After his qi center is destroyed, a martial arts instructor of the Blood Demon Cult is assigned to learn and research the martial arts of four captured murim masters. However, when the Cult betrays him and decides to kill him, he fights back and everyone in the Cult dies, including himself.

He then mysteriously wakes up in the body of Baek Suryong, a young martial arts instructor in the rural countryside with a disease that will kill him within three years. He realizes that the martial arts he had learned holds the key to healing his new body’s illness, but in order to do that, he needed money. A LOT of money.

Baek Suryong thus embarks on a journey to become the Star Instructor of the Azure Dragon Martial Arts Academy, and earn enough money to save his own life! Perhaps he would even manage to educate some kids along the way…

I will fight anyone who dare to give my beloved Baek below 3 stars. DON'T U DARE. Looks how hardworking and good baby he is. How could u hate him?

The story is quite balance to make him OP without make it too oblivious. And the other character is getting fleshed out quite good as well. Not forgeting the flow of the story is not repetitive. U need action? Check. No romance? Check. Bromance? Check, but u need a long way to get it. U need hurt/comfort moment? Hohoho, let's join... more>> me being giddy everytime teacher Baek's past was triggered. Ohohoho!

U NEED ADORABLE HARDWORKING PRETTIEST BEST OF THE BEST TEACHER as MC? READ IT. Periodt.

And it has webtoon! My beloved Baek has webtoon! What are u waiting for? Read it!

Edit: TEACHER BECOME MORE AND MORE ADORABLE I CANT I WANT TO MARRY HIM LEMME MARRY HIM WHO U ALL TO THINK I CANT DO IT ILL MARRY HIM AAAAAAAAAAA!!!

This is really good. The plot is very interesting and the MC is likeable.

The premise seems cliche but the story itself has many interesting aspects. The MC isn't particularly OP - the villains are more OP XD. Most of the characters are likeable in their own way and have unique personalities. Also, there's no romance!

The story is relatively slow paced, but it's not boring. Rather, I like how the author takes time to explore the setting of the world and the MC's past life.

However, the power dynamics are quite confusing.... more>> The whole top ten masters thing confuses me because it feels like there are a lot of people stronger than them?

Spoiler

Also, I don't understand why the MC doesn't use gang qi. He's used it maybe once or twice? I may have missed something though since I read it quickly.

[collapse]

That aside, it's really good. Highly recommend. <<less

I finish its until the end and have to admit its really good. The fights are incredible, the plot is super enjoyable amd it's not so complicated that you starts to get confused midway. The characters are super interesting too.

My favorite is no doubt Namgung Su, the MC is a close 2nd.

No romance, but my personal ship/ opinion:

Spoiler

Honestly there is no romance in the novel, but not gonna lie I'm pretty sus about Namgung Su and Bark Suryong. Like bruh, I cant be the only one feeling this way. Like they literarily understand each other so well, they trust each other and is willing to DIE for the other. There is so MANY moments of bromance in the story that I cant help but SHIP them. Like when Namgung su got mad his father is sus on Baek Suryong, when Baek Suryong saves Namgung Su and help him reform his body, when they fight together and perfectly match each other during a fight, when namgung can recognize suryong at a glance on disguise, when namgung does NOT question MCs martial arts AND THE LAST PART, YOU GUYS GOTTA READ UNTIL THE END AND YOULL UNDERSTAND. I can go on for DAYS. The Tsundere namgung Su x the carefree and mischievious Baek Suryong, I flippin LOVE this dynamic

I have not gone through the novel yet. But, I have read the manhwa (atleast to the currently translated chapters) and have enjoyed reading it a lot.

It has similar vibes with 'Return to Mount Hua Sect' like how both the MCs are crazy about training their students/other disciples.

A must read because it is action packed and equally funny. A gem of a novel.

For a Murim novel... it's meh. For a FANTASY NOVEL? TOP TIER!

