OK lemme all tell you how the story goes: The male MC is very loving, gentle and a good husband to the Female MC. The Female MC seems to avoid his usual antics...... Yeah if you imagined it was that sort of fluffy story, well the plot here says f*ck you.

The Abusive Lover tag doesn't come close to describing the male MC, the promised fluffy novel is not here except we get a female MC misunderstood (somewhat) by the male MC, who tortures the female MC, who might as well... more>> rip her heart and kill her at this point

I don't care how gentle and loving he gets later in the story or even the fact that female MC still seems to one-sidedly love him even after the torture, I just want to see him getting tortured by the worst possible means and get his grandfather killed while the story is at it too. Gah f*ck

Anyway, the chapters are a bit short

Verdict: Interest- 5/5
Plot-0/5
Romance- F*ck you <<less

Yet another story condoning r*pe and domestic violence, where the deluded MC acts as a substitute for the male lead's wife to be near him, enduring endless abuse since the male lead was forced into the marriage by the original wife, but eventually 'winning' his heart through her devotion. Unfortunately no refunds.
Spoiler

The MC Qin Zhi Ai waited 8 years for her high school sweet heart Gu Yu Sheng, whom she went on a single date with and didn't remember her the second time they met, even agreeing to act as a substitute for Liang Dou Kou, a famous actress and the daughter of a family friend who convinced his grandfather to push for their marriage since she and her grandfather had both saved his grandfather's life.

The MC is r*ped, and physically and emotionally abused throughout the marriage since the ML hates the original wife. However her docile character (usual for DV victims), innocent eyes, and the nostalgic feeling he gets from holding her causes him to soften and fall for her.

Before they can understand each other, LDK then returns, crushing the MC's originally low self esteem. After a lot of unnecessary angst solved by day time drama tropes to make everything better (yes, amnesia), they end up together, allowing the ML to spoil her, as per the synopsis.

Aaand... We're done. The first time they met, the guy must have performed miracle surgery to save her family, her dog, and a bus load of orphans after they were all injured in a dramatic gory conflict between drug cartels. I imagine there were explosions. And decapitation. Bullets everywhere. Because otherwise there is no way she could see a man who could treat a human being like this as a good man, especially if this person was supposed to be in a business relationship with him. (Be... more>> my fake wife is still a partnership, after all.) This isn't love, this is Stockholm syndrome.

Original review below:
I have *no* idea what's going on 3 chapters in. Start of story, they're already together with no mention of how, and the relationship is *bad*. If you're looking for the super pamper overbearing husband part, I'd suggest waiting, because it has IN NO WAY reared its fluffy head.
-
8 chapters now, and if some fluffy doesn't happen soon, I'm going to have to drop. Granted, the chapters are short, and there has to be a rock bottom before soaring like a phoenix, but I just don't see why she likes the guy. I mean, there's cold and then there's abusive. A sociopathic killer would be more charming... Plus yandere points <<less

Preface: I read the entire book, including the side stories.
Spoiler

I thought I signed up for mid-tier rollercoaster but then this book turns out to be some gargantuan loop-the-loop thrill ride. This author is a mastermind at playing with your emotions. Be prepared to feel anguish, warmth, giddiness, frustration, sadness, and everything in between. Be prepared to use up all the kleenex in the house. Seriously, I might need to see the doctor about some heart problems.

Don't get me wrong, emotional rollercoasters ain't a bad thing. I love melodramatic. I love a good tearjerker. In fact, it was pretty good at the start. The first ~100 chapters of anguish are worth the next couple hundred chapters of melodrama. In fact, you don't really get a good grasp on this novel til like ~100 chapters in. The tone of the first ~100 chapters and the rest of the book aren't really similar. Once we start seeing Mr. MC's point of view, it gets really good and really starts tugging at my heart strings. I love how balanced it is in sharing both MC and Mr. MC's point of view. Very few romance novels do that.

So you might be asking yourself, "should I read this novel?". All I have to say is, turn back if you are looking for a fluffy romance novel. THIS IS NOT A FLUFFY ROMANCE NOVEL. If A Slight Smile is Slightly Alluring is your golden standard for romance, you've come to the wrong place. I think a lot of the bad reviews and the negative reception are from people who didn't quite understand what kind of book this was.
This novel is for people who like (in no order) :
1. Melodrama: Ye Feiye, the author, is the queen of melodrama. Seriously. I dare you to find me a more melodramatic book. The main couple in the story reach the pinnacle of bubbly romance, only for the bubble to pop. And all this happens 3.5 times. Yes, 3.5 times. So buckle up, as you see love blossom and wither multiple times.

2. Tearjerker: When I read this, I shed tears of deep sorrow, tears from being moved, etc. Basically all sorts of tears. I admit I cry easily. But even the most coldhearted person is guaranteed to sniffle.

