I'm compelled to write this review after my second read of the book, now that its available in NovelUpdates finally. It is beautifully translated into English by WayEast, with marvelous and naturally flowing literature. The Blue Whisper is one of the most beautiful fantasies I've ever come across. Tragically beautiful. Romantically powerful. It contains a unique setting of fantasy elements marveling with demons, demon masters, magic powers which sets the story of a fateful encounter of a powerful, intelligent & kind demon master Ji Yun He, who pursues freedom all... more>> throughout her life and an innocent, honest and sincere Merman, Chang Yi, who's been selfishly torn apart from his world of freedom, the sea and imprisoned in the human world.

Fate besets Ji Yun He with the harshest of adversities and pains, emotionally and physically draining her, constantly taking away her freedom, leaving her as a pawn in the hands of power, but she is undaunted and unyielding, facing the cruelty with a fearless smile and fighting for freedom.
"Freedom is not the power to go anywhere you want. But freedom is the power to decide for yourself." - Ji Yun He

Chang Yi has lost his world of the vast sea but Ji Yun He becomes his world. They are the only light of their cruel lives. Their romance is tenderly sweet and innocently passionate at the same time. Their persistence in protecting each other at the cost of themselves and sacrificing their own freedom, which is the most important thing to them, for each other unconditionally and selflessly is the most beautiful part of the story.
"Nothing in the world is an unwarranted good or unexplained evil"- this fact is highlighted in the background of each character's action, reflection and motivation.

The Blue Whisper felt like an enchanting fairy tale that cast a wondrous spell upon me, just as magical as, all beautiful fairy tales ever told in the world. <<less

A good story with good characters that I binge-read in two days! Although it’s not one of my favorite Jiu Lu Fei Xiang novels it’s still an engaging read that can get very addicting. The first half was stronger than the second half (a pattern that seems to happen in JLFX novels) and set an interesting foundation for the rest of the story. There’s a sense of melancholy throughout the novel so while there’s spots of humor here and there overall you feel an overarching sadness to the story.

Our... more>> heroine Ji Yunhe is powerful and strong-willed who’s biggest desire is freedom. She’s one of the best and most powerful demon masters but she’s still trapped in her home of the Demon Valley. Overall she’s a very active protagonist who is always thinking up a plan or of a way out. Yunhe is immediately likeable and the audience can really sympathize with her and understand her, however, she does have some noble idiocy that made me slightly annoyed even though her thought process was laid out. Buuuut she somehow made headpat/headrubs cute to me (I usually find this trope annoying haha) so bonus points for her!

Male lead Changyi is a jiaoren (Western equivalent would be a mermaid) so it’s interesting seeing how he learns and grows as he stays in the human world and continues to interact with humans and our complicated feelings and relationships. Dude really has it rough throughout the whole novel, although everyone has it rough in this story rip. His cluelessness and earnest demeanor is endearing at the beginning and his dynamic with Yunhe is funny and touching in the earlier chapters.

The relationship between the main couple does develop very fast, especially Changyi who falls very fast for Yunhe. If there was some more development and time with them then the relationship would’ve risen to the next level. While their relationship in the latter half of the book was weaker imo, they do make a power couple, lack of communication and all XD

The side characters were also pretty well written. Shoutout to Lin Haoqing, sort-of adopted brother to Ji Yunhe and the heir to the Demon Valley. He’s developed well so that even when he acts in cruel ways readers can still find him sympathetic. Seeing how his relationship with Yunhe changed throughout the novel was pretty unique and interesting to read.

Spoiler

It was pretty heartbreaking to see their relationship shatter in the past all because of Lin Canglan, who probably wins the award for worst father. The part of the novel when both JYH and LHQ both realize that they’ve changed from the cruelty of their childhood and can’t go back was very sad TAT. Which is why I’m very glad Lin Haoqing was decisive and went through with killing his dad XD. Also very glad the novel didn’t go down the he secretly loved Yunhe route because that would’ve been a disservice to their complicated relationship.

