The ancestral grave of the Su has great feng shui; others bow and beg for sons, but they can easily have nine. When they wanted a daughter, Su Ran Ran is born. As the only daughter, she’s treated and treasured like a princess, rendering her a bit mischievous and spoiled. To help protect her from her brothers’ bullying, she’s sent to Zhu Mountain as a disciple.

Alas, she’s all grown up and the family struggles to get her (and her cousin) married. When she learns about a new potential marriage, she tries to run away but is caught off guard after accidentally poisoning a young man in white. Brought home, her potential partner arrives and to the side, he greets her with, “I don’t plan on marrying you, please drop that thought.” Rejected. It’s not like she wants to marry him anyway. She’s always pondering why they want to get her married so soon.

Disclaimer: This story is difficult for me to rate so I won't. I still would like to give it a review. The spoilers are pretty big, so open them with full awareness of that fact. I did split them up and try to label them. This story is luckily quite complex so it would actually be difficult to spoil it all at once. Additionally, I don't discuss the side CPs at all so you should get a pretty good read out of this book even if you do... more>> read all my spoilers.

Review

A main feature of this novel is both it's greatest strength and greatest weakness: This is a novel primarily written from the first person perspective of an unreliable narrator. This is a strength since it gives a mystery to be solved as the readers gradually pick up clues. However, it was really hard for me to sympathise with Su Ran Ran in the early chapters as a result. She's a very Mary Sue at first glance due to this intentionally limited perspective. She is low IQ and ditzy yet many men pamper her. Luckily (?) the majority of these men have a familial relationship with her so it's not like it's a massive harem. Her relatively distasteful personality does start to change for the better a little later on once it's revealed why she is this way:

Spoiler

It's mentioned early on that she has been 'poisoned', but the nature of this poison and it's treatment is glossed over within the first half of the story. What you don't know is that Su Ran Ran has essentially been lobotomized. She had three golden needles inserted into her brain, one of which is still inside suppressing both her ailment and a few months of memories. Not every character is aware of her condition. Her own reaction to finding this out was actually pretty funny. She thought something along the lines of, "No wonder Su Nan (one of her her brother's) always thought I had something missing from my brain. It turns out something that shouldn't be there had been added in!"

[collapse]

To be honest, the male lead is much more interesting than Su Ran Ran. She herself even questions why he is so devoted to her. The only person who might be more pitiful than him is the second male lead who is also willing to sacrifice for her (so cliché) which might be why this was adapted into a drama.

Male Lead:

Spoiler

It's a little hard to tell at first, but it's the man she poisons on accident at the very beginning of the novel. Neither of them recognize each other during the scene. Su Ran Ran doesn't have her memory and she had been disfigured from the poison when they initially met. Plus, he had been mislead to believe she had died and only knew her by a false name: Yue Ying (Moon Shadow). In fact, they met each other three years ago when they were both in their lowest situation and sympathised with each other. Eventually, they fell in love I guess?

He has a sense of humor and teases her when he doesn't recognize her as a petty revenge. Later he teases her more in order to confirm her identity. Once her identity is confirmed he gets angry at her for not recognizing him/thinking he wants to marry someone else, before going back to teasing her. There is a scene where he transfers poison from her body to his that should be serious, but he tries so hard to make it ambiguous. I'd love to see someone with his personality in a less dramatic novel.

Second Male Lead:

Spoiler

The fiancé. At first he thinks Su Ran Ran is like any noble girl and tries to offend her in order to get her to call off the wedding. He manages to offend her, but doesn't realize she has no power over this. Later, he finds an excuse to escape the wedding himself. I'm not sure why he never tried to talk it over with his father in law or her directly? The drama at least says that this wedding was granted by the emperor, but the novel has been implying that this was entirely the initiative of Su father so far.

What does seems to be certain is that he feels guilt over this woman he doesn't want to marry, eventually taking all responsibility for calling off the wedding. I am not sure about the book, but in the drama this means he gives up his career and puts his clan's future at risk since messing around with the wedding destabilises the delicate power balance in the capital.

I really have to ask: did the Qin family really have no daughters available for a marriage alliance with the Su's? Also, the point of this alliance was to better support the imperial family. Wouldn't the potential marriage with the princess have put the Qin family in a much better position for that? The Qin's and Su's were already working together quite well. An overt alliance just managed to make the third family (the Jiangs?) wary.

The main plot twist:

Spoiler

Surprise! The main villain (s), and maybe even our protagonist, are suffering under some type of curse that makes them bloodthirsty. Literally. Think vampires (aka 'blood sucking demons'). This is also Second Senior Brother's *real* reason for distancing himself from Su Ran Ran per the drama. The big boss is an 80+ year old immortal who has (also?) poisoned the major love rival.

[collapse]

I unfortunately cannot bring myself to complete reading this novel or watching the drama due to personal preferences. The drama is too long. The novel's plot jumps around too much. Both have wayyyy too many characters to remember. However, I don't think this should stop others from giving this or it's drama a try. This story has intriguing mystery, romance, and supernatural elements. Combined they make a pretty package waiting for you to unravel it's secrets. <<less
