This story is great. While following a few tropes, it does a good job of creating an interesting world. The translation quality is very good, and there are frequent updates. If thing keep going like this I can see this series getting very popular.

The premise of this novel is quite good, but is too boring. The pace is so slow, with endless battles on the first 50 chapters but little progresion of the story. The same joke about not being a girl is repetitive and anoying. Anyway if you have all the patience in the world, try to see it through to the end, but I can tell you that if you skip 20 chapters and read ahead you wouldn't feel like you missed anything. I gave it 3 stars because each chapter... more>> alone is good and the story is good, just too long, 137 chapters feel like I am starting a 5000 chapters (ongoing) novel. Good luck. <<less

Got trick this novel is a Gender Bender (Man with a body of woman or vice versa) I don't hate it but I also don't like reading it imagine a force yuri or yaoi it's annoying...

What I dislike about it is

Spoiler

The MC is thick head who had yet to realize that he was force to have a body of woman (I read review I think later he will obtain a man's body but to lazy to read it) he always mention his *d*ck and his feminine hormones that attract and made others crazy, The annoying part is most (I think all) of his follower was attracted to her because of his female heroic aura as for his ability to lead it's ZERO! cheat like ability? No idea if he has one!

Another part that annoy me is a partial mentioned of the other party which was the cause of MC's second death. Other's might blame MC for his 2nd death but I think the one to blame is the other party who disregard the feeling of an 8th year old kid and praise another kid to sky high. Even if you are an Adult imagine your family praising someone in front of your face slapping you with words showing you that his achievements are very impossible for you, I think walking out or going somewhere is natural reaction especially if the person has an inferiority complex (which is obvious that the MC has) I hate people looking down on them, YES inferiority complex exist and some have severe problems and it's normal in our current society.

Last is the progress of MC's evolution I know he will arrive at the finish line because of plot armor but just imagin RE:Monster with slice of life approach (will drop it on spot) no offense but I am already bored reading RE:monster with it's diary like chapter what's more this novel who would take forever for the MC to even reach LEVEL 2

Forgive me of my rant but this novel is not really for me so might as well drop it <<less

While it could be repetitive at times, and some people were upset the MC is a bit of a dunce. They expect too much from someone not specifically trained to operate, let alone succeed in the positions he finds himself in. So some of the forgetfulness or bad tactics are more realistic then him becoming a military master strategist, which many haters wanted.

So its an enjoyable ride, that I am happy is being translated.

This was... okay. First arc where he is a human feels more like a prologue, and was fairly well done at establishing the main character's personality albeit including a bit too much exposition for world-building. Second arc in the first level of the world of demons was unique and interesting, but in what could be considered the third arc, ... more>>

, the story has started to slowly backslide into a repetitive, slow-moving mess that I am just going to have to give up on for now. (when I find myself skimming almost entire chapters, it's a bad sign)

Character (4/5) : Mo Ke is a flawed human being who complains and struggles, gets mad and jealous, and altogether is a regular guy who's been burned too many times by society. I appreciate his flawed personality, even if it can be irritating at times, because despite his flaws he is a character with multiple traits rather than being a one-note character. His worst quality would probably have to be his sudden bouts of childish immaturity that ruin immersion, while his best quality would probably be his care towards others who could be considered his friends and family.

As for the GenderBender tag that's caused such distress, it's because as a young demon he is androgynous/without gender, but he never goes from male to female, and always considers himself male despite everyone else's assumptions. So, yeah, it's an accurate tag, but without actually straying to an actual gender switch.

Plot (2/5) : With an excess of exposition and explanations at the beginning, and the repetitive battles that feel more like predictable and frustrating filler brings the rating down here. There's great potential for the story here, but as it is now I cannot rate it higher.

Setting (3.5/5) : human world is pretty basic and generic (would give it a 2), but the demon world was interesting and well thought out (would give it a 4).