Another plus is the sisterhood between most of the female characters! Women supporting women is always very appreciated and can be rare to see so YAY! (ノ◕ヮ◕) ノ*:・゚✧ For the villains, Princess Shunde was very hateable while also slightly pitiful. I could tell the author wanted us to feel bad for her later on, however, it was a bit late at that point and she really is such a horrendous person. The same went for the Grandmaster with the too little too late in making him a more rounded villain. They put up a good fight against the protagonists in the story, but probably aren’t the most memorable villains out there. I think this kind of ties into one of the problems with a lot of the characters in The Blue Whisper where the author laid out their motives/thought processes but you couldn’t quite get behind their decisions and why they acted the way they did.

Spoiler

I need JLFX protagonists to please stop dying and rebirthing the trauma I’m getting from this pattern lmao

[collapse]

Thank you Jiu Lu Fei Xiang for yet another solid work!! Can always count on you for a good female protagonist ;) !! Thank you so much Way East for an amazing translation you all are so very talented with words~♡ (。- ω -) <<less

the ultimate master and the grandmaster.

The former who raised the grandmaster who went all crazy & made other people suffer for their ideals/actions, told the MC to tell the phoenix to go after the grandmaster which just got her killed off screen (really cheap honestly), basically undid the immortal seal in the grandmaster to kill him to only have his power absorbed by a crazy b*tch, and all she has to say to our mc? "Welp I did my part I have no juice anymore. She's gonna be a massive bit*h of a problem. Better deal with that MC, see ya bye" I'm mocking and paraphrasing...

The latter raised a crazy bit*h aka the princess who tortured demons and civilians, became heartless & created crazy disciples who did sh*t to ppl like the MC or made the issues worse, killed a love story of his "friend's" just bc he could idk they never explained, made the crazy bit*h more dangerous for funz, and got his power s**ked bc he finally got closure bc he got to talk to the love of his life again (the og master) and wants to die. I mean the only good thing is that due to this change of heart, he healed the ML in the end buttttttt whatever dude.

so no worries. The writing is good I say, but the writing is old like very hmm heavy taste. Continuous use of withholding information for dramatic effect and plot to encounter tragedy or heartache which just makes it feel too heavy the whole time. It's a very heavy taste like over flavored thick broth of a plot that you trudge through. You know it's good but eating too much of it may not be your taste. It's like that kind of feeling. At some point it gets too predictable too.

I think the best part of this novel is all of the female side characters. This is not my taste, but I respect the concept. <<less

I always adore the protagonists of every Jia Lu Fei Xiang’s novels and I think that Ji Yunhe is not an exception.

“I resist, persist and fight back because I want to make myself worthy of every flower I’ve enjoyed and every bite of food I’ve tasted. I want to live, and I want to live happy and free!”

Our little protagonist’s deepest dreams and desire is to live a life of freedom. All of her life was spent in captivity, and of those captors, the majority consisting of men including the ML himself. I think the author does a great job at introducing Yunhe and making the readers feel for her longing.

Note: Spoilers in the remaining part of my review

Spoiler

I find that Yunhe’s longing for freedom is what drives her instant attraction to Chang Yi. In her mind, he embodies a “beautiful story” that humans aspire to be but are not and the manifestation of what it means to be “free.”

Now, Yunhe’s definition of “freedom” changes two - three times over the course of the novel. At first, “freedom” meant being able to go outside the valley and experience the world. The second, it meant being able to live a life “without fear.” The third being her resolution to stay by Chang Yi’s side as his life-long companion and lover—freedom of being able to “decide” for herself. In the end, Chang Yi, being the manifestation of freedom that she believes him to be, ultimately becomes her “freedom.” Her longing for “freedom” was also a yearning for Chang Yi’s heart. In thinking this way, the novel becomes more profoundly beautiful.

[collapse]

In conclusion, this is a great read! Lots of themes related to freedom and imprisonment. I give this a 4/5 because I do feel that the end was lacking... Definitely not as strong as it was at the start.

