One day the glaciers melted and the sleeping zombie virus invaded the world, mutating ABO’s to varying degrees.

And Omegas, who have always been weak, became one of the most intractable corpses during those last days of the apocalypse.

In order to obtain first-hand technical information from the outside world, the beta Cheng Jian, who just graduated from the Academia Sinica, was dispatched to the special operations team and became a technical soldier.

Not only does she have to face the more arrogant Alpha teammates while the apocalypse rages around them every day, but even more terrible than that, she has to endure the iceberg-like Squad Captain.

After graduating from military academy, all Cheng Jian wanted was to be a secretary for a young Ph. D doctor in a split officer’s dress!

So why did you send me to kill zombies, then?! All I actually got was a zombie and an even more terrifying boss!

Xu Wei glanced at her coldly, “Stare at me like that again and I’ll throw you off the helicopter.”

Cheng Jian quickly glanced down where countless zombies crowded in the abandoned city, stretching their arms crazily upwards. She withered and defectively thought that her mother shouldn’t have given birth to her.

I am not sure if my standards were too low for the plot of a smut novel, but this book surprised me in a lot of ways. I want to give it a 5, but I’m keeping it a 4 due to some s*xual assault; the novel would have been outright progressive if the author had managed to keep that out of the story. The smut occurs somewhat late due to the ML holding himself back.

spoiler below for the trigger warning (s*xual assault) :

Spoiler

Their first s*xual encounter is the MC forcing herself on the ML, ultimately using his hand to m*sturbate while he just motionlessly stares at her since they are in the middle of a mission. Yes, it is the woman forcing herself on the man. He might have been more willing if it were not for the circumstances.

Their second encounter is much more violent. He was feeling somewhat wronged after the first encounter, but also had some hidden expectations about their future relationship. He came back from a mission to hear rumours about her and another alpha, a researcher. He brushed these off until he found out that one of his team members had set up a date at a bar with the MC. His possessiveness broke out at this point and he usurped the date ultimately violating the MC in the bathroom. He wanted her to feel more responsible for him (revealed much later when he apologizes for his actions), but went too far considering that he even dislocated her jaw and insulted her makeup. He may have fixed her jaw right after, but violence is never the answer.

[collapse]

The initial story is about as expected for this genre. The start is full of stereotypes. You have a very militant male lead. You have a naive female lead. You have an apocalypse degenerating human morals even further than the ‘normal’ omegaverse. These cliches are the basis of the world building. The draw of this story comes when these stereotypes are peeled away to reveal many hidden layers. I will say one thing right away: both the ML and the MC are imperfect. This author created character flaws to drive the narrative and reveal the true conflict. This use of characterisation is the main aspect that adds depth to this story.

The ML’s true personality is somewhere between insightful and awkward when it comes to socialisation. He doesn’t express himself well, but perhaps this is because he is able to understand others deeply even without them saying much. When he talks it’s very to the point. He directly asks the MC what she wants from him. This approach doesn’t work out due to the MC not being very honest with her replies at first. That’s not to say she is entirely to blame; the ML may not have been hiding his desire for her, but he also hadn’t expressed his feelings beyond their limited s*xual encounters. It’s only after much prompting that he learns to actively seek out the MC and reveal his true self to her. He puts a lot of effort into understanding the MC’s needs even if he isn’t always able to fulfil them.

The way the MC presents herself to the readers is as a timid yet smart beta who has spent her life playing it safe. This is mostly true. What she doesn’t realize for a long time is that she is deeply obsessive and paranoid with abandonment issues. The funniest part of this side of her is a kink for calling the ML ‘dad’ in bed which really throws him for a loop at first. The deeper consequence is an MC who is the prototype of the cold obsessed researcher. The author even uses the MC as a narrative mirror to the villains which I found ingenious.

Many novels attempt to present cold and intelligent female leads. A mad genius female lead in denial is a fresh take. The veneer of a smut novel and the occasional time skips allows the reader to underestimate the female lead and easily believe in her self-deceptions.

This false sense of security lasts until the FL is one step from madness and makes some irreversible decisions that will leave her mental state precarious for the rest of the novel. Then the reader is taken into the paranoia of the MC. Is every character really as they seem? Who are the traitors? Even the soft/cute/naive FL turned out to be like this... what about the other seemingly innocent or upright characters??? The novel will even have some horror-esque scenes if the translation (currently finished up to c. 5) can accurately grasp the mood once the story starts going downhill.

The pressures of the apocalypse weigh heavily on every character. It’s very deliberate the few times the author shows safe zones or characters privileged enough to live in peace. The positive examples exist to highlight the negative. This is even more obvious thanks to the story’s perspective: the MC views others with optimism and herself with negativity. She doesn’t look twice at things that do not interest or endanger her. Her biases influence her description of the world and of other characters. It’s the ML who is actually able to look at the world and accept the cruel reality. He gives the MC the courage to risk everything in search of truth.

