The Adorable Sheep Met The Wolf

Description

This is a world in which the proportion of men and women is seriously out of balance, and it is the woman’s status esteem that bears responsibility for generations. When Yang Mianmian appeared in the wolves, her chubby face and soft temperament let the wolves know that this was a fat and delicious and arbitrarily s*upid sheep.

Four stars for the first 20% of the novel and 2 stars for the rest of it.

At the beginning of the story, it was cute, especially the interactions between the MC and Bai Jiu (one of the MLs) and I really like how it shows MC using her knowledge of the modern world in the past. It's a fluffy story without being empty fluff. There are awesome female characters (that sadly never get mention past the earlier chapters). As the story goes on, the new women that are introduced to... more>> the story are manipulative harpies except for the MC, whose IQ plummets.

After the first 20% of the novel, the focus of the story degenerates to scheming females, an unlikeable fourth ML, and imperial drama from the older generation. It goes from a society ruled by woman to a society where women are figureheads and men hold the real power.

The third and fourth ML like MC because she's not intelligent enough to scheme against them. The relationships between MC, the first ML and second ML is well developed, but third and fourth ML is added just to increase the number of men. It doesn't seem like she's in love with them.

The MC goes from a decisive independent modern woman to an someone who's defined by her relationships with the four ML and so wishy-washy. Author, why?! I'm so disappointed. The story starts off so good.

The rule of having to marry by 25 or the government will assign you a spouse makes it feel like you're stepping into a dystopia, especially the part where you'll be imprisoned if you won't marry. Then, being forced to marry four men by the time you're 30 or once again being imprisoned. Or Bai Jiu's mom, who keeps having children until she's almost at her deathbed in hopes for a daughter.

I'm also disturbed by the implications of a naturally skewed ratio of men and women. If only one woman is born for every nine men, then on average a woman would have to give birth to ten children just to maintain the population*. Even if a woman has the freedom to choose who she marries (the MC is emotionally manipulated into marrying the 3rd and 4th ML. She loses agency of her mind and body), she's still forced into becoming breeding livestock. I wonder what happens to women in the world that are infertile or can't get pregnant or carry a baby to full term.

* This is assuming that women never die during childbirth before they gives birth to daughters, otherwise the remaining women would have to give birth to even more children, which seems more unlikely given the historical setting.

Anyways, I think the first 20% or so of the novel is worth a reading, but I'm disappointed in the direction the author went. <<less

The story starts off great, doctor MC transmigrate into a fantasy world where matriarchy rules and a female having 6 husbands is the norm. The idea is fun right? It is but I am not sure why MC's IQ seems to plunge every couple of chapters. This girl is 25 by the way. Author keeps emphasizing she is a home-body and has never dated, which is why she is inexperienced. I get that.. but, she behaves like a 12 year old who doesn't understand why a guy would kiss her.... more>> Keep in mind, this is a 25 year old year adult who is a doctor in the modern world. That is not inexperience, that is mental ret*rdation. Maybe all her IQ went into her doctor skills. Is this supposed to be endearing? Or is this the author's lousy attempt at comedy?

I am still reading because I am invested in the doctor ML who so far is the most likable person and I am hoping that MC will develop further as a character. But looking at the review from Fuyuneko, I am not optimistic.

By the way, the current translation is frustratingly hard to understand. The translator states that this is a MTL with heavy editing. I appreciate their efforts but I gave up at chapter 3 and decided to take my chances with the raws.

Spoiler

Here's an example in chapter 3 (words in quotations are taken directly from the translation) :

A lady character is asking MC if she is married, MC says no. Lady character continues asking MC "Is there someone waiting in that room?"

MC did not understand what that lady was trying to say. I feel you, MC...I don't understand either.

The sentence in quotation by the way, is the lady asking MC if there is anyone servicing her at home, aka a tongfang or a bed-warmer.

I don't want to be mean to the translator but this term is common knowledge for anyone reading cnovels taking place in ancient china.

EDIT

I have now read up to chapter 174 and I have to say that I am glad I stayed on. MC finally becomes more decisive and more likable. 4th ML has a surprising background and I like that he has some character growth; he is able to put down his pride and ego to admit his wrong doings.

For a polyandry novel, the romantic and smut scenes are quite disappointing in both quantity and in quality. I feel that something is lacking. Author put in a lot of effort to create back stories for each of the ML. We see how 1st and 2nd ML falls in love with MC and vice versa. It is really sweet and amusing to read their interactions and little conflicts. But not for 3rd and 4th ML. They randomly appeared due to some random plot device and then found MC to be so different from other females and suddenly got attached (read: obsessed). MC felt bad for them and through some events, had to accept them. What happened? Obviously the female MC halo kicked in and author needed MC to have 4 love interests according to the weird laws of this world where all females need to have at least 4 husbands by age 30 or face punishment by law. Very contrived. I like the characters but I wished that author spent more time on the romance between MC and the last 2 MLs, like what she did for 1st and 2nd ML. Instead, the focus was on a villain character, villain plotting to kill MC and how MC and her merry band of handsome and rich men face-slapped the villain character.

The latest available chapter is 174 and it doesn't seem like the novel is ending yet so we will see.

Should you read this? If you are bored and want something easy to read with some cute scenes. But definitely not something I will go back to. <<less
