Update: Nope, I am done with this novel.

The s*upidest twist ever in the story without making sense at all.

Furthermore pulling the 'household tv drama' until the end of the novel is just unforgivable.

It is not worth reading at all.

What a waste of time.

Final score 2/5.

Previous Review:

Spoiler

Originally I wanted to finish this novel before reviewing it.

Unfortunately, the next story arc have disappointed me and I think would be the biggest downfall of the novel.

Let us begin:

The story follows a young man called Wu Yu, he was a mortal emperor, who stumbled upon an 'immortal' or 'fairy' inheritance.

He will then swear upon himself to become immortal, to break free from life and death cycle.

Parts of this novel especially the characters is inspired by Journey To The West.

-- Main Character:

At the beginning, although smart and decisive, the main character was ultimately naive since he was born and raised as a mortal.

Throughout the story, there will be a plenty of developments for Wu Yu that will nicely develop his character to the more complex and harsh cultivation world.

Wu Yu's comprehension and talent are very good even without the inheritance.

His inheritance is inspired by one of the character from Journey To The West.

Hint:

Spoiler

Ruyi Jingu Bang (Golden Hoop)

[collapse]

-- Other Character:

Every arc of the story will have its' own notable character that will stay relevant within the story arc.

However,

as the main character become stronger and the story arc moved on, the previous character will usually be irrelevant.

There are few characters that will stay relevant to the future story Random Rant:
Spoiler

Except one character I really hate author wants to keep relevant regardless of reasons

[collapse]

from the early arc.

There are sides characters that will be involved with the Main Character and the story most likely until the end. Hint:
Spoiler

Journey To The West Characters

[collapse]

--World Building:

    • Geo: Not too complicated (for now), mainly continents surrounded by seas.
    • Cultivation:
I won't spoil too much but it follows Qi Condensation, Jin Dan, etc.

Where most of them follow the rules from for ex: 1st level of Qi Condensation to 10th level of Qi Condensation.

    • Fighting:
Thankfully, most of the fight has a proper writing behind it and always influenced by the current skill learned by Wu Yu.

      Against stronger enemy,

He will tend to use smart strategy to overwhelm or beat the enemy which is a habit he gained since he was a mortal where wisdom could beat strength.

    • Auxiliary Technique:
Pill and Matrix/Symbol mastery is integrated within their cultivation.

In order to advance, it is important to understand the 'tao' behind pill and matrix/symbol cultivation.

Therefore, in this novel, it is expected that everyone would be able to create their own pill or draw their own matrix/symbol.

--Romance:

This is the part that unfortunately disappoint me the most.

The early romance of Wu Yu is very important to his development and ultimately matures him a lot.

This is usually a good thing, however, when the author decided to keep extending this romance arc, it sadly become like a 'household tv drama romance'.

My rant:

Spoiler

The author decided to keep the first girl to become relevant until the future story, whereas her story arc and relationship with the Main character should have ended long ago.

Even the motivation to keep her in the story is very shallow!.

The reason being just because the MC cares.

Which is unbelievable since their relationship was already broken and even the MC decided to cut-off further contact with her.

But then somehow the MC still cares about her and won't move on.

Even she herself hates the MC more than anything.

Oh! And of course the author pulled one of the cliche move where one character will disappear and suddenly either become as strong, or stronger from the MC for some reason.
[collapse]

Other potential romance characters have already start to appear however their conclusion or romance status with the MC have yet to be seen (until ch.916).

--

In conclusion, this novel is a must try and you may enjoy it.

I may continue reading this novel until the end which will depend on the next story arc.

Unfortunately it is hard to read a story arc when the foundation of that story arc is very weak and lazy (refer to my rant in the romance section).

It would have been 4/5, but until the current chapter I would give this 3/5.

MC is softer than a 90 year old man's pen*s on a cold winter night. In the first 200 chapters the MC is very disappointing, he is strong in a fight but is weak of character and also an idiot. He allows himself to be humiliated many times because he was an idiot and put himself in a position were he was not strong enough to retaliate or if he is strong enough he endures anyways because of some idiotic plan that requires his strength stays hidden.

He is also supposed... more>> to be a war veteran from his mortal days as crown prince, but somehow entering the cultivation world made him softer, he shows way too much mercy to his enemies. I don't need an MC to be ruthless, but one that is soft on his enemies is frustrating. He lets his enemies off one to0 many times.

The author outright retcons some characters with a single sentence. A female disciple that had humiliated the MC, tried to castrate him, and tried to outright kill him on numerous occasions goes from being an evil bit*h to someone who just used to be a bit arrogant because she grew up sheltered. An elder goes from being an evil corrupt elder trying to undermine the sect leader and who broke the rules on numerous occasions to try and get the MC killed, even tried to kill him herself, somehow becomes a respected elder who is a good match for the sect leader, who happens to be the master of our MC, who she tried to kill not more than 30 chapters ago. Maybe the MC can forget all that, but as the audience I find it hard to ignore.