3. No filler and excessive descriptions: What other authors might take 2000 chapters to write plot-wise, Ye Feiye does it in 800. For fans of flourishing immaculate descriptions that paint the most vivid imagery, right down to polished cherry oak floorboards and the yellow-breasted warbler perching on the thousand-year-old gingko tree outside, I recommend Charles Dickens and his lengthy writing. This book is about plot and emotion. No droning descriptions about superfluous things.

4. Excellent translation quality: Okay, this one doesn't factor into the novel itself. But I gotta say, StarveCleric does an amazing job translating the novel. Accurate translations. Good, clear writing. What more could you want?

5. Low key, quiet, nice, persistent girl lead: I know the trend nowadays is to have a kick-ass girl lead who can beat the crap out of all who annoy her. If you like that in romance novels, read Hidden Marriage. The MC in this book is quite the opposite, actually. But it's not a bad thing. She silently and persistently loves the male lead and it's incredibly moving. I would sum her up in the phrase "silent caring resolve". If you want a bold female lead, this is definitely not the book for you. Prepare to see MC suffer but hold it in, all in the name of love. And I think that makes the book all the more beautiful. After all, sometimes that's what love is. Yes, love is being caring and affectionate, like in those fluffy romance novels. But love is also unconditional. It persists through thick and thin. It means self-sacrifice, forgiveness, and holding on during the darker times, just to see a glimmer of the light. Through this novel, the female lead shows us that other side.

6. Brash nasty-tempered male lead: Nothing special here. Your typical arrogant CEO who drowns in money and power but not love. I'll just throw in a r*pe warning here, as other reviews have mentioned. Happens a couple times.

7. No love triangle: This romance is pure one-on-one love. Saves you the anguish of wondering who the person is going to get with. The side characters have a love triangle going on, though, but I think it's obvious who is going to end up with who.

8. Happy ending: Despite all the ups and downs, and then some more downs, everything fits right together at the end. The side story has an open ending, but it's roughly 50 chapters and not part of the main story so if you don't like open endings, you can skip it.
My one gripe:
The main character's love story should have ended a bit earlier. There was a perfect moment for it to end, but the author added one last loop-the-loop.

My other minor gripe:
I didn't care about the side characters' romance. Luckily the author tacked it on mostly at the end (chap ~800 to ~1000).

Book outline:
1-800: main characters' story, with snippets of side characters' story
800-1000: side characters' story
1000-1050: Another side character's story.

Other commentary:
This book won No.3 most popular girl's book for 2016.
The author has consistently won multiple top awards.
- No.1 most popular author (female) for 2015
- Most well-liked author (female) for 2014

I give this series a 4 stars rating not because of the plot but the way the author describe the scene and successfully makes me feel the immense pain the MC is going through. Which is.. Painful.
Scarring. TRAUMATIZING.
This story is INTENSE. Nonono that cute cover with a pink color theme didn't suit this series at all, they should add splash of blood in the title and few on the corner. This whole 'romance' thing in the book felt like 'horror' to me.

I must be doing feelings wrong because everyone in this novel seems real in love. I give this story a solid 3 stars. Even though I wanted to roll my eyes most of the time, it wasn't actually a bad read. It got super hammy at parts, and was so full of coincidences it was like watching a soap opera, but it was fairly well written and the characters were more realistic than a lot of other novels, hence why I average it to a 3/5.

Pros:

    1. Interesting some of the time
    2. fairly well written (scene transitions aren't bad and you can actually follow the plot as unnecessarily complex as it is)
    3. Xu Wen Nuan - you find out why circa chapter 830 but, let's just say, she has the reaction we'd except our MC -or any sensible woman, for that matter- to have
Cons:

    1. The overarching romance. It's the type of thing that just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. In the end, I didn't care anymore, I just wanted them to get together and get the hell out of my face.
    2. Honestly, the back story was problematic as well. I mean, seriously, how are there SO many coincidences that force the MC and ML to spin around each other for a decade? Everyone just so happens to... more>> go to school together, MC and the main villain just so happen to look nearly identical (except for aura, whatever the f*** that's supposed to mean) but no one ever notices, MC just so happens to become main villain's stunt double and, for some reason, no one was aware of it, yada yada yada. It's so contrived/hacky that I nearly got a migraine from rolling my eyes. Honestly, the ML is just a dick. I can't even find words to describe how awful he is. Even after he changes I can only remember just how terrible he was. There's really no saving grace for him; all of his "justifications" for how he treated her make him look even worse. At a certain point, I just had to close off all thoughts when it came to the romance because I couldn't logically accept that the MC still wanted to be with him after all that. Soap opera-esque plot developments. A character just so happens to be talking in her sleep during the one instance another character overhears. And in full, coherent sentences? Multiple times?!!! Come on! *eye roll* So... yeah. The main cons are with the story set up while the pros actually have to do with the author's writing. I'd love for her to write something less dramatic, with less of a "gold finger" plot. She didn't mu*der us with flashbacks or confuse the story with too many convoluted timelines, and, most impressively, she introduced new details and/or secrets at proper times that helped move the story along. Ultimately, I'm giving 3 stars because she managed to turn a crappy story readable.

