The Demon King Seems to Conquer the World

As a self-professed no-lifer, Yuri idles his days away in front of a computer. This all changes the moment his life in Japan comes to an abrupt end and he finds himself reborn in the strange new world of the Shiyalta Kingdom. His new life includes everything he once lacked: loving parents, a comfortable home, and a promising future breeding and raising birds on his dad’s ranch. For centuries, the kingdom he now calls home has enjoyed peace and prosperity, shielded by friendly nations that, like Shiyalta itself, were established with the collapse of a once-great empire. War is a distant problem, relevant only to Shiyalta’s ruling families whose warriors periodically set out to join the fighting upon massive birds trained by Yuri’s dad and others. But this peaceful existence can’t last forever. Something rotten lies at the heart of the kingdom, and it doesn’t take someone with Yuri’s exceptional intelligence to realize that those distant battles will only remain irrelevant for so long.

I started reading it because the manga was good

the web novel atleast upunti chapter 63 was really bad, I guess the light novel version was improved?

2 stars for now

Spoiler

The MC is sometimes aggressive but sometimes passive, his interaction and problem solving skills is not convincing at all to me atleast.

His business was burned and he doesn't seem to be angry, and this same villain tried to kill him and he was so passive about it.

The MC is degenerate while trying to be cool about it. He is lecturing by convincing his innocent friend to go to brothel or steal his friend's crush underwear to satiet the friend's lust. I will probabaly understand buy not condone it if it was told as a joke, I had chilhood acquaintances who joke like this in 2000s but the MC seem serious about all this. Is the prstition culture in japan that bad?

This one is good, you spend the first 60 plus chapters thinking you know exactly what type of story this is... but I promise you when you are at 200 plus, you are looking back in bemus**ent wondering if it is the same story. Which is not to say quality falls, rather the opposite. It unmistakably is a worthwhile read. I, honestly think some part of me would have been satisfied to read to the end and see the story just be a slice of life story with light... more>> elements of business, until the end. What feels like the entirety of the story to those reading through translation will soon change. The arc that brings about the change I expect will have most readers start reading MTL it is that hard to put down when the transition begins honestly. When the shift began I did not eat and barely slept for two days to catch up, this story will leave you with bitter sweet feelings that is the truth. It is honestly well done the MC and his out of the box thinking shape the world in revolutionary manner for the better or worst is debatable on your position and perspective. I want to be as vague as possible speaking ahead, because honestly it would anger me to death if someone had spoiled the events to unfold before I read them myself. It would take away a lot of suspense that could be viewed as a privilege to the uninformed reader. When they read people will likely be surprised and maybe some annoyed but feel it a better development than the slice of life. The truth is the MC is going to mature in this story and readers are following that journey and where it leads him. A selfish wish of mine would have been to see the MC remain that casual intellectual wasting his days idly instead. Even at the cost of a good story. <<less

The Genre tags are misleading. There is little to no action and adventure.

The better one would be Slice of Life, considering most of the novel until chapter 60 is spent at the academy or at the MC's household.

While the MC is smarter, more mature and not wimpy as the usual jap MCs, there is a serious problem with the novel's pacing, writing and translation.

There's too much tell don't show and internal monologues. Also the fantasy elements are thin. There are some different body characteristics, a few fantastic animals (2 so... more>> far) but no magic or more fantasy aspects: it's middle ages + giant eagle riders and chocobos. In turn, the MC is basically a school teacher monologuing about a bunch of scientific knowledge that he's applying in his current world, like a copy paste from wikipedia. That drags the pacing down even further.

It's a pity, I liked the characters, the MC and the main plot of the story: An invasion by a foreign empire that will certanly cause the downfall of his current country. Unfortunately the plot barely advanced in this 60 chapters I've read, and it was mostly a big training arc with lot of mundane events which didn't move the plot forward by much or at all.

By chapter 57 the Author started to show his weird fetiches and the story started leading towards harem. I decided to quit by then.