The story seems to be getting better, but I'm barely hanging on and might drop it any minute. (Edit: dropped it around a 100 chapters later. I just couldn't get behind the MC's meek personality. Aside from a couple of moments when he manages to locate his balls, the rest of the time the MC is pathetic) <<less

So far this novel is very interesting however the author is the one I have problems with. The main love interest was clear cut at the beginning of the sect arc. However ... more>>
Spoiler

The main tsundere enemy chick called Lan Shuiye is spending alot of time with him. He eneded up saving her multiple times despite her literally trying to kill him for days on end (literally). I have a knack of dropping novels when they make the MC have an erection when a woman wants to kill them, Or I should say beautiful woman. Look at it this way, if a very pretty woman had a shotgun and kept shooting at your car, then you drove your car away but it was very damaged and you almost lost your life. Then other cars chased you down. You finally barely escaped and now you return later to see that these people are being hunted down and killed. Whats your next move? Will it be "Ohh she is from the same country as me I have to save her?? No you would be an absolute ret*rd if you risked your life to save those people who wanted nothing more than your head on a plate. So thats exactly what our MC has done. But it turns out he cants save them all, so who deos he save? The most prettiest and evil one which happened to be the one who made them all hunt him. So yeah after that she is NOT grateful to him but she kinda apologises. But all she needs to do is to say I love you and the MC would be like omg I loved you ever since you tried to kill me. There you have it they may as well become husband and wife.

[collapse]

So currently im not sure if she is the main love interest but if she is ill be dropping it. I cant stand great MC who are burdened by weak and pathetic women. <<less

The story is great and well written, I do not understand why this series is not more popular. In my opinion it is one of the better novels out there. It is better than a third of the top 25 on this website. The MC falls from the top after almost everything is taken from him, and is working his way back up to get his revenge. My only problem is the time between new releases, because I can not get enough. Update: When the MC left his sect, he... more>> has become s*upid and it turns out he is the weakest "immortal" outside his sect.

Imagine you went to a classical music concert. The opening song was an hour and thirty minutes long. It had twists and turns and was pretty much what you came to the concert for. It had everything you wanted. Then, the next song appeared. Contrary to your expectations, the next song wasn't a new song. It was the same exact song that you had just heard, but the conductor decided to conduct the band with his left hand instead of his right hand. You're confused, but the song was great... more>> the first time you heard it, so you don't mind staying to listen to it again. Afterwards, when the song is finished, the conductor bows and says he's going to conduct another song. Surprise, surprise, it has the same name as the first song. You think to yourself, no way, this can't be the same song I just heard twice now, right? Well, it is, but the first violin player was replaced by someone of equal talent, and that was the only change. That's what reading Heaven's Devourer felt like. The first portion was great, lots of twists and turns, 5/5. Afterwards, the author lost his sense of creativity and repeated the first part of the story ad nauseam. His favorite plot device is a jail where there's people conveniently kept to be killed, and the MC goes inside and kills them. Very exciting the first time you read it, but then it's not as exciting when it happens over and over again but with different species trapped inside the jail.

Also, the author tends to write "but it wasn't very easy for him" after writing a scene where the MC facerolls his enemy without breaking a sweat. And then he proceeds to describe how it wasn't easy—when it actually was. After the first hundred chapters, the same formula is boring to read over and over, 1/5. If you're looking for a novel to read, it's good for the first few hundred chapters.

Overall: 2/5, dropping at chapter 843, would not read again. <<less

First and foremost, forget the loser below me. The MC is not gay, nor is he suss in anyway. He didn't ditch his woman for his friend.
Spoiler

his woman wanted him to kill his friend because he is the son of her mothers killer, the friend who saved him and helped him. MC refused so the girl became enemies with him. To be noted the MC doesnt like her anymore but she hates him. He spares her a bit too much tbh. But still he thinks shes a little girl. And she hasnt gone past his bottom line.

[collapse]

okay now that we have washed our eyes with soap from what he wrote. This novel is decent. For an actual novel its below average. But for a Chinese xuanhuan story, its above average. So adding them together it means its an average novel.

Things to be noted. Many reviewers have reviewed this novel when it was in its infancy. Meaning they have been influenced by the cliche's of other novels and have wrote a review prematurely.