The plot is actually good and does not get overly complicated. I like that every arc helped build up all the way to the end and there were no useless fillers. It's a fun read and I was laughing my ass out then crying unstoppably at certain parts. This work know how to tug at the heart strings (The Wedding in a Dream scene 😭😭😭😭😭 Master Eun Yerin)

Most of all I love the characters. If the plot had... more>> gone to sh*t I would have still stuck around because of them. The MC is awesome and the ALL the students, not just the direct disciples, are such wonderful characs that I root for each of them (Tang Soso is creepy but her heart is in the right place 🤣😂).

Lastly... NAMGUNG SU!! 😘😘😘 He's such a scene stealer every time he appears. I love his bromance with Suryong (I'm sure there are shippers, but I'm glad it's just best friendship between them). It's been a while since I have read good bromance. And to think I did not like him at first. He's just a massive tsuntsun (One I actually like and I can't wait for the third manhwa season so everyone will know how amazing he really is). (PS. I CAN'T WAIT FOR HIS LIL SIS TO APPEAR. THE CUTENESS) <<less

Witty and strong MC, hilarious interactions with the father in the first few chapters + interesting interactions with the characters.

Romance: none

Summary:

Spoiler
  • MC was part of the blood cult and learned from the 4 great masters of the time after they were kidnapped
  • They're all killed by the blood cult
  • He reincarnates into a body who died after trying to learn a demonic art
  • The body is sick and needs to learn the most powerful blood art to turn it into an OP body, luckily the MC knows this

  • He goes to the Azure Dragon Academy as an instructor

I thoroughly enjoy the protagonist's character.

His mix of dorky, cunning behavior, combined with his serious and dramatic attitude shaped by his past, makes him a compelling and layered character.

I also appreciate the dynamic interactions between his five disciples and how they engage with one another and other students. These relationships add depth and liveliness to the story.

... more>> However, I do have several reservations. One major disappointment was the ending of the story.

The last 20–30 chapters, which focused on the final big war against the Blood Sect, felt rushed and unsatisfying. Despite the build-up throughout the story, the war lacked the weight and resolution it deserved, leaving the conclusion incomplete and unfulfilling.

Another aspect I disliked was the portrayal of one of the protagonist's five disciples.

The author excessively glorified this disciple, repeatedly emphasizing their genius and portraying them as flawless and unbeatable among their peers—even older students. While the other four disciples were also excellent in their learning processes, and one of them was a genius too, the disproportionate focus on this particular disciple became tiresome. The constant praise and repetition of their "unmatched" qualities detracted from the balance and development of the other characters.

Additionally, the story failed to truly capture the essence of the martial arts/Murim world, which was one of its biggest shortcomings.

Instead of immersing readers in the rich, traditional atmosphere of the Murim realm, the narrative was diluted by subtle but persistent modern clichés.

These misplaced elements disrupted the authenticity of the setting, making the world feel less grounded and compelling.

This lack of depth and adherence to Murim principles created a sense of incompleteness, preventing me from fully engaging with the story and its potential as a martial arts epic.

P.S. I also occasionally felt a sense of discomfort or awkwardness with how certain events unfolded, as they didn't align well with the tone or expectations of the story.) <<less

Star Instructor Master Baek may not be the best murim, but it's hands down one of the best academy webnovels. Every major character, from the students to the teachers, feels well fleshed out with unique personalities and character development over time. Unlike typical murim novels, Master Baek focuses less on the action and martial arts and much more on character interactions and well-written conversations.

this is not a murim novel, it's a modern academy novel with murim themes. It's fine if you enjoy it, but you shouldn't go into this expecting a typical murim story. It has none of the murim tropes except for the vague martial arts theme. The style of writing is also quite different from most webnovels, being more reminiscent of western novels, especially with how the characters talk. Though I don't know if that's how the novel is written or the influence of the translator. In all cases though, if... more>> you are planning to read this, read the first 10 or so chapters and decide if you like it or not. <<less

MY BELOVED MASTER BAEK AAAAAA

I started getting into the story through the webtoon (the art is GORGEOUS) and while waiting for season 3, I decided to read the novel (and because I missed Master Baek too much T-T).