My only warning to readers would be that this story includes gore, cannibalism, and an instance of suggested r*pe. At the very least, none of these are explicit, and even in the case of the last item the translators have nicely set it apart for readers to easily skip if they so choose (as I did). In any case, not a story for the squeamish or those who are looking for a character who embodies perfection. <<less

Mo Ke is the most useless protagonist I have ever read. The death of a main character usually serves as motivation for the main character, but in this story it seems like it's just to make Mo Ke seem even more useless. The sentence that make me drop this story is as follows:

Thanks to this massive battle, I had gained countless souls yet I didn’t consume a single one of them and instead handed them all over to the Grimoire of the Dead[.]

WHY?!?! Mo Ke sits on the sidelines and... more>> never helps his (her? Lol) companions. When he is finally attacked he freezes up and needs somebody else to protect him. For somebody who hates being useless, he sure doesn't seem to mind letting his friends die and doing nothing about it.

In summary, unlikable protagonist does nothing to advance his character, and the story suffers from it. <<less

The MC is a 40 years old RL loser that dies and transmigrates.
Spoiler

A few chapters later he dies a loser again, all for the sake of his "love" with his "loli older step-sister", but not before saving a loli falllen angel who lets him reincarnate as a minor devil spawn in hell. There he starts his journey on becoming stronger and trying to return to the human world to reunite with his "sister".

[collapse]
.

Spoiler

The main gimmic the author has going for him is that everytime the MC evolves he gets more beautiful so that everyone thinks he is a girl.

[collapse]
Also the world is pretty interesting and the novel has a more "adult" style to it and it fits really well. For example he sometimes compares girls to AV stars, but without it being overly gross or extreme (not like some other "I touch you butt, pretty girl" MCs in chinese "literature"). The girls the MC meets (the harem cast?) are for the most parts very diverse and unusual, which is a novelty.

Unfortunately the author is not very good at story telling. There are a lot of pointless battles chained after each other with no major development. Also for some reason the MC drags a big group of followers with him, without them providing anything to the story besides very bad comedic relief. Luckily the author notices his mistake and provides more interesting group members later on. My biggest problem with the story telling is that I dont know what the MC is thinking. He is basically a whimp, a loser, a bland character. The only thing he has for motivation is meeting that "sister" of his again, but there are no bigger goals to his existence.

Verdict: 3/5. The novel provides some really good and unique ideas and concepts, but it is missing big on the story telling aspect. Also the MC is really uninteresting and weak, the only reason I read it is for the cool gimmicks.

I was blinded by the five star ratings of this novel and gave it a read..... loorrrdd *le very deep sigh*. MC is a very typical japanese webnovel herbivore who is constantly protected by plot-armor-sama. This novel is akin to my sister wanting to make macarons without any baking experience then crying while shouting her frustrations after. it's very shounen type manga for me. 2 stars for effort. dropping it

If the chapters weren't as short as they are, I probably would've dropped this series before getting this far. I had to do a lot of skimming to convince myself to continue. The main character often ignores obvious solutions to a battle, which is difficult to stomach for anyone who likes stragetic warfare or a clever combat scenes. He doesn't explore his abilities very often and forgets what skills he actually has. The fights and battles are quite redundant up until recent chapters, and he's only recently gotten his soldiers... more>> to focus on specialization. The action overall has been pretty weak, and things didn't start to become more interesting until recent chapters.

The MC has a crush on his adopted sister and appears pretty loyal to her until he suddenly starts to develop a harem one day. Unfortunately, his stubborn one-sided affection was his only redeeming character trait. He appears to be developing on the villain protagonist route all of a sudden, so maybe that'll make him more interesting. I'm not optimistic.

He easily changes his opinion completely around without realizing it. He is a hypocrite and strongly racist against his own kind, which could possibly provide some character development in the future. However, the writing has been so weak that I don't have any expectations for it. Even if that kind of thing happens, I doubt I'll be able to endure this series long enough to see it.

There is no creativity, and the action is boring. Arcs are drawn out to a ridiculous degree.

I am going to postpone dropping this series for now because the most recent chapters have been more interesting. That said, it took 150 chapters to get here, so this isn't the first monster reincarnation series I'd recommend for anyone. <<less

I want to give this a five star review, I really do! It is just... even at this point in the story, Mo Ke is still a four star!!!