This is an amazing fantasy. In a world of demons and demon masters the tendrils of the past cling onto almost every villain blighting the world with their various pains. Our central MC is clever and independent. But she's trapped in machinations not of her own design. Enter the ML. A true fish out of water with no skin in the great game destroying the human world. Their connection and the madness of various villains distorts and buckles his once innocent noble character.

Our Leads go through a lot of painful... more>> trials in this story. At moments the sweetness of their connection is weighed down by a toxic level of hate. Its almost too much to get through. Power through if you can. Our heroes are sweet, funny, mischievous, stalwart and kind. Their world is diverse and sublime. The secondary characters have quit a bit of depth and many evolve through their own epic arcs. My only criticism is some backstories and situations are told to us so quickly I nearly got whiplash. But that did not detract from my enjoyment of this adventure.

Highly recommend to anyone on the look out for a romantic fantasy adventure to save the soul of humanity. <<less

This was very well written and the english translations are superb. The story was good but it was not my cup of tea.

The continuous strife created by the FL lasts too long and becomes exhausting and monotonous towards the end.

I don't like this FL for this ml.:

Spoiler

She over-complicates almost everything instead of just being honest. She continuously makes too many bad choices that end up being detrimental to herself as well as the ml. She can't sit still and enjoy mls' company. Underwater she could barely wait the 3 days to heal. Afterwards, she knew of his freezing condition but still chose to separate from him and go work at the border instead of regulating that task to one of the other 10, 000 people available. If that plant cure didn't appear when it did then she would have robbed him of precious moments he could have had and wanted before his end.

[collapse]

The parts that are good between the FL and ML are really good. But there are not many of them. And the parts that are bad between the FL and ML are really bad; even more bad than the parts that are good and there are too many of them.

This story takes complexities and makes them even more complex. If that's your thing, then this story is for you.

I can't really say I regret reading this because the jiaoren (merman) was really majestic and pure, but I could have done without it. I suppose it's worth reading at least once.

Also, this story is tagged as a tragedy but it has a happy ending so that tag should be replaced with 'angst' instead. <<less

I wanted to read this novel before the drama adaptation aired and finished the book (total 118 chapters) in two days. This review will be added on to later on.

Spoiler

I really liked the FL of the novel. But she was tortured throughout the book and kept captive various times by different people. It was hard to read. Tbh I have mixed feelings on the ML. In the middle of the book, it kinda felt that he was just being plain cruel and this made me want the FL to die. I know he wanted the FL to live which is why he kept her under his protection (since she did also try to find ways to commit su*cide) but he was being overprotective and the FL was a prisoner again. I did understand why the ML was mad at the FL, she did lie to him and "betrayed him" but she thought her betrayal would lead him back home and also how she was going to die soon anyway so parting him with would be the best and she didn't want the villains to go after him which is why she stabbed him and pushed him off the cliff. I'm glad it was an happy ending but the ending could've been better. I did like the supporting characters. The main villain was okay, her main goal was basically to kill everyone and rule the world.

I think the author overdid the torturous star-crossed lovers thing. As per JLFX novel's, the MC had to die and we painfully had to go through all of that and then resurrect. I find this very unnecessary so even if there was a silver lining after her rebirth, I was just tired and felt emotionally spent after all that we had gone through. In a way, the story was very cliche, with the MC pretending to not love the ML so as protect him and other useless misunderstandings that are so old school; or the ML being so cruel to MC and the bondage was just a bit too much to read at times. Towards the end, there was a lot of deus ex machina by the author just to keep the MC and ML alive e.g., that fight scene with grandmaster and princess. Otherwise, you end loving the characters as you them grow and you keep wishing for them to get out of this torturous cycle but just when you think they are about to, the author circles back again. Honesty, I wish this book just ended with the tragedy part and we stayed there since their romance was so mixed with cruelty that I wondered if they really needed to be together at all. Another reviewer talked about how freedom meant different things to them at different points and I do agree with that but ultimately, is the torture they underwent just to be together really worth it.