Spoiler

He told a 15 year old kid that it was ok to steal a girl's panties to satisfy his lust over her. At the very least, he's not one of those sexualizing kids left and right, but it's still a little disturbing.

No magic, no miracle. A change of pace for people bored reading novel about Godly MC. This novel tell us about the story of someone who got reincarnated as what we usually called an elf into a world with similar geographic to our earth.

What you're going to read:

  • age progression tag: so the story start from his childhood and around what happened to his family and so on. Author did a good job on the world building and character development.
  • wars tag: Arc 8 - c91+ are when it's getting serious about it. The protagonist is trying his best to survive and win the war. And here we will learn about the cruelty of wars with no cliche development. Each chapter really conveyed how the battle are unfolding and how they're trying to outsmart the enemy (Sometimes there will be enemy PoV chapters). Remember no magic, so if you got wounded then you're basically done for if there are no one who can tend it. Some of the chapters also has a drawn map by the author, from the usual continental map to a small scale map of the ongoing battle.
In conclusion, if you're in for a long ride (this novel ain't sort) about wars and politics, you will enjoy this novel.

Spoiler

Also has some sweet moment for romance, MC isn't dense

So far it's not bad. There's a lot of world building and exposition, but it's generally spaced out well within the plot of the story. Most of them are at least tangentially tied with whatever the MC happens to be doing at the time. The plot itself seems to move forward relatively quickly, but I think I think only in the last 10 or so chapters has there been character development (I'm on 46 as of this writing).

Like many reincarnation/isekai novels, the MC does start to introduce technology. Compared to... more>> others, this MC has at least a bit more justification for understanding the chemicals, processing, and manufacturing involved in creating those devices. He's a NEET at the start of the story, but he previously had some sort of science/engineering background prior to that. It's at least more reasonable than your average high school student knowing how to make gunpowder or make stainless steel (examples from other novels).

Translation quality is spotty. It's definitely not as bad as some MTLs i've tried to read, but it would definitely benefit from an editor. It's uncommon for a sentence to simply not make sense, but there are times when I think that based on the context the translator is mistaking an affirmative sentence as a negative ("you aren't" vs "you are, aren't you" kind of thing). There's also times when I think the speaker is mislabeled. Overall it's not that bad, but you should keep those things in mind while reading until the translator gets someone to go back and edit. <<less

I'm not gonna write a full review, just complete what has been said in other reviews with high score.

Translation can be a bit confusing, that's the main negative point. Outside of that, I have nothing big to reproach to this novel. It feels very complete: Worldbuilding is INSANE (at chap 176, and no doubt it's gonna become even greater given how it progresses), Characters are interesting, the MC and his interactions feel real.

Overall, I had a bad feeling about it after 20/30 chapters because it was a boring story without... more>> any innovation. What I realised later is that it doesn't even need to greatly innovate to be good. No magic, no godlike powers. Romance well done (IMO), both chill and very intense arcs. Story was planned in a good way, it's not just a succession of arcs. It's not obvious what will happen next. MC can actually lose even when he commits into something.

Read until chapter 110 at least before quitting, I know it takes time but that's when the story go from okay to great.

EDIT: (Chapter 176 -> Chapter 278, in MTL) Quality is still good. The story's changed a lot, but I like it anyway. It feels like something which could take at least 200 more chapters to end, if it's rushed. That's good, but release is slow... Overall, story isn't exceptional, but it does better than most (only the military aspect is average, but not bad, it's just not the main focus).

Hello everyone! I am the current translator of "The Demon King Seems to Conquer the World". I would just like to address some of the reviews who have generally only read up to chapters 60-80. In the beginning, this novel is very slow as this is where world-building and character development/showcasing characters begin. Demon King is set in a medieval fantasy Scandinavia where there are a lot of religious and racial tensions which are all explained in a very long lecture chapter which I will admit that even I had... more>> to skip. However, this information is necessary for the future of the story in which all of the action and adventure parts take place.

