In the third year of Yifeng, the illegitimate daughter of the Ningyang Marquis’ household entered the palace.

Entering the palace is like stepping into an unfathomable sea; the only rule is to never fall in love.

Ning Shuyan was well aware of this. What she sought were wealth, power, and the Emperor’s favor. Over three years, she planned meticulously, captivating the Emperor’s attention and climbing from the rank of Cairen to Noble Consort.

The harem whispered that the Emperor’s affection for women was dictated by utility and interest. When Xiao Yu first met her, he was intrigued by this woman. He said, “I didn’t expect her to have such beauty.” Everyone claimed that his interest in her was merely fleeting. Yet, that fleeting interest turned into a lifetime of favor for Ning Shuyan.

Xiao Yu later admitted: At first, he was drawn to her looks, then captivated by her alluring charm.

Unexpectedly, a lifetime passed, and no matter how much he looked at her, he never grew tired.

To him, she was gentle and enchanting, pure and kind, and deeply devoted to him. Even years later, she remained unchanged in his heart, as radiant as ever, with his love for her growing stronger with time.

This was so much different from what I thought. After reading so many historical harem romances, the interaction and dedication of ML to FL grew on me.

  • Xiao Yu: Emperor with low EQ, and who restrains his indulgence with himself.
Spoiler

You can see his growth ij character here: At the moment, the woman in front of him seemed to be really different. She could empathize with him, had many interesting ideas, and had a good temper. He just hoped that she would not change. Although he, as the emperor, could not fall in love with a woman, he was willing to pamper a woman forever. However, later this type of thinking changed to: "I didn't understand the love between men and women before, but now I understand it, and I don't want to leave any regrets. I just hope that my wife is the one I love in my heart, and we can be buried in the same tomb even after death."

  • Ning Shuyan: I admired her resolute decisions and careful planning. I adored her character development.
Spoiler

She went from diminishing her perception of the Emperor to truly caring for him. If... he was not an emperor, if he was just a prince, she might also be willing to give him a little bit of her true heart.

This thought came to her mind spontaneously, but when Ning Shuyan's eyes fell on the dragon pattern on his hair crown, her heart suddenly turned cold.

Her fingertips tightly grasped his clothes.

There is no "if" in this world. He is destined to be the emperor and the most ruthless or amorous person in the world.

Once you fall in love, you will lose miserably.

[collapse]

There was conspiracy in the harem battle, true sisterhood, childcare, filial piety. It was a pleasant reading overall. I wasn't expecting true romance, so I was possitively astonished and surprised to find it here.

Ah, classic harem scheming!

I’m really enjoying this so far. The main character is sympathetic and interesting to follow, though her occasionally mentioned background as a transmigrator seems like an afterthought so far. As of this review, we’re still at early stages, so the schemes are relatively simple and it’s not clear whether the Emperor is “love interest” or “final boss, ” but the book is already showing an interesting twist with the MC, despite herself, befriending an early villain - I’m enjoying their relationship and hoping the death flags are... more>> red herrings.

Recommended so far to harem drama fans! <<less

This everything you'll expect from a good palace intrigue novel and more! Well written, a tad too long for my liking, but all the loose ends were tightened adequately.

The schemes, the calculations, the ruthlessness! Palace intrigue on point!

Spoiler

I really didn't expect Chen meiren to end up being so close to Ning Shuyan, so much so that even the emperor became jealous of their relationship

Spoiler

Also didn't expect the queen to pull a big one and straight up poison the emperor! She really didn't know how to scheme, did she?

Our FL :
Spoiler

Honestly, I was expecting the FL to be like the TJOAIC FL but she was a bit... too sincere like she felt guilty from time to time, for not sincerely loving the emperor, and she actually fell in love with him, when he promised not to hold another concubine selection and even abolished most of the concubines after he was bedridden from poison and was not expected to survive

ML:
Spoiler

He is a very sentimental and sincere type of a person, even as an emperor, his schemes were not that deep, as compared to other novel's emperors. From the way he remembered his mother, to the way he treated his brothers, it was clear that getting the throne was his way to survive in the imperial harem and fulfill his mother's expectations of him. He unconsciously wanted sincere affection from his harem, and FL was the first one to give him that experience, she treated him as her husband, not as her monarch and let the mighty emperor feel the pleasure of being an ordinary family man. I feel like, in alternate universe, he would have been that famous Wangye who only had his Wangfei in his harem. So, no surprise, the emperor is as whipped as frosting on a cake, when it comes the FL, by the end of the book

Things that could have been better:

Spoiler

The ending seemed a bit rushed, ngl, the empress' scheme was impulsive, and even though she wasn't the sharpest sword in the armory, the level of recklessness was disappointing. If I was the empress, I would have poisoned the emperor in a way that it doesn't trace back to me, or framed FL as a demon consort, so the emperor is constantly under pressure of the court. I never would have done the butterfly scheme, and done so at such an inopportune time.

Also, Shen Cainu's character arc was unsatisfying. She has so much potential, she could've served as a contrast to the emperor, as he realized that he loved only FL, even if there was another woman who loved him sincerely. Her ending was forced too.

The last 60 chapters, the emperor became a simp, after he realized his love and almost lost FL a couple times, becoming very indulgent. He should have slowly unraveled the true depth of NSY feelings for him, have a moment of heartbreak, realize that he loved her no matter what, and be determined to make her fall for him by offering lifelong sincerity. Also, things we a little too smooth for NSY and she never truly suffered a loss, so that was a bit unrealistic.

[collapse]

In conclusion, this an absolute gem of a book, not TJOAIC type, but not a fake one either. A semi-precious stone, that deserves occasional re-read and affection. I expect great books from this author, in a few years. <<less