The synopsis about demon taming sounds really cool, but the book isn’t that exciting. The whole premise (at least in the beginning) is that she’s trapped around all these cruel people and she can’t leave. She’s the unspoiled one who still cares about her friends and treats the beasts gently. Honestly it’s just kind of cliche; other books have done it before and better. The romance is at least a little cute because the beast is naive, but they end up willing to die for each other really early on... more>> despite having no real emotional connection (also up until chapter 29 I read to there really isn’t romance). Overall I would say don’t waste your time and go find a better book. <<less

Pros :

The relationship between MC and ML is to die for, literally. I have a thing for death regret. They care for each other so much in their on ways.

The ML is fierce but gentle, straightforward and honest. He's just the cutest. The MC and ML are both fighting for their freedom but they need to let go of their love. It's tragicallt beautiful.

The side characters are quite nice. We see some women support women action. We see women taking the initiative in a relationship. Last but not least, we... more>> see a male and female villain at the same time. They're also quite well developed.

Cons :

The angst is kinda too much at the first half but I also feel it's bland after the MC's 'death'. We need more abuse and more regrets, more blood and tears being wasted. Still it's a good read. <<less

The author is a master in writing tender and angsty fantasy romance with a couple that goes though hardships and misunderstandings before having a hard-earned happy ending. This work, however, isn't on the same level of others novels by the author like Heart Protection, so I can't give it 5 stars.

The first half of the novel is the best: the MC and ML meet as a demon master and the demon to tame. Their relationship is explored well and they grow closer slowly but irresistibly. Ji YunHe is a well-rounded... more>> character, a woman who has been restrained all her life, who wishes to escape and have real freedom, only to be beaten down again and again by fate. She takes pity on the mairmaid, Chang Yi, as she sees him as a comrade spirit, a pure god-like creature captured in a cage who refuses to bend his pride. During their journey together, both Chang Yi and Ji YunHe grow and change while around them the world changes too.

The second half gets weaker and more confused as the couple faces various challenges against the villains. The main weakness of the novel is indeed the villain, the princess Shunde who is evil and mad without a reason, she doesn't feel a real person, just a caricature. She does have a bit of background but that doesn't justify how black-hearted and crazy she is.

Spoiler

It would be justifiable if she only hated the Grand Master, but no, she considers all humans like ants, killing whoever she wants indiscriminately

[collapse]

Another problem I felt while reading is a sense of rush with little space given to subplots that should have been explored more. Important events happen off-screen and are summarized in a sentence or side characters who are presented like they are important characters just to have little screen time and then disappear off-screen.

Spoiler

Why don't give more space to the phoenix or tell more details about the cause of the Grand Master's obsession? It is like the author didn't know how to incoporate those parts in the story so she remained vague to the detrimental of the novel

I read the novel after watching the drama (Which I really loved) and after reading the novel, I can honestly say that the novel was much much better. I really wish they followed the novel.

But of course, like the drama this novel isn't perfect, there are many things I would've changed if I was the writer. I would've made more scenes for the innocent jiaoren and JYH so we can see them falling in love more.

I would've shortened JYH's time as GM and Princess Shunde's prisoner. I would've removed... more>> the constant dying and reviving of the MC's

It was good, really good. But I got tired after they announced that Changyi will die or froze... it never ends...I am just glad the ending was different from the drama (Where JYH has to die again)

I probably would've changed the reason for misunderstanding. Like... maybe Changyi will get brainwashed later on, after being told that JYH fooled him and used him to submit freely to Shunde - so she could help LH. But yes, compared to the drama, Chanyi's disbelief, trauma and hate makes more sense.

It's not perfect and there are many scenes that I skipped and just went on straight to Changyi and JYH. I read them again and again and again. I don't know how many times I read it so I'm giving it a perfect score. <<less

Great book and fantastic translation work!
The leads are definitely ‘tortured souls’ - I think they were constantly undergoing some form of hardship from start to end. However still a satisfying plot and romance.
Now I hope the drama adaptation will live up to the book.

The book is terrifyingly heartbreaking but I am still torturing myself to read it because of the writing.
