Many islands dotted the vast oceans of this world. However, some of the islands were a lot more sinister than the rest. Those islands, known as Nightmare Islands, were true nightmares to all but the strongest and most fortunate. Children were kidnapped and thrown on these isolated islands by the Nightmare Palace, forced to sign soul pacts with evil soul pets: Nightmares. These devils slowly devoured the souls of their trainers to grow stronger. If the children did not cultivate fast enough, their souls will be devoured whole, leaving only an empty husk behind.

Chu Mu, the protagonist, was an heir to the Chu Clan, but due to a plotted mu*der, he was thrown on the island, sentencing him to almost certain death. Dancing on the edge of life and death, he struggled to survive with a small Moonlight Fox he captured. When he finally escaped the devilish foremen on his island, he couldn’t help but let a breath out. But little does he know, the experience was only a beginning to a fated journey with his little Moonlight Fox…

I would describe this series as "someone who was unsatisfied with pokemon and decided to make a hardcore cultivation story about realistic pokemon."

I would call the tone downright vicious compared to the original pokemon though. Most trainers actually try and kill the trainer as a way to quickly end the fight. Throwing knives at eachothers throat during the match is considered normal. Small children are gathered and slaughtered in an effort to raise dangerous soul pets. So yea, although it's pokemon, it's a COMPLETELY different audience they're targeting here.

The logic... more>> in the series is far more credible than the pokemon series. There's a very complicated cultivation system built in that actually works more with soul pets than it does with other cultivation series.

The ranking system is incredibly unclear and until Chu Mu is approaching that rank himself, it's never clarified what goes where. In fact, the translation is typo heavy and in the first volume, frequently confused Chu Mu's rank as a Spirit Disciple despite clearly being a Spirit Soldier. I still don't really know if there's some stage between disciple and soldier. I used to think the rank after teacher would be emperor but apparently it's master.

The character growth is a more than a bit ridiculous. Not only does the author use timeskips to jump the protagonists cultivation level by huge margins, but more importantly, he makes the protagonist highly reliant on plot armor, luck, and bullsh*t soul pet growth spurts. This issue isn't so prevalent in the most recent chapters of the translation.

The initial pacing at the start of the series was pretty good, but then the author seemed to want to finish the series or something and the pacing just went to hell. It took like 50-70 chapters for the protagonist to grow 3 ranks in his cultivation and gain a second soul pet. After that, the protagonist gained like 10 ranks in about 10 chapters, and gained something like 4 more soul pets.

The translator overuses the word "eminently". Around chapter 70 I counted 2 occurrences per chapter. It's a nice word, but please use a thesaurus. There are multiple words with similar meaning. Overusing such an exotic word ruins the word completely.

I honestly don't understand why so many authors seem to think mu*derous sociopaths who laugh in the face of mu*dered children are so common. In the real world, the sort of jobs from nightmare island would only get filled by people who were forced into it. And before you point to WW2 as an example, the nazi's were only like that because they truly thought the jews were evil and the source of all their problems. The children in this series are just normal children with the misfortune of ending up on that island. The author seems to literally think that the most enjoyable job in the world is to mutilate children. <<less

A really good book! The start is slow and when considering what rating I was going to give it, I thought it'd be 4.5. Later on, it got better and now I'd rate it 5 stars.

Kinda dark beginning, but it gets brighter. The enemies never stop dying haha. The MC is still an ruthless unruly dude with some soft spots though. He's pretty OP among his level. Also, I really like all of his soul pets. The author has good taste!

Maybe the soul pet descriptions (appearance-wise) are kinda lacking. It... more>> kinda gives some leeway for readers to imagine it however they want though. The villains are kinda lame too. Only 1??? is interesting enough to not be flat. Well, we are just starting the first 200 chapters...

I couldn't help comparing it to Pokemon. I'm sorry. Some elements are kinda similar (one ability is Extreme Speed lol It's a common name, but still) and there were moments where I imagined moments from the Pokemon anime too. Evolution is always fun.

Romance hasn't really gone anywhere. If the MC wanted, he could've started a harem. He didn't. He has interest in a girl, but he hasn't done anything with her seriously.

Spoiler

Just 'kidnapped' her lol

[collapse]

MC's family situation is interesting. Dad seems epic. Hasn't really shown up yet though. Mom is mysterious. Actually, his dad's background is also kinda confusing and mysterious. The family MC grew up with is in a bad state, but

Spoiler

obviously the MC saved everyone while ruthlessly stamping on the enemy.