Sorry, that is a joke that you wont understand at all until you read the first few chapters. But what you still won't understand is how frustrating it is to have him/her still there! He/she has gotten power growth to keep them interesting, but it doesn't feel like they have progressed when it is still like this.

So, four stars, right now. Though,... more>> that may, very likely, become five stars as the story continues.

Okay, that bit of venting over, here are my pros and cons. If you have different opinions about which should actually be which, read the story and you can post a review to say that my list was obviously wrong! Also, scroll to the spoilers tab at the bottom to see what chapter I am at, but be warned that knowing that will be a huge, huge, huge spoiler if you have read or do read the above.

Pros:

    • Four of the five quintessential parts of a story are well done: plot, character, conflict, and setting.
    1. The plot is well written and is actually solid, despite how it might feel, and the pacing isn't as fast as most of these kinds of novels.
    2. Characters that feel old are properly phased from events to let fresher characters enter without actually terminating those old characters, which keeps the character interactions fresh; more accurately, the main character jumps settings without taking those 'old' characters.
    3. The conflicts are well thought out. They are not flat. They are not repetitive. Power growth is alright, even if the MC takes forever to actually rank up.
    4. The setting usually changes every 70-120 chapter. though a couple times the spent time is significantly more or less than that (note: first ten chapters). The scenery feels fresh and the world feels fleshed out, though there is a limit to what the author can actually give us of course. The world (s), its residents, and all the MC's travels feel great overall!
    • High internal motivation. Though they have a lot of problems entirely due to rather uncontrollable, external circumstances, the MC is personally motivated by love and lust and... love... and lust... and they stick to that motivation and it is very much what drives them to do everything they do.
    • Great translation from Creative Novels and Re:Library.
---

Cons:

    • Very much a harem. Hugely harem. The harem is pretty large, but there are infinitely more side characters that would want to be in the harem than actually are. Of both genders too.
    • That brings me to the next Con: the over-the-top gender-benderness. The MC considers themself male, however, within a few chapters they gain a (spoiler: not exactly) female body. They are only into girls and only girls are actually in their harem. I have read gender-benders before, but this takes it to a level which I have never before seen it. Quick note: the MC has not had s*x, as their body is actually incapable of it, and will probably not for a very, very long time (until the obtain a proper gender).
    • 5. Theme. There is none that I can find. Nothing more than superficial, anyway. The plot is driven along by crappy luck for the MC and their internal drive to rise above that luck.
So, four stars, right now. That may, very likely, become five stars as the story continues.

Only read this spoiler warning if you have read the beginning and are prepared for a massive spoiler of how he has progressed in rank.

Spoiler

I am at chapter 468 at the current time.

An excellent premise, and nice beginning, but dragged out terribly and the story became stagnant. At the time of writing, I was at chapter 321, and I stopped reading it and couldn't find any reason to pick it back up. The author throws in enough good scenes to keep you interested, but eventually you lose patience.

Really pretty good even if about 60 of the chapters should have been condensed into 3 chapters. The story is compelling and the MC is not op just different, but this title needs a gender bender tag for how long he has been with out a "pee pee". The story had a great start with drama and betrayals. And then it became a real time tactics / raising simulator. Honestly, I think it would have been better if the early childhood segments were left out to be slowly revealed later because, here, the author had teased them... and then he promptly changes the story to some other genre. In other words, those juicy bits of drama aren't even going to show up for like 1000 chapters later, and in the meantime you're just watching a main character slowly... more>> becoming stronger in a realm of superpowers.

As you read through the chronicles of the MC's journey, it almost feels like watching paint dry. As each chapter comes up, you know in the back of your head that he will escape eventually. Because, plot armor. And in the meantime, the real reason why you started reading, finding out how everything will play out, has been shelved with a cliffhanger.