Here's a snapshot of my views on the story as I read through it:

      Spoiler

-Chapter 100: At this point, I'd rather the MC end up with literally anyone except the male lead- even her own brother.

Yes, making him a d*ck to start only makes the gap wider when he's actually nice to her, but it's off balance when he's such a douche that I actively hate the character.

-Chapter 300: I can't stand the MC. I'm not even asking for her to have pride, but can she at least have some self-respect? Love shouldn't be able to overcome everything, especially not the lack of all basic human decency/courtesy. Just hurry up and get them together; it's annoying to have to look at them.

-Chapter 500: God, can't we even pretend she'd end up with anyone else? The author wanted to portray the MC as intelligent but her attitude towards the ML makes her seem more like a dumb puppy who keeps running back to be abused time after time.

-Chapter 800: Whatever. Just stop throwing in these half-assed dramatic interludes to separate them, shut the hell up, and move onto the side characters. I just don't want to see them anymore.

-Chapter 900: *flips tables* I just want to finish it and forget it.

Yet another story proclaiming that if you stick with an abusive person long enough they'll eventually treat you right. Fluffy? cotton candy sweetness? not if you have to be almost mu*dered to get it. This isn't a menso male love story, as someone already said, this is stockholm syndrome.

"Ahh but he realizes he was wrong eventually..." yeah no.... sorry not my cup of tea, hell not my cup of coffee.

To get it out of the way, the description and cover art of this webnovel can be fairly misleading. Supposedly there is romance later on but in the forefront the story is about abuse. The woman has some reasons for enduring it but I dropped this because of how poor the rationalization was.

I don't mind reading about r*pe or abuse. If done well, it presents an intense thriller and relates an emotional tragedy. This however was not done well.

The main character is portrayed as an intelligent, self-driven woman. Every action... more>> disproves this. Under the veneer of an independent woman is a beaten and battered - but still hopeful - housewife. She poses as the fake wife of a man for a sum of money, despite the story going on to mention her successful career moves from then on. The man apparently hates her and shows it through r*pe and abuse.

This is fine. This is fine because our main character met this man once (again, ONCE) at a group meeting. She's in love with the dude off of the basis of a couple glances and half a conversation. Remember though, she's intelligent so somehow, somewhere past than the 34 chapters I read, she will figure out a way to show the man that she is not just a substitute for an inferior actress but the woman he will love with all of his rapist being.

Also it's revealed that he's a horrible abusive rapist because the evil woman got to marry him through political means. Yes. He's a terrible person because of an arranged marriage, but it's okay because everything that is happening points to him being a good person if not for the situation. Totally.

Yes. This is fine. <<less

"cold and harsh attitude" does not even begin to describe how terrible this male lead treats the female lead. I'm sad that the author felt the need to create a male lead like this. At this point, I'm just reading for the female lead's happiness. I want to see her achieve it, but I also wish for the male lead to be crushed beneath her feet, so it's hard to be too into this novel.
Spoiler

I also feel that his actions are completely inexcusable. The author seems to think that by indicating he has been beaten by his father in the past will explain away his r*pes and make us forgive him. But there is simply no *expletive* excuse for r*pe.

I wouldn't recommend this novel to those who have a hard time with villains not getting their just deserts.

Painful story to put it mildly. The main character is repeatedly r*ped, and tortured by her, "husband". Yet she loves him... Truly the only interest and hope I have of reading any further, would be for the guy to experience something mildly hurtful, like castration. That would make this a bit more enjoyable.

Although it's quite painful to read, the story is interesting. At least it makes me want to know what's gonna happen next.

So far, the male lead looks like a despicable villain who treats the female lead like a doormat. Hope there will be some more convincing explanations why he is behaving that way (stories from his point of view). But whatever the reason may be, I think what he has done to her cannot be forgiven.

The translation quality and the release speed are pretty good, kudos to the translator!

So, let me be clear for a few moments. Each stories have their own steps. And this story too. For the first couple of chapter the ML is ROUGH on the MC. But, it's still have a progress.

And, this story is not Fluffy stuff okay? AND all people have a different taste on a story.

So, if you think that this story is bad because you like "fluffy Story". Then don't read it.

