Overall, a pretty enjoyable read so far, I would recommend it to people who enjoy regression/tower climbing novels.

One thing to take note of is that this novel is basically a lot of pre-existing ideas/tropes under a fresh coat of paint, the setting is basically a D&D/TTRPG inspired version of the ‘tower’ that shows up in so many Korean novels, instead of climbing up different floors, characters go on “adventures” which are a sort of isolated mini plot completely separate from the overarching story, they’re kind of like D&D modules. The... more>> MC’s class is “shadow summoner” which is basically a reskinned necromancer. A lot of the ideas that make up this novel are in a similar vein, twists on pre-existing ideas, which isn’t to say it’s not enjoyable, but more of a “if you’re fed up with these tropes this will quickly become a bit tiring”.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there’s a unique element of the setting that gives the MC a massive advantage, even beyond his pre-existing “meta-knowledge”, I won’t say what it is, however it pretty much guarantees that nobody from earth will be able to rival the MC in the slightest. If you like overpowered MC’s then this is probably fine, but at least for me, it takes away a lot of suspense. As is common with stories like this, it focuses super heavily on the MC and their actions, leaving the world and side characters to feel under developed, as of chapter 49, I have yet to see a single character who sticks around for more than a handful of chapters.

Overall, this is a story that has a unique take on the Korean “tower” novels that plays a little too heavily into the tropes associated with that type of novel to properly explore that uniqueness. The “tower” setting is uniquely suited for a MC-centric approach, where only the things directly around the MC matter, after all, there’s no reason to describe the 20th floor of the tower when the MC has just reached the 5th. By making things more “open-world” and keeping the MC focused worldview it doesn’t really feel all that different. Still a fairly enjoyable read if you can tolerate the lack of characters, but it definitely could’ve been a bit better. <<less

In the beginning I fell in love with this novel. A unique D&D inspired story with a large and intricately connected world, a ruthless protagonist willing to do anything to climb to the peak and take revenge against the gods, and just an overall interesting story but as all things do it declines significantly the more it goes on. This novel has fallen into the classic Prolonged Web Novel Degradation Syndrome category that so many web novels fall into.

Our character changes from a ruthless fellow to a man who has... more>> a multiple paragraph internal dialogue about why killing others is wrong only to then proceed to kill dozens less than 5 chapters later. In particular
Spoiler

there is a scene where our MC has no choice but to take the lives of hundreds of transferees who literally are trying to mu*der him en masse but for no reason he freezes up in the midst of a dire situation and says s*upid sh*t like I know my only option is to kill them but killing them is a line that there is no going back from. Of course to show how much of an upstanding citizen our MC is our dear author provides a cop out. Like buddy you have slaughtered countless individuals who have nothing to do with you but now you wanna play the hero. Smh

As another commenter said the stats literally lose all value and have no effect on the story or characters. At some point author forgets what stats actually do but has no choice to give the character higher stats to show 'progression'. To begin with we have no idea what the average stats might look like for anyone else but the MC and eventually author doesn't even bother listing the MC's stats at all.

My personnel vendetta
Spoiler

is how the author tries setting up the Madness merchant girl as a prospective love interest. Apparently she falls head over heels with the MC from making two to three successful trades with him. Like what? The most 2D cardboard cutout brain dead behavior I've seen recently. If the novel continues to promote or suggest this then... yikes.

[collapse]

Mc's summons who should be prevalent characters (considering our MC is a summoner) might not make a single appearance in 20+ chapters. Like Jamad literally disappears from the novel and is only seen by the occasional grumble from the shadow dimension. Same happens for Karen and Karuna.

Also the MC literally forgets about his revenge for dozens of chapters at a time and is eventually pretty much forgotten in the story.

Lastly remember how MC can't remember what happened when he was playing his pieces because it was all foggy until he absorbs his piece well that was a lie. MC just chose to selectively forget that piece because apparently this issue never occurs again.

I probably should have given this novel a two star but the sheer disappointment from watching a fantastic novel with great potential devolving into a contrived filler filled mess in front of your very eyes is like watching your favorite pet be euthanized, an experience you absolutely hate but when you pick up another dog or in this case novel it's bound to happen again.

Yes this review might be a tad bit harsh but I'm tired of authors writing the first 75 chapters of their novels as a wondrous tale with grandiose world building, novel concepts, fascinating characters, only to then immediately drop the quality of the story and then proceed to force feed their readers slop. Authors don't continue to pile on weight if you know your buildings foundations can't support it. If you can't keep up with the features and developments you wrote in your novel then don't write them in to begin with.

TLDR: Only read if you enjoy watching good stories go up in flames by their own creators. <<less

Pretty niche novel. As others say, the novel takes a dungeons and dragons (dnd) tabletop rpg approach on the Korean tower type novels. Instead of a strict tower, the earthlings are transported to another world where they have simultaneousish adventures that can last short or long, but regardless must complete one after every 30 rest days (if not ended early).

