The Devoted Second Male Lead Decided to Favor Someone Else

Description

Lu Shijin transmigrated into a strange world and was bound to a ‘Devoted Side Male Lead’ system. The system required him to wholeheartedly play the role of a side male lead, to selflessly dedicate himself to the main character and to advance the plot development. He would only be able to return to the real world when the audience’s enjoyment exceeds 100%.

Lu Shijin, who had accumulated enough pent-up frustration in real life, sneered.

What real world? Isn’t it better to be a flirtatious bit*h who only lives for himself?

So, Lu Shijin—

– Helped his villain uncle and the scum fight for family property in a dog-blood story.

– Became both the villain and the white moonlight in an interstellar science fiction story.

– Spent every day being gay with the idol in an inspirational idol drama story.

– Caused the king of the mermaids to come ashore to pursue him in a science fiction fairy tale.

– Became the ‘cannon fodder’ and counterattacked in a modern workplace story.

– Stole the honoured consort from the emperor who already had an entire harem in a palace scheming story.

– Created a two-way redemption for the devoted side male lead and school tyrant in a modern love story.

– Was coveted as a furnace by the elder of the emotionless path in a cruel xianxia story.

– Became a bride to give luck to a vegetative person in a modern business story.

– Relied on papapa to save the world in a suspenseful adventure story.

……

Lu Shijin threw away his holy saint halo and went straight to being OOC. He hadn’t expected that the audience would like his persona breaking that much.

The audience watched as the plot broke free like a wild horse and became all over the place, their smiles gradually becoming twisted: This plot is great! I love it! Our Jinjin is still young, so you have to discipline him properly!

What I expected: a fun lighthearted cliched novel.

I was right only about one of those things (guess which).

I've read the first arc and started the second one, but I don't want to torture myself and dropping it.

... more>> MC has a cliched personality: smart, self-serving, ruthless. I like this type of character, and in another type of novel I would've had a lot of fun reading about him.

The plot is straightforward, cliched, and not very fun: there are no difficulties for MC to overcome, a smooth ride from start to finish.

The main problem for me is the ML: he is awful. He is your usual cliche of possessive, paranoid CEO. He and MC have no chemistry. Like, none. In the beginning, they hooked up because MC wanted a backer (he literally drugged ML so he would have s*x with him. Yes, he r*ped ML). ML had a convenient body to f*ck and not just any body - ML has some issues about MC's ex - the Scum from the description - and the idea that he "stole" a lover (like a possession) from him is very appealing for him. So, they have s*x. Lots and lots of s*x, even when MC is not willing. It is a very "fun" mix of ML starting to f*ck a willing MC and not stopping way past the time when MC wanted him to stop and starting to f*ck MC when he explicitly said, "no, I don't want to have s*x now". The author is very proud of this since it is brought up constantly.

Their relationship is also toxic af. They are jealous of each other and often try to make the other jealous. ML is always "testing" MC who he loves more, him or the Scum. There was a scene near the end of the novel where he humiliated MC in front of the Scum. When later MC asked what that was about, he was like "I wanted to show that the Scum does not love you, he didn't speak up for you, so you should have no ideas about him".

And this type of relationship is played like it is true love. Like, MC was legit sad that he has to leave ML and go to the next world.

And from the point of the whole idea of the arc it does not make any sense. Every arc is like a movie, which the audience watches. The audience follows only the protagonists of the movie and MC and ML are side characters, so their interactions are unseen by the audience. So from the point of the audience, the first arc is like this:

Spoiler

They follow the relationship of 2 characters, in the climax a side character (played by MC) appears on the scene, tells one of the movie protagonists (the Scum) that he outsmarted them all, a flashback on the interactions between MC and ML is shown, then it is revealed that the other movie protagonist is a mu*derer. The end.

[collapse]

And the audience collectively lost their sh*t over how cool the plot is. I don't know about you, but I would've called it bad writing and relying on the shock value of the final twist that came out of nowhere.

Also, for some reason by the end of the arc the Scum is in love with MC. No, really, he out of blue declared that he is in love with MC. For no reason, since they didn't have many interactions.

I was going to read the second arc before making a judgment, but it was SO ILLOGICAL that I had to jump the ship.

Spoiler

The next arc starts with MC in some sort of dungeon. An imposing person is looming above him and the system is not responding (how. Convenient.). MC panics and kills this man with his weapon. See the problem? MC, who is a prisoner, has a weapon readily available for him. How. Convenient.

So, this is an ABO novel, MC is an Omega and the person who he killed is a villain. MC was given a second body to play a second role by a system. He can switch his consciousness between bodies at will. Omega!MC was drugged by the villain and has to be given to another prisoner to f*ck (Villain controls the Omega, Omega is bonded with Alpha prisoner => Villain controls Alpha prisoner). So, Villain!MC brings the Omega body to the Alpha prisoner, makes a speech, and leaves. Then he watches how Alpha is about to f*ck his drugged up to the eyeballs Omega body. But le gasp! This Alpha prisoner has the same mark as ML from the prev. Arc! So MC switches back into his Omega body, feels the effect of drugs, is unable to think clearly, and is r*ped by ML. Why did he do this? He wanted to look at this mark up close but forgot that this Omega body is drugged. He. Forgot. While. Looking. Straight. At. It. HOW CONVENIENT.

