Shi Xiaoyu inherited her family’s culinary skills and opened a small eatery, where she served exquisite and delicious dishes that warmed both the stomach and the heart. She grew up listening to Jing Jiayuan’s songs, which were filled with positive energy and served as a beacon of light during her darkest days. However, Shi Xiaoyu never imagined she would ever cross paths with her idol.

One day, however, the severely anorexic Jing Jiayuan happened to pass by her eatery. He tasted Shi Xiaoyu’s cooking and left four words: “Regret meeting too late,” Then, he passed away.

Reborn, Shi Xiaoyu found herself in the body of Shi Xiaoyu, a struggling actress. To her surprise, she realized she had traveled back to the time when her idol, Jing Jiayuan, was just starting his career. She had become a female star in the same era as Jing Jiayuan. Moreover, her agency had secured her a spot on a travel reality show.

The guests on the show included none other than Jing Jiayuan!

Agent: “This show thrives on drama, and with your fighting spirit, it should make you famous.”

Show Producer: “To make things interesting, we’ll only give each of you fifty euros a day for all expenses, including food, clothing, transportation, and sightseeing.”

Fans: “Stay out of Jiayuan’s spotlight! Just follow along quietly and don’t try to stand out.”

Jing Jiayuan: “I’m not picky, I just don’t like eating bad food.”

After some time filming the show—

Agent: “Shi Xiaoyu, how come I never knew you could cook like this? Shocked.jpg”

Show Producer: “How are they eating so well on just fifty euros a day? What if all the guests gain weight? Stressed.jpg”

Fans: “Oh my god, I tuned in for my idol, but now I’m getting hooked on all this amazing food. This show is addictive. Poisoned.jpg”

Jing Jiayuan: “I told you, I’m not picky. I’ll eat anything she makes. Innocent.jpg”

This is a heartwarming and healing story of exploring the world, enjoying delicious food, and sharing sweet moments with her idol.

Surprisingly refreshing and open minded. This is secretly a roadtrip Bildungsroman masquerading as a female-oriented Chinese entertainment romance novel. From the latter comes its standard plotline and narrative; even the small episodes will seem familiar. Nonetheless the story displays its warmth through a series of implausible but likeable minor characters: ... more>>

the minor characters in question are caricatures no doubt, but caricatures that are meant to make you appreciate the wider world and not retreat into the insularity of the Chinese entertainment industry---at least as it is displayed in most similar novels. Light on romance and showbiz for a story clearly cemented in that particular narrative tradition, the story does succeed in touching a note when we see how exposure to a different outlook (maybe through contact with a different culture) leads to the growth of the central characters (including main side characters). <<less