[collapse]

The hype is starting to build and I can't wait for more chapters. :D We're not really anywhere close to the finish though. We're probably not even halfway for MC's special soul pet's evolution path.

Still no best (human) bud though. MC's all alone and emo on his path to power. I really want a friend to rival him a bit. It might be too hard for the author to develop two OP dudes... shame. <<less

First thing that comes to my mind when reading this is "Pokemon"

But it clearly is more than the childhood anime that we all know. It is written to target more mature audience.

The story have the common martial arts genre of level and rank for human, and also their "pets" as such it might be a little confusing at times. However, the story is captivating enough to keep me rooted.

This novel has meh execution but a great idea. It can be entertaining at times, but also cringy as shit.

There are myriad problems in this that I'm too lazy to expand on, so here's a list

    • 1 dimensional villains (I know a review before tried to refute this, but there core personalities of 80% of the villains in this are exactly the same)
        • They all have pretty much the exact same reactions too
    • Weird plot structure (The time skip takes out all catharsis for the reader)
    • Weird portrayal of women, though this is common in most xianxia novels so I didn't factor this in too much
    • MC tries too hard to act cool.
And the author has everyone constantly praise the MC as well, which only adds to him trying to act cool.

I will say this: on the whole, it's an entertaining read. If you have nothing better to read and can ignore some defects of the story, it can kill a few hours.

I give 5 star because I fall in love with Mo Xie and I want it for myself

Plus: Very interesting story, cute and interesting relationship between MC and his pet,

Minus: Gore, revenge-fest story, lots of new glossary that you have to remember

THIS IS JUST AMAZING. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS. SERIOUSLY YOU GUYS, READ IT.

This is like Pokemon x Hunger Games. The variety of Pokemon/Companionship + Survival Game/Brutality.

We have many pets from plant, ice, fire, lightning, darkness... etc. Some areweak, good, strong, commander ranked, monarch ranked, and even some ancient/legendary/godly beasts, with many unique abilities. The pets can evolve and possess many skills, so you have to fight smart.

You have phases/stages for pets. Phases come first, then stages. For example, a second phase, third stage Yo Me beast is weaker than... more>> a fourth phase, first stage Ice Falcon. A fifth phase, fourth stage Multi Colored Devil Tiger is stronger than a third phase, ninth stage Demon Plant.

Our M/C Chu Mu starts off as the useless son of the clan master, in the Chu family. His name is Chu Mu. We learn that Chu Mu had a soul pet, but because his soul pet ran away, he can't summon it, and now one of his soul pet spots that should have a pet, is left vacant forever. This means when other people can summon 3 soul pets at his level, he can only summon 2 pets, due to that soul vacancy.

We learn that someone from the Yang family wanted to kill him. However, this assassin didn't kill him, but kidnapped him and sent him to a group of islands called Nightmare Island. We learn that he is on Cyan Nightmare Island.

Cyan Nightmare Island has a few hundred children on it, who have to survive or face death if they fail. Over 95% of the children have an already strong soul pet, but they are not strong enough to summon it. All the kids received a Cyan Nightmare (wolf type) pet. It eats a large amount of soul force everyday and if they fail to feed it once, they will die. Some even have a Blue Nightmare (one rank above Cyan) and our M/C has the Monarch ranked White Nightmare, so it eats even more soul force than the others.

Since the children can't even summon their cyans to fight, they are stuck using other pets that they capture on the island, which furthers their soul consumption. We have constant battles, reducing the numbers until only 10 can leave the Cyan Island.

Our M/C has a Moonlight Fox pet. At first, she is not strong at all, but he discovers that this soul pet is actually a rare mutating pet. He found her when he was in a tree, camping out, trying to find a soul pet for the upcoming battle.

The fox would come back to the food trap, but each time, it would be a different fox. Sometimes it'd be the Moonlight Fox, sometimes it would be the Silver Fox, or the Fire Fox.

Our M/C captures the cute fox, names her Mo Xie and as they battle, she eventually transforms after eating a fire soul crystal, (he wants her to be fire based due to its strong offense) turning into the Six Tailed Demon Fox (she is at the fifth phase now). He is now off of the remote island after surviving for a year on Cyan Island.

Spoiler

It has been four years since he was captured. He spent one year on the Cyan Island and due to his potential, the person that kidnapped him, took him to a place called Prison Island. This is a place where 3000 people fight to the death daily, with insane creatures as well, and only 1 person walks off of the island alive after fighting for 3 whole years!