Pros:

    1. MC is consistent. He treats his enemies like enemies, and his friends like friends. Except for a few girls who survived his wrath. Mostly every enemy is dealt the same ending. But he has killed a few beautiful women before so no need to worry about him sparing beauties.
    1. Cliche twists. I have read plenty of these type of novels and they all have the same flavor. This novel however, puts some spice on the meal. So it has a different flavor but at the end of the day it still is the same type of food. It is predictable but not from a mile away predictable. The twists and turns are also done well. Better than most xuanhuan novels
    1. Romance. This romance has its ups and downs. MC can easily collect a harem, but for some unexplained reason he does not. Not saying non harem novels are bad. But in these type of worlds, it really doesnt make sense for him to have a monogamous relationship when other women have fancied him. He also falls in love unexplained out of nowhere. If he is around a pretty girl for long enough than he will eventually fall in love with her. The author completely lacks on the romance part. However the
      Spoiler

The break up with the first girl was done exceptionally. Completely understand both sides positions. A girl who lost her mother to demons, wants revenge. And an MC who wants a talented girl who doesnt kill someone just for being a demon. MC had enough and refused to entertain her demon slaying oath. So the relationship broke down. NO ntr also

      [collapse]
    1. Fights and abilities. This isnt too bad. It really is basic and is based off Sun Wukong. He also has abilities like shadow clones and size increase and size decrease. It is easy to imagine and the flow works smoothly. Fights work smooth too.
Cons:

    1. World building. This was done in a fantastic manner, you could really feel how weak and small the MC was. However this was all just dumped as the MC just leaves one continent and finds out they are far too weak and small compared to the rest of the world. Thats not too bad, but it isnt explained the power structures in the new continents. He also hops from one army to another, he has no loyalty to a single country. For example
      Spoiler

He is from the Yan Huang country. He has the yan huang bloodline. But then he travels with a princess to a foreign nation and joins their army. Wtf? Werent you already part of another country. Why are you betraying them? Yes he is in danger by that country, but this guy has no qualms about loyalty. For example imagine if your a Chinese soldier and then you leave to Japan and go to the American base in Japan. Then you join the American army, because the Chinese government wants to question you. Everyone just accepts it because he has a powerful American princess backing him. Why is he allowed to join an enemy army? Why is he not being doubted by the higher ups?

      [collapse]
A plot hole if you may say, its illogical.
    1. MC randomly got the goal to live forever. When I read that I was like, sorry wut? So he was a crown prince and he fought in many wars, so this guy should be numb to the fear of death. But the author wrote that this guy just wants to become an immortal because he really doesn't want to die. As a kid his second home was the battleground and he has killed plenty of people, and has come close to death many times. How can such a fearless kid become inspired by the fear of death? Not only that, he always courts death. If something is called extremely dangerous, a guy who wants to live longer would never put themselves in such a danger. But this guy? Ohh its dangerous? Good I need my blood to boil. His goal is to live forever but his actions say I want to die tomorrow im sick of living peacefully.
    1. The MC has to work for everything. For some reason nothing would be given to him if he just sits on his ass in a place. Meaning this guy gotta prove his worth every 10 seconds. Ohh you want me to pay you? Prove your worthy of me paying you. The MC just goes along with everything too, he has to fight for resources they say. But really he is fighting for crumbs and he knows it.
    1. MC is all brawn no brains. No amazing schemes, no cunning plot. He forces everything through his strength. Example?
      Spoiler

MC is in a foreign nation with a princess. He is a love rival for many powerful youths. So they gang up on him. In the midst of this MC female companion (not the princess) gets turned into a block of ice. The girl almost died to her own brother too. MC is summoned by the higher ups and they tell him dont tell anyone what happened because if people find out her own brother helped attack her, people would look down on them. SO what does MC do? He goes and starts screaming out what happened 10 seconds after he was told not to. He didnt say, you know what. I will keep my mouth and shut and beat the hell outta all these bastards later. Or he could have made people go and search for the female companion who turned into ice. Doing this people will get suspicious. MC only needs to spread rumours that she died by her own brothers friends. Rumours will grow stronger when they arent shut down immediately. MC only needs to make the people lose trust and question. But he decided to scream it out. Because he didnt think she deserved this and he wanted justice for her. He put himself in danger for such small things.

      [collapse]
    1. Plot armor. A few times author will write himself into a hole and readers will realize its too deep for MC to jump out on his own. SO author has to deus ex machina the situation to save the MC or just blatantly bring out some B.S plot armor. For example
      Spoiler

MC got done in by a powerful expert. He was a dead man. Powerful expert was like hang on, let me take your body. He entered the MC body and lo and behold the weapon of Sun wukong does some mysterious sh*t and bang the powerful expert is heavily weakened. Now MC allies can defeat him. Tch, when stuff like that happens. It makes you wonder is the MC invincible? Why the staff react when he is about to die? Its happened a few times too. It really don't make sense when there is aspirit inside the staff too that doesnt know sh*t about it because she died and it didn't help her. Only way he survived is due to author.