At first, it was hard getting used to the MTL but the story was so addicting that I just can't stop reading. Every arc was written so well, from start to finish, I felt like there was never a boring moment. Even the supposed filler arcs were wholesome and interesting.

Not to mention the... more>> PLOT and CHARACTERS. Guys, I felt like I just found nirvana in the middle of the desert or something. Like I didn't know this was my kind of food you know LOL. I won't spoil you much but I especially love
Spoiler

the relationship between the old disciples and Master Baek, like it was so bittersweet T-T. The author gave a kind of happy ending, BUT I WANNA SEE THEM HAPPY and TOGETHER.

Anyway, guys, PLEASE READ this. I need more people to obsess over Master Baek with me. 😿❤️ P.S. I haven't read the side stories yet (because I can't find them SOB). If anyone knows where I can read them or have the pdf or something, PLEASE contact me 😔🫂 <<less

8/10. As a murim story I'd give it a 7/10 because there are some plot holes and for a murim story the plots seem somewhat predictable. But for an academy & fantasy story 9/10. The main plot of this story is truly surrounded by the main character and his experiences. All the characters are very well developed and fleshed out and they all serve to show the mc's character or character development. Though, I will say that I think the author spent too much time working on the MC and... more>> characters that the plot seems to have a few plot holes- but it is not that problematic and if you notice it, it'll be like towards the end of the story. There is like barely no romance and it's comedy but surprisingly sad/ heartwarming in the later chapters (I read everything except some of the side story chapters). I'm a bit disappointed about the last couple of chapters because the battle that I waited for this whole time seemed a bit rushed and I'm still left with a lot of questions from the plot holes. But overall it was good. Just think of it as like a watered down version of Return of Mount Hua Sect (less plot wise & intensity) and more if Chung Myung became a mature all knowing teacher. He is very overpowered though. Good read! <<less

I kind of enjoyed it. The main character is a ruthless teacher that is learning about other ways to teach. I would hate to have him as a teacher.

There's something lacking, but I cannot find what that missing thing is. I think the combat is one of the issues. The author uses onomatopoeia such as swoosh, whoosh, etc. To denote action such as swinging a blade. The sound effects are used for each action scene, making them feel less interesting to read about.

I do recommend at least trying to read... more>> past chapter 1 or evening skipping past most of chapter 1. The backstory only serves as worldbuilding, and the author will eventually show readers more of what occurred during the main character's previous life.

Since I am only 49 chapters in, I cannot say whether it will get better, but I hope it will. <<less

The premise and general plot of the story is pretty enjoyable! The main character's personality and how he interacts with other characters make this a super fun read!

There was no actual romance or any endgame love interests for the MC.

Some spoilers about character relationships:

Spoiler

I'm glad the MC didn't end up with anyone at all, but if the main character was going to end up with any of the characters it would lowkey be his rival star instructor? out of everyone they seriously had the most chemistry? I initially never thought their relationship would develop to be as cute, silly, and intimate as it did? I adore their dynamic a lot and their development overall. Also they're genuinely so funny together sometimes I adore them so much.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Well even though the main character didn't get romantically involved with anyone, there's surprisingly quite a bit of romance between some of the side characters?

[collapse]

The characters are honestly well-written and have distinct characteristics that make them feel pretty well-rounded. I loved seeing how different characters interacted with each other and how the relationships between them developed. There's plenty of family and found-family all around,

Spoiler

specifically the MC and his actual family, MC with his past masters, MC with his past disciples, MC with his current disciples, MC with his friends, MC with like almost every character at this point

[collapse]

Spoiler

I also really like the parallels and contrasts in characters between the mc's current and past disciples?