Before going into why the rating is 3 star, let's state why this novel is good. The unique mechanic setting is definitely high up there, but the novels other biggest strength... more>> is the character developments. You can feel the growth of every single significant character, from both physical to mental growth. The author also did a overall good job on how the plot is flowing, the over reaching world/main plot and arc connections are almost always done phenomenonally. These are what made me stay and somewhat love it.

The unique setting again is truly one of a kind so far on NU at least that I know of (rated 900 something novels). Like tabletop rpg games, there are some dice rolls. And these can determine the results, making a unique experience. However, the dice rolls are too unrealistically forced, and very improbable results.

Now for the reason why my ratings 3 stars despite how deep I am into the novel and my fondness of the story. Theres 4 main problems.

The firstmost is that the story is filled to the brim with filler. This filler consists of all the stats, skills, titles; essentially all system stuff info dumping. This is particularly awful whenever the arc ends and it reaches its resolution. Your guaranteed a full chapter (and chapters are long) of meaningless system info filler and thoughts related to that info.

This is also the second main problem. Almost all of the actual system, skills, titles, et cetera; are completely meaningless. These stats don't actually do anything in the story nor battles. They are really just cosmetics other than some skills (some which you dont even know what they are if u didn't memorize it, especially on what items give what). Skills which we don't really know thr exact details later but get the general gist like it's an attack or block. The MC full stat sheet / info is never put up in later chapters too. Probably because even the author doesn't know how much stuff he added to the MC.

This comes to the third main problem. There are often times mechanics, system stuff, and characters that become quickly redundant or forgotten. Though the overall character development is one of the best out there in my opinion, equally as much stuff are never mentioned again.

One example being the points leaderboard completely disappearing, and even the spectator stream comments for dozens of chapters after the most recent arc. Things which we thought would have a significant or relevant role quickly fade or blatantly not mentioned again like those he added to his small friend list. Not just minor side characters, but the most significant side characters: his summons, such as Karen who was always next to the MC also end up not really being mentioned at all and disappear.

Another example is how the whole setup arc setting on the adventures was blatantly thrown out. It was meant and setup as a tower type novel, but after his first rest, this was never forcibly done again as it was done before, and it became a free roam choose adventure with MC's knowledge. There are other times like this too. Such as the dice rolls for rest location changes changing from 1-20 (?) to a six sided die.

The last problem are of course some huge plotholes on the world settings. One notable one being the spectator beings donating madness being literal earthlings with how they are commenting earth culture stuff in the chat, and yet the players doing the same in their own forums. Another with how
Spoiler

some of the MC's old pieces reference and hint of knowing they have a god influencing them, while others are completely oblivious. It is very confusing as it has nothing to do with power levels nor really class either. Though bigger spoiler below

[collapse]

Spoiler

the religious class monk fighter one knew of the god, the others with no class relation sometimes knew something too.

[collapse]
.

Another big plothole being the lack of actual information spread on the MC, as somehow his deeds are always spread but not his actual name, face, etc when the later he gets in the story the more often he just mentions his name.

Those 4 were the biggest problems. And again, I do say this is a niche novel. If you are a fan of tower type Korean novels and of dnd type things, you'll probably enjoy reading this. If you aren't, especially on the dnd tabletop type setting, such as the very unrealistic unstatistic dice roll results, yet indefinitely intriguing, then you won't enjoy the novel due to the detriments.

There is also a manhwa version of this which I really liked. In the manhwa some of the negatives (filler basically) is mostly fixed, but in turn you are sacrificing the deeper plotlines and character developments, so I suggest reading both if you enjoyed. <<less

As previously mentioned in the other review, its a very Ttrpg inspired adventure story.

While there is an overarching plot, primarily the story functions in a mystery of the week style, breadcrumbing along towards the overarching goal.

Personally I dont mind the lack of additional "player" characters, as with each new summon a "role" in the party is filled with a new personality archtype.