      [collapse]
Edit: NEW RATING 1/5.

WHY? I finished this novel, skimming alot of unnecessary parts. But this novel, is decent at the start. But tr*sh later on. Clingy ex is just ridiculous, iv seen c*ckroaches before, but not on that level. Trust me the novel becomes soo bad later on, you will be wondering what happened to the author. But the author decided to write a new book while this one wasnt finished, I believe he himself gave up on this book.

SO I really cant blame the author when his mind was elsewhere. Plot holes become far too consistent later on, and many story points are not finished and touched upon.

The most frustrating novel I ever read.

Frustration is fine in some novel such as TGOGF or Dark Blood Age, for which I've read 300+ chapters each, because the MC is a bit clever and the story and world development, interesting. Furthermore, the frustration doesn't last long even if it comes back from time to time.

Here with Heaven's Devourer, the frustration is present all the time (almost every chapters) and most of all, the MC isn't a bright one. After 60 chapters, not a single time the MC used his brain... more>> to deal with his enemies: He goes straight into the wall, and win with a "deus ex machina", and the frustration never goes away. Not even the other characters are likable...

I've read a lot of novel and I always trusted wuxiaworld. com for their novel choices (at least, compared to webnovel. com) and most of all, the translation quality, but Heaven's Devourer, even if well translated, is a bad novel. <<less

Honestly, not worth reading, The entire story makes makes sense much like how a 1 hour course on rocket science would make sense. It shoves so much down your throat that it makes what in a normal novel would be maybe an entire ark in 60 some odd chapters. Even the first chapter basically shoved the entire back story down your throat. Where is the story, character development. Normally a back story such as in this novel would make the reader feel harmed and feel resentful as the main character... more>> would, make you feel what the MC would. But here I felt more like I couldn't hit the next chapter button faster. Am not going to even attempt to reread when more chapters are out. <<less

Just started reading (Ch22).. And wow its simply awesome. The story flows really well. MC goes from being strong to having everything stolen from him to finding a way to get everything back. Really like the concept. The best thing about this Novel is the effort translator put into translating I havent seen a single grammar error.. Its really well done. The only minus point I can find is the translation speed for the novel is a bit slow compared to other popular novels but I believe its worth it... more>> for the quality of the novel. One of my fav for now. Hopefully it keeps going. My only regret is that I found this series too early.. If only I found it a few months later so I wouldnt need to go through the agony of waiting for new releases. <<less

I really liked this novel at the beginning, although now I realize that was probably just due to MC's unique abilities. As the novel progresses I lost that feeling of joy when I first started to read this novel due to a couple of things:

  1. Every person in this novel is a hypocrite (MC including) and loves to sh*t all over the MC for no reason. You have MC who comes from a backwater place (like all MC's do), yet every f*cking person is like "how dare you get that treasure we were all fighting for, if you don't give it up, my father will come and slaughter your homeland." Not a single person thinks that hey maybe if we treat this guy who came from a shitty place and can beat all of us (who are like always 5-7 cultivation levels ahead) and was able to get the treasure that no one else could get nicely, then he will belong to our country and be part of us. Instead they think hey look at this tr*sh, he must have a unique treasure, lets kill him and steal it from him. In the 700+ chapter's I've read, I can count MAYBE 5 people who were nice to the MC (and most of them were in the beginning of the novel which I enjoyed). In the last 300 or so chapters, not a single person has been nice to the MC or if they had, its simply to lure him to their homeland where they can kill him and steal his stuff.
  2. Enemies/Villians are pathetic in this novel. At the beginning there was some interesting people who would attack MC for other reasons than "you stole my treasure in this special realm that we were all fighting for" or "lets kill the MC simply because he is from a weak place and therefore there will be no consequences." Lately its been all that and I'm tired of arrogant young master villians. The funny thing is that even foot soldiers are arrogant. MC joined an army that is supposed to be full of "elites" and even the f*cking weakest soldiers are acting like they are gods.
  3. Romance. I wont even go into depth about how much I hate a certain female who is a c*ckroach, instead I will talk about our MC who is a hypocrite as it ties in here. He/she breaks off a relationship due to difference of thought, yet he continues to spare her life when she literally tries to kill him for not helping her kill demons. I remember MC in the earlier parts of the novel say that he will not kill innocent demons and he even made a demon friend who I love, yet in the recent chapters (700s) he enters a realm full of demons and slaughters them to get points for a trial.
Some pros: The fights and action is cool and I still like those scenes. MC... more>> abilities and clones are cool and the new abilities he learns is also nice. Ming Long is hilarious and she has kinda grown on me as I didn't like her in the beginning. There are some well created characters which I liked (mainly in the beginning), however MC quickly left them behind.