After we get out of the main childhood arcs and into the young adult/adulthood stages, we are shown a lot of new female characters who most will believe to be a future harem for the protagonist, but don't worry! There is NO harem tag for the web novel, and everyone can rest assured that there is no harem up to the point I have read. Action, adventure, romance, and basically everything that is promised in the tags are given from this stage up, and this is when the real story begins. Although the first 70~ chapters were used primarily as world-building which is hard for some people to digest, the payout for reading up to that point feels great with realistic characters, a great romance, dueling, warfare, and some political scheming. <<less

Frankly it's worse than expected, there're glaring plot holes and tags along with the title are simply wrong (the title holds no links to the novel as of chapter 143).

Lots of chapters could be easily cut off even if you enjoy slice of life Eg:

Spoiler

There's chapter when queen sends her underling assassin to fetch MC and tells him how women used to brew tea for generations. boom entire chapter.

[collapse]

There's no real action/adventure until volume 8. Biggest fantasy part of this novel is his kingdom/people still existing with how incompetent they're portrayed as.

Spoiler

MC is known as a genius, made huge contributions by stopping a plague, top of the cream of the academy and considered as a potential ideal son-in-law by the queen (she offers him so), yet when one of governing witch houses representative (what else can you call a groomed heir as?) pretty much admits in public of burning his workplaces down - all she does is...a frown.

Another example - enemy has new weapons= guns, grenades, cannons even a gunship, yet they never try to change ANY strategy while using swords and spears...

Until chapter 140, eagle rides are worthless unless in the hands of MC or his uncle at the start of the novel (one dragon flies into 20 eagle rides and they can't do anything until MC arrives)

[collapse]

It does get better from volume 7/8 onwards - if you can ignore plot holes.

Spoiler

Since the said dragon can handle 20 eagle riders, one would assume it's pretty big, yet when it falls from high altitude it doesn't break any trees and is completely invisible so the said eagle rides ABANDON their princess (it bit the eagle she was on while falling).

[collapse]

Enemy mid tier commander randomly turning superhuman

Spoiler

Cankers nose got completely destroyed and it was written that without proper treatment he'll keep on bleeding, AND YET he wears full plate armor runs entire night with no food, no rest and fight MC while never losing breath????

[collapse]

And then progressing the plot with something improbable

Spoiler

Soon before enemy siege on the royal capital they caught an IMPERIAL GUARD deserter who pulled a weapon out on friendly who's supposed to do important mission for their royal family and instead of hanging him as an example they put him in a prison, let him escape from prison, entire city, city walls and until enemy camp with no pursuit - so he can progress plot by selling out MC

[collapse]

Pacing is abnormally slow - all 143 chapters cover about 70-80 chapters of most other novels in term of plot progress or even heartwarming chapters which it does have some.

Spoiler

In fact he did not finish academy yet.

[collapse]

Modern technology tag is something that will perhaps come online in the future?

Spoiler

Enemy war technology: Guns, grenades, gunship, cannon

Allied forces war technology: Swords, spears, arrows

And remember that he's heir of richest and strongest military household with favor of the royal family and his own very profitable company with access to goods from other countries - presented as genius with modern knowledge. Despite all of this he's still behind in technology for most part with notable exception of lighter and a press.

[collapse]

The longer it goes the better it gets but I cannot recommend reading it if it takes 6-7 volumes of rather sub-par if not boring novel before it gets there (there're some good chapters on the way, too few however) .

On top of that translation is... lacking:

Spoiler

People changing their names, some typos, some making my head hurt on the question how: Syamu - shamu/shamamu, Rook - Luke????. People talking to themself a lot. There're sentences that I've honestly given up on trying to decrypt.

[collapse]

It does have good points, but there's enough positive reviews here talking about them. <<less

Ok I'm at c26 when I write this review. It's not bad. Pacing is slow and detailed, but time skips are there where necessary. Monologues and narration are two different things in this title but somehow author kinda gets confused sometimes.