Sure you can find excitement in the tactics and the like, but that wasn't why I came to this story and because of that, I kind of feel that the author is spending too much effort explaining each hit and miss -- aka DBZ longest 5 minutes -- instead of keeping it short and simple while spinning things in an exciting way to keep the readers enthused. <<less

Really good story actually.

i loved the very first chapter, you can practically feel the unhappiness of the MC. The following chapters after his rebirth are kind of a drag and were a real chore to get trough. But I do admit, its understandable given the MC and actually makes the story more realistic and luckily these annoying chapters end with quite the bang. After this the story really picks up and is very much worth the read.

his compatriots die on a frequent basis too, which is a plus in my... more>> book, it really makes you hope they will get trough another day and makes the reading more interesting.

We can really see how Mo Ke develops as a character and how his enviroment changes him... or is it a her? Maybe he/she will be genderless.

2nd review, ch48

I am fully in love with this story! There are so many things that effect Mo Ke! If you havent red the first 10 chapter you probably wouldn't have noticed it. Truth be told the first ten chapters almost killed me from inside. I hated our MC who basicly thought the world revolved around him. Always expecting to be something special. I would have dropped it then if I haven't noticed that "He" (at the time) started growing a bit. "He" always did "his" best, ebiet out of expectation of "him" being special but Mo Ke persistantly did it for many years and urged "his" adopted sister to leave for the academy.

Once Mo Ke became a demen he/she started developing in a way that was no longer painful for me to read. He/she felt emotions, no longer expected anything special out of his/her life. Mo Ke had luck and bad luck in equal amounts, amounts that a normal person has and was greatfull for all of the aportuneties life gave him/her.

Mo Ke became attached to the potatos which were his/her subordinates. The named ones played a bigger part in the story.

Spoiler

What really got me was Big1's death. He was so loyal and devoted to Mo Ke. Calling himself lordship I couldn't hep but to love him! And yet... he died. Just like other named imps before him... It was werry painful for Mo Ke and myself and our demon MC even cried. I always thought that Big1 would live.. This ultimatly made me concerned for the other named devils. I in particular worry about yet to be named Mo Ci and her baby.. Mo Ke was so worried about her that Im afraid if she or the baby died Mo Ke would lose his/her sanety for a long while and go on a rampage.. thats how much attachemnt MC has for this weak devil..

3rd review ch51

OH GOD WHY!! MO CI NOOO!!! Why? Just as I though that she will get better and become a reacuring character... SHE WAS EVEN NAMED DAM IT! Well, on the brith sid ethe egg is fine, not only that but its also a tier 4 as the prison of the dead appeared below the church.

But honestly I no longer belive in love and happiness. This nove crushed me. I shall no longer have brith expectations for even brither future... yea.. it's not gonna happen. But I shall still read this story...

IT'S TOO GOOD!

All in all I still give this story a 5/5 and will keep updating this review! <<less

I'm seeing a lot of confused people around here about the whole gender bender thing. I have looked around and have seen people who read ahead say that this novel is NOT a gender bender. Apparently when the MC becomes a demon he becomes genderless (which is not surprising because there definitely are genderless demons in mythology), also there was someone who said that later on the protagonist will regain his male gender later on in the story (about this I'm not 100% sure but I think based on the... more>> revised tags that it will be correct). So for all the people out there that don't like gender bender it should be OK. I have not read ahead myself so I can't say it is 100% certainty so if someone here has read the raws ahead of the translation can clarify this further in a spoiler tag it would be much appreciated ;).

As for the novel itself even though it's just starting up I'm certainly enjoying it (still hope it won't become gender bender ;)) <<less

Interesting novel, a little slow paced especially the fist 10 chapters. The MC is more of a schemer rather than the typical one man army. In summary this novel is a good read except for 1 flaw in my opinion, there was no need for it to be gender bender. This is also 1 of the reasons im thinking if I should still continue reading this.

btw when I first went here there was no gender bender tag, it was only updated late so I had no way knowing that

TL;DR : No character progression at all in 50 chapters despite an obvious wish to evolve shown by the MC. Simply put : you can begin anywhere in the story and still understand what the hell is going on, which is terribly bad writting.