Overall this novel has fallen and I'm truly disappointed. At the beginning of the novel I would've given this a 4/5, however the quality has fallen since around ch 400-500 and I would give it a 2/5 now. <<less

I'm pleasantly surrprised with this novel.

Its true that you get a lot of generic xianxia tropes, but what attracted me to reading (which at the time of writing was chapter 44) the entirety of translated chapters were because of

a) the pacing
b) the transition

... more>> I really like the pacing because its not too fast, nor is it too slow. It stays somewhere in the medium (because the story has tendency to explicate certain things, especially up to the 30 plus chapters), but its not too short nor too draggy.

The transitions are well placed. We know what would happen, but there's always a twist. Therefore the cliffhangers do bring a meaning because its not a matter of "when will you wrap up the matter" (which is prevailent in many xianxia / xuanhuan cliffhangers) but rather a matter of "how are you going to wrap up the matter / solve the problem).

Like another commentator, I'm surprised at the quality of the starting point. Its very strong and I believe if you compare with some of the "top ranking" novels in NUF, this story can hold its weight / ground (well at least up to chapter 44 where as of writing, that's how much its translated) compared to other stories' 44 chapters.

Definitely a good one to read for the action and drama. <<less

It's a story of a creepy and obsessed guy who stalks his annoying ex girlfriend throughout the different worlds in the galaxy. His journey between each of his encounters with his ex is basically filler. The ex is as annoying as Rachel from Tower of God (you just want her to brutally die each time she is mentioned).

The rest is basic CN webnovel cliches.

So far its better than I initially thought. This novel has an MC that is too damn loyal though. No sane person will pledge a to the death loyalty for a sect they were supposed to be a servant of. Like id understand if he was treated like tr*sh everywhere he went, however he was the crown prince. This identity means you were the literal face of the empire, yet as soon as he makes a name for him in his sect. "Ah what was that empire I was born... more>> in called? Damn I only remember my sister is there."

Things I dont like about the novel? Dude has crappy goals. What I mean crappy is the immortality. Like out of nowhere the author sprung upon us, " I dont want to ever die, I want to live forever." like where did that come from? Literally the dude was a warrior prince. He fought many battles, so he should not have any excessive fear of death or overly obsessed love for life. Therefore in my opinon it is not logical for him to have any such goal of living forever. He hasnt tasted any sort of glory where he would want to live forever. Dude has a crappy life and is very unlucky. Plot armor isnt thick but you know his legacy is going to save him if things get rough. As for the story, so far it trends on the typical cliche plot BUT it has twists and turns and you will rarely guess the outcome. The plot armor isn't thick and there are a few plot holes at the moment, however im sure they will be explained sufficiently later on. Right now there isnt an overarching plot that the MC has to settle, none of that as of the moment. This MC is the type to react not act. Meaning he doesnt seek conflict he only deals with the conflicts he is dragged into by his surroundings, relations or actions. He uses logic alot and there hasnt really been a time where he has been impulsive. However he has a knack of getting kidnapped quite alot and his fellow disciples are ALL useless.

Overall not a bad read, very different from other xuanhuan novels where the MC is a hypocrite and very impulsive. Also this MC will definitely go through some sort of tragedy to nurture him, his character doesnt have room for development on the sense of the righteous part. The ruthlessness hasn't been instilled into him so I believe the tragedy tag will definitely do the job. Right now I think its the typical, join a sect as the cannon fodder then become number 1 then realise they are actually tr*sh and then join another sect become number 1 and repeat <<less

i have read quite abit of this novel in machine translation and my God it’s better than most of these tr*sh novels in the wuxia genre. The MC is given an extremely powerful inheritance by a servant and cultivates it to the limit. Based off Sun wukong.

Overall the novel has a decent MC who is rather righteous but also s*upid too. I mean the whole demons and humans can’t get along and will always be enemies because humans eat demons all the time is s*upid. Why? Because even in the... more>> demon world they eat each other. A lion will always eat a zebra when they come into contact, there is no we are both demons I shall spare you on behalf of my hatred for humans. No, it’s in its nature to feast on zebra meat whether the lion has sentience or not. So in this regard humans are at the top of the food chain, the lower animals don’t have a right to complain unless they can overthrow humanity.