Oh for someone who said MC is typical spineless jp MC, watch yer tongue, babe. Cultural difference doesnt mean japanese are wimps. Difference in handling problems doesn't mean your ideal fistfight to solve problem always work. This MC is a logical one, not a wimp one. If you ask me,... more>> then he isn't a wimp. He faced a raging adult soldier and gave a rough life lesson to a bully. Directly. Using fists. You need to check your reading skills if you missed those events.

Buuut it's not like I really like this title in particular. As far as c26 I'm currently in, I'm very confused. The world building and character developments are there and very detailed, so detailed that I have no clue what am I reading. Demon king, conquering the world, those words are on the title but there's no magic so far and it doesn't seem like he's a demon race. There are battles and war situations, sure, but so far in the surface I feel like the title is very misleading. Might be explained better in later chapters but for now this is my first impression <<less

TLDR: Great characters, great worldbuilding, great story, but the novel starts slow and takes a while to build. There is action and combat but it won't be for a while. One of the best I have read in a long while.

This novel is incredible. It has good characters, a compelling story, and develops nicely. The story relies heavily on the development of Yuri's relationships with others and it is handled really well. There are lots of great moments of tension, and violence, but also heart warming moments.

The story begins slow.... more>> If you are expecting Yuri to be some overpowered monster from chapter 1 you will be disappointed, however the slow worldbuilding is necessary. In fact the worldbuilding is excellent, you gain a real feeling of how the world runs and can appreciate the subtle changes happening as the story progresses. Even small things like the animals in certain places etc... are interesting.

The novel and the plot points make sense, nothing seems to come completely out of left field, and appears internally consistent, and there are some real surprises in store for readers.

The translation isn't perfect, there are some small mistakes here and there but it didn't impair my experience. In fact, the translator goes to great length to translate maps and add pictures of more unusual historical terms (for example a rope lighter, or a caravel, or a naginata) which helps with the clarity.

Overall this novel does everything right, and I'm excited to see where it goes (though I'm not really sure its a traditional harem novel given what happens in volume 12) <<less

Well, supposedly the story changes drastically, in a good way, as another reviewer said, but up to chapter 30, it's still pretty much a mindless slice-of-life through and through. It's not bad, the characters have enough depth to make it an enjoyable enough experience, and it's the same with the world-building.

In his past life, the MC was already someone very smart, and in this new world, he's treated like a genius among geniuses, prompting a lot of scientific mumbo jumbo from the author. On the other hand, his scientific knowledge... more>> is pretty much what advances the plot forward, as he produces a vaccine against chickenpox, he invents paper, and so on. It's typical isekai shit, but it's entertaining enough, I guess. There's also some semblance of romance with his cousin (SAO basically) and the princess, but it's so small that it barely deserves the romantic subplot tag.

I know you're not supposed to rate novels according to the quality of translation, but sadly, it's one of the things that kills this particular novel for me. It's just right on the border between 'ok at least I can kinda understand' and 'painful to read.' Sure, I can tell there's a lot of effort into every chapter, but about 30% of each one is completely unintelligible. It makes for a really frustrating reading when most slice-of-life novels are already quite plain, to begin with.

EDIT: after reading up to chapter 77, I can tell that the author is already showing signs of making the plot evolve into a different, more interesting direction. There's a lot more political and economic intrigue I suppose, but it remains mostly as a slice-of-life novel.

Regrettably, I just have to say that the translator simply chose the wrong novel to MTL. The amount of useless exposition the author puts in is almost shocking and coupled with the fact that the novel sometimes goes pretty deep into hardcore scientific explanations, it makes it quite hard to understand despite the translator's best efforts. There's something about this story that keeps dragging me in regardless of all of the above, though. However, I don't think you miss out on much if you simply skip this one. Conversely, if you're interested in reading, you're pretty much risking a cerebral hemorrhage, so proceed at your own caution.