[collapse]

I think it's well written in those respects, or overall well written in aspects of the mc's feelings and relationships with other characters.

There's so many humorous, fun, and heart-wrenching scenes in the story that are done really well and I wish I could experience reading it for the first time all over again.

There aren't any huge issues throughout the plot until the end or near the end of the main story. Despite how much I still love the story and the characters, along with how it's still one of my favorite webnovels, it's kind of difficult to recommend when the ending is just really not the best? I do sort of get what the author was trying to do with the ending, but it just wasn't really up to par with the rest of the story before that.

Some spoilers about ending:

Spoiler

A side character that's known to be incredibly strong, in the top 5 strongest, is killed off in a pretty unremarkable way. Of course, his opponent was expectedly stronger than him, and his death had some "significance, " so I guess it makes sense, but his death honestly didn't add anything to the story, and it feels like it was just written in just so that at least some notable character on the same side as the protagonist died in the war? Well it's not like he was that much of an important character, but this part to me just feels out of place in the story, which is part of the reason why the ending feels lackluster to me.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Also throughout the story, the main character approaches and interacts with certain groups with at least having some intention to create good relations with them and have them on his side to fight in the war against the blood cult. It's mentioned how dead set he is on fighting against the blood cult, having some control of these other groups so that they can all unite in the end and fight against the blood cult. The thing is that when this war comes, there is pretty much no mention of (most of) the groups he gathered for the war and what role they really played, which makes it feel like these groups he gathered weren't actually that important for the war after all? A lot of the story built up on the fact that there was going to be an intense war, but the lack of details on the war besides what was going on with the main character just makes all that build up fall flat. It would just be nice if it felt like the groups that the main character gathered for the war actually had a purpose in the war?

[collapse]

Spoiler

I wish there was something more about the main character's chronic illness? It was a big reason why the main character needed to master the martial arts of the Blood Demon in his current life, and a big reason why the main character first decided that he needed to become a star instructor (aka to get money so he can get the things he needs to cure his chronic illness). Besides some little parts throughout the story, his chronic illness felt pretty brushed off, although this could just reflect how his motive of taking down the Blood Cult was just way greater than anything relating to his chronic illness. At least at the end, when his chronic illness would have resurfaced again because of his loss of the Blood Demon's martial arts, it was taken care of very quickly and was brushed off again. It's not that big of a deal, I just feel like there could've been more done with it in a way?

[collapse]

Basically what I mean is that it just could've been better.

Some things besides the ending:

I wouldn't say all of the fighting scenes but quite a bit of them were kind of underwhelming to me? In general also, there just feels like a number of unresolved things by the end of the main story? It doesn't affect reading experience that badly, it would just be a lot better if these things were resolved instead.

Anyway I still like the story regardless apart from how it ended, so if you want to read, I just would have fun and not have the highest expectations about the ending.

tldr MC is fun, other characters are fun, story is fun, and the ending is... something but it's okay. <<less

This is a great read. The plot is mostly nonexistent up until chapter 60 or so, and our MC is of course overpowered and ruthless towards his enemies. I normally dislike academy stories, but this one's a really fun read. The translation is excellent too.

One of my favorite music novel and novel in general. There no romance for the main character at all. They relationship between him and his student so nicely made and describe. I absolutely love how the author wrote each interactions. I would highly recommend this book. This slower paced in fighting in the early ch, but definitely not boring.

All readers' preferences are different so I sorta understand why other' have a pretty low review, but personally for me, this a 10/10, even more. I love how their characters and relationships are written and how it's pretty easy to read with no unnecessary deep words and I could easily picture how the scenes are played out in my head. The plot is really good for me, there's a driving point why the MC does what he does and he isn't unnecessarily kind/turns chivalrous like most MCs reborn in the... more>> orthodox side. It's my favorite novel of all murim genre novels I've read!! <<less