The love life is where this novel gets interesting.
Spoiler

many of us thought, Lan Shuiye would be a love interest due to her behaviour at the start acting all tsundere but we were wrong. It doesn’t seem like she is a love interest as of yet. The love interest is a little girl named Nangong Wei, she is rather cute and is introduced in the novel as a 12 or 13 year old girl. The MC is rather foolish to indulge her everywhere he goes as if she his blood sister. He knowingly took her out of the sect despite her never leaving before and her parents obviously didn’t want her gone. Anyways time to spoil the novel. This girl wants him to kill demons like they are ants on the floor. But Wu Yu foolish righteousness refuses to kill demons who are not evil. Not evil here means they don’t eat humans. So she gets rather angry every time he gets soft and I believe a situation happened where he had to pick between killing an innocent demon or his relationship with nangong. At that point they are pretty much dating or exclusive best friends. The MC chooses to spare the demon which results in beef. After that the little girl follows her dads wishes and accepts the marriage to a young genius of the sect. This enrages Wu Yu but he resolves himself and cuts the connection between them. The girl accepted a dao companion and three years later I believe was the marriage or something. Coincidentally Wu Yu was expelled from the sect and taken in by a major power. He then comes back three years later and defeats both the little girl and her boyfriend. She is still angry with him and now deeply in love with her boyfriend. The boyfriend then says “wu Yu you have won, now go and leave us alone. We will be dao companions whether you like it or not.” Now the author couldn’t risk anyone interpreting this as ntr so he made Wu Yu kill that guy for saying that. Mind you it was a life and death match in which he should have also killed the little girl who has grown up btw. But he spared her and let her live due to old times, despite their connection being cut off and her hating him more than anyone. Wu Yu finds another woman and gets with her while that little girl stays relevant here and there throughout the novel.

[collapse]

so a really interesting Romantic plot in this novel. As of yet I don’t think it’s going harem route but who knows perhaps it will. Wu Yu can kill a woman who tries to kill him which I like, since he acts righteous then he shouldn’t discriminate between genders. After all when it comes to justice there is no gender discrimination.

My grievances with this novel is that, the MC really doesn’t have much of a motivation. He was a crown prince and almost died, he became a cultivator by luck too. He is fearless when it comes to danger, but he is sh*t scared of actual death. It contradicts his nature, for example this guy goes into dangerous situations like they are nothing. If there was a 95% chance of dying in a tomb, he will enter it because of that 5%. Despite all this fearlessness. His actual motivation is that he fears death and wants to live forever. Now that doesn’t make sense, he relies on plot armor to survive wild endeavours but he fears death to the point of wishing to live forever. Other MC they want peak strength or something, this guy doesn’t want to die. So what does he do? Go into the most dangerous situation you can imagine and barely live. He disregards his own life for the safety of others, but again he fears death. So my point is, if someone really feared death. Would they risk their life every single day for small gains, when there is a safer route.

My other grievances is that, with regards to the plot. There isn’t any overarching amazing plot. It’s just many arcs divided into smaller arcs which have their good and bad.

Overall this novel is a fresh new read for this genre. The MC is likeable, comedy is zero, romance is passable, fights are amazing, plot is not bad in regards to each arc. I would say it’s a decent novel that deserves higher praise. I gave it a 3 because it really doesn’t have a ground breaking plot and is using Sun wukong’s abilities. Idk if a copyright strike will be sent down so yea lol. <<less

I've had enough. Lol. I dropped it at 100 something chapter. The MC is fookin s*upid. He only use his brains for jumping and swinging his staff since he has great fighting powers, but other than that, not so much. I think his brain's just there for decoration and simple command. Lol. He always get humiliated and he won't do anything about it, always rush to situations without thinking things through. Like when the idiot emperor killed his sister's uncle and his sister told him, he's like "I wiLL g0... more>> t0 tHe PaLacE aNd c0nFr0nt tHeM" when he knows those people are extremely evil and stronger than him by many levels. Then when he get attacked he's like "He'S mUcH str0ngEr tHaN mE I wiLL diE 0mG wHat Sh0uLd I d0?" Idiot. You know damn well from the start that your enemies are stronger than you, then why did you battle it out with them without thinking about anything at all. If you deviced a plan and thought things through that wouldn't happen. He was always being saved by that sh*t luck of his. Lol.

It's always like that, he rush in a scene without thinkingor any plans then put himself in a dangerous situation then get confused why he's losing. If not for that damned luck and epiphany that he always get when he's near death, he would long be dead. He said he needs to hide his sister so he hid her in an... inn. Who the f*ck would hide someone in an inn if he knows there are many people with superpowers that are hunting them. His sister is also so s*upid he clearly told her to not open the door, but ta-dah! She still did. Lol. So someone recognized her, which is also fookin bullsh*t because as a royalty in an ancient China-like setting, she should be treated like god and commoners couldn't see her easily, especially she's unmarried, so only her family should be the ones to see her face. But why do commoners know her face and a random bystander immediately recognized her when she opened the door? Ridiculous.