This story is so beautiful and wonderfully written from CHP 1-70 they are building the story and telling the growth of the MC. Then from there on the story starts to move

  • This has the romance but that's not the focus it just pop-up here and there so it is just sweet to my eyes
  • The story also tend to focus on war and war strategy and also tell the story from POV of a soldier (MC) and there is some surviving in the wild part to

This novel is cheap knock off of "Ascendance of Bookworm" with worst pacing, blander characters, cliched world, more plot holes then cheese grater and word building which sometimes PAINFUL TO READ because of all unnecessary padding. Sometimes whole chapter go back to back describing something what can be explained in two paragraphs and sometimes even less then that. Main characters think he on earth? Bam, two chapters of looking on map with all colorful description. We need to know what religion of the world? Boom, chapter of MC attending lecture... more>> in school. Queen send for MC to make request, oh, how about we spend half of chapter describing tea? All of this colorful description even sometimes inserted in chapter what you can skip half of it and lose nothing because it unnecessary and only exist because author can't find better way to insert world building in narrative.

Pacing all over the place sometimes skipping mouths and years, describing them in just couple paragraphs, but then story kick in it SOOOOOO SLOW describing MC life day by day very meticulously to the point what you should add "slow life" tag in description. On top of that author priority in story telling is plain incomprehensible and all over the place what I sometimes can't understand what kind of story is that. Its start with MC reincarnated in another world and first 8 chapter is describing his first 10 years of life with nothing significant happening, is it slow life in another world? (Fair enough first chapters cant be that significant but it became worse from there). Then his clan lose its head and his father trust in place of head of family, is it about making you clan best in country and then the world, no he immediately enrolled in knight academy become best in his grade but we hop from one year to another like bunny with nothing interesting happening. Then he decided create paper and printing press to make money but we only get to read 2 chapter of how he got past initial failure and away we go. What kind of story author want to tell??? Is it about him becoming best knight in country or world? Oh, sure we told what MC best at everything and even show couple times how he curb-stomp his opponent but aside from what we skip his years in academy like passing bullet train from then he was 10 to his 15 years. Is it about how he invent various things and make his country and world better? Well aside from making his bank account more fat we don't see more noticeable change in world around MC aside from telling us what he make other people angry for cutting in they profit.

But the most damnable thing about this novel what MC is don't have any goal in mind and just hop from one thing to another without any destination at all. Other say it get good after 100+ chapter but going to that point as like slowly pulling out are teeth, slogging through useless exposition, constant time hopping, slow pacing narrative and obvious plot holes. If you can think of this novel as "slow life in another world" where goal of MC to only live comfortable life till he die from old age or author and readers get bored you can find enjoyment here. If you want thrilling actions, interesting characters and world building woven in narrative and not thrown at you like lectures in mathematical textbook go read "Ascendance of Bookworm". Or alternatively you can read 100 chapters of "The Demon King Seems to Conquer the World" and waste days of your live to get to interesting parts and find some kind of enjoyment. The choice is yours. <<less

I honestly don't know how I feel about the series overall, there are really neat concepts and ideas but the author will randomly copy/paste real world history which is completely immersion breaking. The story goes from describing and flushing out details of a fictitious religion then makes a hard left turn into adding Catholicism into the world rather than creating another fictitious religion. The story kind of turns into an alt history earth with the addition of elves and giant eagles. I stopped reading after chapter 35 just because of... more>> the writing style (info dumps) and lack of meaningful story progression. <<less

The translation is decent, other than the occasional issue of gender pronouns switching. The translator places the speaker's name after they say something, which is very good, but it's *just* the name, and gives no indication of inflection, emotion, or phrasing that may be lost from the changes in language.

As for the story itself... Other reviews have stated typical flaws: it reads like a journal more than a story, there is no action or adventure at this point, there is little to no magic, and it leans heavily to harem... more>> tropes.

Spoiler

At chapter 45, we learn the MC actually has no male friends. His one friend is actually a girl! This means the only boy his age with a name is Dolla, a complete thug and idiot. The men are also painted as a little simple and usually very violent. So... handsome, smart, and well mannered MC surrounded by girls?