Our M/C also obtains an ancient egg. How did he get it? Well, he had this little insect bug (was not his soul pet) that would follow him around, and this turned out to be an ancient soul pet. At the start of the island arc, it would alert him to dangers and it ended up going in a cocoon for 3 years. Nearing the end of the island arc, it transformed into a legendary cyan dragon! At the very end of the prison island arc, we see this dragon battling an even scarier soul pet, some godly purple/red bird creature in the sky.

This was a god creature that Chu Mu first saw when he arrived here. The god bird/dragon fight is a very good fight but neither pet wins. One of the major guilds spots the dragon and realizes it is the ancient cyan dragon that they were looking for, so they try to capture it because they know it has an egg. The dragon obviously escapes lol

So, our M/C puts the egg away, knowing one day it'll hatch into some legendary pet. Chu Mu is the sole survivor, deemed King of Prison Island and he gets invited to the Nightmare Palace. Due to his strength, he easily defeats one of the royal, c*cky princes with his weakest pet. Chu Mu tells the prince that he is weak, since where he came from, the thousands of contestants were much stronger, so this was not even a battle to him.

The person that kidnapped him becomes his somewhat mentor (he wants to surpass him/kind of kill him as well one day lol)

So, he makes Chu Mu the nightmare prince, (there is a pretty strong princess who also has a white nightmare soul pet to feed) The Nightmare Prince is a very high societal position. Each major region has a nightmare prince. It's a rank 7 position, the highest he can get for his age. Even the few palace kings can't do much besides secret plots to kill. The highest position rank is rank 9 overall.

Okay so right now, our Chu Mu went to see his family after four years of missing them. He tells them he was kidnapped and escape and he just got stronger somehow. He wants to keep his identity a secret right now.

We are in the tournament arc, a competition called "Recommendation" This determines your status/resources, so the Chu family has to win, they were already on the decline. This is a fight between the four main families. Chu, Yang, Qui and Zhou family.

This is a 5 vs 5 battle, where one person battles at a time, and you can only use two soul pets to battle.

The Chu family just defeated the entire Zhou family with Chu Mu beating three people himself, and the Qui family took 3rd place.

The audience was at first, laughing at Chu Mu, because they remembered he was tr*sh, but he came back and just destroyed the Zhou family (even killed one of the Zhou sons) so now everyone is wondering how some kid who lost a soul pet, came back so strong after 4 years. They think the Chu family hid Chu Mu and secretly trained him lol.

FINALS ARE HERE. He is now fighting his first opponent in the finals, someone from the Yang family. This person is also the one who hired the assassin to kill him four years ago, so yeah, things are heating up. Also, no one but his few secret nightmare place rank 3 servants know of his true identity, the nightmare prince/King of Prison Island.

Chinese Pokemon in a ruthless Cultivation world, is the easiest way to describe this fairly unique WN. But being Xuanhuan at heart, it follows the usual motions. A clan on the decline, several slaughtering arcs, the MC Chu Mu's incessant desire to get stronger, his acquisition of a unique strength and arrogant a**holes lining up to die, or worse... to lose some face. It is really the Soul Pet's development, combat style and Chu Mu's uncanny yet highly adaptable attitude keeping me engaged through all the nonsense.

Nonsense like how arbitrary... more>> the Power Levels & the Value of Money becomes, even though I do welcome the thought of this form of cultivation being prohibitively expensive, but only in a way that makes sense. Unfortunately there are no surprises to be found here, as the Spoilerific Chapter Titles and story narration in general leaves nothing to the imagination. Which makes it more annoying how characters unnaturally withhold information, for later reveals that are in the chapter titles. One such reveal being the big messy elephant in the room known as "Heavenly Palace". Thankfully the author kept the romance tasteful & simple, neither did he name the Soul Pets "Little White/Blue/Green". <<less

Interesting premise but the problem becomes the Pokemon battle which are, fundamentally, unrealistic in the context of the novel. You have a giant vs dragon with 2 soul trainers. Dragon bashes 10km giant away. Obvious move is get the dragon to squish the soul trainer. Instead, dragon has to confront giant. So it is like the pets "MUST" defeat pets instead of just killing the trainer. There are a few times where the obvious "bad guy" does this but the "good guys" just seem committed to killing pet after pet... more>> rather than the obvious strategy of killing the trainer. Sure the novel has to last 1000+ chapters but the author has a tough hill to climb making the rather silly battles make sense.