They're both idiots. They're all idiots. The MC, his sister, his ex, his sect brothers and sisters, the villains are all idiot. But the MC is especially and a different kind of dumb and s*upid. <<less

Where do I begin? This novel had great potential and started off strong. But unfortunately the author decided to juggle two balls at the same time and the content fell through the roof. From a consistent 7/10 the novel deteriorated to a solid 2.5/10. I legit kid you not, 95% of the readers on WW are reading it later on for the fact that they've already invested so much time and are so close to finishing, might as well finish it off.

The world building just goes upside down later chapters.... more>> A world record feat that has never before been seen, is now a common feat that is nothing special. The author made the MC overpowered that he cant lose to the same realm, so what does he do to combat this? He makes everyone else overpowered too. So now random geniuses never head before can also jump the pinnacle cultivation realm and defeat opponents. The MC could literally not defeat them except for deus ex machina upgrades mid fight.

Romance is done horribly later chapters. Its literally so s*upid and illogical how the author wrote the MC ex. Worst character by far and she is being dragged along in the story to stay relevant.

the story just takes a turn for the worse, the author tries so hard to make things make sense but they betray the world building he made. In turn I give this an overall 3.4/10 <<less

Really exhausting.

The main character is really simple in his thoughts, and in his pursuit of immortality. Basically, he just seeks death all the f*cking time. There is no suspense since things never really settle down properly, or at least with any good conclusions for conflicts.

But what makes it really exhausting to read, is the fact that the main character seems quite normal, in comparison to the other stereotypically hypocritical, desensitized-to-mu*der arrogant troublemaker harem-makers. He seems to have actual emotions, and they conclusively affect his choices in a negative way at... more>> times, as opposed to the omnipotent cool-headed badasses of other novels; for example. excitement after acquiring a treasure has brought trouble multiple times so far.

The grammar and flow of the story is pretty good overall. Though there could be more relapses from the high-intensity dramatic fights and shit-talking. The author is likely obsessed, or perhaps only aware, and leaning on a specific way to create drama, as it has happened throughout the novel without pause; no matter strong, important, weak, cannon fodder - the enemy at the time, or a future antagonist, will be praised to high heavens even after the first meeting. All just to make the fall greater. Of course, the author always monologues about how the main character's Dao and insights etc. have evolved and how he has learned from the experience, though he will never think of it again as it was only there to show the reader how majestic our tiger-eyed beast of an alpha male the main character is.

The setting and the powers and skills are the most ludicrous, absolute dogsh*t part of the whole novel in my humble opinion. How come the main character thinks he won't age any faster in a time accelerated area? What is the logic behind a man being able to transform into a 5-500000000k zhang tall (wide?) thingie all of a sudden. With no mention of any effects in the immediate surroundings. Just... *poof* it's there. And what's the deal with the doppelgangers being eaten by monsters and everything; melting etc. The man could solve world hunger by creating more and more clones. There seems to be no cost to some things either, yet some things cost a ridiculous amount of stuff. Typically when the main character has come around some greater amounts of wealth as of late. Gotta get rid of it, y'know, just so there's a device to drive the plot further onward.

The plot is aight... nothing to praise really. Doesn't come to my mind at least. It's not too bad.

I had to quit reading at chapter 500 and continued it after a half year-long break as it proved to be too exhausting to read. Hence, I can't comment on the character development too much, other than he really hasn't grown any smarter. He is still a reckless buffoon most of the time. Though I have been noticing small hints of a burgeoning seed of intelligence in his mind.

The MC is really accurate relative to his age though. He is only 30-40 years old at the moment anyway, which is like, pre-pubescent for cultivators.

So why did I rate it 3 stars? Simple: I'm not rating a classic book or anything. Jeez. It's a CN novel, and we all know they're written up hastily for money with minimal thought being put into plotting, worldbuilding, or even simple fact-checking to avoid missing plotholes and relying overly on deus ex-machina mechanics. Y'know, they don't got the time for that. Need to get the chapters rolling in.

I'll drop a few good things here:

  • Great dialogue!
  • Great personalities and characterizations!
  • Interesting and alive scenery - when rarely described.
  • Pretty cool fight scenes and abilities - most of the time. Looking at you, bizarrely tall transformations.
  • Very good mysteries. Kept me intrigued.
All-in-all:

It's just the unfortunate reality, that a novel as mediocre, or even subpar as it is, still could be rated as three stars. And the fact that I haven't even (yet) regretted reading it so far perhaps justifies the rating in even greater lengths than arbitrary relativistic comparison between and across genre (s). <<less

This is an excellent story. But it should be emphasized that this story is first and foremost about the MC and his path toward attaining immortality. It is a long and arduous path, and he will have fated encounters and meetings and eventual partings as well. Such is life.

The second important point is that this story is very much rooted in Buddhist philosophy. In that regard, at its core it's a bit different from other xuanhuan and may conflict with what some readers expect from this genre.