I am weak to stories that dare to use an unreliable narrator so I rated it a little higher. The book has many mistakes like most smut. The story
may only be 3 stars without a rewrite or serious editing, but I found it an interesting read. <<less

Status: skipped around
Another one of those novels that uses ABO as a sorry excuse for Smut. I skipped around the chapters. First off, there are things that could be said to be good about this novel, which is not much, but there is. The MC does have some decent ideals, making it successfully in society as a beta apparently isn't easy, and the MC does try to fight against social norms (and succeeds). Now to the bad parts. The romance is as disappointing as it can get. Firstly, the first & second Smut scene is basically r*pe.
Spoiler

the f*ck is with the MC and ML? The author uses those Omega something periods to make theC apparently lose her mind and f*ck herself with the ML's hand even though he refuses. The second Smut scene the ML shoves his f*cking d*ck into the MC's throat because apparently he's giving her a taste of what she did to him?

[collapse]

Secondly, the MC apparently calls the ML "loving, so kind, so nice, so generous" and a bunch of adjectives y'all don't need to know, but in reality the ML's just a cold icy piece of r*pey ass.
Spoiler

Puts his d*ck into the MC's omega v*gina thingy even though the MC refuses and doesn't want to get pregnant.

[collapse]
Leaving aside the s*x scenes, the romance itself honestly is just bad. I don't even want to go deep into this. The characters don't have much personality besides being horni, and the little personality they get is really shallow. The writing isn't good, the plot is as generic as it can get for a Apocalypse novel, and the redeeming qualities of this novel that I can personally list is terribly little. I don't know why I read this just to have my eyes burnt by the sheer s*upidity of their romance.

I mtl and drop it half way... Maybe I might pick it up later, wait translated ver.

Ummm I think

FL is really op, mary sue one and she can do too many thing such as Virology, hacker, Weaponry Research etc.

... more>> And I think she act on whim because author writing skill a bit lacking...

She happen to be can do this and that. While she complain, she just beta and intern.

At first author tell us she just plain beta with a good looking still not sweet like omega but later with other view point she look like a big beuty??? Mehhhhh

When ML is shit, make me wonder why he can't talk like human being? Hahaha

I not eat this cp.. But the world setting really interesting.

I hope someone give me more spoiler, should I continue read till end?

Why I drop it? I give you spoiler here

Spoiler

- I don't care if she op but when go to romance she act like shojo manga heroine love to talk in her head and oh no, that man so scary ~ l will stay away from him but if he not run to me so I run to him etc and get abuse/rude then oh no, I like him so I chase after him...

I don't understand why FL like ML and confess to him.

She scared of him at first and she in estrous and jump on him once then she like him just like that... I feel no romance there.....

- author double label or lack of creative?

Compare fl- beta female with omega and love to let FL talk sh*t about omega but later author give this sh*t explanation to FL tell how attractive she is... Bahhhhh

Author love to tell she as beta have talant more than alpha but later get forced to change job because of ML and male alpha senior. Because of this later author writen about how powerful she is/ how she get promoted later I feel she is nothing.

Just obedient girl get her reword...

(Waste my time read many chapters about it)

-The last and most reason, I can't stand read their romance and smut...

FL sell herself cheap give herself to ML then get turn down many time. sorry for her and depressed, I feel hurtful about this.

ML help and protect fl. He seem to like FL but when he interact with FL it turn to be shit.

Like he ask FL many time "what do you want me to do ? Want me to fack you?"

Like this even when FL confess to him....

He force FL to give bj in pub toilet.

Their first time is on street /alley...

He's seem nicer later but 'bc I misunderstood so I cold to you before' plot is nonsense. I don't buy it. He do many disrespect and hurtful so can't stand him...

Smut is still good.

I still want to know more about later plot but I don't like many thing in story. So I hope someone help give review about this story so I know more if it good read one?

This was the first novel that I found about zombies and apocalypse world mingled with smut. So despite not liking ABO novels at all, I still thought it would be an interesting novel.

Sigh... I was so wrong!

First of all, I clearly noticed how I don't like ABO novels at all because I don't like their stratified society.

Spoiler

ABO fiction novels always creates a type of social injustice in my opinion.

Alphas are always the leaders and the strong ones, while the omegas always needs to be submissive and protected.

And we can't even talk about betas... they practically don't have importance at all. They don't react to pheromones and are weak like omegas.

I know that exceptions exist.

For example, I read a novel (The Geeky Girl Alpha's Daily Life After Marriage) which the male omega was a soldier.

While in another novel (An Exile Amid Humanity), the male omega was a leader of a rebel group.