May not be everyones cup of tea, but the writing style makes it quiet easy to pick up and put down, without losing track of where you are narratively... more>> while waiting for additional chapters. <<less

Seol hong's arc

[collapse]

I don't really find her character interesting, the writing for this arc, in my opinion, reached an all-time low. It feels like I'm dragging my feet while asleep, forcing myself to read it just to hope that by the next chapter it's over. Especially that she isn't even

Spoiler

one of Seol's pieces, it's her dead mother that's Seol's piece

[collapse]

so it feels like we aren't even getting

Spoiler

much information about Seol's piece because she's gone. Another thing is, I have a feeling almost every adventure Seol will have to go through will have a connection about Dragon (?) Empire. Seol dislikes being tied up by other people but in order to receive his piece's will he has to fulfill their unfulfilled desires. Which in this case, wanted Seol to help her child. This arc will definitely take a long time since Seol needs to help Seol Hong to be the empress, which I'm not really thrilled to read. It's like Seol is not the main character anymore, with it focusing on Seol Hong more, which isn't that unreasonable since it's her arc but I'm not interested in her tbh. Also, about Cheon Ju, I feel like she's an annoying woman. If she hadn't f̶o̶r̶c̶e̶d̶ plead for Seol Hong to not stop participating in the Dragon's Flower whatever event then she wouldn't have gotten in danger leading to Seol having to save Seol Hong. Its like she isn't the adult between her and Seol Hong. Again, it's just my opinion. In fact, up until this arc, this novel was my favorite action/fanstasy novel of all time. I still like it, but not as much anymore.

[collapse]

I'll edit this review once the current arc ends and there's more interesting plot. Up until then, i'll pause my reading for this novel. <<less

Ok so I'm sure the other reviews told you the gist of the story. I'm gonna tell you my experience with this.

This is an open-world d&d type story. The MC is basically a necromancer in which he can take people as his summons. What's different is that all of them have free autonomy. They aren't soulless. They have dreams and aspirations. As the story progress you start learning more and more about them and they grow not just in strength but in everything else. The MC is how you would... more>> describe as a neutral person. He isn't a saint but he also isn't a dick. He's very goal driven. He's currently stronger than any other transferee but it makes logical sense. He's always going on dangerous if not life threatening adventure so his rewards will match that.

What's great about this story is the wide array of characters. Each have their own personality and aren't overshadowed by the MC. Also some characters are designated as helpers to the MC. This means they could show up at anytime anywhere to help the MC. You don't who but they are very valuable. That means that even if someone has already left the story you haven't seen them they could still come back. Unless you count the dead no one is forgotten just not important to the current adventure.

The last thing I want to bring up is the pieces. Each piece is a character he created. They are actual people now. They have all left a mark in the no matter if it's big or small. MC cares a lot about his pieces. There are a lot of emotional moments revolving them.

Wait I almost forgot so there's a chat in the story. The Gods sold the earth to otherworlders and other gods so they have a stream for every transferee. They can donate and talk in chat. If forget if MC knows what's happening or not but either way MC doesn't acknowledged them. You might be wondering then why are they in the story. It's because the donations mean something. They're another form of currency. The actual chat is funny and doesn't clutter the story. If you don't like you can scroll away from it. It's very easy to identify the chat from the tone, format and way they speak.

All in all I find it very enjoyable. <<less

Genuinely one of the best novels I've ever read. Don't let its low score fool you, this is a true gem.

I'm sure you've already read the other reviews for this so I won't be going into that stuff, but I would like to expand on one of the aspects I find the best in this book and the main reason why I keep on reading: the emotional weight the story has. Now, I'm going to preface this by saying the emotional weight at times can be a bit hit or... more>> miss, but it's never negative just kind of "holy god that's good" or "eh". But, if you understand the weight of these words I'm about to say then I implore you to read it: when it comes to the story of the pieces that you actually interact with, the emotional storytelling jumps to SSS-Class Sui**de/Revival Hunter levels of emotion. If you haven't read it, think of it like Omniscient Reader levels of emotion with the train or demon king. Of course, that's mostly for the pieces that you actually meet in the story and interact with, as for the other pieces, well you just kind of see their backstories. You do actually see the importance of those characters due to the things they left behind, it's just that it's less emotional due to the story not actually interacting with them face to face.

Even without the emotional aspect the story still has a lot of merits outside of it, because in general its storytelling and writing is really good. The pacing is some of the best I've ever seen, and the story just keeps on getting more and more interesting as time goes on, with more things being interconnected leaving you wondering what is next. Some of the characters also get incredible development, although the people outside of the mc's companions don't really get much development in person, it's more behind the scenes. Even so, I can't wait to read more! <<less

The whole story was great at first, the whole setup of reclaiming characters and working the way to the top. The first 100-ish chapters were great, great enough for me to binge it all in a day. However,

1. The story starts to get boring. You'll know once you read it

2. Why aren't the spectators questioning the whole thing about reclaiming the dead characters stuff and knowing things he couldn't have known like the whole worldview and the wizard and stuff? And why do they even exist in the first... more>> place when the MC don't even know their existence and stuff?
Spoiler

imma guess that they are the gods cuz the MC said that the people from earth and getting observed by the natives and the gods

[collapse]

3. The characters slowly start to get 2 dimensional or 1 dimensional

4. This story gets more and more confusing

I don't care what you think but imma give this a 2 star no matter what. It had great potential near the start but the author just ruined it : ( <<less