Those two points (story... more>> of MC's path toward attaining immortality & roots in Buddhist philosophy) go together. They explain the MC's character, his actions, how he evaluations his decisions, and why some things happen (karma/fate).

The path to immortality (or enlightnment in Buddhism) may involve fated encounters and guidance received along the way, but it's primarily one you are responsible for walking towards alone (it's based on your own efforts, comprehension, control of your mind, and decisions). In that regard, the MC's actions and thinking are generally very consistent and also explain why he lets some things go while not others (he prioritizes not letting things distract his mind and lets things go when possible).

There's also a recognition that he is his own person with his own beliefs (dao) while the same applies to others. The MC recognizes it's not possible to force his dao on others and vice versa. This is an important point for being at peace with oneself and to be in control of your mind, and is an underlying basis for his interactions with others (it may not be obvious to some until near the end of the Shushan arc).

Anyway, some of the criticisms I might give for other series, I can't give here as it is part of the Buddhist philosophy of the story and handled naturally. Overall, I've enjoyed the read so far through chapter 360. <<less

I would highly recommend this novel. This novel is about a man who has everything a mortal can desire and end up losing it. He will try to regain his honor and by doing that he will fight on a more grand stage. The Theme of this novel is Daoism with a great amount of mythology and cultivation. The characters are distinct and through the protagonists thoughts we get to know these characters. The only problem with this novel is the antagonists, they aren't really a threat to the protagnist,... more>> it might seem like it, but they can't beat him intellectually or potential. But even then characters are different and I for once can remember most of the side characters.

The translation speed isn't the highest, though it seem to be catching up to a few releases pr. Week.

Again I recommend this novel and I hope it continues to progress and expand in therms of world building and interaction with characters! Also good for once to see a cultivation method that isn't just meditation! <<less

Ahh where to begin, this novel had potential. The MC is based of Sun Wukong and this in a well done xuanhuan novel can be done excellent. However this novel is just lackluster.

Pros:

  1. The fight scenes are thought out and done well. The power system is nice and easy to follow, nothing too complicated.
  2. The translation is excellent, no complaints there.
  3. story starts off rather decent and as always the cultivation novels have MC jumping from place to place which is good imo so it has potential to get better. MC is also bearable at the beginning and if his character developed it could have been a great character.
Cons

  • Romance. I dont understand many authors who write cultivation novels and then think that romance is something essential. imo these novels would be done much better with no romance at all since most of them are garbage. I mean harem is essential in these novels since romance is done so badly.
    Spoiler

For example his first girl. Nangong Wei, iv never seen such an annoying love interest in these novels before. She broke up with him for such a s*upid reason, he decided to defend demons while she decides they need to die. However the issue with this is, the author decided to flip on this and make Nangong a clone of a phoenix girl LOL. so all this 'i need to kill all demons' was just a pathetic ploy when she was a damn demon herself. Imagine that... Also the dragon girl dont have much depth to her too, she is much better than other girls but even her is just bland.

    [collapse]
  • Plot. too many plot holes that the story becomes mundane. Soo many missing plot points that weren't touched upon.
    Spoiler

The person he got the legacy from. the old servant, no idea who he is or what he is. he quite literally dies there and never appears again in the story. Also the dragon ancestor never makes an appearance despite alot of foreshadowing to his appearance etc. many other plot holes that just dont make any sense at all. but I understand, author decided to abandon this novel and start his other novel. so thats why this novel is lacking.

    [collapse]
  • MC motivation. for these novels where will power is a form of plot armor, I only accept high will power MC if they have great reasons. for example, if they are fueled by revenge. there will power will be insanely high until they get revenge, once they get it. This will power will be gone. Following my logic? Anyways the higher the goal, the stronger the will power required to obtain it. Wu Yu goal? immortality? why does he want to be immortal? no idea, author just decided to make this his life goal which is weird. for someone who loves life soo much he is constantly taking death to dinner, a full course meal in fact. Its also stated he was a general who grew up on the battlefield, so he shouldnt have an intense fear of death. Anyways his will power is insanely high due to him wanting to be immortal. idk why, he dont fear death... those that want immortality mostly do it because they fear death, or they dont want to die. Wu Yu dont fear death, in fact if he were to die for his ex girlfriend, he would... which is funny
  • World building. Early on, the world building made sense and was really good imo. Everything you felt, however later chapters. everything is flipped on its head. Things that havent been done before in history are common feats now. geniuses earlier in the novel were said to be never before seen talents, yet the next location he goes are a notch higher.
Overall, I was enjoying this novel at the beginning, however it became a chore to read later chapters. I do regret reading it due to one character the author just refused to kill. the novel would be 2.5 out of 5 if he had killed her. its not that she is an evil character which I hate, she is badly written and is being carried by plot armor.