[collapse]

In conclusion: Not, fun, not cute. Cliched characterization and a cliched plot that bends over backwards to suit the authors' needs. Not recommended to anyone. <<less

It baffles me how the author shamelessly takes r*pe, dub/non-con, and proper respectful relationships so unseriously. MC continuously expresses to ML multiple times in the first Arc that he doesn't want to do it with him, but "screw that!" Says ML and keeps touching, groping, harassing MC on the trip (that, keep in mind they planned TOGETHER on PURPOSE to find blackmail for the OG protagonist). So basically, ML kept ruining THEIR plans because oh no, ML has sad backstory on why he acts like that. Said backstory isn't even that well executed and just feels like a sad excuse for his actions.

(I'd like to also mention in chapter 30.2 ML and ML's mother (the empress) had a conversation abt the truth of his father's real death, and... more>> when she mentioned that she was forced to be bonded with his father, that she didn't want to marry him in the first place, and to her ML's father was just a rapist, ML LITERALLY just answers her "I don't remember father treating you badly". As if he didn't care about the empress' side of the story and believe that she was in the wrong. Ik that she was part of his father's mu*der, but he should also listen to her POV in the situation.) P.s. if ML does something remotely redeemable just ignore this

Like bro, this is story is supposed to be a romance, you can't make a romance story if the f*cking MC & ML don't even have a 🤏 amount compatibility with each other.

Seriously tho, I'm still confused how f*ck the MC and ML fell in love with eachother.

That aside, I do think this had a lot of potential. The world building and the MC was pretty cliché but decent, not rlly well layered but fine. The other characters and backstories though, feel so bland. Fr the Protags in the first and second arc is basically just a copy paste of the last with only his occupation changing.

Future Edit: So I've read until the Mermaid Arc so far.... it's not as bad as I hoped it would? The OG Protags as the story goes do get better and have better backstories unlike the first and second arc who left rlly bad impressions, So I expected the other Arcs to be just as bad, and don't get me wrong their still not good, but it's at least better than the first two in terms of it's characters and world settings. Like dude, I love some of the concepts in these Arcs. I re-rate this a 3.5/5. <<less

I have read it and will recommend. Each arc is interesting enough to be their own novels. The fact that each arc got a different goal for the MC and the ML also got different systems is kind of cool. I love how the MC somehow has to work out what the ML's system is and work around his own systems goals to get together with his ML.

This is a pretty entertaining novel, if you ignore the loopholes that is. 😉 Variety: I liked how this novel, despite having clichéd settings similar to other novels, brought variety into the plots. This is probably one of the QTs that have a very good variety of worlds. It also has a livestream function which I found interesting.

System: the system isn't OP but neither is it completely useless. It has an interesting dynamics with the MC.
Spoiler

it takes human form and goes to the last challenge world to help the MC

[collapse]

ML's missions: like many other QTs, the ML here doesn't remember the MC or the worlds they survived. What I did like was that
Spoiler

they give different types of missions to the ML in every world. And his system is a flawed one but that brings more twists into the plot itself.

[collapse]

MC & ML: the protagonists are smart, but flawed. To be honest, even after reading the whole novel in MTL, I can't figure out the exact character of the ML. He is possessive, and there are certain parts where I could see dubcon or even noncon but I've seen worse in many other QTs. Is their relationship the most healthy one? Probably not. But you have to remember that despite the freedom MC had regarding his actions, he could not become completely OOC.
Spoiler

ML had no memory and sometimes had to do shitty things because his mission demanded it. In one arc his mission was literally to be jealous of EVERYTHING & EVERYONE!

[collapse]
But I agree that the MC & ML had communication and trust issues which could have been solved in a better manner. This is where I agree with QWEX. Some parts of the novel had poor writing and loopholes. The live-streaming function, for example, was very confusing at times. Like, what rules are being followed to maintain positive reviews from the audience? Who ARE the audience members and what is the purpose of the live-stream? This part seemed pretty unclear. The ending was also a bit of a let-down.

BUT, it does cater to some extreme kinks like
Spoiler

NTR or exhibitionism. (MC and ML cheating on others for the sake of the mission, not cheating each other).

