o’clock is the game time.

3. All players, please strive to attack the tower.

TLDR: A really great story which stands out amongst others in the apocalyptic survival and puzzle mysteries genre. It is not so much centred on the two male leads relationship as it is about their means to survive this new world full of challenges from the tower as well as other humans. The engagement readers have through the events and games of the novel generates a sense of realism, where you feel as if you're in the world of the novel yourself, trying to survive against all odds. 5/5 would... more>> recommend.

In terms of plot, the whole world is thrown into, what is, a despairing situation which calls for the mass population to exercise their wits and smarts in order to survive the tower's game. I think the author's approach to this genre is pretty unique, with mini arcs within bigger arcs of the story. I can tell the author planned this story out ahead, because hints to future events are tied in seamlessly through the smallest of details in the early chapters.

In terms of the game/mysteries in the novel, by no means did they have 'easy solutions'. This really depends on the person, but I personally think the author does a great job of engaging with the readers by presenting the rules of the game like the characters have as it gives readers the challenge of figuring whether they have the ability to solve the game themselves and survive the tower. Sometimes the solution is right in front, but other times it right outside of the box. However, that being said, the events of the game and the solution itself can get windy and long and I sometimes just scrolled through and skimmed through the details, so this may not be every reader's cup of tea.

In terms of the main character, there wasn't so much development because in my opinion, the author has already fleshed out the MC's character –or rather, the tower and the overall apocalypse hasn't changed the MC much, but has only served to reveal/accentuate the person he already is.

In terms of other characters, the author did a great job because every character that's introduced serves a purpose in the overall narrative. The MC meets many people along the novel; some die and few survive, but the author never really lets you forget the ones which have impact on the progress of the MC as a person and the events of the novel.

In terms of the relationship, I don't think the fact that this is danmei should stop anyone from reading or forming their own bias. It is honestly such a great read, and like previously mentioned this is not so much about finding love in the apocalypse than it is surviving it. I love the slow and gradual development of their relationship –which I think reflects accurately regarding the situation they're in. However, I was really drawn to the deep understanding the two have of each other, even before meeting, like the two are really just fated to be together. <<less

Wow I just... now that I’ve finished this journey — that’s what this story was, a beautiful, heart rending journey — I feel like I’m at such a loss. This novel is absolutely incredible. It’s smart, creative, funny, but very deep and profound. It touches upon what it means to be human, the resiliency of humanity, and explores the struggles of the human condition at our best and worst through analogy of the black tower games. We see the best and worst out of humanity in this story and I... more>> feel like it raises many issues that I would love to further discuss and explore. The characters are all so complex and loveable. At the end, I felt so torn. It was so happy but also quite bitter sweet. The future was paved with blood and heart-break.

Spoiler

I was so sad when Bai Ruiyao died but the fact that he was revived at the expense of Mu Huixue’s life leaves me torn. The extra in which the world never went online made me feel complicated. It was sweet and happy but because of the peace, my fave characters never had a chance to intersect the way they did in the main story. This story really is about making the best of what life deals to you.

[collapse]

The relationship between the leads is amazing. There’s so much love and trust but it’s underplayed. It’s a natural and equal partnership that you don’t see often in danmei. This was different, thought-provoking, but endlessly fascinating. I loved this story so much and am so thankful to the author and translator. I would definitely recommend and read again. <<less

This novel is really one of the gems out there. For those put off by the BL tag, this is not romance-centric. That is one of the things, I love about this novel. The romantic subplot does not overtake the overall plot. It is slow burn but, I find it really realistic. In a sort of apocalyptic world where they could die anytime, they prioritise surviving first.

The world building is definitely well done. The characterisation I'd say is great, considering other novels. The MC has a unique ability but is... more>> not a Gary Stu and not overpowered. Abilities have limitations which was wonderfully executed in the novel.

The logic of the games they play is definitely engaging and unconventional.

Judging the book in a apocalyptic/mystery/fantasy, it is really well executed. The ending was satisfying and leaves the reader feeling content and hopeful.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to solve puzzles and clues. <<less

Very well written. Kudos to the author. Decently translated. Kudos to the translator (s) for saving my brain from mtl-ing this novel. This is an apocalyptic story that doesn't involve zombies but harsh games that tests the mettle of humankind. Each game is brilliantly done (or maybe I'm just not that clever ?) often with twist that one doesn't see coming. This novel is a censored BL (booo!) towards the end of the story but what I like is that it isn't a BL with thriller aspects, but a thriller... more>> that just happen to have protagonists that are gay. I also like the dual strength/weakness of Tang Mo. He has a somewhat

that makes Tang Mo a formidable fighter and player, but at the same time, supress his ability and Tang Mo is just a little-harder-to-kill librarian. Add in homicidal fairytale characters, an almost psychotic Tang Mo stalker, and magical props, and this ends up being a story unlike any others. I really recommend this novel. <<less

Upset that once I've caught up it's almost over because this is truly too good to let go. Relationship between MC and ML is very genuine and shown, not told, through their actions and implicit trust and understanding. Still takes a backseat to overall plot and mystery, which I appreciate.