The premices are cool, the ideas are originals... more or less. The MC is obnoxious but not unable to change, the system seems quite precise and clear. What could go wrong with this story ? You said everything ? Congrats, you were right. I have nothing against... more>> bad jokes or subpar writing, but this story take them way too far... to the point where SAO Alfheim arc seems good in comparison. Like the gender joke made me smile the first time, roll my eyes the second, sigh the third and skip the chapter the fourth as it never change the way it happen and often last longer than necessary. Jokes are one thing where size does matter, and the shorter they are, the better it is. This one was barely funny the first time and simply painful the tenth.

The story does not progress. At all. Never. It is litteraly a rince and repeat of all the events where the only change is the scale or the place. Nothing move in a meaningful way. This story is WAY TOO SLOW. And I read Overgeared for heaven sake. There is a limit to everyones patience and this story clearly is recommended by either trolls or people that just began reading novels. The worst part is that it isn't boring because it does not progress, but because the little progress that happen is predictable as the MC... does not change.

The MC at chapter 1 is an otaku lolicon that does not work, at chapter 5 is a failed swordman that work very little, at chapter 11 is a smarter than usual devil that does not fight not gain significant power dooming him if not for his lust smell. Simply put : despite what he says all the time and despite KNOWING what he does is counter productive, he does not change himself nor his method EVER. He is sloth and pride incarnate, not what his dedicated sin are choosen, which show that the story is forced by the whim of the author and not written thanks to the pre-established rules that the author placed in the first place which create a sh*t ton of contradiction and is bad writing. Long story short : there are no character progression.

The system is interesting but is clearly badly used and often simply ignored by its own author. This is sad for something that has that much potential. I put a 1/5 both because I can't put a 0 and because the system deserve a point. Do not waste time on this one, if it did not get better in 50 chapters it won't ever get better. Like I said : at least Overgeared began showing clear sign of progression by chapter 30 and was already promissing said change at the beginning. I will not wait for 200 chapter for a tiny progression on the MC of this one as it is simply pointless. <<less

meh, I gave him a chance for the guy who read 300 chapters. But it is a garbage, support the 100 chapters waiting for the good part and it is not.

Especially since the protagonist is an a**hole, he does not learn from any of his mistakes 230 chapters and still continues with the same shit. Of helping people like an angel, and in a chapter they make fun of being a hypocrite.

worst of all is that the narrative does not help at all, since it only makes the protagonist look... more>> like a jerk.

example:
help someone and we read their thoughts while doing it, and the only thing they think is "I will help you, it breaks my soul to see it that way, I must do it".

which makes him look like a fool and does not learn from his mistakes, but then the author comes out as if to explain that it was a good move to help that person, instead of demonstrating it in the thoughts of the protagonist he must explain to us as in 2, 3 or 4 f*cking paragraphs to tell us it was a good decision.

It does not make him look smart but it was all good luck and he is a ret*rd who does not think ahead.

That is one of my biggest problems because it is repeated many times, MANY.
and if you don't believe me, you can go to chapter 215 and see the comments they have about the intelligence of the protagonist.

After that, another of his problems would be that it is disgustingly long, which could have taken 20 - 30 chapters, was lengthened to 100. I don't blame the guys who really couldn't do more of that and that is that it really is sometimes unbearable.

the only good point, would be the plot that the author "seems" to have planned, and I say it seems because to lengthen it stuffed and yes, 1 chapter was taken explaining the division of the worms and probably someone says: "but it has a purpose in the future "and if it probably has something to do but it seems like crap to me.

I like harem, but I feel discomfort because it looks like a Japanese harem, all generic. I hope I'm wrong.

many jokes, all the jokes are bad, REALLY BAD, the only time I laughed was in chapter 210, it was the only one well done.

the only thing for which I give 3 stars is the plot, the author has planned it especially for the first 10 chapters and the following ones, the protagonist is someone without talent who suffers and if he could learn from his mistakes, believe me that it would be a great novel but probably short and therefore not of money.

I will try to spoil myself and see if it is worth following, because I like the plot but what they do to extend it, I dislike it.

English is not my language, forgive my mistakes. <<less