This makes most of the later battles a bit nonsensical. Half devil transformation gives the trainer movement and killing speed - which Chu Mu apparently NEVER thinks to use to directly kill the opposing trainer. The author starts the earlier part of the novel by discussing armor for the trainer but by the latter half of the novel, the armor seems meaningless. Chu Mu could simply go "assassin mode" and kill off all the leaders of the enemies without bothering to confront the faction war/politics and the various pets. His body was already at a higher rank and could conceal himself so why bother with the "big battle on the field".

Also suffers a bit from secondary character nerfing especially the females but that is pretty much par for these kind of novels. Mu Mingyi was the ultimate strength character that quickly became the "worried" background female advising him to "be cautious", etc. So the so-called WAR GODDESS becomes the powerless "girlfriend". <<less

I found it really interesting at the beginning. The premise was new to me and I really enjoyed reading it up until a certain point when the battles became all about the “species rank” and everything just went downhill from there. The one thing that really pisses me off however is the romance.
Spoiler

I liked Chu Mu’s fidelity in this and thought it wouldn’t be some garbage harem, however I was absolutely wrong. Why does the kid you literally raised like you and make moves on you. Absolutely no logic there. Literal absolute garbage.

The story is kind of a mixture of Pokemon and soul cultivation technique as it depends on your soul level how many soul pets you can have and how many you can summon at the same time. At the beginning it a kind of revenge story as the first soul pet of the MC left him thus preventing him from getting stronger and him trying to get his first soul pet back. The MC matures through the story and it is nice to read as he changes very much through... more>> the whole story thus changing the flow. At the same time it is ridiculous as it too much because of price and such stuff. Many things do not make really sense as these things don't appear to thought out well or not executed, leaving the reader kind of confused. <<less

What an amazing start to this novel, you have dark gritty pokemon battles and side cultivation battles for the trainer with fights where people actually attack the trainer because if you kill the trainer, then you win the fight. The first arc was amazing and you were truly worried for MC's safety and if he was gonna survive with his "weak" pokemon.

The next couple arcs definitely dropped in quality but there were still some amazing fights and smart moves from MC which made me continue to read this novel. I... more>> wanted to see him get more pets, more special moves, evolve his pets, etc. The mystery of MCs soul slot and disadvantages he was playing with was also pretty fun, because he was perpetually the underdog in fights but he wins because of his smarts as a trainer and good pokemon. The plot progression was linear and nothing special, but pleasant to read (MC arrives in location --> fights for resources --> upgrades/evolves his pets --> moves to new location where he is broke and obtains a new pet or resources).

However, the quality severely begins to drop and continues to drop after a couple of hundred chapters in and most of the things I loved about this novel no longer exist. No one attacks the trainer anymore, its literally pet v pet. Villains become arrogant and pathetic, no more smart villain that existed in the first arc. LITERALLY every single person is arrogant except for MC's friends. Some pets are forgotten/not used in certain arcs. Truly an alarming amount of Deus Ex Machina parts (like MCs pet evolving right before he is gonna die --> its pokemon, I understand that stuff happens but when it occurs like 3 or more times, then it gets annoying. Also when
Spoiler

MC loses control and turns into his half-nightmare form

[collapse]
)

The biggest thing I was let down on is that type effectiveness no longer matters in the later chapters. You have one plant/wood/charm type sentient human-like pokemon that is like 2-3 cultivation levels higher than everyone else along with other people fighting it and they cannot defeat it. Imagine a lvl 100 Venusaur fighting against ~10-12 lvl 70-80 pokemons ALL AT ONCE (and many of them are fire type btw) and the Venusaur absolutely recks them all without taking ANY damage. Only the MC can subdue it and save the day.

All side characters become irrelevant in the later chapters, only MC, his pets, and a few of his friends can defeat the enemies. The romance/relationship in the later chapters and some of the fights were somewhat enjoyable to read but everything else became disappointing so I dropped it. I know I'm being harsh on it, but that's because I truly enjoyed it and sad at what it became. Overall, its not a bad novel, the first hundred chapters are great and if you don't mind the drop in quality, give it a try. <<less

I am one of some people that rarely finish a web-novel. But I really like this novel. Is good, not perfect but good.

The story is fine. Its different and refreshing.

The setting is also good. It is cultivation with pokemon type of setting.