From my perspective THIS story is a great story. Okay? If you read it until... more>> the End.

Then you noticed that, there is a progress with the ML and MC.

So PLEASE don't JUDGE too quickly, ok? You all just have to be patience reading it. And probably you might be satisfied with the progress.

The author of this story, creating this story with a lot of time. And the translator translated too. So, I appreciate it. Thank you. <<less

This story should be tagged as a tragedy because it is so fricken tragic that these well-educated, beautiful and kind-hearted women were practically coerced into accepting their abusers/rapists in the name of "love". I kept reading coz I wanted to see these females overcome their toxic situations and move on to bigger and better things, but noooooo it never happened. I only gave it an extra star because I appreciate the translator's effort in providing such superb translations..... but omg, there must really be something up with Ms Ye coz... more>> her stories are just fooked up and disturbing. R.a.p.e should NEVER be excused as a "misunderstanding". A.b.u.s.e should NEVER be accepted as an act of "immaturity". The second female lead was basically st.a. lked for over a year, but that was written-off as "silent protection"... seriously, like what the actual f.u.c.k?! <<less

As far as I have read, I love this novel. The plot is intriguing. I also find the male and female lead interesting characters. I know a lot of people hate the ML and find the MC weak but I've never once felt that way, I wouldn't call the MC weak, she's just far too gentle with the ML and I don't see that as a bad thing. I get there is abuse in this and I don't condone it but the story is still enjoyable and at the end... more>> of every chapter I was keen to know more. No, they have to make her so weak and pitiful and so s*upid for keep receiving the abuse from the ML. Okay guys, this is another novel that can torture you emotionally. This is a very painful story.

FL is head over heels with ML and it's also one-sided. Being in love makes her s*upid that she can't think straight. ML repeatedly r*ped and tortured FL yet she still loves him.

Dear FL, please open your eyes, can't you see he is abusing you? C'mon use your head a lil bit instead of relying on your s*upid love. He doesn't deserve your love.

I did not expect fluff as I've been warned but the male MC who is so violent and abusive turned me off so much and I couldn't continue reading for a while. no matter how docile he becomes later on in the novel, nothing exonerates him of his abusive actions towards the female MC. The only thing that kept me going is the hope that the female MC will have better treatment soon... which was not soon enough. It was just a struggle getting past the initial chapters that I... more>> was tempted to skip. I should've just than that *sigh*

no, it's not my first time reading from this author nor was it my first time reading about a crazy violent male lead who has a traumatic and bitter story. And everytime I read them, I struggled as well.

Somehow the initial chapters of this book just struck me so bad than the ones I've read before. <<less

I have only ever commented if something needs to be said about a particular novel and let me tell you things need to be said about this one. Ok so if you read any review before mine they usually mention two things

    1. The male lead is an ass
    1. That is "gets good" 100 chapters in
I'll address two before one. I've always hated slow starts I shouldn't have to deal with unpleasantries first before getting to enjoyment when I am doing a leisure activity like reading. The beginning is the most important part for me because if I don't enjoy what I see in the beginning I'll just stop reading. Especially 100 chapters in is really stretching it. These first 100 chapters are really something which brings me to point number 1

Spoiler

The male lead has to be one of the most deplorable, abhorrent, and all around disgusting human being I have read about in a book on this site and yes I am including villains too. Granted I don't go out of my way to read novels with tags I find disgusting like r*pe victim becomes lover and hell I was only looking for an unlucky female lead (because god dammit I want to see a relatable female protagonist with flaws) and gave this novel a chance. Which she is rather unlucky and the excuse they have for her to not do anything about the waste of space male lead is because she is disguising herself and self sacrificing in order to get out of debt. That would be fine if they would stop mentioning her fond memories of this as*hole whatever good times she had with this d*ck should be gone. I should probably get to what makes this scumbag so bad. So this stain on the face of the earth's excuse for why he treats his wife so bad is because he's forced to marry her. The girl is in the wrong for abusing her power to force love but that is no excuse for his treatment is the equivalent of punishing speeding with the lethal injection. He r*pes her repeatably, demeans her, leaves her to die among other things. They try and give sympathy points for him with his bad childhood but that's no excuse he deserves no sympathy. However with a heavy sigh I know he'll end up with someone Why? Simply because he's hot and rich and in these novels you can get away with mu*der if your hot and rich enough. Honestly replace his appearance with a sweaty old man and everyone will want him dead. In my idea ending she will find a job to pay the debt and wake up to see the abusive prick the male lead is and she will press charges (not that I practically like the female lead I just hate any abusive relationship) The sh*t male lead will end up in prison will multiple assault and aggravated s*xual assault charges as he is publicly shamed by the press. As for the other girl the cancer actress she can do whatever.