But despite those male omegas being strong, they still were submissive with their female alpha partners. And in the case of the omega rebel leader in the novel 'An Exile Amid Humanity', he was gang r*ped and r*ped several times by alphas because he was an omega. He was used to humiliation until his soul broke. It was a painful ABO story! That's when my ultra dislike with ABO stories began.

Anyway, that same depressive concept is explained in this novel.

For example (spoiler alert)...

Spoiler

Female lead discovered that actually she wasn't a beta, but an omega. When she discovered that, she really got afraid of being r*ped.

Also, later is explained in the novel, that some alpha soldiers can hurt their partners in bed while having s*x sending them to the hospital, because their desires and instincts are too strong.

I'm sorry for all ABO fans. I really admit that I read a couple of ABO novels, but I still can't accept it.

Because what kind of ABO world is this that r*pe, submission and s*xual violence is normal? I think this happens because in my opinion, ABO worlds are related to s*x, dominance-submission and instinct. I'm sorry of my prejudice... but still!

[collapse]
[collapse]

Second of all, I think this novel has various r*pe situations...

Spoiler

First was the reverse r*pe of male lead, the fierce and cold colonel Xu Wei. While the weak beta scientist female lead Cheng Jian was in heat, she sexually assaulted and forced herself on the colonel, forcing him to kinda m*sturbate her.

I don't understand very well about the ABO world. It seems when they are in heat, it's very hard to control their s*xual desire. But is the desire strong enough to r*pe someone? I really don't know...

Second situation, the colonel and male lead Xu Wei drugged the scientist female lead Cheng Jian with aphrodisiacs and cornered her in the bathroom and forced s*x oral on her, violently thrusting hard in her mouth.

This situation was really sad and humiliating, because female lead accepted the r*pe as a payback of her reverse r*pe. So she kinda accepted the situation without blaming him too much.

According to that logic, if someone robbed, the robber should be robbed. If someone kill, the killer should be killed. If someone r*pe, the rapist should be r*ped. No! They deserve to go to jail, that's why we have a justice system!

So we shouldn't agree with him raping her back, r*pe is never right, no matter what!

What was even worse, is that because of all that situation, she got traumatized. That's is clearly stated in the novel. She would sweaty and tremble thinking about the colonel or while seeing him. But somehow she still felt attracted to him! Deciding to follow him in the battlefield. Was that a situation of Stockholm Syndrome? The victim falling in love with the perpetrator?

[collapse]

And third. Argh, I was so embarrassed in the place of female lead and then she got kinda creepy.

Spoiler

Everyone was facing deadly situations. The soldiers fighting to protect humanity. The researchers trying to discover ways to save the world, but all she could think about while on battlefield was how the damn colonel was handsome.

Like, come on! Can you pay more attention to save the world instead of having s*upid thoughts of romance like a teenager?

It looked like she accepted the mission to do field research, not to save humanity, but to accompany her love. Argh, so s*upid! I hate that type of female lead.

Okay, okay. It had times that she was serious about her research. But those situations were really too little when compared with all the time she wasted thinking about the cold, scumbag colonel.

But the female lead got even worse in my opinion.

The author stopped portraying her as a dumb in love, and started depicting her as a madman scientist with dad issues...

Yeah, dad issues because she had an obsession of calling him dad while having s*x.

I don't know, but it didn't look like she was calling him dad as a sexy teasing. She called him dad very seriously. Like he was giving her the dominance and protection of a father while in bed. He even asked if she had an Elektra Complex (it's the psychiatric term of a girl's unconscious s*xual desire for her father).

She was a madman because she was obsessed with research. Using her own body as a test subject and started acting like a madman. She didn't care if her research would bring more chaos, she only wanted to research, research, research.

[collapse]

I'm only giving this novel two stars, because...

Spoiler

In the end, female lead got her redemption.

She kinda became a better person and didn't turn out into a black crazy scientist. Of course with the help of male lead, showing that in the beginning he was a scumbag, but got a lot better in the end.

And in the last chapter the novel tried to convey the injustice of the ABO world. Showing that despite female lead being an omega woman, she still reached the stars and that should inspire the whole ABO society, showing that they can be as powerful and brilliant as male alphas.

This book surprised me. I didn't expect it to be this good. The fact that MC is not a s*upid woman and has to do and be like ML wants to make this book good.
The MC is smart (I still don't understand why she was so dumb at first), she doesn't "love" ML, just the fact that he's strong and can be with her, she doesn't want to be alone and he's the strongest candidate for be with her and protect her.
ML loves her, he just loves everything about her (love at first sight).
I'm still not sure about the end of the war, how it ended: fast and without good exploration. The truth is that you can predict what will happen in the next chapter, but is good to read.
Sorry for the bad English.