Unfortunately am unsure of how well this will read through the second time after I know all of the games and mystery's answers. I feel like a lot of the driving force of this novel is the suspense and thrill of... more>> chasing the unknown, chapter by chapter. Still a great read <<less

Anyway, I recommend this to anyone who loves survival and mystery novels. The games the black tower forces the players to play are mind blowing. There are so many instances where I just ended up bowing down at the sheer ingenious of the solutions the MC finds. The romance is subtle and 3/4 of the time whilst reading this, I keep forgetting that this is a BL novel and not shounen/stallion. Because usually in Yaoi novels, the MC would be surrounded by pretty boy teammates and female antagonists. But in this amazing novel, it gives us readers variety - Different characters of both genders; so complicated and strong in personalities you just become obsessed with them. Sure, some of them are frustrating, but I ended up falling in love with one off the most annoying fly in the series (shocker).

Spoiler

Why did he have to die? T_T... Baby-faced Bai~!!!!

[collapse]

Funny enough, all the dangerous NPCs are pretty loveable and adorable (to me, at least. The players are all scared of them hahahahaha). The MC even gets along (in the loosest term) with a few of them via bulliying them shamelessly (in my opinion anyway). Hahahahaha!

Spoiler

I love the interactions between MC and Mosiac. They're hilarious! AND the many times MC makes the NPCs speechelsss because he's so shameless is so funny!

[collapse]

Just... give this novel a try. Awesome characters. Brilliant storyline. Thrilling and not boring at all. What more could you ask for? This novel is a f*cking gem! <<less

Kyaaa~ I've been reading this novel months ago and stopped to stock up chapter. When I come back it's already 1++

  1. If you are bored with wimpy MC, you should give this a try. Uniquely the MC and ML are equal to each other. No one is more overpower since they have their own trump card. I love how their mind are in sync. And their conversation are full of wits

It’s absolute great/a solid story with a pinch of a fresh concept. You definitely won’t feel bored or disconnected with the novel and it’s pacing as long as this type of survival based genre is something you like or willing to give it a shot (which is definitely recommended by the way).

MC, ML and other side characters are definitely worth noticing (doesn’t matter under which category they fall according to your opinion).
However I do have some regrets yet the biggest one is that disgusting Bai guy (baby face youth) resurrection part. Many delulu might find that crazy piece of sh*t their kindaaa thing to solve their solulu but not me. I really wanted him dead since the moment he appeared and it also shows the power this author had on my emotions as a-reader to create such a vile character that rubbed me the wrong way continuously.

What would you do if black towers suddenly spawned around the world and told you to attack its levels or die? What about when everyone gets abilities and yours is a book that bullies you? And then you connect with this guy who's suspiciously like your crush you play bridge with over an egg?

This is many people's introduction to the infinite/unlimited flow genre and for good reason. (If you read Infinite Flow, but haven't read this yet, what are you doing?) It has great action scenes as well as some... more>> comedy

The MC has a hat that, if he bangs his head against something, he'll get an item. And yes, his abilities book does bully him often

It does however have very little romance, it's mostly a subplot so if you're looking for something with more romance I don't recommend it. That being said, if you dislike romance this might be right up your alley.

I've seen TEIO being compared to ORV before and that's not exactly accurate. They're two very different series (teio was even serialized first) but I could see how some people might get the same vibes due to the scenarios. <<less

4.4 *sigh...* I agre with someone who said this novel is suitable for someone who want to try read yaoi, bcs the yaoi spice is just.. 10% they became yaoi is just like a shadow we know both of them secretly liked each other, then they confess they always together try to support and protect another, go to bed, stay alive and that's it, actually the ''game'' part and solving mystery is the most entertaining in this novel development, the way that author write and build every character is good..... more>> that's why I give it 4.4 <<less

It's an enjoyable book. I highly recommend it. It's one of those stories that will have a high reach, because the genres are well mixed into it that gives me a feeling that I'm actually reading each genre in the story. Normally, most stories only show one genre successfully as the main genre and an odd one sub-genre that's translated well. But this story gives a more fuller feeling like there are two well made genre's incorporated. Did that make sense? Anyway that's how I feel

This is one of my best unlimited flow novels. The writing was spectacular and instantly got u hooked and the world building and characters where just 😍.

The romance was nice and realistic enough and honestly I loved their relationship dynamic with both of them being equally strong and just being equals in the relationship. Not many novels have that since the ML usually are the dominant ones in the relationship which sometimes throws me off.

The tower bosses where just my favorite as they gave me a different outlook on characters... more>> we all know and love.

In all I recommend u give this novel a try and see if u might like it. <<less

I read this story non-stop every minute I had. Lost sleep over it. Overall, I would heavily recommend it. Coming across this web novel was like diving into a heap of tr*sh and finding nice, polished copper. For a Chinese web novel, this was a 5/5. I am not expecting Pulitzer winning fiction here.