[collapse]
So, that was new! 🙈🙈🙈😅😅😅 Tl;dr: not the best, but good enough for a light reading.

honestly I'm picky when it comes to reading a BL QT like this, so I got excitedly find a mtl-ed of this.

it's fun at first I admit, but halfway through reading it got so annoying that I plan on dropping it but it keep me up all night so I ended up continuing it.

the MC is letting the ML bully him like what are you? A masochist? Didn't he know how to

Spoiler

there's even near the end arc that ML humiliated the MC

[collapse]

i hate the ml, too possessive. I mean I read alot of possessive mls it's just that this time it's too much that I cant bare to read it to MC just to 'test' him

they're toxic. They trust that they'll meet again under some circumstances but they don't trust e/o when they're in the world, they feel the need to watch e/o 24/7 just to make sure the others don't sleep with somebody

the ML is SCUM! MC is easy too bully despite him saying otherwise

Spoiler

in the ABO second world he killed the main villain, how? It's because he was already holding something despite his system being late, too convenient.

the MC in his previous og world is a reporter but he already have no qualms in killing someone in his second world like what???

[collapse]

i got tired reading this shit, I ain't gonna continue it. 3/10 never again. <<less

I do think this QT is above average, but some arcs were a bit meh and didn't really feel like arcs. The audience enjoyment rating doesn't actually play a big role and is sort of hand-waved away later. MC and ML also have some problematic behaviors (and communication issues) that can be frustrating, but that is somewhat expected for dog-blood plots. Also no side stories or epilogue, just the main text. I would rate this a 3.5

I loved the story.

It's soo soo good. 😭 I'm not a big fan of QTs but this one won my heart. The couple are so good and amazing. The character built, storyline, there growth and development, everything is just amazing.

I cried when I finally finished reading this one. I was so happy with the story and fluff that I might die from all the palpation.

I'll definitely recommend reading it. Give it a try, it's an amazing novel.

Thankyou Author sama for this amazing novel. And thank-you Translation-Sama for picking up this book.

I don't really know what to say. This novel is definitely not among the best quick wear/world hopping novels I have ever read.

While reading this it often felt like I was a donkey with a carrot dangling in front of me. Everytime the end of an arc approached I tried to catch the carrot, but was disappointed with a semi-open ending. It left me with an itch unscratched. And the unscratched itches increased with each open/semi-open ending.

There were also a few plot holes that I can't recall right now... more>> thanks to my limited brain capacity. To be honest, I have basically forgotten almost all the arc plots except for the last one (oh, and the apocalypse one) despite having just finished reading five minutes ago. This is also why I can't really go into detail in my review.

The last arc is a bit more memorable because I did not expect the horror survival game development. When that one finished, I was expecting another smaller real life arc, but was disappointed yet again.
Spoiler

The MC actually slept through all the potential drama and the ML finished everything already. So that was a bit anticlimactic for me.

[collapse]

I did not particularly like or dislike the main CP. It was a combination of a shameless, my pace shou x always changing ML. Unfortunately, I didn't really get attached to either of them so there are no plus points for characterization which I usually give when I really like a character. <<less

ending falls a bit flat, but otherwise it's good imo. totally feel-good story, some of the plot twists came out of nowhere and can't help but make you laugh in disbelief. relatively decent read if you want a light-hearted quick transmigration story.

It is average, but what I love about this novel is that there is no harem except for the second to the last arc which can't be considered harem. Anyway, it was a great read especially if you want to enjoy romance. Give this novel a chance to read. Just enjoy the novel.

So, I've managed to read through all the currently translated chapters, and while it was mildly entertaining. I have read better stories of this genre. The MC is pretty amusing, in the fact that he didn't just immediately follow the directive of the system and in fact managed to get a leash perse on the system by threatening his own life. Though this doesn't really last long enough for me, their "well we're stuck with each other so we should make the best of it and be friendly" that they... more>> are by the third arc is funny as well. The ML... is meh. I've seen better but he serves his purpose. Currently, out of all three arcs, I like him best in the Idol Arc. In fact, if I'm being completely honest, that arc is the only one where the two of them had any true chemistry so far.

I will say, that the fact we kind of just are thrown into the next arcs and there is no resolution of those previous worlds that we can see is kind of lame. Like the first one for example. What happened after the MC left? Did the original goods wake up and have to deal with the consequences of the MC's actions or did the world just cease to exist? What was the aftermath of the plagiarism case? What happened with Huo Qi and his father? Did Huo Lian have to live the rest of his life with everything he had ever wanted, except for the one who managed to catch not only his attention but heart or did he simultaneously cease to exist as well?

I didn't care too much about the second arc tbh, but I would've liked to see what ended up happening after the MC completed his mission and moved on.

I get that the writer probably just didn't want to think about it too much, but I really feel like we should've gotten something after having to read through the entire arc.

So, I have two different scores.

For the translation: a solid 5 (the translation is clean and I didn't need to struggle through reading it)

For the story itself: a solid 3 (the story is mid in comparison to others, but has it's funny moments so it gets that extra star and pushes it up from the 2 I want to give it)

So I guess I'll give this story overall a 4 out of 5. The translation carries almost all the weight of this. <<less