... more>> The secondaries characters development is also good, but not enough to be honest. But you will really care about the main character.

The romance was fine, but not the main point of the story.

And lastly is the ending... It's bittersweet. Like you desire more but is the last chapter. It is a happy ending, but at the same time is not, because it finish like there is still hope, but we the readers will not know. It did not give resolution to the characters. Like an Open Ending.

But overall, it is a good web-novel to read. <<less

This novel is very overrated. I could not read more that 39 chapters and I really doubt if this novel gets better later on.
Worst thing about this novel is it's repetitiveness.
Spoiler

basically it is going like this:

1 drop main character in wilderness

2 some fights and time skip
3 duel some minor character

and back to point 1

[collapse]

Lvling up pets and cultivation is not interesting as well. Cultivators, pets, abilities have so many lvls and stages of lvls etc etc that it is really hard to keep up.

I don't like fights in this novel as well. It is limited mostly to something like: Pet A used ability B it is super effective. It doesn't feel like author narrate novel but like he summarizes his game experience.

I read only 39 chapters but I highly don't recommend this novel up to this point.

Overall, this is just a pretty good novel.

The premise is very unique, the characters and plot are pretty basic, and the world building is a bit messy. Translation quality is not the best either, but the main villain for the first 1000 chapters or so is pretty insane (insane good). And also according to the TOC on Wuxiaworld, book 1 has 114 chapters and the book 2 is literally the rest of the novel (1600-1700 chapters?) There are also some holes in the logic of the premise of the novel.

Spoiler

I don't think the author ever clearly explained what happens to soul pets that are not called out when a trainer dies, or at least not in the first 1350 chapters. Where do they go? They don't come back out into the world, or else people would be harvesting crystals and cores off of them once they come back out. I feel like this would be a very important question that needs an answer for any soul pet that is thinking about attaching itself to a trainer. I feel like this type of loophole should be clarified early on, not just left there.

[collapse]

However. HOWEVER.

The game-changer that makes this novel deserving of a 5 star are a few defining moments that shine so bright they glow up the entire novel.

Spoiler

I think one really good example of this is when little Mo Ye sacrifices himself in the centipede cave. Absolute CHAD move and hella respect for Mo Ye.

[collapse]

Although it might seem tedious to go through a thousand something chapters for these moments, I feel like once you hit the first one the entire novel gets much more enjoyable and the characters will grow on you. Even if they don't hit as hard for you, they will definitely wipe away any regret you had for picking up this novel. <<less

A novel worth reading. The story is exciting and the MC is to my liking. He is witty and determined. The world background was awesome. Some people compared it to P*k*m*n or saying that it's a P*k *m *n knockoff but I could only say they are different in a sense that P*k*m*n lacks depth and sense to it.

In this novel, their soul pets and the Masters would die if they are careless. Every battle is important and dangerous. Every pet is unique especially mutated ones. And Stages are respected.... more>> Unlike some 2nd evolved yellow mouse defeating a 3rd evolved monster.

The only downside of this novel is the "Translation". It's not like your reading a machine translated novel. It's just that it lacks proof reading.

There was a character named Ting Yu, then after 3-7 chapters, it was changed to Ding Yu. Then Ding Yu was gone and here comes Ting Yu again. Then, there are some ungrammatical sentences from time to time and some repeated words like "more more". I think it was between ch.35-45, another example was when he was refining the soul crystal, the math was wrong, hayzzz.

Well, it only suffers from poor translation. Aside from that, everything is good. <<less

Ehh... When author decided to write about pockemons in this brutal style, he forgot about basis of kind pockemons - when original pockemons trainers fight they have goal to defeat enemy monster, not the trainer (it's like a sport). But in this novels trainers have goal to kill enemy, they use soul beasts for it. That makes impossible fights like in original pokemons, but it happens. And reader just think of every trainer in this novel that they just ret*rds... Who will make fast beast fight with slow but hard,... more>> enemy monster and not the enemy trainer? I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a team building type wuxia / xianxia. Unlike most novels of this type, the protagonist, while still OP, is not ridiculously callous and self-centered but instead seems to care more about his soul pets than his own ambitions and well-being; this, paired with the fact that the protagonist doesn't act like an all-powerful, arrogant, or pe*verted a**, is rather refreshing. Another positive note is that although the novel contains many beautiful harem candidates, only one of them so far seems to... more>> hold any actual weight plot-wise; which, hopefully, means this novel has a slow romance opposed to a pointless harem.