PROS

Although there were more male characters than female, women were complex in this story. There were still underlying hints of misogyny, but I had already factored that into my expectations given the toxically patriarchal nature of Chinese... more>> culture. There are 3-5 important recurring female characters that align with MC and I think the author did them justice. 3 of them were smart and independent-minded, and the other 2 were competent in their own light (though a bit shafted by the MLs' halo). Of all of them, I would say Deer (her codename) was the most fleshed out. In fact she felt more human than the MC, and I wanted to read more about her and almost wished she were the MC instead. I mean, imagine if...

Spoiler

Imagine if new MC was Deer and ML was the Russian dude who lost his wife and daughter. Their dynamic is so much more poignant. I mean, one is a mildly suicidal OP woman whose psychic powers prevent her from getting killed, and the other is a OP man who traveled halfway across the world seeking to kill her to resurrect his dead daughter.

(my head canon here on out:) Through their interactions they learn to heal on their own and find new meanings in life. She in the end martyrs herself by his hand to resurrect BYN so humanity has a chance for survival. He learns to accept the finality of his daughter's, wife's, and now Deer's deaths, and lives out the rest of his days quietly, always remembering them.

She makes a much more compelling main character, tbh.

Their background story speaks to me so much more than real MC x real ML. Things may have been different if real MC had a personality beyond "survival" and being embarrassed/annoyed by his psychic powers. Typical military-background ML was somehow mildly more interesting than MC in that department.

But it's fine since I didn't read the story for romance.

[collapse]

The different situations that the protagonists had to resolve were actually pretty interesting. If you like mystery, puzzle-solving, and detective novels, then you might find this web novel amusing. I will say though, while a lot of the puzzles were surprisingly decent, the games often fall into the trope of "forced mystery" in that a lot of the details needed for readers to reach a conclusion is hidden until the arc's late stage. So, we readers do not discover the clues in real time and cannot solve the puzzles alongside the protagonists. I did pause to try to figure out a few myself, but just treated vast majority as a light read and skimmed through things. And the novel is good for that.

The special powers and magical items in this story were actually fun to read about and appropriately used. It was rarely a giant wall of text (cough cough u know what I'm talking about).

Riddled with references to fairytales. If you like sinister/mildly offensive re-imaginations of classic Western fairytale and pop culture characters then you will find this enjoyable.

CONS

Translation. Thankfully I can read simplified Chinese to some degree. Otherwise this story might've been a bit more confusing due to bad MTL translations with minimal editing. Genders would be frequently confused, entire lines left out of the story at the end. But I just read a translation off a random site. Maybe the ones linked here are better. Maybe not.

Not focused on romance. This could be a pro or a con depending on what you are looking for. While MC x ML is canonical and sprinkled here and there, the story rarely dives into it beyond companionship and "wow they are great at teamwork." Explicitly romantic physical intimacy is described 3-5 times (?) in 230+ chapters, and only briefly. I didn't care much since I read this for the puzzle-solving, but by the end even I was like, "come on author, surely you can give us more than that?"

There are minor plot holes, continuity errors, and skimmed over details that would have fleshed out the specific arcs better. A couple of the game mechanisms (i.e. the school tutoring, food chain, or truth clock 1) were tedious to read and felt unsuited for a novel. But vast majority were interesting.

Some moments feel like all the other characters are dumbed down to make the MC shine. And some of the "light bulb moments" either feel unearned or exaggerated. My reaction at times was either "you cannot just conclude that given the provided evidence! there are so many other possibilities to consider??" or "duh, that's so obvious, it doesn't warrant praise about how smart xyz is." But honestly, the author had to be pretty dedicated to write out all these scenarios, even if they are altered versions of common games out there. So, props. <<less

So this is about suddenly going into a survival game with all humanity as its players. This had a nice storyline, although sometimes it was hard to follow the logic and rules of the games.

At some points, it did seem like it was dragged, but in most long books/series I find this issue so it's not such a big a deal.

It has romance, but its shounen ai and not yaoi as there is nothing explicit shown in the chapters for anyone expecting this.

Its not an amazing read for me, but... more>> not bad or meh either. <<less

An absolutely amazing book. It will keep you hooked till the end. At times your heart will beat so fast, not because of some lovey-dovey scene but rather from the fear that what'll happen to the MC next (even if you already know that he is the protagonist and has the protagonist halo, so he won't die).

The concept or setting of the novel is absolutely different which is refreshing. It is on the struggle that the entire human civilization have to face to continue living due to some strange apperance... more>> of the Black towers. The whole novel has different small or big game instances which are really interesting and will for sure keep you on your toes. In it, people will come and go, many will be dead and some will stay till the end but still the survivors have to continue living, for which they have to fight till there is last drop of blood left.

The BL (mature or intimacy) content in it is not that much, like few kissing and all. But! The understanding and how the relationship between the two had progressed, even during the times of danger, was really beautifully written.

The character traits of each and every character (protagonists, antagonists, support characters, and others) was well-written and distinct which gave the story a life in itself.

Overall it was worth my time. 💯 <<less