There are certainly faults with the novel, the most glaring of which being the long, drawn-out, and often far too literal names given to the exotic creatures. I wouldn't mind so much if these names were just briefly mentioned in passing but, unfortunately, they are repeated constantly and usually back-to-back. It makes battles much less interesting to read because it breaks the flow of the narrative. Sometimes it's not so bad, but occasionally you get unintentional tongue twisters like this:

Spoiler

"The Purple Robed Dream Beast had long been staring at the Purple Senluo. When the thunder came, the Purple Robed Dream Beast's dream horn flashed with a purple lightning arc, and almost at the same instant when the three thunders touched Chu Mu's Ice Air Fairy, the three thunders suddenly disappeared into thin air!"

[collapse]

Overall, the plot is like a dark and gritty pokemon adventure where you're not quite sure where it's going but the journey itself is entertaining and fun to watch.

As a side note: I would like to mention that the translator is becoming less and less reliable as time goes on. There are only 1, 806 chapters in this novel - each chapter averaging around 2, 000 words or 4 pages. At the time of this review the translator has released 552 chapters total and is on pace to complete 200 chapters for the year. At his current rate of translation, it will take 6 years 10 and a half months for him to finish translating; and that is assuming the pace doesn't decrease below 200 chapters a year. If this novel's premise really interests you but you wouldn't consider yourself a patient reader then I would not bother getting hooked only to later lose interest due to slow translating speed.

Hope this review helped! <<less

Props to this author for an innovative and well-developed concept! Sure, it partly resembles Pokemon, but this story most definitely stands on its own as an original piece of work. Honestly, the characterisation and world-buildilng was so solid I forgot that it was all pulled out from one person's brain! The constant action between soul pets is entertaining, plus there's bits of foreshadowing and backstory that really make the MC and side characters 'come alive'.

However, a small heads-up: no glory should come without hardship, and the MC's path is paved... more>> with blood. The author doesn't try to disguise things like mu*der, and I personally like the fact that there is no moral highground. The MC has his own life and aspirations, some achieved through less than ethical means, but you'll be rooting for him anyway.

There were some things that threw me off - for example, supposedly 'difficult' tasks that were made way too easy for the MC. I mean, the author did a good job of showing off his battle skills and ability as a soul pet trainer, but the OPness dial was just turned up too high.

In the end, I'm dropping this novel mostly due to repetitive fighting scenes (because there's only so many ways to describe the same pet's appearance time after time), and the initial "charm" of the story was gradually lost on me. However, this is still a very promising read so I recommend giving it a try! <<less

Original Review written at c233 and left unedited at the bottom (below the line).

The novel started off feeling very fresh and had lots of good momentum with it's dark re-imagining of Pokemon. Unfortunately, as the story has progressed it's become more mired in the cliches of webnovels and lost a good amount of it's luster. I think the biggest problem it suffers from is the author's uncertain power scaling and lack of planning out of the story. This obviously hurts the story because he is forced to address and try... more>> and close those plot-lines at a detriment to the pacing, or leaves things obviously unexplained because he probably hasn't thought it out yet (which gets me a little scared of how the author will try and end the story).
Spoiler

Seriously, I still don't understand the Battle of the Realms format, and I think the author doesn't either.

[collapse]

While it does become a bit of a generic xianxia, the Pokemon spin is a definite strength and hook to keep me reading, but my rating does drop from a 5 to a 4 after the first maybe 200 chapters.

Not a perfect novel, but I think it's really good. It draws you in by presenting itself as a pokemon knock-off, but that's not all it is. I think it does a good job blending the ideas of pokemon with the traditional xianxia setting. It doesn't use the xianxia cliches as crutches for its story and instead really aims for a gritty setting. It suffers from two main problems. First, the side characters are mostly disposable and largely lack depth. This also hurts the development of the MC in my eyes. The author does acknowledge this once, but I don't think that rectifies the problem. It also can make the story dull at times because there isn't anybody else around. Second, the fighting and power scaling is a bit BS. Sure the author gives some numbers, but I don't the author does a good job sticking to his established rules and so the fighting can see chaotic as a result. The beginning is very good, but I'm not sure if it can recapture the magic at this point, but that also might be because I'm in a bit of lull in the story rn. Even then, it's still a good novel for its premise alone. It's like a good BTTH combined with pokemon minus the cliches and the excessive filler. <<less
